THE Motherboard for Next Gen White AM5 PC Builds - Gigabyte X870E AORUS PRO ICE Unboxing & Overview
AMD's "Zen 5" Ryzen 9000 series of processors have been on the market for some weeks now since they were launched in August 2024 - one thing that has been noticeably absent is the brand's latest 800-series chipsets. For some reason, AMD's chosen to launch these chipsets and their accompanying motherboards only after its Ryzen 9000 products have arrived on the shelves of retailers.
As it stands, motherboards with the high-end X870E and X870 chipsets are rumoured to launch on 30 September 2024, while budget-friendlier motherboards sporting the more affordable B850 and B840 chipsets are rumoured to arrive in the first quarter of 2025.
In the lead-up to 30 September 2024, ALKtech takes a look at a X870E motherboard that is targeted at consumers looking to build a high-end white-themed AMD Ryzen 9000 or Ryzen 7000 PC - the Gigabyte X870E AORUS PRO ICE. Sporting features such as a beefy VRM setup, PCIe Gen 5 support for a graphics card and M.2 drives, WIFI 7 support and so on, watch on to learn more about this motherboard!

      Yeah that's right - the lane sharing will happen regardless of which PCIe gen of SSDs that you install; even if you install a PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 SSD on the second PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot, the primary graphics card slot will still drop down to x8 mode...

    i really wonder how these 4060 compare to 7800xt or 4060ti when the 4060 is paired with a 5700x3d...and a 5600x with the more expensive GPU...its kind of a big deal when ppl are trying to run a 1000$ range build. Seeing as the 4060 X3D cpu offers the best cpu/budget platform which can scale with a GPU upgrade or higher resolutions better while still mitigating bottleneck for any 500$+ gpu upgrade for future generations in 2025 or 2026. For esports titles on low settings like cs/valorant/siege now deadlock. It seems like the X3D is the better starting point. 1440p/monitor upgrades being the aspect where a potential GPU upgrade comes into play. If you have a HUNGER for AAA/maxed settings titles a gpu around 400-500$ may seem better if you find yourself with a per frame adaptive sync monitor as far as NOW for that budget/range with a cheaper cpu. But to me it looks like a 5700X3D with a 4060ti is about on par with a 4070 and a 5600x or anything less from a cpu/bottleneck standpoint. As far as 2024/budget build options that will last a good 2-3 years even serve a good 70/80 series gpu upgrade before a platform swap with the 5000 series....im guessing a 80 is the highest amd is going to offer since they said they arent making flagship/range GPU...and the 7600XT still loses to the radeon VII or 2070S in 4k titles. So theres still some time for things to reach 4k as far as entry-midrange GPU no matter the vram. Seems more like vram helps/cheaper cards for uncapped-esports titles more than it will in higher res. Depending on the filters/settings for those AAA titles. Just seems like youre better off with an X3D 5700 and a second hand gpu, or a cheap/4060 range gpu if looking for new and you want features like DLSS/frame gen being a bigger aspect to PVE/AAA titles though DLSS/quality/performance does help for titles like warzone im sure for ppl on a budget and 1440p. At the TDP they pull theyre great for ppl on older/used psu...at 115-140+w on mobile theyre pretty great gpus/solutions for 1080p-1440p depending on the need. Thing is you can find some laptops for 800$ range with 4060's so it makes building a "budget rig" oriented towards upgrade potential...otherwise... i feel better off getting one of those laptops for multiplayer moba/fps/arpg vs getting that use out of building a rig with a budget range gpu. Best value is a 5700x3d with a second hand snipe/win. Or youre potentially better off with a 4060 laptop if your needs arent AAA/maxed out gaming or huge/multiplayer titles like warzone even then with an 8c laptop its not as bad as some older platforms/bottlenecks with modern GPU. So its hard to find a concept of value in the budget/range...bc the return selling a 1-2 year old gaming laptop IMO is easier to fetch/sell than a budget/range gaming pc. So if you have no intent on upgrading IMO i say get a 4060 laptop with an 8c processor 1tb drive and ideally 32gb for <1000$. Save for a GRANDER rig in the meantime....and sell that laptop in 1-2 years towards a future platform and better gpu, than getting a budget rig/cpu/board psu and trying to build up from that starting point-upgrade point.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech วันที่ผ่านมา

      Looking at the specs sheet, both boards are largely similar, though with the Gigabyte board you mentioned, you do get one more PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot - but it comes with all that PCIe lane sharing stuff that will affect your graphics card slot's bandwidth. Personally, I'd prefer an all-white board for an all-white build, and the Gigabyte has white components too compared to the ASUS. In any case, I'd have to compare prices between both boards before making a decision!

