Short films and behind-the scenes from Paul Johnson, making animation since 1995.
Film 12 - People Are Like Oranges (2024)
WARNING: several shots contain flashing lights.
Paul Johnson's 12th musical short film in 12 years takes Wayne Dyer's observation that "People are like oranges, what's inside of us is what comes out", and turns it into an animated expression of motion and creativity. 50 sketchbook designs are turned into animated cycles of running, walking, hopping, dancing, spinning, and jumping to propel the idea forward that we are to others how we are to ourselves, so we're best off cultivating positive feelings in order to live calm and peaceful lives.
Programs used: TV Paint, Filmora Pro, Flash 8, FL Studio, Graphics Gale.
Produced independently over 7 months with a zero dollar 325-hour budget, this 2d digitally hand-drawn film was animated in TV Paint, and composed, edited, and sung, by 30-year animation pro Paul Johnson, available for guest speaking and teaching roles.

2d cycle time lapse #50 - HOW TO ANIMATE SURREAL CARTOONY MOTION!
Alright, cycle #50 from my next short film, the final cycle I need for my 12th animated short film. I let myself coast on this one, took a full 3 hours, and didn't avoid being drawn into a corner for drawings 10 and 11. I've escaped enough creative jams on the previous 49 cycles that I was confident I could get out of this one, and the results speak for themselves. Really enjoyed this process (...
2d cycle time lapse #49 - ANIMATION 3 hour MARATHON!
Alright, cycle #49 from my next short film, stretching my capabilities here and pushing for as much mental gymnastics as possible. Drawing straight to clean in a 12-drawing cycle that is flippable to become a 24-frame cycle, visualizing the arcs, spacing, layering, volumes, and timing needed to ensure smooth motion, all while planning the silhouette and layering between different body parts. Br...
2d cycle time lapse #48 - DOUBLE SMOOTH BOTH SIDES DANCE!
Alright, cycle #48 from my next short film, suddenly only two left to go so I'm making these ones count. I was able to add an extra layer of complexity and flip the cycle to get double the content, without too much extra work needed. Don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, digital animation makes this so much easier compared to back in the day. Soon to get down to the new film in earnest....
2d cycle time lapse #47 - DOUBLE DUTY DANCE CYCLE!
Alright, cycle #47 from my next short film, I decided to try and get 2 seconds out of a 1-second cycle and it worked pretty well. The key was to have the first drawing completely symmetrical, allowing the cycle to be flipped on the 13th drawing, in effect making this a 24-drawing cycle with variations to the left and right. The process continues to evolve. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawing...
2d cycle time lapse #46 - TAZMANIAN DEVIL-STYLE SPIN!
Alright, cycle #46 from my next short film, decided to go in a different direction here and it worked better than I anticipated. I was thinking 12 drawings might be too little to sell the beginning, middle, and end here but it seems to work pretty well, despite the relative roughness of the approach. My fastest one yet I think in under 90 minutes. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's,...
2d cycle time lapse #45 - SMEARS!
Alright, cycle #45 from my next short film, I decided to go all in on the smears here and zip between 4 different poses. I ended up putting the fast drawings on 1's and holding the keys on 4's, ideally I would add an extra drawing settling in or easing out from each but it is what it is, 2 hour time limit and all. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's, 1 second looped. CREDITS: 45 down...
2d cycle time lapse #44 - JUMPY BAT-CROCODILE!
Alright, cycle #44 from my next short film, focusing more on structure in this cycle for predictability and time management but lost a little bit of the extremes and flow as a result, good lesson in workflow for me. Liking how the offset feet and tail/arms overlap worked out, especially that screen left arm, that's my bread and butter these days. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's, ...
2d cycle time lapse #43 - TALL BIRD JOYOUS JUMP!
Alright, cycle #43 from my next short film, keeping things vertical but with more pencil milage requirements than I initially considered. From the complex silhouette to the number of feathers to the layering, this one took 2 hours 45 of concerted effort, ultimately turned out pretty close to what I anticipated. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's, 1 second looped. CREDITS: 43 down 14...
