@EuropeanResearchCouncil Project: Novel structures in scattering amplitudes
The research project „Novel structures in scattering amplitudes“, funded by the @EuropeanResearchCouncil (ERC), advanced the community's ability to make predictions for outcomes of collisions of elementary particles. The methods that were developed are at the intersection of current research in particle physics, mathematics and cosmology. At the workshop „Current Topics in Fundamental Physics“, scientists from @LMU.Muenchen, @TUMuenchen1, University of Turin @unitonews5070, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, @videosfromIAS and the Chinese Academy of Sciences discussed new directions for future collaborations, with the aim of answering questions about the fundamental constituents of the universe. „Fundamental research is driven by the curiosity of researchers“, says Prof. Dr. Johannes Henn, Director at the Max Planck Institute for Physics, acknowledging the unique character of the ERC.

I wonder what the implications of "the end of space time" are. It would seem like many assumptions about the universe being "all there is" would dissolve. If things aren't really concrete maby it's more about us being able to percept them? Because it's not like a clockwork ticking it's more like a stage of interactions. Maby that put's in to question the more materialistic interpretations of the world? If phenomena emerges maby the point is that there needs to be a perceiver? I'm just pondering.

Just as an example say that there is a smart geometrical way of analyzing the stock market that gives correct results, that doesn't mean that that's actually what's going on. Even if the amplituhedron gives good answers it still might be only like a mirror, giving data but just because it's reflecting (is a compact way of describing) the states of the world. Apparently you can analyse the features of any animal and gain knowledge about the earth and about it's physical environment because of that animals adaptation, the features are "built in" but obviously the animal is not the world. The map is not the territory. That's just my take right now at least.

    • @dp2404

@newdrug1880 you can say that about anything. We really know reality only through our senses And our senses have our survival as a goal. We know that we don't see things "as they are" In this context, we are thinking about things that we have trouble even imagining. However, in science, to say that a variable is "real" or in other wods it describes the world correctly, means that it is absolutely essential to the describe reality AND it gives predictions beyond other systems that don't have that variable This doesn't mean that as science advances, we can't find better explanations. So, things that once were thought to be real turn out to be emergent from more fundamental qualities. But it can also go the other way: complex numbers were thought as a neat method to simplify calculations in electronics. In QM, we discovered that we can't do without them. So we are now thinking that they are indead real.

Maybe the Universe doesn't really have "space" and "time" as we think about them today... Maybe the Universe that we inhabit is infinitely small, and all the "things" inside it are also infinite close to eachother... In such a Universe, the speed of light - even if finite - if it was able to travel in a straight line - it would be essentially infinite (its rapidity would be infinite) just like we see in special relativity, and also it would be a cosmic speed limit, because nothing would be able to travel more straight inside that Universe, than a straight line... Everything else that will have some sort of energy density and or mass, will have (for unknown reasons) to travel in a curved line, and thus, even if its speed was equal to that of light - since its bound to take a longer path - it will always arrive somewhere slower than light... So all of these satisfy special relativity... For general relativity you need this infinitesimal spacetime to be curved in infinitesimal small areas around planets and stars, and the light there will be FORCED to also undertake some sort of curve when it travels, thus slowing its speed (local it will still be the fastest thing in its local bubble...). And for quantum mechanics, since distances are infinitely short, you can very well have all kinds of quantum mechanical effects taking place withought violating Einstein's relativity and visa versa; But what about the accelerated expansion of the Universe then? Well, the accelerated expansion observable could probably be explained - not by more spacetime being added to the existing one, but as somekind of property changing inside the Universe that will make this expansion appear as a Rindler horizon to us.

I've often thought about how that the illusion of space exists in RPGs and I know that may sound really dense and stupid, but I'm not saying we live in a game. I'm only considering the fact that all we have is our perception and even our told and methods for measurement and experience are built around the concepts surrounding our abilities of perception. A game is designed to "trick" our perception into believing that a character is traversing real space over actual time as if space is real or time is real. We know they aren't what they seem in the game - despite our perception - because we created it. We don't know that outside the game. We trust our perception even though we can fool ourselves with a few hundred dollars of gaming equipment. Moreover, children under 7 often can't distinguish game or movie characters from real entities on a subconscious level. What if there was something that they couldn't distinguish even after 7 but they never learned that they couldn't because they never moved beyond that state in order to turn and look back on it and reflect? Just questions. I got no answers.

