Tek PS280 Lab Power Supply Repair
มุมมอง 1.4K7 ปีที่แล้ว
I bought this bench power supply on Ebay and it arrived non-functioning. The Ebay seller sold it as used, which means that it should have been in working order. Something happened during shipping and the potentiometer was broken. The Master voltage reading was at 45 volts and would not change when the potentiometer was rotated. I bought a TEK PS280 bench power supply online, and it arrived brok...
C# Tutorial - Blackout or Turn Off Second Monitor
มุมมอง 1.9K7 ปีที่แล้ว
This is a beginners tutorial for writing C# application to blackout a second monitor. This is handy while watching videos on main monitor. This tutorial is for beginners. I take my time to explain what the code is doing. This is a beginners app, but could be useful for other things. This .NET application allows me to turn off or on my 2nd monitor as needed with a simple UI.
I have 4 of them, and sure enough they've all lost their transformers over the years. My oldest one is nearly 20 years and old and still klcking, I've got another one down currently for another transformer replacement! 😁
Thanks for video but would be nice to know what part number for replacement was
Hi CL, thanks for the comment. These were purchased on Amazon in 2017 from a random seller that is no longer available. The seller sold only in packages of 10, so I bought 10 of them. The closest thing to a part number is 10k linear potentiometer with 15 mm shaft, part number WH148. They were relatively inexpensive because they are very common potentiometers. Seems like you are in Australia (maybe), which is very expensive shipping, otherwise I would send one to you for free, as I bought 10 and have not had an occasion to use any others. You should be able to find a seller using the description/ PN above.
Thanks for the update, I am in Tennessee. What part of country are you in? I am working on a ps280 with slave going to full output if you turn current pot and voltage pot to any setting.
I found the problem. The 1K potentiometer on the slave channel was snapped. Apparently this is a common problem.
The pots are delicate, it seems, and the slightest blow will break them. Thanks for the comment.
4:26 Christ Jesus that scared the living shit outta me. It sounds like a dog barking, but with headphones on, trying to hear the rather quiet narration, it sounds like somebody being viciously murdered--I nearly soiled myself. Great video otherwise. Working on my 280 as well. Cheers. W0XO
Haha, so sorry about the dogs, they get excited and bark like the world is ending if they hear something outside. Good luck with your 280, they are pretty good power supplies. Very much worth saving. Thanks for the reply.
i have two of these monitors, and i can tell you it now seems like it may be typical for those bottom two capacitors to bulge up. also hot spots seem to be prevalent on these boards, which now makes me think that the design flaw, is that the monitor should probably have a fan included in its design, probably aimed at the transformer. Inverter Transformer SPI 8TC00332 is the component name for it.
The clicking noise is very irritating FYI.
It's just not fair, if they were doing paid updates, it would be OK, but taking back what was donated is disgusting
I'm interested to know how you create your menu bars. help would be appreciated very much.
any suggestions for additional videos on creating P&ID's in draftsight?
2D is just fine for me as a woodworker most of the time. It makes it convenient and accurate to make cut plans for boards and sheet goods. I'll be looking into freeware CAD software and Dassault will never see a penny from me. I think LibreCAD and nanoCAD are the first 2 on my list. Thanks for the information, and I agree it's a shame that all these companies are moving to subscriptions over purchase.
After MANY clks, I still am unable to get DRWNG BOUNDRY. I WOUD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS. Thanks!
After MANY clks, I still am unable to get DRWNG BOUNDRY. I WOUD APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS. Thanks!
Click format at top of screen, click drawing boundary near bottom of menu list. Now in command line area at bottom of screen you can enter coordinates. Press enter to select first corner...which should default to 0,0. I usually use the size and orientation of my paper, so for opposite side I enter 11,8.5...(I’m using inches...if you use millimeters just change accordingly) To see drawing boundary turn on grid, type zoom in command line and then type b for bounds. You can verify by drawing a rectangle around the grid and dimension it... hope that helps.
Muchas Gracias, excelente vídeo 10/10. Thank you very much, very helpful video señor 10/10.
My monitor is same model and working... It just takes a long time to come on. Blinking blue light by power button soon as I hit the power button. After about 10-15 min it finally comes on (or if PC is not on, light turns yellow meaning it's ready) Haven't opened it up yet... but I'm guessing it's a bad cap somewhere... did yours do this?
Hi, thanks for the comment. No, my monitor would turn on for a couple of seconds and turn completely dark and only flash on again if cable disconnected. I did find half of the inverter transformer bad and that explains the partial turning on. I have not had time to finish the video, but should get back to it soon. From your description, sounds like a power supply/capacitor problem for your monitor.
I have a different monitor with a similar FSP power supply, and after 12 years ALL the caps on the secondary went bad, even the ones that weren't domed, from gaining enough leakage to drain it in seconds and at least a 40% capacity loss, to complete capacitance loss. The slow decay of the capacitors just past the diodes has caused the capacitors further down the line to dome and pop. The section of the power supply gets quite hot from the diodes, and capacitors appear to get slowly cooked. I think i fixed the power supply but possibly ruined something else by now after assembling and disassembling it a bit too many times, it whitescreens now, meaning the panel isn't doing anything, but the processor board appears to be running. EDIT: I. Am. A. Stupid. Little. Kitten. The panel connector partially slid out - tape gave up. Phew, it's running now! Happy that no latch-up damage occured!
Siana Gearz Thanks for the comment. Ha, we all do things like that, glad it was that easy.
tq soo much, very clear

Thanks Crocellian!
It's interesting that, if I recall correctly, it was those same two capacitors which seemed to have gone on my board as well. I was going to ask whether that might be indicative of some sort of design flaw, but given how long my monitor lasted, I don't think that's necessarily a fair question to ask. Looking forward to part two, either way!
Thanks for the comment. Oddly enough, those 2 bulging caps are filters for power for the digital board that plugs into the power board. The problem to begin with was that the digital was coming through fine, however, the backlight wasn't lighting (or lighting for 2 seconds). So, even with the bulging caps, the digital board was still working. The backlight problem was twofold: 1. All of the other caps had hotspots around them, therefore they were probably dried up and less effective or bad. They were all replaced. If replacing caps on a power board, always replace them all, even if they are not bulging. This could be why the transformer got hot and burned out. 2. The secondary of one of the transformers that powers the lights was open and this type of lighting needs a balanced power supply so only half of the lights were lighting only briefly, due to the imbalance, and then would shut off.
If you like this type of video, let me know in the comments. Stay tuned for Part 2 as soon as I receive my transformer. Thanks for watching! As always, keep doing everyday things!
This power supply was actually manufactured by GW Instek in Taiwan for Tek and the service data seems to have never been made public. However, the data for the Instek, Tenma and other brand supplies is out there, the main difference being that different labeled models have meters instead of LED's or have slightly different max. current or voltage ratings. Stan Griffiths, ex-Tek, told me that these had perennial issues with the pots because people would be carrying them and bang them into a door frame and break the pot. Broken pots are the # 1 issue with these! Geoff, WB6NVH, Monterey CA
Thanks WB6NVH. I found the pdf for the manuals online for the GW-Instek GPC-3020D from k04bb.com and oddly enough, the pdf title says it is for the Tek PS280 and the Tek PS283. The service manual had revised schematic in August 1991 and, after tracing a bit on the control board was identical to mine except that I had an additional U505 which did not show on the manual.
I have an intermediate level projection on this video, if you have any comments or suggestions, please leave a comment here. Thanks for watching! Keep doing everyday things!
