Hi, Kanonical here! I'm a transgender girl who loves playing and talking about video games. I make videos about whatever interests me, mostly Kirby and Touhou. I want to make scripted videos which take a lot of time to make so my upload schedule is really inconsistent.

Entryway Official Touhou Games
Hi, Kanonical here! This thought of “Which Touhou game would be a good starting point” has been stuck in my head ever since I played PCB for the first time so I’m finally putting that thought to rest by making this video. Keep in mind these are what I personally think are the best entryway into the series and there definitely are others that could still work as one.
I was worried for a pretty long time about making a video for a somewhat broader audience since I thought that would alienate my fans and then I realized during editing that that thought was stupid since I’ve already made a video that was a little adjacent to this one (the custom starting lives video).
Also about the tidbit about EoSD’s dialogue, I’m specifically talking about EoSD’s dialogue and not the characters. I like a lot of the EoSD cast, Sakuya was one of my favorites early on, but what made me love those characters is the future games and manga that fleshed them out, not the gibberish in EoSD.
For the Mountain of Faith section, I genuinely forgot about Marisa B’s 3 Power Glitch and remembered it was a thing during editing. So yeah, another point for MoF, I guess.
During the Imperishable Night section I forgot to write / talk about Spell Practice. In short it’s a practice mode that lets you practice a specific bosses attack. Every Windows Touhou game does have a practice mode but the primitive ones in EoSD / PCB, MoF ~ UFO and LoLK only let you start from the start of a stage, which is really tedious when you only want to practice one specific segment of the game. Spell practice (mostly) fixes this by letting you start from any spell card which are the bosses main attacks. Tldr, it’s way more convenient for practice than what was previously offered.
By the way, I know Lily White does drop items for you in Unconnected Marketeers, I just wanted to play it up for a tiny bit of comedic effect.
In the original version of the script I talk about the Fighting Game spin offs as well, but I cut it since I did want to finish this video at some point and the script was kind of just sitting there finished for months. Maybe I’ll make a follow up video on those games if I still feel like it in the future.

Hi, Kanonical here! Today is Autumn Reitaisai so I thought I should make something Touhou related for the occasion (and totally not because I keep procrastinating on working on videos). I did this quiz because I thought it would be fun and it definitely was, but I do feel like I should have turned off the timer. Good thing my entryway was Touhouwiki because I know nowadays almost every franchise has their own wiki page, though most of them are on Fandom
The Touhouwiki used to be, but then there was a split and Fandom even tried to stop them leaving.
As someone who started with HRtP and went strictly chronologically (skipping fighting games) I am, in retrospect, surprised by how well it went. I don’t think I would actually recommend it, but I regt nothing and it made me experience/appreciate certain things in a way that I couldn’t have otherwise
If someone is already planning to dedicate a lot of time to playing all the Touhou games, then that's a fine way to go about it. I assume it's pretty cool to see the series' evolution.
@ It sure was! But when I started I only really knew „So many things on the internet are Touhou related, must be fun to be a part of the community“. That, coupled with my unwillingness to spoil myself (at the time) caused me to have a bit of a confusing time whenever I tried to interact with the windows dominated fandom🙃
As someone that started with EoSD as my 2nd game i regret it, that game is unbelievably hard in a weird way, though i never understood the fps issue people seem to mention since mine just runs like normal in 30fps
Game usually on newer PCs runs way too fast as if there is no cap. 30fps is not normal either btw, the game is supposed to run at 60fps.
@Kanonical I must be misremembering then, it has been a few years since I played EoSD I guess it was at 60fps Maybe the reason mine runs just fine is probably the one I got is already pre-patched so it doesn't just go 999 fps
@@blux_cross If you got it from Moriya Shrine that probably is the case.
So you're telling me I was a trooper, and a fool, for somehow playing Embodiment of Scarlet Devil first, and after finally getting it to not run at 999 fps, I got my ass kicked in easy mode for one of the harder games?? No wonder why it scared me from ever downloading the other games😭
Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is more middle of the road in terms of difficulty in this series but yes that is what I'm saying.
This is a really solid video I personally started with Ten Desires, which I don't think is a good entry point. While the patterns are on the easier side, the resources are difficult to obtain, and even when you know how to get them, they're still quite scarce. Generally more resources are what makes a good entrypoint imo, as it gives more leniancy for beginners when they screw up, and also lets them bruteforce harder sections with bombs. I think Touhou 17 could also make a good starting point, as the patterns (on easy mode) aren't that difficult, and the game has quite a few resources, plus the beast spirits Roaring Mode is similar to the Cherry border, allowing you to take a hit, which makes the game more leniant on misteaks. Although the Beast Spirits themselves can be a bit of a beginners trap and can encourage reckless play, so its understandable why it isn't here. Aside from that, I agree with the rest of this video, I do think 18 is the best starting point, with the ability card system being both fun and letting the player either become very powerful or gather a ton of resources (especially with the ability to buy lives at the end of a stage).
