Coach painting cars and vans
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 26 เม.ย. 2011
Here is the old art of coach painting, I’ve used similar techniques as the craftsman did at the turn of the century although the paint has changed somewhat!
Anyone can do this, the main thing to do is take it easy and slow to get perfect results.

How to coach paint car at home with a brush 👨🎨
I’ve hand painted 2 vans, 1 Land Rover and an 8 wheeled tipper cab in the past, using a paint called speedcoat 2, all turned out very well, I even used a mini roller and the finish was still excellent.
You’ve obviously had more experience than most people, brilliant well done.
It was over 30 years ago 🥴 I used to spray paint cars prior to that but found coach painting to give a really good finish 👍
so do the brush strokes stay? do you have to sand down the brush strokes when paint is dry?
No and no , it’s all in the technique that’s all explained in the series of videos
Thanks for these videos, I’ve got a mini and it’s good to know it’s possible to brush the paint on rather than pay for expensive spray job!
Glad you liked the videos, anyone can achieve excellent results with the right technique. In the videos I show how to do it simply, tricks and techniques Thanks
Your volume level is really low😊
Yes I’m really sorry about that, I didn’t realise till after I stopped recording. My apologies
Very impressive are you using cellulose paint
No Billy it’s boat enamel paint, made by craftmaster in the uk But any paint can be used for this method as long as it’s not rapid drying Like cellulose paint as you mentioned. Cellulose paint is only suitable for spraying. My paint job only cost £350 all in . Thanks for your compliment and for watching. Regards Steve
Excellent Can"t find the clear coat, do you have a link or where did you buy it? Thank you
Sorry I don’t have link, but if you Google it you should find it or contact H.M. Guest in Manchester uk
@@2194steveThank you Steve!
What materials are those briquettes made off?
If you take a look at my other videos I show how to make them for virtually nothing.
What paint did you use and where did you get it from. Could you put some links as well as the clear coat 👍
It’s called coach enamel, from Craftmaster made by H m Guest in Manchester uk The clear coat is called mona Bernice it’s for canal boats
what type of paint are you using
It’s coach enamel paint, made by craftmaster in the uk
2 doubts to reply on : 1. I park my car daily under tree and due to less time I am able to wash my car once in a week or in 2 week only , and during winter time flower and fruit kind of thing fall from that tree and make brown spots, not easily removable, on my peal white car paint. Also, scorching sun light comes during day time after 12pm and upto 4pm. Will seal and shine will be able to withstand scorching sun heat and protect car from those marks coming ? 2. Can we apppy Seal n shine on windshield ? How is night driving experience after that ?
Sorry I have no idea, I can only comment on my own experiences and what I have found on my own car.
@@2194steve : difference in between seal n shine & graphene flex ? In terms of shine
@@satyam4961 i would say seal and shine is the better one, personally that is I’m not an expert by any means. But seems to hold a very good shine. Hope this helps in some way. Regards Steve
Ps I haven’t used my car in the rain, so I can’t say if the windshield will smear or not, but that’s a good point.
Extraordinary paint job with a classic-look results. Could you recommend to apply this way of painting to an old vespa? It is in good shape, no rusts. It is painted in dark-green colour, and I would like to change it to a white or ivory color. Thanks
A few of my subscribers have painted their motorbikes and scooters this way,and have said how good they look. And would only cost about £50 to buy the paint. Cheers
Good work.
Thank you Regards Steve
Nice paint job. The sound is very low on your channel. Thanks see you on the next video.
Sorry about the sound, I thinks only one video that’s bad sounding. Thanks for watching please share and hopefully subscribe. Regards Steve
Brilliant, Thank You very much love this Tutorial 😊

Can this product be wet sanded to polish up?
No sorry this product can’t be buffed, it’s very shiny out of the tin and no need to cut and buff.
Is it your standard enamel paint?
