They should have just included a remote for that. 60 seconds isn't the problem if it is just displayed on a shelf, but it is definitely a problem when you opt for an acrylic glass case display. I wish they had done a remote with it or at least made it possible if someone wanted to just do that.

Not sure what that yellow box is inside under the Flux Capacitor or why the wire clips on the exterior are purple. Also supposed to have the GoodYear Eagle GT tire lettering. On the plus side, the solid blue on the exterior appears to finally have been done right and nice and solid. Although the plutonium exhaust steam shouldnt be going off the same time as the blue lights.

The Hotwheels Super Elite 1/18 scale model is still the most accurate to me. And you can make all 3 versions from the same model. But it's kinda rare and costs a pretty penny now. The sound effects are perfect and go off exactly the way they're supposed to, from punching in the destination to take off and even changes when in hover mode.

No, the Tomy Enterprise has no timer. It stays on. I leave it on for display and use rechargeable batteries. The timer issue is made worse because there's no reason for it to be so short. 60 seconds. Good grief.

My recollection from a Hasbro rep on a different product (Ghostbusters related) was something to the effect that toys aimed at young children have regulations about timers for use. They could theoretically up the age rating on this one product but, essentially, the problem is that higher age ratings might not hold up in court if someone with a young child made a complaint because SO MUCH of their product is rated 4+ that some courts or regulatory agencies would say that it's irrelevant when they give an individual product a higher age rating because the prevalence of lower age ratings on their product creates some kind of "reasonable expectation" for certain purposes that you don't need to look at the age rating and the lower age rating standards always apply. There are basically two workarounds. One is if they completely didn't put Tomy (or Hasbro or whatever) prominently on the box. But that creates marketing problems because then they have a famous, trusted brand that has to be fine print. I guess maybe they could have gotten away with another brand owned by the company, like just Takara, maybe. But that can also have its own issues, including Universal maybe not wanting to license to a more obscure brand or one that isn't in U.S. markets. (Takara wouldn't have worked here anyway but SOME other Tomy affiliated brand might.) The other workaround -- and this is what Hasbro sometimes does -- is to quietly engineer in some unadvertised way to disable to child features. For example, the circuit board on the Proton Pack made by Hasbro used very simple, no weld connectors and had extra spaces. But they basically have to void your warranty if you get in there AND they generally can't tell you what they did. Hasbro reps are fond of literally winking at the camera and saying vague things like how customizers will enjoy some choices made. But the two things to consider here are that we haven't had anyone take this apart yet to see if there are easter eggs or design choices quietly made for modders AND that Tomy seems very serious about the quality of their warranty and doesn't seem to want to send mixed messages about whether it's okay to void your warranty. Hasbro by contrast is fairly good about standing behind product but they don't have nearly the kind of explicit warranty Tomy does. I believe Tomy will fully replace any unit with defects they caused for 12 months. So if there is a hidden workaround for the timer built in for adult collectors, basically, Tomy would never publicly admit they put it there deliberately.

It is illogical to have a nice side and an ugly side and chose to feature the ugly side. How much engineering would it really take to just feature the side without the holes? You probably don't read comments on 2 year old videos but I was compelled to write one in case you do. I'd done a lot of research on 3rd party grips, the pros, cons, and issues some people had. But it was this video that caused me to pull the trigger on this Meike for my D850. It's exactly as you said, "god, why would you buy the Nikon?!" Particularly hand held which is all I'm interested in. I must say however that I'm reluctant to trust the security of the connection to a tripod, particularly with a heavy lens. If someone regularly needs to mount a grip to a tripod, the Nikon's full inner metal construction would probably hold up better over the long run. The Meike only has a strip of metal in the bottom on the inside that the ¼-20 is attached to. So I won't be using the remote. I have other ways to remotely trigger the shutter. Plus the D850 already has the additional functionality of the remote built into the camera. Anyway, I love this grip. Feel great in the hand and just works all the time.

    • @robertbrody4032

Glad you're happy with it. As for long heavy glass, you're usually better off removing the grip for tripod work (same for OEM) as it only adds weight and reduced stability. Also: Never use the grip tripod socket for straps because it can weaken grip-to-camera connections (same for OEM). Happy shooting.

How did you pair the remote? Does a certain camera setting have to be turned on (i.e. - Bluetooth, WiFi, etc)? Why is there no video on how to do this?

The remote worked right out of the box.

Robert Brody thank you for your reply. What channel is your remote set to? What are your camera settings with regards to Bluetooth, WiFi, and Wireless Remote options?

I finally figured it out. Was able to pair remote initially with the grip off camera. Placed battery in grip and repeatedly hit remote shutter button half way @ 10 times then confirmed remote LED turning green with remote shutter button half way down, and LED on remote turning red when shutter button fully pressed. BTW I set remote’s channel to 00. I Hope this info helps others that might be having issues getting remote to pair with grip.

Do 3rd party grips still grant 9fps after the latest firmware update?

  • @MikeAustin2012

Great review and good advice. I got a 3rd party grip for my D90, a Mekie for my D7100 and the Meike for my D850, all " still " work great to this day. The added value for me is the wireless RF remote. Using RF or radio frequency gives long range and fewer errors. Actually, no errors for me. It even works with a D18 battery for long life and the 9fps mode. I have never paid the fools price for the oem grip. I have a family, i was lucky to get my cameras. I started with Pentax in the late 1970s and 35mm film. If i had it to do again, I'd stick with Pentax. They even put the anti-shake in camera, NOT in each lens so you pay again and again. Shame on u Nikon!

@@youknowwho9247 YES! My Meike grip DOES support the 9fps function. You remove the battery tray and insert the ENEL-18 battery and attach a $5 to $10 plug (BL-5) on the end AND install the internal battery. The Nikon kit cost about $1000 but I spent aprox, Grip-$99, enel18= $49 Plug to hold in the enel-18 $5 charger for the enel18 $69 total aprox $222 AND I get extra features like 200 to 300 ft RF remote NOT IR remote like MOST products like the 850 itself! I would do it again AND again. REMEMBER ! ! ! the D850 is heavy, adding this or any grip adds to that, the ENEL-18 adds even MORE weight that is. Still, worth it! to me anyway.

@@MikeAustin2012 I know. I have the same grip. My question was whether it still works with 9 fps after updating the camera to the newest 1.20 firmware.

Hi there good video, I bought the grip on the advice received on this video and am totally happy. However I cannot make the remote control work? Is there a setting I need to change on the 850 to make the wireless remote work ? Help would be much appreciated and thanks in advance.

Very helpful...I went for the Meike MKD850+ Duracell DRENL18 battery + BLC5 + Third party charger = 140 GBP Nikon EN EL18 battery = 175 GBP (forget the grip and charger.) And all for 9fps...