I completely agree on everything you commented. The number of resources in a game definitely is a major deciding factor on whether a game's beginner friendly or not. I did debate on putting WBaWC on here but I personally think the beast spirits would be more frustrating if you're not used to bullet hells. Now that might be more of my UFO trauma affecting my opinion, idk.
Window size seems like an odd thing to note - don't most people (want to) play in fullscreen? (or am I just weird?) (If fullscreen is tiny with huge borders, too, (or super stretched or cut off or something) that's not the game's fault - need to change the scaling mode in your GPU settings ("preserve aspect" or "integer" is what you want). Not sure why some PCs default to dumb settings) As a scrub-tier player I can confirm the TH10 continue system really just kinda sucks. Not getting to practice the last couple spells much is one thing, but I think the combination of being able to replay the same stage over and over but loosing that "progress" if you quit the game just isn't very fun. It lacks that natural "that's it" moment where you have enough of the game and come back later. And to me that's really part of the appeal for this sort of game. I still love TH10 though, so idk.
I honestly didn't know integer full screen was a thing, that's useful information for most people, especially for people who're just getting into the series! Unfortunately I am a weirdo who likes playing in windowed 720 for all my PC games (mostly because I can look at obs and stream chat while playing) so I don't think I'll use that method. Thanks for telling me though! I'm definitely going to repeat this information to anyone I personally introduce to the older titles from now on!
I actually revisited this game on my own time earlier this month alongside ULiL and so the title definitely grabbed my attention. I love this game. I didn't get to enjoy it very much my first time around because I got into the series in 2015 and can confirm that yes, the game did have trouble running when I first tried to play it, usually being completely engulfed in a black screen (granted I was also a Linux user at the time, so not exactly a completely fair way to look at it). I think the story for this game is excellent stuff. Kokoro is probably one of my favorite characters in the series and she's easily one of my mains in all three of the floater games, with my main team in AoCF specifically being Marisa and Kokoro. On the topic of it's soundtrack, shout out to "Morning Clouds", the ending theme. I think that one is incredibly underrated, I listen to it a lot. Personally I will say I disagree on the art of later Twilight Frontier titles not being as good in comparison, Moe Harukawa's style is my personal favorite of all the Touhou art styles, but to each their own. I did run into an issue that wasn't mentioned in this video. One thing I'm glad they toned down in the two fighter games after this is gimmick fighters. Gimmick fighters either felt way too empowered by their gimmick or way too punished by it. For example, Nitori's gimmick of being super overpowered but having limited ammo, and then when the ammo drops she becomes garbage. A gimmick so bad on both ends they had to just balance her in the next two fighting games and remove the gimmick altogether. I'll also mention that when I first got into the game in my teenhood I was also originally disappointed they moved away from the Soku gameplay style, but currently I think I'm actually glad they decided to try something new. Another fighting game series I used to be into was Smash and I'm honestly super bored of it's formula now six entries in, the games stopped feeling unique after the 3DS one. Meanwhile even after six Touhou fighters, I feel each one is unique enough from each other to stand out as a game on it's own merits, and I feel like the significant change between Soku and HM really helped with that. HM may be rough but it wasn't afraid to do something new. Not really something I think enough people appreciate I guess.
Thanks for watching the video! Happy you replayed two of my favorite games in the series (ULiL's actually my favorite one)! Glad to see you like it too! I had only really heard about Hopeless Masquerade's technical problems in passing but that definitely seems really bad. Now I'm wondering which had it worse HM or Gouyoku Ibun. I'm sorry if I couldn't get this across correctly in the video, but I wasn't really trying to say the art from the newer games is worse, what I meant is that IaMP~HM's art style is the one I associate Touhou/Twilight Frontier with, so I personally have a bias towards it and it feels weird to see the newer games without it. But I do still like the fact the later game's art are handled by artists who worked on the written works. I personally think TOKIAME's art style fits the series very nicely. Honestly I kind of forgot about the gimmicks (says the person who plays as Koishi in HM) but thinking back, yeah some of them are bad especially Nitori. She felt really helpless when she runs out of ammo and that was against CPU's in story mode. Can't imagine how much worse it is against an actual player. On Smash Bros since I've played a decent bit of that series, I get what you mean. While I really like Ultimate and it's overabundance of content, I do still prefer how Melee and even 64 feel to be honest. From my understanding they've been reusing a lot of the code since Brawl, which makes sense, Ultimate's large roster wouldn't be possible without doing that. But doing so probably caused the series to stagnate. I do hope they do something a little different for the next one.
