Is Dexter a Hero or a Villain?
🩸 Dexter Morgan: Hero or Villain? 🩸
Dive deep into the twisted world of Dexter as we explore the moral complexity of TV's most iconic anti-hero. Is Dexter a vigilante bringing justice to those who slip through the cracks ⚖️, or is he just another self-serving killer hiding behind a code? 🪓
We break down his strict adherence to the "Code of Harry," his chilling manipulations 😈, and his moments of vulnerability 💔. From saving lives to shattering them, Dexter’s duality forces us to ask: can someone do monstrous things and still be a hero? Or is his "justice" just an excuse for his darkest urges? 🧐

Harry was for sure the one to blame for everything Dexter did and caused. Doris insisted Dexter would see a shrink cause she knew he was different and was afraid he would become a bad person. What Harry did ? He told Dexter to lie about his thoughts to the doctor who tested him. Harry cause Laura's demise, abandoned Bryan and made Dexter believe he had to sucumb to his urges. Harry was the true villain in the end.
For me, brians death served as a message to say how dexter will never find someone who understands him quite like brian did.
I think Harry in his own way was as messed up as Dexter.
Dexter is alot like red hood tbh and Dexter is a anti hero he just does it in his own twisted way
He is doing bad things but with good consequences: another murderer stoped. But, in some cases he is breaking his code, which i would say absolutely making him no-hero. But i wouldn't say he is villain, maybe more like anti-villain?
Well, considering I’m a punisher fan. You know what side I fall on. Dexter has made some mistakes, but he’s owned up to them. He even let Harrison shoot him. Essentially the world needs a Dexter or a punisher. The law is not perfect. Sometimes it needs a course correction. But you know, I represent Frank Castle every day. So this is just me being me. To me, Dexter’s biggest mistake was letting Trinity outsmart him. In death.
why is no one mentioning Dr. Vogel?
He's neither. He does evil things with good intentions most of the time. That being said he does have innocent blood on his hands also (rude red neck photographer he killed and logan) As for killing trash he said it himself everyone he kills are unchecked versions of himself had he not got taught the code he'd have just been another psycho killer .
Definitely a villain but a villain that I'd be okay having in my city.
Someone will disagree with what I am about to say but I don't particularly care; dexter kind of was the good guy( in the beginning) and the writers should have kept him that way concerning how he stuck to his father's code of going after bad people only; he could have ignored that and went after anyone he wanted at any time, he could have given in to the temptation of killing the security guard his brother had laid before him at the abandoned hospital or his sister at their childhood home but he chose to follow his father's rules despite his own issues with him because deep down he really didn't want to hurt innocent people and season after season was showing him striving to be a better person and was achieving that slowly especially with lumen in season 5 and brother sam in season 6, Hannah in season 7 Was the worst character ever thought of for her corruptive influence is what brought down Dexter's Integrity and ruined him from being the lovable and honorable character we all know from the books and earlier seasons, the show's 2 endings was I feel very disappointing because they wrote it and his character all wrong for he wouldn't have given in to his grief over the loss of his sister to where he would abandon his own son, sure he would be at his lowest for a minute but he would pull himself together and remember the promise he made to deb of how he would always be there for harrison no matter what and you can't sit there and convince me that a small town sheriff like his girlfriend angela would be able to bust a notorious killer like Dexter based on circumstantial evidence not to mention the tranquilizer formula is not the same; he never used kenimine on his targets he used M99, The writers should have continued adapting his story from the novels for they had tons of potential of doing and successfully pulling off a reverse breaking bad and the blacklist with the character, turning him into his very own sophisticated concierge of crime fighting with a vast network of resources at his disposal to help him hunt those that escape justice while keeping him 2 steps ahead of the people he works for in law enforcement who feels and views himself as the "the bad guy" that doesn't believe he can change but doesn't want to disappoint his father, his best friend angel, his wife, kids and sister by giving up trying with case after case and ultimate showdowns with the main antagonist of the season pushing him further and further down the path of being a honorable, righteous and semi-heroic individual with new blood being his swan song where he sacrifices himself to save his son, his son's girlfriend along with his own girlfriend from Kurt Caldwell, his son and the billionaire character they had in there that was serving as a red herring, have it where he had a connection to kurt and was involved somehow in covering up his secret of being the runaway killer and Dexter dying ending their threat once and for all thus earning his redemption which brings his story arc full circle with him ultimately breaking good, As for doakes the most annoying thing about him was his hypocritical attitude towards dexter when he tried to get him in trouble for just doing his job as a blood spatter specialist after he in an act of revenge shot dead a