Yes James it’s made by craftmaster
I'm going to try this product on one of my projects. I'm used to spraying but also learned how to brush paint to a glass finish as a teen. If it can take flatting and polishing it's worth trying out. I think I'll do a test piece first though. I have had reactions before using different products together. And i don't know enough about many of them, as to which are compatible.
Craftmaster paint cannot but cut and buffed, other paints can research before you buy if I were you.
were you happy with the finish,?
Yes I was Stephen , it looked sprayed! In fact I took it to the garage who quoted £4000-£8000 to see what they thought. When I showed them my brush from my back pocket, and told them I used this they fell on the floor, and it only cost me £350 result! Anyone can do this and save a fortune.
Was holding my breath waiting for the fumes there!
Not to worry Thomas, it was outside I painted the car.
I find you need to screen new paint because there’s junk in it. Imagine how good it would be with $20 dollar brush.
As long as you use a decent brush the results will be very good, I used a Hamilton brush and a top of the range Harris brush. As for the paint there was no bits in it! The bits were from the wind being outside painting underneath a carport. Thank you for your comment.
@@2194steve sorry it just looked skippy compared to the now discontinued brushes I used in my career. Stuff in the breeze? One time we oil painted a house sidewall and thousands of lady bugs stuck themselves in it. Nice mini? primrose? My first car was brushed by my Dad. With right touch metal can be brushed.
First, great job, and thank you for sharing. I'm a senior, and have been painting cars with a brush for over 50 years now. My grade 7 teacher painted his car with a brush, and I learned by helping. Then by practicing, and this summer I painted my car at the curb. Passerbys would ask, "What are you doing?" And I told them I was painting my car. (Brush in hand) Mostly they're shocked, "You can't paint a car with a brush!" A few weeks later, one of the neighbours asked me to look at their car. "Can you paint this one?" When done properly, it looks great, and stands up better over time.
Thank you Mel, Yes most people think you’ve lost the plot, when they see what you’re doing until the see the finished car. And a WOW comes from their mouth! It’s a great feeling of accomplishment especially when it actually looks sprayed. Let’s keep this old tradition of coach painting going. Regards Steve
As a old expainter I remember talk about the old 20/30s hand painted cars, magic looked like a sprayed job if not better. Well done looks fantastic many thanks
Thank you for your kind words, glad you liked the finished results. Regards Steve
Nice. Brushing on paint doesn't get the YT love that even cheap spray methods do here in the States. Don't get me wrong there are some fantastic YT channels that teach spray painting but not much for ye olde brush method. Rustoleum Turbo cans are great but not cheap either.
Thank you for watching, hope you enjoyed the videos. Regards Steve
That clear coat is easier use than varnish and polyurethaning my mid-century cabinet!
Yes it’s very easy.
It was like watching paint dry.
Brilliant, Thank you
Excellent. Damn all the desktop experts!
Thank you Dan, you always get the (Experts) that can’t knock a nail straight I take it with a pinch of salt. Thanks again Regards Steve

Well done.

Why not open the door to allow for a full edge with no clear getting on the door?
I see your point, but I wanted to show on the camera having little room to open the door under the carport. Regards Steve
Jesus Christ. Spend 10 minutes learning how to operate and place a camera. Holy phuk
Sorry I don’t understand the relevance?
@@2194steve I’m not surprised. Lol
I hate to be the spoil sport around here, but you can still see the brush marks in the finished and cured panels he showed at the end. You get a very nice looking and decent finish with a brush, but not the mirror-like finish you get with spray paint.
Sorry to say, but you’re wrong about the brush marks in the video, I have shown the car to the company that quoted me £4000-£8000 for a re spray, and they couldn’t believe I did it with a brush! I’ve been to car shows and everyone said it’s sprayed and don’t believe me when told it’s by brush. As for the mirror finish, you can brush your hair from 3 feet away just like a mirror. But thank you for your comment.
@@2194steve I must have seen some artifacts then, it was on top of the fender just before the camera went all over the place, my bad...