Nice video! ❤️ just watched this vid then got addicted to your content lol. Maybe you can do a 2hu character ranking based on your likings of them in the future?
Thank you for the kind words! It makes me really happy that people actually care about my videos! As for your suggestion, I've already done a Touhou Sorter twice on my Twitch streams, maybe you could watch those on my Stream Archives channel if you're curious. They had a TOUHOU AMUSEMENT PARK?!? WAS IT IN JAPAN?!? Were kids allowed? They gotta, right? Were there any 30 year old grown nerds there, OBVIOUSLY there would've! Were there meet&greets with the touhou characters LIVE, if it's in Japan, did they understood English? Were there any Non-Japanese weebs there? Were there old people there? And WHY was there an education center there?!? Also, this feels SO SURREAL...also, Are you Japanese yourself? And did they have a haunted house? If not, THEN WHY?!? THE WHOLE GAMES ARE ABOUT MISHEVIOUS YOUKAI GIRLS!! ALSO, WHY NO PHOTOS OR VLOGS FROM YOUR VISIT?!?....so..PLEASE ANSWER ALL OF MY QUESTIONS!!! (Also, if THERE ARE VLOGS OR PHOTOS or videos of people going there...CAN YOU SEND ME A LINK PLEASE? ♥)
To answer your questions: It was in Japan. There were a lot of kids there, Touhou's probably more popular with kids nowadays from what I've heard (and seen). I didn't see too many adult nerds, I think it was mostly families, There weren't any meet and greets, I don't think that would even be possible. I don't actually remember if I saw anyone from overseas, but I went in early July weeks before Summer break starts for some people so that was probably a factor. Education center is just a unique thing Yomiuri Land always has and as I previously stated Touhou's really popular with kids. Yes I'm Japanese. No they didn't have a haunted house I complain about it in the video, they probably didn't want to go all out because they didn't know how successful the event would be (maybe they'll do one next time if it ever happens again). I don't have too many photos or videos because, I'm a transgender person who dislikes her body and doesn't want to show it on camera, it was my first time making this kind of video, I had no plans of actually making the video before I went and I thought I had enough to talk about in a video after the fact, and I didn't want to be the idiot who's potentially filming without permission. For other vlogs just search 東方よみうりランド and you'll find some (although it seems like my video's the only one in English).
@@Kanonical Wait...WHY IS THERE no meet and greets? And how will they do the touhou themed haunted houses? Obviously they would've used the youkai girls...but HOW?!? The touhou youkai are just cute anime girls...how would that spook people out? Unless if they were in those uncanny anime girl masks called animegao/kigurumi!

Thank you for the vlog! It is an interesting experience indeed, wish I could go there someday.
Maybe you could go next time it happens, I would be shocked if it doesn't happen again considering how well this collab is doing.
im glad you enjoyed it but bro please cut your nails
I'll probably cut them when I start playing Touhou Danmaku Kagura Phantasia Lost again.
This collab sounds amazing lol. They should add some more touhou decorations to the rides, add a touhou theme to the haunted house, and sell more touhou merch and food. I think they could make a decent amount of money doing collabs with amusement parks since touhou has a large portion of the fanbase that is under 19 (around 40%). Also I'm glad they didn't put cirno in the educational section, they would have turned the kids into idiots lol.
I hope they do any of those next time the collab happens. Let's be real, they're probably going to, literally every piece of merch for the collab sold out and they extended the period for a month. If it's this popular I have no doubt in my mind they'll do it again. Also Cirno's one of the characters on the ramune so I wouldn't be so sure about that last part.
I wonder...would they add ALL of the touhou girls to the haunted house..or at least a big half of them...cause most of tohou girls ARE YOUKAI.
Hot damn, is Touhou actually still popular with the youth? Here I was under the impression that it was just old men like me that still like it

Thanks for sharing this- as an American Touhou fan and theme park enthusiast, I was curious to know how this event turned out. Seems like it was about what I expected from it (that is to say, a bit underwhelming). What are your top five theme parks, by the way?
It has been a while since I went to any amusement park so my memory might be clouded but I loved Universal Studios Japan when I went as an Ex Harry Potter fan (before I knew much about the author), Disney Land and Disney Sea I loved before I grew out of Disney, and I remember loving Fuji-Q Highland every time I went to it (which was quite a number of times btw). The fifth one is a toss up between quite a few but I barely remember any of them, I've only been to them once and I'm blanking on the name for some of them, so I guess I'll just say Tokyo Joypolis.