former death squad operative who was unarmed and tried to cover it up with lies which put his partner angel batista in a very uncomfortable situation of possibly turning him in to be arrested by IA until he was given a pass by the government, It should have been written and adapted according to the way it worked out in the books where they worked together to take down a cartel leader and doakes was severely maimed by the main antagonist dr danco to where he lost his legs and arms and tongue as a consequence for killing in cold blood that death squad operative who just so happened to be related to the villain, dexter tries to save him despite him knowing his secret but fails, he goes into a comma and dies later on in the 3rd season but Is revered as a hero cop and posthumously awarded a medal for risking his life to bring down dr danko who gets framed by Dexter as the Bay Harbor butcher, the same scenario can be applied but altered to the character Maria Laguerta, have the consequences of her actions in season 2 befall her in season 7 by having esme come back for revenge on laguerta for ruining her career by using her secret connections to the criminal underworld to frame her and make her look as if she's losing her mind like what laguerta did to her by sleeping with her boyfriend and have it where Debra is the one that tries to save her but fails with season 8 being the final season that deals with the fallout of that event and Dexter being the loving caring brother that he's been towards her trying to help her overcome the grief of laguerta's death all while dealing with the reign of terror from the brain surgeon, I say all of that to say that joe from the show YOU doesn't hold a candle to dexter and that dexter would have that despicable man for breakfast, lunch and dinner to feed the very jackels he came from! 🔥😁😉👍
Someone should do a what if video of dexter being trained to be an assassin modeled after both real life and fictional figures philosophical teachings of Miyamoto Musashi and bowen's old code from the movie DRAGONHEART with a little bit of THE SHADOW tossed in, I'm certain if he was put into the mindset of a black ops agent rather than a serial killer and was told from the start about his mother and brother, about what happened to them and why harry couldn't keep him along with dr. Vogal there to help him from the beginning with his repressed memories and emotions he would have viewed those psychopaths quite differently and his story would have went an entirely different route. Lol😎😁💯🔥👍🏻
How many people would all the seriel killers have killed if Dexter didn't kill them? Two wrongs don't make a right but Dexter and by extension Harry saved lives.
He’s Anti Spiral
I don't know what he is but as long as we're not murderers or r@pists. We Good and we looking the other way🚶🚶➡️
1 answer to both questions. Yes.
He’s an anti villian imo
Yes defs
Not really...the key difference between the two is the antihero is the one you're supposed to root for. Antivillain is the one you root against. There's...pretty much no scenarios where the viewer is being conditioned to hope Dexter loses. Thanos in Infinity War is more of an antivillain than Dexter... The better antivillain would be something like Light Yagami, but even he teeters between antihero and antivillain, since Death Note is notorious for its gray morality.
@@brendonw456 anti villain is a hero dude
@@brendonw456 the main reason I’m calling him an anti villian is because for 1 he breaks the code multiple times. The main code break that makes him cross the line of being an anti hero is when he kills the cop in new blood. That took him right into anti villain territory imo.
@@raymondsims7042 That's one incident across 15 years. He has a single moment that could be "antivillain" territory. And about 3000 that are all "antihero" territory. I also hated that moment immensely. Since it was...so incredibly out of character for Dexter. Like that just destroys all his chances of keeping his name clear in one fell swoop. Not something he'd do in a million years. So I also struggle to even identify this as a Dexter moment because it defies everything we know about the character.
Perhaps Brian was part of the Doctor and Harry's "intervention" (experiment) It seems strange that Harry would not have followed Brian in some fashion. Harry knew where to find bio dad when Dexter needed surgery, I am sure he knew where Brian was also. Perhaps a more twisted nurture verses nature experiment with the boys was Harry's greatest guilty secret.
great video
Negan's supreme confidence was unbelievable. I watched just to see what he would do next.
He carefully crafted the persona of " Don Draper ", he never made himself stand out and never made the same mistake twice.
Idk people don’t tend to change that much la Small deviations, but at the core Dexter would have always had this feeling of emptiness and the weird relization that the small things he does enjoy do exist. And from what we’ve seen it correlates to death. He enjoys killing animals, he even speaks his mind to harry in that clip you show. He thinks it’s a the first fun game he’s discovered. Later seasons he makes it a point that he doesn’t understand how people “ speak what’s on their mind “ ( somewhere in season 4 while arguing with Rita over the apartment ). He clearly at one point of his life was capable of speaking his mind with joy. And it’s when we are talking about murder. Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree you know. The story told us what Dexter would be in his brother. Love can’t fix someone that only feels when the blood is leaking from another being. Their love is anti life. Evil resides within their soul.
