    Had 2 full size Reds with Cine lenses, Ronin 2, etc. Never again, Sony FX3s now with G Master lenses. No more focus pullers, huge gimbal rigs, or having to do shade calibrations. The only problem is now that cameras are so great and cheap, too many people are in the business dragging all of the budgets down.

    • @dreschervisuals
      @dreschervisuals หลายเดือนก่อน

      Haha yeah we learned during the testing that even with hardware acceleration, Premiere still uses more of the CPU than the GPU for exporting. So in the case we realized is probably better to invest in a more powerful CPU than a GPU

    • @whoisgtsdk
      @whoisgtsdk หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@dreschervisuals That makes sense. I do mostly shorter form videos so render time isn't too much of a concern for me. I'm all AMD and Vegas Pro for editing, and I did throw down on a fairly beefy CPU but I will say that having a nice GPU is great to be able to do the full resolution preview smoothly. There are definitely times where complicated or busy effects (static generation jumps to mind) just kills the preview framerate to basically 0 while they're going and I just have to take it on faith that it'll look good in the render. Honestly the best feature of the strong multi-core CPU is that I can still watch youtube and do other things while projects are rendering. 😄

    • @dreschervisuals
      @dreschervisuals หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@whoisgtsdkyeah it can definitely depend on each individual’s work. Some people will benefit more from a more powerful cpu and some from a gpu. KOMODO is NOT INDICTAVE of the RED LOOK - Komodo LOOKS NOTHING like any other RED and NOT in a good way.... so if your first EXPERENCE is KOMODO your perception of Red footage IS WAY WAY WAY wrong. Excellent vid! Subbed 😊 As a very old editor (who shoots a bit nowadays) who has for decades looked at and grumbled about footage other people have shot, I have come to love the vision from the Red Komodo. I think it comes down to the global shutter. And I believe the global shutter look is just one of those imaging things that goes to work on the viewer’s perception subconsciously as pleasing because that is how human vision works as well. The vision you shot of the runner is a lovely example. From people I have spoken with who have a komodo, the global shutter particularly helps with anamorphics and movement. I have a Lumix S5iiX (don’t laugh) which has better anamorphic support than any other mirrorless body, and a lot of big cameras. BUT the sensor read out is so slow that rolling shutter just wrecks anamorphic if you are shooting anything other than a static shot on sticks. If I lived in Atlanta, I might’ve made an offer on your kit!

Although I'd say that regarding the RF mount, since RF is a bayonet mount it's always going to have a bit of play compared to a locking mount like PL, LPL, locking EF (an option on C500 II or C300 III) or locking E mount like on the FX9. This is an issue on all bayonet mounts, not just Red's.

    Appreciate your honesty. After listening to your experience, you have reinforced that I'll never own a RED. I've shot with rented/borrowed from RED REDs three times, (I was the editor for HD Video Pro at the time) all in LA and each time, RED had to send out a driver with a replacement camera because of software and firmware issues. I don't put up with unreliable cameras in production, the stakes are far too high. This is very annoying. The Komodo is known to have issues that are just part of being the first camera of a certain type or model. It's a Global Shutter camera which was an awesome offering at the time, especially for $6K. The app is not good on the Komodo, but is very smooth on the Komodo X - maybe it has something to do with the processing power? But now they have the V-Raptor X which has better dynamic range than the Arri Alexa 35, and is industry leading in that it is the first large format Global Shutter camera. That's the high end.

The decompress and encoding are mostly done by the CPU. Thats why here. In Brazil we are using Xeons 2696 V3 for exporting 6K BRaw 5/1, 3/1. A video with 10 mins length in 30fps with colour grading and texts, motions and soud mixing are exported in 7 Minutes. That's because the CPU has multicores (18) that are used to encoding. It's unbelievable what these Chinese processors can do after 10 years of old. Thats a good test by the way, and we all know that after exporting the game session begin...

      Tascam was one of the first to throw out the internal 32 bit recording . I’m a fan of the product , but not a fan of the UX.