My jaw dropped when he picked the dust out with his fingers...... I love this! .... makes so much sense for some cars like my 914 that has rattle-can painted flares. This is the Ultimate DIY
Thank you Robert, glad you liked the videos And it’s easy to do anyone can do it, if you follow the simple rules i address in the videos. All techniques and tips on how to achieve a top class paint job.
I'm impressed! I'm looking at a 23-year-old, white Mercedes and thinking about using this product. At the present, she looks great from 20 feet away. Using this product, we might be able to get much closer to her before gagging. LOL.
If you follow the information and techniques in the videos, there a quite a few showing tips and various techniques to achieve a stunning finish, that’s very hard to tell it’s not sprayed. If you do paint it, remember take your time and the most important thing is preparation don’t cut corners. Regards Steve
Damn that looks good but how you going to enjoy it if you're in the hospital under respirator From the fumes that s*** puts out
Thank you I did all the work outside under a carport .
That looks fantastic ! Great job 🎉
Thank you.
Good, but you skipped the last steps so that the finish is identical to a sprayed finish: cutting and polishing. You use 600-800-1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper, and then a final polishing with a polishing compound. You can slather a clear coat on any old way, but it’s the cutting and polishing that creates the smooth, mirror-like final finish.
No last steps, that’s the finish straight out of the tin! You can’t cut and buff this paint it will burn, it’s all about preparation application and technique.
You said that you'd enamelled it but will it work on the original cellulose paint? It goes on easy, but will it come off as easily if it ever needs repainting? You didn't really give us enough information about the product.
There is Tony, all the information and techniques are in the other videos
These small spunge rollers work just as well, done it before
I personally found the brush better for me! I have more control over the paint, but if it works for you that’s all that matters.
Interesting. Can it be wet sanded and polished?
This particular paint can’t be wet sanded or polished, this finish is straight out of the tin! Other paints you can polish.
What colour code is the mini?
I can’t remember to be honest, but it’s old English white, and Black from Craftmaster paints
@@2194steve thanks Steve. Nice work
all the old cars back in the day were hand painted with coach paint. got a feeling i still have a tin somewhere....
Yes you’re correct Kenneth, Rolls Royce, Bugatti, to name a couple.
Friend of mine sprayed his old motor outside with hammerite back in the 70's ( diluted with hammerite thinners ) The finnish was smooth ( because of the dilution ) and it dried in no time at all ! Tidy job ☺
🥴
The sound is so bad
Yeah sorry about that, but all the other videos are good sounds.
When i learnt to brush paint (Gloss front doors say) watched an old documentary, two old guys painting a huge Victorian front door and they never feathered like you did but the more brush strokes back 'n' forth in the same spot produced a glass like finish and they explained this technique as they went along. Yes it's a lot to do with the prep work but it's also in the finish. Great job you did here and i remember my neighbours in the 70/80's painting their Cortina MKIII by hand and doing a great job of it. 👍👍
Thank you
It’s not much about the technique used, the number one problem still persists: dealing with dust and insects.
All you have to do is cover the car like a make shift tent, no problem
@@2194steve I will definitively try it. I already painted several vehicles this way but it was with matt colors only. The results were acceptable. I never tried it with gloss point nor varnish though. Thank you so much for the answer.👍
Well this is great I`m definately going to try this on my van and probably save a fortune on the paintwork it requires. Thank you , very informative.
Thank you Richard glad you enjoyed it.
How long does it take to cure? Also can this be used over existing two pac clearcoat?
To fully harden about 3 weeks, depending on temperature and humidity. Yes it can be used on 2 pack just sand down to get a good key.
Great job! That stuff may be good for faded plastic headlights!
That’s a good idea Pete.
WOW ......Many Thanks for your upload 🙂 . My old mate did it to a VW Combi with a light roller ...... but you are first on youtube to demonstrate it !!!! . I knew it was possible ........ and i look forward to doing my old Swedish car ........ as the art is also the "cutting back" and polishing .......(not forgetting the "prep work") . Many Thanks
Mine was no cutting back or polishing, it’s just technique and paint out of the tin, glad you liked the videos.