Couldn’t agree more!
He could have ised actual therapy and better techniques so its his fault but yeah there's also the fact if unchecked or improperly checked he would have been like the ice truck killer.
Yes. Imagine if Batman couldn't kill himself but instead collected orphans with psychology issues who would do what he couldn't. That's the Harry and Dexter relationship.
Yes, and the show hammers this several times. Literally every time Dexter has a "oh I didn't know that about myself" moment, is literally the show saying Harry was wrong. Instead of doing the difficult thing and getting young Dex the psychological treatment he needed, he decided to train him to be a perfect vigilante murderer to deal with the people he couldn't legally deal with. He was fine with everything until he saw the reality of what he created and then did the cowardly thing and ended his own life. Without a single word of warning or even taking Dexter with him. Harry, even in death, has the blood of every Dexter and Deb kill on his hands.
3:53 I will never understand this. What did you think was going to happen? If this was really not what you wanted why did you do everything you did? Also how is the prequel series going to address this?
Dexter clearly felt emotions. He felt love towards debra. Even harry saw them. But vogal refused to see the cpear signs and harry fefused to believe vogal could be wrong. They made dexter hismelf believe he was numb. But infact all he was, was emotionally unintellegent. The only one that clearly saw this was brother sam.
As far as I remember, Dexter directly tells us that he was a self-fulfilled prophecy of Vogel and Harry.
Harry didn’t love Dexter. At most he felt guilty that his abusive police tactics caused two boys to witnesss their mother being cut to pieces. However, for reasons that are never explained, he only chose to take one home with him. My assumption is that the older boy would be able to tell Harry's wife and others that he had seen him in Laura's bedroom. We know that cops had a tendency to not register informants which could provide them additional protections. Given that Harry would also sleep with his women informants, it's doubtful that he registered them to keep his coworkers from finding out how dirty he was and from keeping his wife from finding out he was cheating. Instead of getting Dexter proper care he chose to raise him as a version of himself, an abusuve cop who worked outside of the law. "Don't get caught" was probably the first law of Harry's code for a long time. Harry also had no respect for women which is why he neglected Debra and forced himself and Dexter to be the center of her world. She didn't even identify with her mother as much as she did with them as they treated her like a pet. I don't believe Harry wanted to kill himself just because he saw the results of his teachings but because of his entire life as a cop, husband, and father. But it was Dr. Viogel who pushed him over the edge. She thought Dexter was the perfect psychopath, and id Harry had admitted to him that he had been wrong then Dexter would start to question himself and maybe they would choose a different path. So in an off air conversation, she convinced Harry to take his own life. When she saw Debra's influence on him she showed her parts of that conversation hoping she would reach the same conclusion and kerp Dexter perfect. She did but decided to kill Dexter as well. Rather than the two figuring Vogel out for the monster she was and taking her out like a better show would have, those two dummies end up bickering and asking her for help. At least the writers had the decency to have her looked surprised that they would come to her.
Harry brought on the tragedy that Dexter and Brian suffered. It was Harry's insistence that Laura Moser get evidence that caused her death leading to The Ice Truck Killer and The Bay Harbor Butcher.
A huge plot hole that drives me crazy is the whole psychologist. If she was fine with him killing when he was younger why didnt he go to her for therapy? He had more issues and she coulve helped him even if it was just to help him with the code
One of the best TV Rivalries in history!
This is my interpretation of Dexter, though not stating anything objectively as I am not an expert, just interested. So this should be taken with a large grain of salt. I believe Dexter had either schizoid personality disorder and/or reactive attachment disorder. Like schizoids, he had little to no interest in any form of relationships, wanted to be left alone, no response to criticism or praise, emotional detachment (I believe his brain processed emotions but were not sent to the “drivers seat” if that makes sense), few interests and always solitary activities, little interest in sexual experiences with others (psychopaths are *usualy* sexually aggressive) His homicidal fantasies could be explained as schizoid fantasies and became homicidal because it was a theme he was taught. Reactive attachment could be aligned with the fact he was adopted right after experiencing extreme trauma. Adoption around that age especially with trauma can cause the child to fail to attach to their caregivers and consequently other people. Like schizoids they don’t care for relationships, tend to be emotionally detached, sometimes aggressive. I believe schizoid is the best fit, though I may be biased as I have schizoid myself and can almost completely relate to his thought patterns, decisions, interests/disinterests (aside from the homicidal fantasies and criminal behavior)
Exactly.