We've spent almost a century to find Dark Matter and Dark Energy but still there's no sign of them. No matter what we do, a thing that doesn't exist cannot be found even if we can justify its existence mathematically. May be it is time to find an Alternative Way to Explain Dark Matter and Dark Energy. 4-D Hypershere model of Universe can easily explain Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Void and even the reason why the measurement values of Expansion Rate are around 70 km/sec-Mpc. Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Gravity, Void and Antigravity, ... all these are same phenomena. They just look different. I agree to the idea that the interaction between mass and space must be explained with quantum mechanics. But that doesn't mean gravity is the QM phenomena. That's because gravity is not a force. Dark Matter, Dark Energy, Gravity, Antigravity, Void... all these are just joint effects of the expansion of the Universe and the curvature of spacetime. Details are given below. Einstein’s theory of General Relativity states that spacetime is curved by the presence of mass. This curvature influences the motion other objects with mass and gives rise to gravitation. Thus, gravity is a result of geometric features in spacetime. However, we also observe gravitational effects - curvature of spacetime - in areas without any detectable mass. This has given rise to the concept of dark matter, which is matter that does not interact in any detectable way with normal matter, except through gravity. So, there is some large quantity of dark matter scattered throughout the universe, which curves spacetime and causes gravitational effects just like normal matter, but we cannot see or detect it with any known method. An alternative theory to the identity of dark matter is proposed - it is not matter at all, but rather an intrinsic curvature of spacetime. In other words, spacetime is not naturally flat. Even in the absence of matter, we observe some inherent curvature of spacetime. So, the question is now - why is spacetime naturally curved? Why is it not flat in the absence of mass? The universe is 4-dimensional, with 3 spatial dimensions and one dimension in time. Rather than consider time as a linear dimension, we can consider it as a radial one. Therefore, rather than describing the universe with a Cartesian coordinate system, we describe it with a 4-dimensional spherical coordinate system - 3 angular coordinates, φ1, φ2, φ3, and one radial coordinate in time, t. We live on the 3-dimensional surface of a 4-dimensional bubble which is expanding radially in time. Thus, the Big Bang represents t=0, the beginning of time. The crucial point is that the expansion of the universe is not homogeneous in all directions. The expansion rate at one point on the bubble’s surface may differ slightly from another point near it. The universe is only roughly spherical in 4 dimensions, the same way that the Earth is only roughly spherical in 3 dimensions. The same way we observe local mountains and valleys on the surface of Earth, we observe local “mountains” and “valleys” on the surface of the universe bubble. The inhomogeneity of the expansion of the universe has given rise to natural curvature of spacetime. This natural curvature causes the phenomenon of “dark matter”. “Valleys” in spacetime pull matter in, similarly to the warping of spacetime of massive objects. So “dark matter” is really “valleys” in spacetime that are expanding slower than the regions surrounding it. These valleys tend to pull matter in and create planets, stars, and galaxies - regions of space with higher-than-average densities of mass. Conversely, “mountains” in spacetime will repel matter away, an “anti-gravitational” effect, which gives rise to cosmic voids in space where we observe no matter. Each point on the surface of the universe bubble traces out a time arrow in 4-dimensional space, perpendicular to the surface. These time arrows are not parallel to each other since the universe is not flat. This causes points to have nonzero relative velocity away from each other. It is generally accepted that the universe is expanding faster than observable energy can explain, and this is expansion is believe to be still accelerating. The “missing” energy required to explain these observations has given rise to the theory of dark energy. The time dilation caused by non-parallel time arrows can be proposed as an explanation for dark energy. Alternatively, dark energy is real energy coming from potential energy gradients caused by non-parallel time arrows. As a sanity check, we can calculate the expansion rate of the universe based on the universe bubble model. Since the radius of the universe bubble is expanding at the speed of light in the time direction, it increases at 1 light second per second. Therefore, the “circumference” of the 3-dimensional surface increases by 2π light seconds per second, or about 1.88*10^6 km/s. This expansion is distributed equally across the 3-dimensional surface, so the actual observed expansion rate is proportional to the distance from the observer. At present, the age of the universe is estimated to be 13.8 billion years, so the radius of the universe bubble is 13.8 billion light years, or about 4233 megaparsecs (3.26 million light years to 1 Mpc). Thus, we can calculate the expansion rate of the universe, per megaparsec from the observer, as: Expansion rate = ((d(circumference))/dt)/radiusofuniverse=(1.88*〖10〗^6 km⁄s)/(2π*4233Mpc)=(1.88*〖10〗^6 km⁄s)/26598Mpc=70.82(km⁄s)/Mpc The popularly accepted empirical expansion rate is 73.5 +/- 2.5 km/s/Mpc, so our calculated value is close. There may be some additional source of expansion (or observed red shift) to make up for the discrepancy. For example, if two adjacent points have some gravitational gradient due to non-parallel time arrows, then light passing through these points will be red-shifted. - Cited from www.academia.edu/82481487/Title_Alternative_Explanation_of_Dark_Matter_and_Dark_Energy

Your higher energy for higher frequencies thing feels like needing more energy to sing higher notes at a given volume VS lower frequencies. Makes sense if seen through engineering because more "beats" (wave cycles) require more energy, like beating a drum slowly vs quickly: a relaxed beat vs a workout. Oddly, recently it came to me that "black holes" could very well be new universes, not "singularities". I.e. our "universe" could very well be "inside" a black hole. It would be Indra's Net figuratively where each universe makes more universes via black holes of the stars each contains. It's funny and mind freezing. Since I'm sharing my insanity, there's another thing that came with that "blackhole universe" thing. Perhaps everything is "made of" or occurs within gravity. What we call "empty space" is 100% gravity. It would work in that mass merely intrinsically possess/create differentials of gravity. Masses possess/create differentials of gravity between others masses. This may not make sense or be waaayyyy off but hey it is what it is. LOL.