2d cycle time lapse #42 - SWIMMY SEA CREATURE w/SMEARS!
Alright, cycle #42 from my next short film, my 2nd one to beat my 2 hour time limit. Relatively simple design meant less line mileage and more time for appeal, smears, and bubbles at the end. Nice to have two water-based cycles in the film so that the first one doesn't get lonely. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's, 1 second looped. CREDITS: 42 down 15 to go Drawn straight ahead in ...
2d cycle time lapse #41 - SQUISHY CIRCULAR DANCE!
Alright, cycle #41 from my next short film, got some nice tight tweens here to contrast with the broad actions and subtle smears. It went in a different direction than I planned but ended up in a nice circular motion with the SR hand reversing with appeal and drag, tail moving evenly and smoothly, and the other hands and feet keeping weight and moving cleanly. Overall very successful, not too m...
2d cycle time lapse #40 - STRAIGHT AHEAD SURPRISE!
Alright, cycle #40 from my next short film, I went in pretty open to whatever would happen creatively, and emerged with some good, functional ideas, taking advantage of upper and screen right real estate. Hands may have been overly complex but overall arcs and overlap/reversals were working, I'm not getting faster but the ideas are getting more complex in the same amount of time. Thanks for che...
2d cycle time lapse #39 - SWIMMING and BUBBLES!
Alright, cycle #39 from my next short film, my first of two swimming cycles. Started out slow as I got a feel for it, but fell into 10 minutes per drawing once the first three were worked out for arcs, angles, and spacing. Watch for the special bonus section with the bubbles at the end! Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's, 1 second looped. CREDITS: 39 down 31 to go Drawn straight ahe...
2d cycle time lapse #38 - STRAIGHTFORWARD WALK... with a TWIST!
Alright, cycle #38 from my next short film, I was determined to keep my approach simple, which I did for the most part, with the exception of the fur on the elbows/knees and body silhouette! Still ended up with some nice relative complexity on the arms and head, I feel like I'm starting to get this process. Thanks for checking it out! 12 drawings on 2's, 1 second looped. CREDITS: 38 down 32 to ...
2d cycle time lapse #37 - ASYMMETRICAL RUN with HEAD SMEAR!
2024-07-16 Alright, cycle #37 from my next short film, not exactly what I was initially planning but that's the joys of going straight to clean, you never quite know what you're going to get! Heel strike turned out to be on drawings 8 and 11, which means that the feet are doing more of a gallop than a run, but it's supported with the single circular body motion that accounts for both steps happ...

Shinji Kimura is a legendary background painter. He was in charge for the backgrounds of Satoshi Kon's movies and also did the art in Katsuhiro Otomo's movie " Steam Boy ". One of the best anime artist ever.
Your best one yet! & yes, everyone has a navel
Yea
O MY GOD, I'm blown away. this is fantastic! Lovely color scheme, "people are like-" comig up in unexpected times, a psychodelic visual treat tha fills you with a child like wonder absolute simplistic perfection
Thanks! 325 hours of evenings and weekends over the past 7 months, helps balance out the thousands of hours spent on studio work :D
Another banger! Awesome work
Thanks much Nick! I have to catch up on your shorts now.
Awesome Paul! I love it.
Thanks Alfredo! Appreciate you checking it out.
THIS IS SOSOSOSO COOL I LOVE MEGA MAN FULLY CHARGED! I’m actually planning on recreating my own characters as pixel sprites and watching this to get a good idea of what to do! Also LOVE the analysis of the character designs with the shapes and details!
Thanks so much! I had a blast working on that show.
People usually only associate Miyazaki with Studio Ghibli, but Takahata was also an incredible animation director.
Incrediblely interesting ! Animated special effects are so underated despite the magic they bring to the films. It's a facinating job made by amazing artists. Thank you for posting !
Thanks for watching! Hard to believe that was almost 30 years ago already.
