Road to Western States 100 2025 - Episode 2
Welcome to Episode 2 of my fortnightly vlog, documenting my journey to the Western States Endurance Run 2025, the world’s oldest 100-mile ultra marathon! In this video, I talk about the three races I’ve signed up for as part of my training, two more I’m hoping to get into, and some lifestyle changes I’m making to fully commit to this running goal. From cutting out tattoos and concerts to focusing purely on training, I’m going all in on the road to Western States.

Interesting update. Are you looking at accomodation yet? I was warned they over the next week or two a lot of places will become fully booked around the start area, so I've prioritised that over booking races etc. Fun choice to do the track race, what made you decide to do that one? I saw Cattle Decapitation in London last year and can see why you would take a break til June! Cheers and good luck
@KrisPeter Absolutely looking at accommodation, conscious like you say it may start to become fully booked, so got something booked for the start, still looking at the finish area but hopefully get something booked soon. The track race could be just a bit of fun, and good to try running on a track, ahead of the final 3/4 track we get to run at the end of WSER 😄😄
Love this. I'm also a Brit who got into WS next year. I think we qualified together at Race to the Stones in 2022. I also had 64 tickets. Still can't believe I'm in, it doesn't feel real! Will be following along with you. Maybe see you in June!
@KrisPeter Congratulations! That Race to the Stones was good heat training. Was bloody roasting in that race too wasn't it! Definitely see you in June 😎
Rtts 2022 was bloody awful for heat. It was a great qualifier though, so much easier than the other UK qualifiers - I can see why they removed it! Sorry if it's nosey, but who's your coach?
@@KrisPeter It makes sense they removed it. But I enjoyed it while it was a qualifier. My coach is Ally Beaven from Missing Link Coaching 😊
Brilliant Ian 🎉 can’t wait to follow along !
@keholmespt Yass Kate, hope you're well!! I'm on this hype train 😄😄
Congratulations! Be seeing you at Devil's Thumb!
Awesome, halfway through almost! If i'm messing about there, please kick me out of the aid station haha
looks amazing :)
@@jankajackiewicz9873 Brilliant race!
So pleased for ya man 👍🏴🦄😸 Savour the feeling knowing you’ll be on the line at Palisades in June 👌💯🤘👏💪🔥😎
@@HowardWortonjb71 Yassss cheers 🍻 - Buzzing for it 😎😎
Hope you can spend some time here! There's just so, so much to see. I'm down in the Santa Cruz mountains which is a very special area. A drive down the coast on the PCH from SF is well worth your time. Dozens of places to stop and you really can't go wrong. Davenport is a favorite. Marin headlands north of SF are another grand expanse. Stinson beach up to Mt Tam is one I've raced (Dipsea trail is legendary). You'll never see trees like coastal redwoods. Find some old growth if you can!
Don't be tempting me anymore 😂. Already been looking good up some areas to see before the race, and also after via Yosemite (may not end up doing it), will have to see how much leave I can get but the mountains and area there look absolutely stunning!!! Cheers for the tips. Will check them all out
There's a Loch Lomond near me but don't be fooled, it's just a mediocre artificial lake. 😅 The Sierras are a very special place. It's hard to even know where to start but Yosemite and Tahoe are the crown jewels for a reason! I did the Tahoe Rim Trail thru-hike 2 years ago, and ~1/3 of Skurka's Yosemite High Route last year. The tourist hordes in Yosemite Valley are obnoxious, but as with anywhere once you get a few miles and a thousand feet vertical away from parking, it thins out dramatically. In peak season I saw 2 people in 3 days on the YHR. The Valley IS very worth seeing, but starting from Glacier Point or up off Tioga Road could make your life easier if it's a peak weekend. Tens of thousand of acres you could spend a lifetime in and never be bored. Enjoy, and good luck!
Just subscribed - looking forward to following your journey
Cheers mate :)
Congratulations! I ran (and DNF'd) the Canyons 100-mile Endurance Run in Auburn this past April (video on channel), which is largely on the Western States trail. I'm still praying one of these years I'll get picked. Next up is UTMB lottery. Will be following your journey.
