This speech is beautiful for the reason that it is true, yet at the same time it is a flawed point of view. He thought Yui was being nice because it is in her nature to be, unable to see that her emotions and feelings are genuine. He has a snide view of the positivity Totsuka and the nerdy guy brings around him, and scowls at the sarcastic aid Yukino gives him because she honestly thinks he is hopeless. This was the Hachiman we all started with and his development from here has been a long and arduous emotional journey. Now look at him by the ending, the only ever heartbreaking thing was, Hachiman becoming happy yet at the cost of Yui experiencing genuine loss.

He's wrong, but going through a similar situation to him (purely platonic, no romance of course, this is an anime and they exaggerate circumstances to make situations clearer) I understand why Hachiman thought that way. The only difference is he never had friends, while I took the friends I had before college for granted.