@@KanonicalThanks for the list! DisneySea is actually near the top of my park bucket list, believe it or not. If I ever make it out to Japan, I'm going there for sure.

2:09 Now that you mention It... you forgot to mention how Touhou Koumakyou ( Eastern Scarlet Devil Land ) was originally supposed to be Touhou Kouchakan ( Eastern Scarlet Teahouse ) since Teahouse is supposed to be a reference to Stage 3 and It's Boss Meiling... but then changed it in development to match the Game's Story since well... The SDM isn't EXACTLY a Teahouse for say ...
Neat, I didn't know that! I guess that's why the stage 3 theme's called Shanghai Kouchakan.
congrats bru 105th sub from me :)
Thanks!
Played this game religiously since it came out until it died. Honestly the main reason the game died was because of how the mobile market environment works; essentially paid games do not do well on phones and you need to make "free" apps with lots of microtransactions and scummy business practices (to promote whaling, for example). The live service model is a popular one, but it requires people to play as long as possible through the form of 200 inconveniences and waiting and energies and a million materials you have to grind etc. Also the second you decide your game needs servers to function you're basically killing your game before it even launches, because servers are not eternal and you need money to mantain those. It is hard to figure out how many of these decisions were DenA's and how many came from Unknown X themselves, tbh. I'm just saying that if Unknown X was the one who decided this game had to be a gacha then they're the ones who pulled the trigger on the game, lol. Anyway it should have been a paid release from the start. There are a lot of those in phones, pc and consoles, so glad to see the game is saved from live service hell.
I personally think DeNA's the cause of the microtransactions. I mean they're track record (that I'm even slightly knowledgeable of) of Pokemon Masters alone is making me say that. Also if I remember correctly, according to Jyunya, who's basically the spokesperson for UnknownX / Aquastyle and also part of the Graphics Team of DanKag, said that they're original vision was a Bullet Hell with Rhythm Game elements. The current state DanKag is in is probably very different from what they initially wanted.
Like I Really Like Touhou 17.5 and Consider that My Favorite Touhou game but I'm fine on your opinion on 17.5 not being the same sense it more of a Action Boss Rush than a Fighting game
The only point I tried to make when bringing up Touhou 17.5 was how bad of a state it was in at launch. While Touhou 17.5 is my least favorite Twilight Frontier game, I still like it a decent amount.
whoever said its one of the worst games in the whole series probably hates fighting games
From what I recall they said they didn't like it because it was janky and unpolished (I'm pretty sure they were talking about mainly the controls).
As someone who played touhou 7.5, 10.5 and 12.3. I have to say touhou 13.5 gameplay feels very off. I don't hate it but also not a fan of it
There are a lot of things weird about this game's controls. No dash button, the fact that block is holding any button (and every button is attack), or maybe just the fact that it's an aerial fighter that controls quite differently than most fighters since you can jump down as well. I don't mind the controls but I admit Touhou 10.5, 12.3, 14.5, 15.5 control way better than this game. Although Touhou 17.5 is definitely the worst offender when it comes to clunky controls.
its a p good game
It indeed is.
4:14 also no replays and scoring in100th Black Market plus Touhou 19
I actually didn't know that since I haven't played either of those yet. Thanks for telling me!
Back when I first played MS, I had to increase starting lives just to get a simple 1CC, and this was a pretty useful feature. However, when playing EoSD, I didn't use this feature for whatever reason. In a way, having less lives led to me getting better as a whole since I would constantly have to practice the early game and eventually progress further and further with each run. I guess less lives could potentially lead to more practice, and this leads to more skill gain. In general, increased lives is good when you don't want to deal with endless struggle, while the default causes more struggle with the reward of getting much better at the game in exchange. Swag video!! :D
Thanks! :)
Zun didn't actually "forget" the spell practice. In IN it was (according to the afterword) a cautious experiment, in TD it was brought back as a form of fanservice (yes, once again, according to the afterward) and then for LoLK it was deemed unnecessary due to the existence of pointdevice mode.
I honestly didn't know about any of that (I guess shows the lack of research I do for videos some times). Still I don't think that excuses it not being in LoLK though.