Cheers! Sorry to hear that, but will check out your video on it today, good to see some of the route used on WSER for sure
Would love to follow your training for this! Incredible efforts over a lot of years paying off. Very well played! *following*
@JimmyBeavers Cheers man, been a long time coming, glad it's finally happening now 😄
Subscribed. This is awesome. Congratulations on getting into WSER.
Awesome! Thank you!
Respect for running the WHW! I hiked it so I have an idea of the trail. Could not imagine to run it....
@Buszkraftowski Aw it was pretty hard work! Probably a more enjoyable experience is to hike it
What running spikes do you use Ian? 🤔😎
@dptrimmers I use the kahtoola microspikes, had them for about 6 years, they are bomb proof!
@ cheers man. 👍 I was looking at the camp ice master light but will have a look at the kahtoola. 😎
Amazing bro your a savage
Cheers mate, highly reccomended race!
Im sure you ran past me a few times on conic hill on Friday 18th October when I was walking the way in 3 days. 🤔 Gd effort man. 💪😎👍
@dptrimmers Ha that's true! I just checked and it was a double Conic that day
@ You were going well man. 🏃♂️You passed me on the way up conic from drymen side and passed me again when I was heading down to balmaha and you were flying back up again. 😎
@dptrimmers Was probably blowing out the arse 😆
@ You didn’t look it. 🤣 I walk the uphills. Only run the flat and downhills. 🤣
Great stuff man 🏃♂️
🤪
Respect for runing this trail. I hiked, could not imagine to run ist. Haste ya back.
@Buszkraftowski Hope you had a good time hiking, and it wasn't too wet! Such a beautiful trail
Brought back lots of memories - looking forward now to our trip next year
What was the music at the start of the video, it kicks ass!
@@strelleymagpie Hey, it's was one of the generic GoPro songs they let you use for free
Hehe... I saw me in ur video! I will recommend you to do the Thailand Chiangmai by UTMB. 5 stars race😂
@@Ml7177 Aw awesome, hope you got on better than I did 😆
Hi friend ❤
Nice video. We're planning to go next year and vlog.
A challenging race, thanks for sharing the nice vedio.
Hey mate, thought I recognised you! I ran the Mozart 80 and watched your video of the 100. I was the English guy who spoke to you on your way to the tai-o bus station after you retired. Sorry, your mind didn't follow suit, the rest of the race was very different!
@ianj878 Hey yeah, congratulations! I remember you because of the UTS top and how hot that race was this year too 😆😆
Thanks for sharing the beauty of the race and bringing us along. Kudos on pushing yourself and the honest debrief. It's a race that's on my list and watching your video brought me back to my days living in HK (now living in the US). Looks like you have many awesome videos and will go back and watch. Subscribed.
Congrats mate, good work.
Congratulations Derek 🍾 🎉
The 2nd coolest Derek u know
Do u highly recommend the artic nature tour?
@heyawesome7627 Yes, Northern Horizon were great we also used them for the Northern Lights Tour too, very good!
Full respect bro 😎 I was 28 hours I think! Loved it 🕺
Only feedback I would give for the video is that it would've been much better to just hear the audio of you running and the natural noises of the race/some commentary from yourself maybe. Other than that, well done mate what an achievement!
Thank you for sharing. I am so impressed with you getting all the characters. I’m doing dopey in 2025 for the first time and I’d like to stop for a few. I’m usually too afraid because I’m always in one of the later corrals and don’t want to risk it.
@Beth_runs_Disney Best of luck Beth! We tried again to get Dopey for 2025 but couldn't manage it. The character lines are long but it's very fast moving, quick photo and that's it, so don't be put off by the long lines, they move much much quicker than the ones in the parks for sure. You'll have a great race!
@@inkandtrails thank you! I am raising money for Give Kids the World for my Dopey bib. I didn’t even think I wanted to do it until after registration day!😄
Very wet , Extremely wet , DNF for me , Broke Left wrist put a end to my day 😢😢😢
Sorry to hear! It was crazy wet conditions and very slippy underfoot
That looked ... damp. Superb effort to push through. 👏👏👏
Cheers Martin
Well done mate,✌ ..✌
Cheers Ozzie!
