Francesca Caccini: Che t'ho fatt'io
#italianopera #classicalmusic #baroque
Francesca Caccini was an Italian composer, singer, lutenist, poet, and music teacher of the early Baroque era. She was also known by the nickname "La Cecchina", originally given to her by the Florentines and probably a diminutive of "Francesca". She was the daughter of Giulio Caccini, and was one of the best-known and most influential female European composers between Hildegard of Bingen in the 12th century and the 19th century. Her stage work, La liberazione di Ruggiero, has been widely considered the first opera by a woman composer.
Painting:
A Roman Betrothal, 1870, by Hector Leroux
English translation of lyrics:
What did I do to you
that you so want me to die
so I'll stop loving you?
Don't you know that I live only by your splendor?
Ah, hard heart, ah, yield to desire;
What did I do to you?
What good will it do you
if I'm burned up
in the bright sun of your pretty eyes?
Ah, turn a merciful gaze on my suffering,
for I'm dying and burning:
ah, if you cause my death
what good will it do you?
An arrogant soul's
vicious cruelty
should not be the fruit of great beauty,
but is a mean reward for fervent love,
for pure faithfulness:
ah, heart of a cruel beast
in an arrogant soul.
If you disdain love,
grudging heart,
At least don't wish for my death.
At least acknowledge that I love you,
and the torment
that I feel for you, ah, ruthless heart,
if you disdain love.

Born in Torremaggiore, a small town near Foggia, in the ancient kingdom of Naples, at an early age he went to Naples where he studied music with the Franco-Flemish composer Jean de Macque, organist of the Santa Casa dell’Annunziata and maestro di cappella to the Spanish viceroy. #baroquemusic #opera #handel Amadigi di Gaula is a "magic" opera in three acts, with music by George Frideric Handel. It was the fifth Italian opera that Handel wrote for an English theatre and the second he wrote for Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington in 1715. #baroquemusic #handel #italianopera The opera is low on recitative, and high on superb arias (the chorus at the end was sung by all of the soloists together). ... Meanwhile, Juno had seen everything. She was merely waiting for an occasion To exact the exemplary punishment. The moment Jove's bastard was born - A boy, Arcas! - her fury exploded. She stared in wild hatred at the new infant. "So,"she screamed at Callisto, the world can see You have perfected your insult- and my shame. "Now see me perfect my revenge On this beauty of yours That so unbalanced my husband" She grabbed the girl by the hair Above her forehead, and jerked her down flat on her face. As Callisto lay there, pleading for mercy With outstretched arms, those arms the god had caressed Suddenly bushed thick black hair, Her hands curved into scoops of long talons- They had become feet. And her mouth That Jupiter had kissed in his rapture Was fanged jaws, like a torn open wound. Then to empty her cries of their appeal The goddess nipped off her speech. Instead of words A shattering snarl burst from her throat, a threat- Callisto was a bear. Yet her mind was unaltered. Her lament Was the roar of a bear- but her grief was human " From Ovid, Metamorphoses, Callisto and Arcas. Translation by Ted Hughes