    Hey really enjoyed your video! Bought this last month and used it on one shoot so far. Impressive features!! Mic clips are total cheap light weight plastic but otherwise all is well. Thanks - you were funny with great delivery! 🇨🇦

    Having gotten an Associates of Arts, but not having gone to film school, this episode resonated with me. It's definitely such a subjective decision. For me, being able to learn from and with people that DID go to film school, like Raff, Dan, Will and Austin, while also not having the crippling financial debt, was a nice middle ground. It did mean that when I moved to Atlanta in 2019, I was really getting my professional career started with just what I had learned on my own, and what I learned from a 3 month internship at a high end video production company. Which meant that I look back at so much of what I did in 2019 and 2020 (including working for DV) and cringe VERY hard. Not even in just the work, but the way I handled different business relationships. But not having a huge amount of debt meant that I could focus fully on my career and live off of my savings until I leveled out financially, which now I can say I definitely have. But I for sure benefited from those that did go to school, and were willing to help and teach me (like Raff letting me borrow his gear for the first few gigs I did, which to this day was such a pivotal shift in my career and I am so grateful to Raff for that). It's meant I've had to learn on my own, and haven't reached a level of producing the kind of stuff that DV does, which is fantastic, but I have reached a higher end of that realm of being a one-man band, and still get to work on some amazing projects, travel, DP, produce videos & commercials, edit, all that great stuff. The biggest thing I caution people with film school is just the financial aspect. Asking an 18 year old kid to spend like $50K-$100K on school when they aren't sure that's what they want to do can just destroy them financially. We certainly don't expect 18 year olds to get a $100,000 loan to buy a home, or buy a car, or invest in some business that they don't know they actually want to do or get, so that being the norm with school is just fascinating to me. So taking some time after high school to really feel out what they want to pursue I think is a great middle ground. Also, I identify so hard with Dan using glorified heat lamps from Home Depot as lights, as I did the same thing 😂

    Great info! As far as transparency goes, what is your take on displaying pricing on your website? Obviously every project is different, but some ballpark figures and examples. I'm working on updating my website and haven't decided to keep it in or lose it.

      Hey man thanks for the comment! I think sharing ranges for the categories you offer is fine, but unless it's a formulaic process like weddings I wouldn't get into too many specific numbers. Personally this is something I have not felt the need to add to my public site but i've always included ranges in the company pitch deck for all our services as well as individualized demo reels showing each genre of work.

    Awesome commercial and breakdown video guys. If you were presented with this type of commercial again, would you tackle it the same way (stop motion), or look into 3D animations for more flexibility in post? I can definitely see the advantages of both.

      Hey man great to see you on here thanks for the comment! I think as much as we love using 3D I think it would have been even more challenging. I do think it would have helped some of the morphing effects but overall the "real" feel stop-motion gives off is just something we've grown quite fond of.

    The phone images looked very nice but quite phone like and over processed/ compressed looking. I guess with more grading and softening you can make the apple image look less digital. In the end it is the successful telling of the story told that will determine the way the projects received. The red footage is less fatiguing to look at for longer periods of time. Fyi an ef lens set up with continuous auto focus ( in the RED focus setting choose focus>continuous> click the ok button to activate)could keep focus as well if you did not want to pull focus.

      Totally agree - it’s an amazing camera to keep on standby. Blackmagic should take notes this is actually a pocket cinema camera 😂 Regarding the auto focus on the Komodo- it’s rarely reliable. I would not recommend it to anyone , however there are some lenses it does seem to perform best with.

      @dreschervisuals yes for sure. I have mostly manual or cine lenses with the exception of a single EF II L 14mm lens I love Hehe loving my OG Komodo.

      Awesome man the Komodo is an amazing camera and provides a ton of flexibility in post! It's been a great workhorse for us since August, 2020! I'll have to try the 14mm that's a great focal length on the Komodo sensor. @@anthonyrock5039

      @dreschervisuals most definitely! I looked at most cams from the FX3 and the Black magic to even old school arri options but the arri was too big for my travel gorilla stripped down style shoot desires and the Black magic was economically challenged and awkward. The fX3 was nice but then the komodo was Sooo simple and the r3d 17:9 files exposed to traffic light happiness in HQ MQ through cine glass is just wow. When scenes are lit properly the files just go 💥💥💥💥🎬📽🎬

    Great comparison, and relevant to all of us these days as we are up against everyone with their phones. DOF is the easiest tell, then the subtlety of detail in the Komodo vs. the crunchiness of the iPhone. I wonder if the Blackmagic app for iPhone could've helped. One thing is for sure: current iPhone video is way ahead of just a couple of years ago out of the box, specifically with much less crappy sharpening. Color I can match almost anything. I prefer manual control over everything but Apple is doing post magic on the phone to do a lot of things I would do anyway, especially with photos. iPhone IS great for BTS while we are working without having a dedicated crew for that.