"bullet hell" is a somewhat misleading name. it's not actually a genre but rather a sub-genre of shoot-em-ups. it's called as such not because it's necessarily difficult (touhou is actually one of the easier ones and was even meant to be a starting point for beginners as stated in ZUN's eosd afterword) but because it just simply has a lot of bullets. the earliest shmups, often called classic shooters or "dad shmups", had few bullets due to technical limitations, so to compensate, they'd typically have large hitboxes and super fast bullets. examples would be gradius, raiden or r-type i'd guess ZUN removed the ability to alter starting lives because he realised that you get a ton of resources to begin with anyways. hrtp has infinite score extends, lls has 10 lives and 31 bombs, pcb has borders and a shot type with 4 bombs per life, and in has easier deathbombs. even at default settings you can make a ton of mistakes in these games and still 1cc. it's no wonder that the first game to remove this feature is also the same game that lets you spam bombs with its generous power system having more lives isn't really accessibility. it doesn't make the game any easier to learn or play, it just allows the player to make more mistakes. had ZUN truly cared about accessibility he would've added solid practice modes, but even his most recent entries still don't let you practice individual stage sections or nonspells. if it wasn't for thprac players wouldn't have improved as fast as they did lowering lives for a challenge is pointless because you could just attempt to beat the game with more lives remaining at the end. the games even reward remaining extends with score so why should starting with less lives increase score? i don't see how a new player could ever accidentally start with less lives. this just seems like a score file issue to me this is a tangent but ZUN did not "forget" to add graze in mof. even though it can be beaten in only 21 minutes, it actually has the longest spell timers of any game in the series, so if it had graze, it'd take forever to complete a score run. just because it lacks graze doesn't mean it's inherently less interesting or deep (i personally dislike graze) shot slow was meant to recreate CAVE's control scheme but unfortunately due to ZUNgramming there's lag when going from unfocus to focus and vice versa slow mode also exists in soew, lls and ms. i consider it the equivalent of playing at low fps which is a terrible method of training
I do know that Touhou is an easy bullet hell, I've mentioned it a lot during my streams (although I've never actually played another one). The lowering lives thing I was thinking more as an self imposed challenge like something like a Nuzlocke. The graze thing was from someone I sometimes talk to that complains about it every time anyone mentions that game. I don't actually know how it affects score since I'm not a score runner. As I stated in the video, I've seen a lot of streamers playing Touhou for the first time accidentally changing the number of starting lives when changing around the setting in the option menu. I got so infuriated by it that it alone is the main reason this video exists. I didn't know that SoEW had slow mode since I haven't played that game. For LLS and MS, I'm just stupid, I guess. The rest of the comment is completely valid and is a result of my lack of research for this rushed video. (I am terrible at research so I'm not confident that I would have been able to see those points even if it wasn't rushed) This video was made by me, who is a casual fan of the series, so I guess I could excuse it as a casual fans perspective. I made this video since I remembered hearing a lot of complaint about the series removing custom lives after MoF. I didn't intend for it to be from an experts perspective. Thank you for taking your time and making such a long critique. It actually makes me realize that people actually watch my videos till the end. These kinds of comments probably makes me the most relieved, weirdly enough. Honestly my videos are pretty flawed when it comes to research (Again, I'm horrible at it). It's a really bad habit I've had for a really long time, and I'm pretty sure it came from almost a decade of learning English from watching TH-cam and guessing what words mean. This isn't the first time it's happened and I don't think it'll be the last either, so please tell me when it happens again.
Good content, wish you more subs!
Thanks!
we need more good content like yours, touhou has been going downhill recently
Thank you for the compliments but I do disagree. I'm still a complete amateur when it comes to making videos, and there's a lot of people who make way better Touhou videos than I do that I look up to, like AspreyFM and MegaPig9001 for example.
@@Kanonical the fact you make touhou videos with effort and no just posting NSFW "memes" and links is good enough for me
Fair enough. I never watch those so I think the algorithm buried them from me. I don't think I'll ever stoop that low. (Or at least I hope to god that I never do.)

The th12 UFOs have literally no RNG though. You can control them 100%. It's just really hard. But hey, everyone has that one game they hate. I'd vote th7 down to F. Also another SA+UM enjoyer Edit: spelling
I do know they aren't random, but it feels like they are and they're infuriating to try to collect, especially when you get a color you weren't aiming for. UFO was the only one I actively wanted to stop playing.
As much as people like to bash on the game for being the worst from the official fighting genre options on Touhou, it is actually my favourite, the range of things you could do by changing your character's faith(playstyle) is what gives it that edge over its successors that went down the easy route of 'no more thinking required anymore.'
While I can't really say much about the future games since I haven't played them yet, this game honestly has become my favorite fighting game so far, just because of the art, animation, music, and writing alone.
@@Kanonical Fully agree, funnily enough the art part is specifically ganged upon a lot and despite that I like its uniqueness in the colour scheme scope. Personally I would have also loved more characters or story material, but can't be greedy there.
@@taodivinity1556 Alphes' art gets better every game, I would honestly have liked if they got one more entry in the series.