Ot didn't change zombie television as there was no zombie television prior to the walking dead . For this reason I am reporting this video as misleading
And just to be clear I pressed pause and didn't even watch the video
An animal can only be caged for so long.
i'm writing a zombie story myself, idk if it'll ever come to anything but i wish it becomes half as great as twd
You and half the world
i love twd and this video was pretty great :)
The walking dead IS the zombie television. Do you mean movies also? Anyways, im a zombie genera lover since i was a kid. i loved the WD but after a few years, it became lame shit.
Such a great video essay! You need more viewers!❤❤❤
Yesssss frrrrr
Honestly he prob should've have saved Dexter and given him proper care.
He thought he was"the one" lol but he was just a pawn. They all had their own purpose his just wasn't as great as he led to believe because the island healed his spine. Granted him a miracle so he thought he was special and he was right sorta he was chosen by so were so many others... his story came to abrupt end when he was sent off the island to die alone. Tragic indeed he was a possible candidate to become the new protector of the island. Unfortunately he was let down and never got to know the ending to the story. Like what happened after the oceanic 6 return to the island. Who reaply was jacob? He never got to know much answers to make profounding questions im sure he was asking in his head constantly. Oh well i feel he shouldnt have died or been killed but he was kinda flawed and extreme anyways
Good writing
as cool as the other villains are as threats to dexter, I've always loved the emotional conflict between Dexter and Isaak the most. I can imagine a scenario where the same interaction plays out, but at a time when Rita is still alive, not while Dexter is with Hannah. Imagine if Dexter learned through Isaak to embrace his love as an intrinsic strength, only to have it ripped away by Trinity later on.
I can't believe Doakes was black
Wait he was?
Was dexter harry fault? not really, why? brian literally turn out the same without harry sooner or later dexter will turn into a serial killer even if he dont brian will find dexter and you know whats gonna happen after he find dexter without harry's code? i'd say harry doing the right thing not for dexter but for miami he's an asshole for all i care i mean suicide? thats a bitch move but lets be real harry guiding dexter is the best outcome there is there's no better alternative than that
Brian was much older, had a far more lonesome life, with the knowledge of having a lost brother that he would probably never see again, while not being able to suppress the things that had happened to his mom. Dexter and Brian aren't the same at all, Brian did it bc he had nothing to lose, he just wanted to feel something atp. He was left abandoned, after some random dude just took his brother away from him, the one person that he could ever connect with. Harry is partially responsible for what happened to him too for taking away the one family Brian had left, and leaving him to an institution. That would drive literally any child insane, after what he had been through. Dexter on the other hand had a loving home, a loving baby sister, and a normal life in his hands, but it was taken away bc Harry wanted to use him as a super soldier. That's Harry's fault. He didn't have to do that to him, and if and when Brian were to find Dexter, he still wouldn't have changed his mind. He's not a psychopath, he cares, and loves for people, and if Dexter was actually treated with the right amount of love, and understanding, he wouldn't be in that position
In season 8 he had already shown to show genuine content with his life once everyone he knew and loved understood him. Hannah, Deb, Harrison. They all knew his dark secret... Not Harrison, but this allowed a barrier to be lifted. It took all this time, bc everyone that knew his secret either wanted to use him, or wanted to kill him, or dissociate with him. He was always alone throughout the entire series, so who's to say what would've happened if Harry handled Dexter's impulses differently? I understand why Harry did it this way, but this wasn't the only solution.
@@Loxymoxy If brian found dexter without harry code he will be ALOT worse, dexter is easy to corrupt i mean look how harrison turn out does he have harry's code when he was a kid? no so why you speculate dexter would be better if he doesnt have harry code??? and dexter literally accept brian offer but refuse because its DEB he even said does it have to be deb? he doesnt mind killing innocent with brian but DEB is off limit because one of harry's code is to protect DEB at all cost i mean did you see how charming brian was at season 1? dexter would be serial killer in 12 hours after meeting brian unlocking his trauma and his dark passanger in less than one day

very nice observation, i also think dokes challenged dexter view pn his codes very well while rape dudes, the religion guy and saxton were just some wacky terrible men who happens to fit dexter"s code
yeh i agree, i talked about doakes specifically in a previous video because of how complex of a character/villain he is.
why is will i am mentioned 💀💀💀

Ummmmmm...... Your adopted kid is displaying violent, psychotic behavior and instead of getting him help, you teach him to kill "bad" people......
