Ep. 21: Taxidermy Competitions, Competing Mindset, & the Value of Friendships, w/ Wes Mote & Alumni
Our first group podcast!
We had the privilege to be surrounded by many amazing taxidermists at Wes Mote's Alumni Group class in Texas. Wes Mote is World Champion Taxidermist in Whitetail. He is also a great teacher and puts on group classes a few times a year. Wes put on this class for his past students, to teach some of new and exclusive molding and casting techniques.
We wanted to be able to share a little bit of the experience and also get into the minds of some of these great taxidermists. Not only do we talk competitions, and the competing mindset, we talk about tips, tricks, answer some questions from Taxidermy Q&A, and much more!
It's an episode you won't want to skip!
Thank you so much for watching!! -Heather and Ashley
(PS. being our first group podcast, we had to overcome some challenges with AV. Despite some of the sound inconsistencies, please enjoy the whole episode, I promise you don't want to skip this one!)

Episode 18: Customer Stories
มุมมอง 2155 หลายเดือนก่อน
Taxidermists are typically business owners as well, or they work for a larger taxidermy business. Either way, we are no strangers to the wild things that can happen during customer interactions. Taxidermy-customer interactions can get a little more interesting than what might happen in a more "normal" job. Listen to some stories that our listeners sent in and hear what we might do that in those...

What about distemper ? I dont have a full coon, nor am i skinning one for taxidermy, however i found a intact paw im thinking of either drying out with borax/salt solution or keeping in a wet specimen jar.. im not sure what to do yet, im new to the hobby, been interested a long time in bones, taxidermy, oddities tho! Im just worried about rabies/distemper and what not with the racoon. I also found a racoon spine (its just bone) (the paw is intact, has skin, fur, paw pads, nails etc) fully intact !
These are absolutely beautiful! I just felt bad for the baby cougars
I loved it I learn a lot about tanning also understand it more good job
Nice
Thank you ladies for being a part of this. Ashley as a student and Heather as her partner in crime. Yall are doing great things for the industry!
Thank you for making this episode possible!! You’re truly a gift to the industry! 😄
Most young taxidermist nowdays don't realize how good they got it with all these world instructors and products out there.
This is true, this is the best time in history to want to learn and be apart of this trade. That being said, we owe everything to the pioneers who have shared their knowledge over the past few decades to advance us all!
Wes is the best instructor I've ever met hands down. It's all about getting educated and educating the future taxidermists!
Thank you, I really appreciate that!
Better together #soLegit 🤙🏼
Good episode
@@KennethCarnahan thank you! We knew Evan would make a good episode!
This podcast applies to a lot more people than taxidermists. You don't want your retirement party to be six pall bearers.
Ok...I need a one of those shirts
@@christhompson2709 we are working on it!
GO BIG RED
This was a good episode! You guys should think about doing more of these. Like have a couple board members or participants on to discuss the recent show. Ofcourse you can't do every show but some of the bigger shows would be cool to hear about!
@@woolybugger9429 this has been a thought we have had. Just have to get the logistics figured out!
One of my favorite episodes! Loved the info on color and composition.
There is no symmetry in nature
Alot easier nowdays than the 80,s
Absolutely!!
Good show!
Sika and Red deer are stags and hinds
Thanks for the info! Not terminology we are used to here in the US 😂
For a 50-year-old whitetail mount, can they be re done with a new skin? or is that basically a start over since it's glued on the form? This one has spilt ears can the ears be fixed?
I wanna say that in an interview it is real and an antique ans the star wanted it but the production company wouldnt let them buy it so its in a storage somewhere
What a shame!!
My question is would any of you ladies ever eat tiger meat.?
I feel like this is a trick question🤔…?
What's your answer
Love the trivia episodes!
Same! It’s always a good time 😂
Mn state bird is a look
Oh really?! They are some really cool birds!
Imagine if the vegan teacher came here😊
Oh gosh…. I don’t think that would go over well 😳
I guessed a loon too!!! 😂
Nice!!
I wish y’all would do a podcast on submersible tanning. I’m very interested in trying it.
We plan on doing a more in depth episode with Paul at some point! But I’m sure you could find a lot of info on the PRO1 website too!
Great episode!
Thanks! We thought he was a great interview!
Very interesting, I'd love to see a diorama museum one day. Good interview
Captive raised lions are not in cages like you think. They are free-ranging on thousands of acres.
We weren’t sure what exactly to picture when you hear captive bred lions. Thanks for the info!
Loved this episode ladies. Well done!
It’s one of our favorites too!! Thank you!
Keep it up, keep growing
We’re trying! Thank you for the support!🥹🥹
Do you have to clean and dry the wood out before using?
Nope! It’s already very dry and there’s nothing to be cleaned off.
Nice work ladies! Keep it up!
Thanks Chuck!!
I am guessing an Idian could take an eagle to Canadan taxidermist?
Possibly🤷🏼♀️ the lines were very fuzzy on what you could do as far as native Americans went 🤔
I read that bald eagles are poached for their parts to sell to Native Americans sometimes. It is illegal to knowingly purchase animal products that have been illegally taken.
I’m sure it does happen sometimes🤷🏼♀️
Every time I go on a vacation plus many fishing trips, I bring back at least one peice of drift wood.
It’s hard to not pick up a cool piece of wood!
So when I was in Colorado hunting elk I was told I couldn't take any sage brush wood....is that true
We aren’t sure about sage wood. We just knew we were legal to get this wood! Lol
Yeah, it's Slug Bug here in the Midwest!!!😂
😂😂 that’s so weird to me! -Heather
I'm a taxidermist in wv......I call to ask some questions about his chemicals sometimes and the man will take time to explain everything I need to know....very knowledgeable man...pro 1 is top notch
Great to hear! He sure puts his all into it!
Love the show!
Thanks!!!
I like this concept of recapping show experiences. Great episode!
Thanks! We weren’t really sure how it would go but we thought it turned out great!
Great content
Thank you!😊
Here I am in Maryland
Lots of talented taxidermists, artists, and wood carvers in Pennsylvania. The coyote catching the gobbler was great, but all of them were.
Definitely a lot of very nice work there!
What a bunch of great artists!
Nice.....taxadermy looks like a big industry these days
It seems to be growing!
Just for future reference, you should never tourniquet a venomous snake bite, but instead remove any rings or watches/ constricting things😁
Oh wow! Well I’m glad I didn’t actually have any venom in my system then 😂😂
You missed Brucellosis 😲 🤓
There will be different ones featured on each of these episodes! There are too many to put them all into one, we will mark that one down!
Podcast have been great. I play and listen while I am at my desk at work.
Awesome, great to hear!!
Lyme disease and tick precautions would be solid
They will definitely be on one of the next ones! We will put a major one in with less known ones in each episode!
I was one of the last group of taxidermists that had to take the exam..I use to be a member of the taxidermy association in pa until they started that being taxidermy association approved (certified) bs..The steps they set up to become certified were bs.
Hi Kevin! I’m from central pa. Sorry you felt that way! That program isn’t required to be a member, so maybe come check out the show again some year!
Heather what part of Pa are you from ?? I'm a taxidermist in Western Pa.
