That old rotten ferry leaning on the larger ship is the "San Mateo". It was the only steam ship in the ferry fleet. It was propelled by a triple expansion steam engine. Our family rode it all the time when Our family lived on Vashon island. I miss the sound her engine made as it churned through the waters of Puget Sound. I still have family films of us sailing on her. Its too bad that it is just left to rot!
If you look closely on the Sidney's port side is the San Mateo ferry boat leaning against it that once sailed the waters of Puget Sound Washington state. It was very unique in that it was the only ferry in the fleet that was steam powered. It featured a triple expansion reciprocating steam engine. It also had a very musical whistle. Our family rode that ferry from Tahlequah Vashon island to the Point Defiance dock. I still remember the powerful throbs of its engine as it powered its way through the Puget sound. It is too bad that it was left to rot and I can see that it is decomposing very quickly. I even have home movies of our family sailing on the San Mateo. It was once a very famous ferry boat!

The san Mateo is the real tragedy, a piece of bay area history
Took my first steps as a toddler on that ship! Back in 1970, Rode on that vessel many times on my way to Pender Island! Fond memories! Also that’s when the food was good! My father used to say it was the best clam chowder! I remember all you can drink fountain drinks! lol Thanks for the video!
Oh and one more thing im a huge BC Ferries fan, i build lego models, movies, and artwork to inspire me. Im always trying to get up there as soon as possible riding along the BC Coast.
So sad, I remember when all ships from the 1960s sailed the strait of Georgia, but for this piece of history to be abondoned oh hell no, when im CEO of BC Ferries in the 2030s and 2040s I am going to buy that ship and clean it up and put it on display for the world to see.
I spoke to the owner today while asking for permission to shoot his site. No thanks to online shaming by local media, it was a hard sell. I did get my permissions and did a fantastic shoot. Perhaps using video and photos of such a place could be done a lot more responsibly, instead of screwing it for others. 'Neglectful owner'? None of your damn business how he runs his equipment. He isn't hurting anyone. Tsk, Tsk. Vive la Freedom of Expression.
He is on public property, so it is the public's business! They passed new federal laws pertaining to pollution, and are now involved with legal aspects!

I hate the owner for wrecking a beautiful piece of joy. It is so sad that we have to see this poor ship rust to pieces by the neglectful owner I hate him completely and I never want to see this thing rust to death I love boats so much
Lol, you know most of the boats got scrapped, at least this Sidney boat is still there today. This boat was also in need of an engine rebuild which, it was more economical to sell than to do that.
This happens fairly frequently. There's a dude down past Tacoma who has two. One on Anderson Island (The Ocean City) and another on Ketron Island (MV Olympic). Sorta sad but at the same time intriguing.
@@kingck101Main reason was because the state was intending to refurbish both the Rhody & Olympic, but Rhododendron’s rebuild went over the states budget, so they just quietly retired the Olympic.
Reading the comments, you guys think this ship is neglected? The S.S. Kyle that's stuck in Harbour Grace is in way worse shape then this. Although the Kyle is a old ship. This one looks more modern, so it's probably had a lot less time to rot.
My Dad worked on the Horseshoe Bay/Nanaimo run for 30 years until the early 90's. I'm pretty sure I spent some time on that ship as well. His regular boats were Queen of New Westminster, Queen of Coquitlam, and also the original Queen of Surrey. (The Swedish cruise ship that sank after it moved to the Prince Rupert run and re-named Queen of the North).
Not only the Ferry is leaching what about all the other vessels that are doing damage to the environment. Try to build a home close to a spawning stream. The owner should be seeing heavy fines for the damage he or she is doing to the river. What a disgrace. Nice coverage.
John Jahanshahi one of the conditions of selling the ferry was that it was to be either recycled or made into a static form. She is no longer in sailing form. Sorry...
why dont you buy it from his obvious scrap yard and fix it up,, do you have a half million to get it seaworthy and up to todays safety standards,, even to make a museum out of it would cost tons of money and the insurance to allow people to walk around on it would be outragous
I think what happens is the owner runs out of beer money and cuts and sell parts to stock the fridge! The ship next to the Sidney is the old steam ferry San Mateo www.evergreenfleet.com/mateo.html
Not so, the Tapp brothers have made money off this relic with several movie shoots, these guys know what their doing, as for the San Mateo, well, thats just sad to see... Cheers
The buyer was likely planning to cut it up for scrap but the price of scrap metal has plummeted with the drop in demand from China and the slower economy. The ship also likely contains asbestos and lead paint and other toxic chemicals. They would actually lose money scrapping her.
What a disgrace to see a ship like the Sidney turn to hell like that. She was still in operating condition until that guy bought her. I feel sorry for that ship, I really do
I drive down that stretch of Lougheed constantly (just outside of downtown Mission) and it's sad seeing her turn into a pile of rust. Did you use a drone to film this btw?
😭😭😭🚢

What a horrific choice of " music "

Gerald Tapp
Sounds like a funeral procession.
Fitting music then,...
The poor ship has been sitting there since 2008 right??? That’s 11 years ago
What a waste couldn’t have they scraped it or turned it into a youth hostel or a floating restaurant or floating hotel???
The queen of Sidney deserves better than to sit there rusting away

Me too I love bc ferries. I love learning about all the vessels. And I did lots of research.

The Queen is interesting, but what's the story on that smaller boat next to it, the one with the big hole in the side? Is it just an old barge?
It's an older smaller ferry, really old.
San Mateo
She will probably eventually down the road end up at the same place the Canadian Princess met her end.
Meh still looks like it can be saved
A lot of the inside has been scrapped and the engines need rebuilding. Not worth it.
overlandsquad.com/blog/2014/4/13/touring-the-queen-of-sidney
Thankfully it's moored in fresh water. If it was in salt water it would really be a rusted out hulk by now!
Look at more San Mateo :(
Lower Mainlands very own SS United States saga.
poor san mateo, that ship could have easily been converted to a event venue
I like the safety boat how to contact the owner?
My grandpa used to ride the Queen of Sidney i showed him this he got sad :(

That is the SS San Mateo. She was the last steam ferry to sail in the Puget Sound, ending her career in 1969, and was officially retired in 1971.

what makes you think the owner is neglectful ?
Not only the Ferry is leaching what about all the other vessels that are doing damage to the environment. Try to build a home close to a spawning stream. The owner should be seeing heavy fines for the damage he or she is doing to the river. What a disgrace. Nice coverage.
Agreed how does anyone get away with that in today's world?
The legal actions have started in the last few years.
if I was the owner I would just sail it around like a private boat and NOT let it get all rusty and Bleh
John Jahanshahi one of the conditions of selling the ferry was that it was to be either recycled or made into a static form. She is no longer in sailing form. Sorry...
You cant just do that, that whould make it rust more and damage vauleabe assets.
Know how expensive it is to sail around a ship for pleasure? As well as that, the engines needed rebuilding.
Well done
his boat he can do what he wants

100% correct
Yeah it would cost the same of building a new boat. Building a new boat is better because modern design.
That boat is ugly.

I researched and the engines were leaking oil and exhaust to the point it required the engineers to wear gas masks.

I spent a lot of time on that ship very sad to see her in such a state thanks for the video