By determining the constancy of speed, all experiments and Michelson-Morley experiments are indirect and incomplete. If the Michelson-Morley experiment was carried out on a bus or airplane and was used to determine speed. only then will this experience be direct. Therefore, Einstein does not rely on the Michelson-Morley experiment. Question. Do you have an example of such direct experience? New technologies, new research tools. BIG SCIENCE doesn't want to eliminate the *BIG MUD* of noise in fundamental optical experiments. WHY? Let me suggest for schoolchildren and students on one's own to measure the Universe, dark energy, black holes, etc. To do this, I propose two practical devices. «laser tape measure *+reference distance* 1,000,000 m”» and «Michelson-Morley HYBRID Gyroscope». I am writing to you with a proposal for the joint invention of a HYBRID gyroscope from non-circular, TWO coils with a new type of optical fiber with a “hollow core photonic-substituted vacuum zone or (NANF)” where - the light travels 250000 (In a laser tape measure, the length of the optical fiber is fixed at 1000000 ) meters in each arm, while it does not exceed the parameters 84/84/84 cm, and the weight is 24 kg. Manufacturers of “Fiber Optic Gyroscopes” can produce HYBRID gyroscopes for educational and practical use in schools and higher education institutions. Einstein dreamed of measuring the speed of a train, an airplane - through the Michelson-Morley experiment of 1881/2024, and only then would the experiment be more than 70% complete. This can be done using a fiber optic HYBRID gyroscope. Based on the completion of more than 70% of Michelson's experiment, the following postulates can be proven: Light is an ordered vibration of gravitational quanta, and dominant gravitational fields adjust the speed of light in a vacuum. you can make scientific discoveries; in astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology, higher theoretical physics,... (We are not looking for ether, we will see the work of gravitational quanta) The result is a «theory of everything» in a simple teaching device and a new tape measure for measuring the universe.

Suppose we were able to “improve” Michelson’s experiment (1881) so that it determines; Aircraft speed is 300, 350, 400 meters per second. Question for you: what will change in BIG SCIENCE? New technologies, new research tools. BIG SCIENCE doesn't want to eliminate the *BIG MUD* of noise in fundamental optical experiments. WHY? Blaberring and confused by the end. Personally i quite like him, but after 10 years of listening to the 'end of spacetime' i would say he has to redically rethink.

Oh boy oh boy! What a fantastic talk this and I can tell you I have watched a lot of similar looking and sounding talks on the notion of space time etc this is by far the best I’ve come across. Well done professor am I look forward to further interesting outcomes from the research and thought experiments you all are doing! Interesting times ahead

All people dies. My own death may be a fleeting moment of fear, but the death of a loved one always haunts us while we're alive. It's especially agonizing when it could have been prevented-averted accidents or curable illnesses. Light is said to be of absolute speed, and it's believed that nothing can surpass it. This was Einstein's theory a century ago, so I believe there's a 99% chance It is wrong. Even if there were an absolute scale, how could we possibly find it at the current level of scientific understanding, barely making it to the moon? Anyway, currently, electromagnetic waves, gravitational waves, electrons, ions, and such have speeds similar to or equal to that of light. Instead of saying it's impossible to do before the experiment, isn't there a way to accelerate these things beyond the speed of light to send a signal to the past? For example, using a particle accelerator, solar gravity, or the solar-earth revolution cycle. As radio telescopes and satellites and cell phones are on standby 24 hours a day, isn't there a way to speed up electromagnetic waves and communicate with the past? If we find possible ways and experiment to find out whether or not, countless repetitions will naturally reveal paradoxes. We don't need to be trapped in a paradox in advance to restrict our imagination and possibilities. Personally, I think the absolute speed of light is just a barrier in the current dimension. If acceleration is faster than light, it may appear slower in our dimension, but In reality, I think it will be possible to communicate with the past or the future through other dimensions. You are much-much smarter than I am, so please find a way to communicate with the past or the future. My father, Kyu-dong Kim, was treated by doctors at Seoul National University Hospital for two months and passed away on April 15, 2024, due to their inadequate care. I want to see my father, Kyu-dong Kim, live to be over 100. I earnestly request it. Please allow us to communicate with the past or the future to prevent such a tragic death.
