From The Swanage Railway Trust Website: Built in 1893, No.563 was part of the famous T3 class designed by William Adams in 1891. Twenty of the T3 locomotives were built with No. 563 being the only survivor of its class. No.563 is also special because it is the last express passenger tender locomotive designed by the celebrated William Adams. No one has seen an example of this type of locomotive...

The HST farewell rail tour filmed with a drone on the Swanage Railway and in Poole, Dorset. Please note that professional drones do not record sound. This branch line to Swanage should be part of the national railway network with a frequent train service between Bournemouth and Swanage from early in the morning to late in the evening. BR should never have closed the line.

    I remember it like this in the 80s ,with an empty trackbed ! I moved to Bournemouth about 88 !! One of my first outings in the local area was to the Purbecks and Corfe Castle ! I never believed the railway would return when I saw the empty trackbed and the derelict station ! I though the task was too colossal !The Swanage railway were so lucky ! I understand there were plans to build a Corfe Castle by-pass along the old track bed !

    I LOVED the good old 'Valenta era' class 43's. Once those engines were replaced they never sounded as good again. But watching these videos compare them to the 'Shinkanzen' (bullet train in Japan OMG you can barely even SEE those trains come and go they are SOOOO FAST. I wonder if one day the UK will have speeds anything LIKE that? I mean London to Edinburgh will take less than 3 hours!

    Not sure what the strange looking signal at 31:03 is, but it appears to be at danger. I can only assume they look as if someone has removed part of the signal arms ?

    • @RailFlicks
      @RailFlicks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Ha! Ha! Yes I can see why you'd think that, but it's a 2 aspect colour light signal that has not been commissioned yet. The head has been mounted sideways to show it's not in use. The 'arms' are the lens hoods in profile view! 🙂

    • @vicsams4431
      @vicsams4431 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thank you for your explanation. Pointing not yet commissioned signals at 90 degrees to the track, I have witnessed in Austria. However, the correct practice in Blighty is to mount them facing forward and to attach a white X in front. Cheers.

    • @RailFlicks
      @RailFlicks 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes that's true, don't know why they didn't do that. Perhaps the head only went on yesterday and they didn't have a white cross to hand yet? Who knows!🤔

    In August 1972 my dad and me walked down from the road bridge to Scotland Heath to Corfe station at the time the contractors were removing the track. The narrow gauge clay line had finished up by that pint and there were a couple of wagons sitting on Skew Arch Bridge. I went up and pushed them about a bit and dad took a photo of me doing so. I took home a rail key as a souvenir. In 1979 I started volunteering there for the next five years. Still have many friends there from the early years.

    Amazing Video. I’m from Weymouth now78 years old.In the height of Summer the train used to set off from Weymouth station to the quay. And the town almost came to a standstill, Well! Idiots used to park over the edge of the painted markings.So! The train couldn’t get past.The rail guys and sometimes the Police would help,used to have to bounce the cars off of the markings. Seen it so many times. (There is actually on TH-cam, scenes of them doing this) I could never understand the mentality of these drivers. You park behind the lines. I have been parked as the train came by,and the effect of being stopped but the train moving was a very strange experience. I have actually tugged the handbrake because I thought that I was moving, the feeling was awful. And on occasions I thought I was going to be sick.Trust me you have to have been there. Many people I have spoken to since then have said the same thing. That they experienced that strange movement. Up close to a moving train when you are stopped ! Horrible. Many years ago. Happier days than these. That’s for sure! Now I live in Poole and see the train come across the embankment on Poole Harbour,well actually Poole Park. Every day. My flat overlooks the park and the embankment,so it’s part of my life now.

      Happy 78th Don. I am 20 years your junior, but I can remember the Weymouth Quay branch. I did it twice. Once on my first visit, aboard the Channel Islands Boat Train in 1985, the 10.35 off Waterloo. It was a 73 to Bournemouth and a 33 to Weymouth Quay with a rake of Mark 1 loco hauled stock (not 4TC) and my second visit was on a railtour that started in Manchester. Not only do I recall the police walking ahead of the train, but a Ford Cortina driver towing a large caravan. The motorist decided to follow a HGV because everyone gives way to an articulated lorry, and he did not want to reverse his caravan. However, the train did not give way ! The police duly asked the lorry driver to reverse. Next you heard frantic honking by the Cortina driver as the lorry went backwards. I have also done Poole to Hamworthy Goods on a charter train, and Wareham to Swanage on a through train from Waterloo.

    When we were kids in Bournemouth, Swanage and Corfe Castle were our go-to place for days at the seaside or countryside. Bournemouth pier to Swanage on Cousins paddle steamer, or by rail from either Central or West stations. Visited the resurrected line in 2005, 2010 and 2014, and took in all the sites around remembering days gone by. A magnificent effort by all involved over the many decades! Now semi-retired in Picton, South Island, New Zealand.

    34092 only ever had two depot allocations.I remember when she was transferred to our depot at Salisbury. We would stop off on our way to school (St. Thomas's), to see the 08.45 train leave. This train always dropped off some vans that were then pushed to the East End by the station pilot. Imagine our surprise that morning when instead of the usual Drummond Tank, the "push out" was done by 34092 !!!! I've no idea what Gabby Hays, or Mick Farrer may have tried to teach us that day, but I'll never forget City of Wells on the "push out !!" .

    I'd have dumped the air and ran back through the engine compartment... very few people would survive a fall at 50mph. In the event, sadly it sounds like it was un-necessary - from the report: "Although the locomotive was extensively damaged and the leading bogie derailed, the integrity of the driver's cab remained intact." Hate things like this, poor bloke just went to work and stuff like this means he's never clocking off. RIP Driver Brooker

      I was thinking that but you have to run sideways so at 50mph I might not have made it all the way through. Also there may have been a faff about with a key to access the other end if it was locked.

    A hard decision.....stay with it or jump, at that speed I'd have jumped, hopefully as a driver I'll never have to decide but it's something I ofter think about, especially when passenger often block our cab access into the train carriage with suitcases which could end up trapping us in the cab.

These videos from all over UK keep me in touch with progress, and NDR in particular, as one day, long, long ago I visited Shillingstone as 12 year old, and never forgotten that day!

    When I was in the Lifeboys in Winton , Bournemouth, our group met up with other troops from round the region at Shillingstone. We went by train from Bournemouth West. I have, regretfully, I have never been on the rest of the line to Bath. My late mother did part of her hairdressing training at Midsomernorton, just before WW II, and travelled on the line many times from her home town of Ringwood. Now living 18,821 km from that area!

    I'm grateful to you for this as I was miffed to have missed the celebrations. In return and as a fan of the Charlotte Roses of this world, you really can't miss the splendidly mad Dutchman's version of a certain theme tune belonging to a fond remembered adaptation of the books that got us here in the first place. Intrigued, I hope, name that tune in... th-cam.com/video/9oZLs9VG78s/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ndkoO3otfW_FbUtx

    Very well filmed and very informative but i believe you have the year wrong on the two Bailey Gate photographs that say it is 1965,and as the S & D never closed until March 1966 those 2 photo dates are wrong.At a guess i would say 1968/69 for the shot of D6506 on the recovery train,also the state of the p-way is pretty bad.Freight continued up to Blandford until early 1969.I also walked the line from Blandford to Corfe Mullen in 1969 all the track was still in situ.Your film brought back memories.
