I find a custom built Sci Fi looking car from the fifties with a crazy backstory that I can't confirm. In part 1 we inspect and try to determine who made this thing and why? Stay tuned @Squarepeg Fab to see where this goes.

This video was SUPPOSED to be a build video for a silly project that I named "Tadpole", But the reaction I got when when I rolled up at a Cars & Coffee was overwhelming that it was "Baby Shark". So I fast-forwarded almost all of the build sequence and focused on the reaction I got. Hope you like it. Music by: th-cam.com/users/lugnkaraoke Featuring the singing of Kylee C. @squarepegfab-tb5cm

    the carb is 55 or 56. 57 they introduced the Holley with the totally modern size bolt pattern. 56 and older had a 4 bolt pattern, but it's a lot smaller. speaking of carbs, I'm surprised it not running multiple carbs. The manifolds have casting numbers....everything Ford.. has a casting number. it's cool to see them reversed foward for steering clearance. they're off a car. truck manifolds go foward, up and over and collect into 1 on the drinker side. they look to be off a 272 or 292. if I remember correctly the 312 has larger manifolds or larger outlet flange. big-big truck manifolds would be the rams horns, center dump. heads have casting numbers under the covers. block casting number is above the starter looking up. ONLY positive way to ID a 312 is measure the actual stroke or look at the flywheel flange at the back of the crank. if I remember correctly the 312 has a single large dot. There's charts online to ID the y-block crank markings. any info you need on the engine topic see: y blocks forever john mummert racing 1957 Ford dot com all the info I gave is from memory from those 3 sites. they're treasure troves of research info. The starter has numbers The generator has numbers the distributor has numbers that rear axle IS a "Columbia butt" 😁old hot rod slang daddy-o! based on the era of the build I'd guess the steering box is F1 and the front axle/suspension/steering could all be 1940-1947ish Ford car and or truck..... used for the wheel bolt pattern to match the Columbia and "juice" brakes. the front axle could be positively identified (if its a Ford) by it's shape, spring perch width, and general shape. H.A.M.B. and a bunch of other sites have charts for this stuff. if it has wishbones, those can be identified by measurements and shape also. all this info I've found while researching Model A builds. all this stuff is what they had to work with. Ford parts were generally the stuff to use so I'd start there. front sump pan is for a car. rear sump pan is for a truck. water pumps are different between car and truck. I think the car is shallow and truck is taller. only thing I dislike about that car is the steering wheel. the car deserves something era correct like a 40 Ford, 50-58ish Ford, Lincoln, or Mercury fancy wheel, or a plane 3 spoke racer wheel. fuel caps are 68 Charger. old boat or Jaguar caps would be "more better" isn't this fun

    It's like someone got a glimpse of a 50s Corvette and went to work building one from memory using what they had. The steering wheel is from an old Ford with the top cut out. Doubt it ever did any organized racing as being a topless car would have a roll bar hoop for the driver at a minimum.

    What an awesome car. I suspect its a very early 50's sports car effort, going by the Nash style low wheel openings, and the upright fender ends. From what i've read, there was several "home built" sports cars that were built to go head to head with Ferrari and the English cars. Most of them seemed to run Ford flatheads, with Ford axles because the hot rod world had those parts perfected. That's a serious effort body, it's a shame that someone butchered it like that. I'm guessing it was probably a 48-ish flathead and 3 speed, judging by the Columbia rearend. That was a popular setup in the 40's though 50's on street cars. I'm betting the y-block was added later, probably when the frontend was cut off. Maybe the radiator was by a recent owner trying to get it drivable. Plans to fully restore it?

  • @longroth4882
    @longroth4882 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    With the panned undercarriage, and the additional oil capacity, I'd say some form of racing. Someone just building a hot rod wouldn't really incorporate all that, nor would that be in a movie car, they are always just "skin deep". But why headlights? Wouldn't need or want them for salt flat racing. Perhaps it was constructed for some form of road rally or endurance racing? The track they run the 24 hours of Daytona dates back to the 1950's (6 hour races until I think the mid 60's), but not sure if they allowed home built, or if cars had to be based on production models. But perhaps a purpose for it. I love a mystery, especially auto related. I really want to follow this now and see what you come up with.