Congratulations Ian! I also did the 100k, however, was very slow going in the 2nd half and when I arrived at the penultimate aid station (10k from Salzburg) the race was stopped prematurely by the officials! I and about 50 others suffered that fate. We still get "finisher" status, just for a 96k ultra and not a 106k :) I'd be interested to see your kit list.......I found that even a jacket with HH of 20 000 still let water in after that torrential rain and that combined with the wind was very very cold!!! Again well done for a fantastic time and for getting (all the way) to the end!!
Ah nice one, congratulations! I agree, my jacket has HH20,000 and was soaking wet after an hour. I had layers on from St Gilgen, and by the Koppl CP, I had a thick long sleeve Helly Hansen on, light t shirt, Montane Windproof jacket then a Montane Minimus Waterproof jacket on top. Everything was soaking but just about warm
@iangarnett4087 ha right not just me then. I really think that weather pushed everyone and everything to their limits. I had all sorts of issues with equipment: watch screen changing constantly due to being wet, phone settings changing which I'm still discovering today. One of the worst things was my head torch switching to battery saving mode for the last 2h and having no way to charge it due to my back up charger and cable, which were wrapped in a plastic eventually getting wet and muddy and dying! 2h alone in the dark in the mud with just over 1m view in front of your feet is no fun :D
Cool Video, I would have liked to see the scenes of the last Downhill from Nockstein (crossing this torrent 🙈🙈🙈), but understand that you was unable because of the cold, that was hell of Earth in the end! But pain is for the Moment, glory is forever 🤘
I wish I could have filmed more, especially the suepr steep mud sections on the final descent, and yes the bit where you hold the rope to cross the river. I tried a few and the videos looked crap. But yes - hell on earth!
Jeahhh
Congratulations!!! I ran the 106km race as well (finished in 16:59:35). It was a very hard race, but even though it was wet and cold, I still enjoyed it a lot!!
Congratulations Jari! Yes it was a very hard race but looking back now it was good memories and shared experiences on the trails!
This year edition shoulda been called Mozart Extreme 😅
Hahahha - very accurate 🤣
Hey, I remember you and I found myself in the the end of your video. I've been the one with the yellow rain jacket at 08:30. Congrats for finishing! ;) I subscribe to your channel. All the best, Hannes
I remember you, there was 2 of you? I stayed with you for a while passing people. And the clip you said were were behind someone on the steps trying to get past 😆😆. Congratulations to you also!
@@inkandtrails No, I was alone :)
I remember you, there was a Spanish guy behind you also and me too. Following your path 😊
Nice one Ian. Solid running. I did the marathon. Crazy day! But fun overall.
Type 2 fun! The big final climb and descent was brutal!
@@inkandtrails Ha. Definitely.
Congratulations 🔥🔥 the last big downhill was a hell
Congratulations to you also Remi!
@@inkandtrails thanks 🫶🏃♂️
Ok, believe how wet you said it was now 😂 congrats on a hard fought finish!
Haha yeah it was crazy wet 😆
good run :) it was a tough day out there!
Hope you got back for Eurovision in time! Thanks for chatting at the aid stations, really helped get me through that. Couldn’t agree more with the final comment 😂
You crushed it!!
Nice one - great run in a great time.
Good haul of hills, Ian! You hit some cracking weather until Day 4! No metal though!! 😄
Cheers Martin, it was a good long weekend apart from Fionn Bheinn 😂
I did FB solo in December in deep snow and zero visibility as it was getting dark. Probably the best way! 😆 Not the most spectacular.
You seemed to be smiling during the marathon, I guess you must have been delirious by that point?
Oh, man! I'm goin'. That's all there is to it. Winter or summer is my only decision! Your trip was epic. Great video and insight in to your experience. The marathon looked event tougher than what I saw on Strava. The dark, the wind and the snow!