  • @Darkswordz
    @Darkswordz 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    This seems really limiting on PCIE lanes for what is supposed to be an X870E board. You're basically limited to two NVME drives if you don't want to neuter your graphics card.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah...it's because of mandatory USB4 support, where some PCIe lanes from the CPU have to be set aside for the USB4 controller instead, resulting in lesser lanes for M.2 drives and hence this entire lane sharing situation. That said, there are some benchmarks out there that demonstrate how having your graphics card run at x8 speed might not result in thaaaat significant a performance drop - of course, your mileage may vary with the type of GPU and of course the type of game in question.

    Great Overview! Really appreciate you showing this board! Kinda baffled though about the nvme slots. Like so what is the point of the second + fourth nvme slots even being there if they make the gpu slot go to x8 mode due to sharing cpu lanes. I understand for accessibility but basically if you want peak gpu performance for a current high end gpu or future pcie 5.0 one you really only have 2 nvme slots (first & third).

    • @prototypep4
      @prototypep4 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      To be fair even the 4090 can barely use pcie 4.0 x16. X8 only drops performance by single digit fps. It's honestly not even worth worrying about at all. The PCIE bandwidth is already sufficient. If 50 series are 5.0 then I don't see x8 even really being a factor on performance.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Glad you found the video useful! The lane sharing situation seems to be more pronounced with X870E and X870 motherboards, and I suspect that this is due to the fact that AMD has made USB4 mandatory, where some CPU PCIe lanes have to be routed to the USB4 controller, leaving lesser lanes for other peripherals and connectors. That said, as @prototypep4 pointed out, while the performance drop might be negligible at times, my two cents is that it's still something to take note of, especially if I were to be caught unaware about this whole PCIe lane bifurcation situation, and be unknowingly leaving performance on the table - I'd feel worse especially if I had shelled out a good amount of cash for say, a RTX 4090 and would hence expect only the very best out of my GPU!

    • @prototypep4
      @prototypep4 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @ALKtech While I can appreciate the argument about leaving performance on the table, current gen is not maxing out 4.0 x16 and moving to 5.0 if it runs at x8 it'll be the same bandwidth as 4.0 x16 anyway. I don't think the 5090 is going to be such a monster to require it to gain more than even 15fps at the absolute most. For benchmarking? absolutely rip out any other drives and go for gold Me personally will be doing that just to push my overclocks as hard as I can but once I've got my numbers I'm shoving in a second drive. The performance drop will be negligible and I truly hope reviewers are responsible enough to test and show what the drop will actually be.

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, you'll have to use the first Gen 5 M.2 slot (M2A_CPU) and the Gen 4 M.2 slot (M2D_SB) - populating these two slots will not result in any lane bifurcation that will cut the GPU to x8!

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech 4 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hello! With this board, you won't get any lane sharing with a sound card installed on the PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 3.0 slot. However, seeing as you have three M.2 drives in your system, you will still encounter lane sharing due to the fact that two of the three PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slots share lanes with the primary PCIe 5.0 x16 slot for a graphics card 😅 this means your graphics card will operate at x8 mode instead with three M.2 drives installed...

      @@prototypep4 yeah I do think it's kinda a missed opportunity that ASUS went with black connectors and hardware for their white motherboard offering - but hey, I guess there could still be folks out there who would still like some form of contrast and could be using say, standard PSUs and cables that are black in colour for their build 😂

      @@liekarts2936 ah right! For the ASUS X870-A that I put out a video on, I suspect it might be a little cheaper than the Gigabyte though...this is because the Gigabyte uses the X870E chipset while the ASUS uses the pared-down X870 chipset! So it's not really a like-for-like comparison 😅

    Is it possible to use a sound card in the second slot or will it castrate the GPU?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Using a sound card in the second PCIe 4.0 x16 slot that operates at x4 mode won't affect the bandwidth of the primary PCIe slot for your GPU, but you will have to sacrifice the third M.2 slot, M.2_3, as it shares bandwidth with the said second PCIe slot!

      @@ALKtech so better get an x870e or an x670e?

    • @ALKtech
      @ALKtech 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@napalmarsch it really depends - how many M.2 SSDs are you intending to use in your system? Granted, X670E boards seem to have no/little instances of PCIe lane sharing; in the absence of pricing info for X870E and X870 boards, I'm guessing that X670E and X670 boards are probably gonna get cheaper and could offer better value too, but do bear in mind you won't get features like faster memory support and USB4 support. Perhaps wait till 30 Sept for pricing details to be available, before making a decision!
