I thought it was time to rebuild my 20 year old HDJ79 Landcruiser, the plan is to tidy it up plus do some modifications to bring it into the modern age. My trade background is heavy duty mechanic, although I haven't been on the tools for a while. Posting videos to keep the motivation going and share some tech tips on what I am doing along the way.

8HP70 Conversion Parts Explained - The Cab And Tub Are Gone
This time we take a look at the components used to make the ZF 8HP70 transmission conversion work on the 1HDFTE engine and take a look at the inside of the transmission's brains. Also I show the cab and tub body coming off the chassis...not a lot left to the vehicles now, we are down to just the chassis and drivetrain components.

79 Series Teardown Phase 1

Phase 1 teardown of the HDJ79, removing front panels, doors and interior and wiring harnesses. Next steps are the cab and tub tray removal, then into the 8HP70 auto mock-up and installation preparation. I have in-principal approval from DoT WA for most of the mods, with the 35" tyres and extended shackles on the rear springs not being allowed. I'm allowed to run 2" taller tyres than the factory...
Midlife Introduction -70 Series HDJ79 Landcruiser
มุมมอง 1.2K2 หลายเดือนก่อน
G'day folks, intro video on the midlife rebuild of a 79 series single cab, we will be doing an 8HP70 transmission conversion and some power upgrades to the mighty 1HD-FTE engine. It'll be a decent size project, with the cab being removed to complete the fitment of the ZF 8HP70, all the mechanical work will be done in a home garage without a vehicle hoist.
Great video mate, love the details and content. It's probably a bit late, but now is a good time to drill the A pillar and doors for future electric windows, central locking, and speaker loom. I used factory electric window looms from Gxl and drilled the door and pillar in the oem location and used oem loom with grommets into one of my early 79 series. Even if you don't do electric now you can have the holes blocked with grommets.
Did the 75 become the 79 in 2000 when they changed the 1HZ to the HD?
The 75 did stop and the 79 took its place in Aug 99. The 1hz was in the 75 and continues today in the variants of the 79 series over the years. The 1hd fte was available in the 79 and sold alongside the 1hz 79 and also along side the fzj79.
@79series I always thought the 79 was the newer shape with integrated front indicators, but then realised it was the engine change that was the change, not the body shape. I have a 99 75 series obviously with the 1HZ. Ironically these can still be special ordered from Toyota Gibraltar Stockholdings for NGOs and militaries.
hey mate nice ute. What mirrors are those?
Hey mate, I got them from Panel House from memory, they are not great quality. An after market reproduction. I’m going to switch to the latest model Troopy mirrors.
Ayy my fav gen 79 series. I also just finished my ZF8 swap into my 5 speed auto 100 series. Now it's always on tap power wise. Can't wait to see yours come into fruition
Done this conversion already, if you have questions mate
Thanks mate, I’ll no doubt take you up on the offer at some point, no kits for FTE at the moment so I’m winging it a bit 👍🏼
@ should be mate, I used a kit
Coming along nicely, looking forward to next video 👍👍
Nice work 🤘
Good stuff. Would have been nice to spend a lot more time on the tear down rather than having it fast motion.
I’ll keep that in mind, cheers for the feedback 👍🏼