Thank you for such line test analysis so dope! Thx for adding storyboard to the work man
Standing on the shoulders of giants, I appreciate when studios let the pre-production see the light of day.
I have met Edward David who worked on this when he was a young man ! Salut Edward!
This is a nice animation! Thank you for the video upload!
This could be called “Krazy kart”
The quality of the e conte ( storyboard ) comes from Miyazaki Hayao beeing first an animator. That's why his movies are so action driven and why he can depict the feeling he needs in the scene so accurately. Don't forget he had been mentored by the amazing Ôtsuka Yasuo, one of the best japanese animator ever, who, by the way, animated the cars in this movie.
This is fantastic and I'd love to see more!!
The amazing skills of hand-drawn animation will be stolen by AI and CG creators in the future.
Never thought about the work and creativity put into some of these shots. Really like this series you have here.
I watched this film when it came out. I was a 7th grader in Tokyo, Japan. Hayao Miyazaki and Yasuo Ohtsuka were big heroes for an anime fan like me (there was no term "anime-otaku" at that time).
well done
Where Can I Download The Original Sprites, Models And Assets From I Need Them To Make A Fanmade Second Season Since The Show Just Had One Single Season
Great idea! You'd have to remake them in Flash since they're owned by Disney, but maybe they'll share the Flash assets one day, if enough fans ask for it.
@@8bit_paul Ok, I'm Gonna To See How Many Fans I Can Find
Do you still have those storyboards used in this video?
Thanks for watching! As far as I know they're still posted online somewhere, I don't have any rights to them myself. Nickelodeon sometimes includes these in their DVD releases, I think that's how these usually get out into the public eye.
Wonderful animation!
Thank you! I'm grateful I get to share it.
I've come a long way in 6 years, great to revisit this.
youtube doesn't deserve this vid.
Very kind, thank you!
Ohhh myyyy Fuuu-adddd!
Thanks for the comment! Translation to English: "oh! I guess some foreigners have finally realized how good this movie is. Hayao Miyazaki's memorable debut work When Spielberg saw the car chase in this movie, he said, ``I don't have the confidence to surpass this movie, so I won't make it.'' A work full of romance by Hayao Miyazaki I lined up the day before the release and saw it three times on the day. Brochures are kept neatly When I die, I'll be cremated with you (I won't give it to anyone) If you haven't seen this movie, don't tell me you like Hayao Miyazaki."
Fun, I like how round and scoopy the leg motion is. 😊
Much appreciated! I'm lucky I get to do this for fun and for a living.
No roughs, under 2 hours and buttery smooth. Youre just different 🤌🏿🤌🏿
Thanks! Yeah, I've been weird ever since I was a kid, I've decided to just embrace it :D
In the true spirit of Krazy Kat and the gang. Wonderful. Simply wonderful.
Thanks so much! It was difficult choosing which strip to animate with so many great choices from over 100 years ago.
Oh wow 😲 that's so smooth, dude !
Thanks! I suspect by the time I get to #70 I'll be looking back at this one thinking "Ahh, I could've done better" :D But that's how we constantly improve.
How does this only have 500 views?? A professor showed my class this when I was in college and I was blown away! It even inspired me to make my own version for an assignment!
Thank you so much! I'm grateful to be able to do this for a living.
This is incredible, thank you so much!!
My pleasure! I'm lucky I get to animate for a living.
As a Japanese person. I appreciate you to make us appreciate even more of Hayao Miyazaki’s work❤
Thank you so much for watching!
I can't find the comic this animation was based on.
Sometimes called Krazy Kat. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krazy_Kat
I was lucky to find and old Krazy Kat book in my Grandpa's basement.:-)
What can I say I am quite the animated character.
When is part 3 coming out?
Ahh, those are the only two Maggie episodes I animated on! But I have other breakdowns here, thanks for checking it out :) th-cam.com/play/PLfI3qrmj07WraL6ZxhBNerVUwE-IA_ofn.html
This is really awesome! Would you ever consider looking at another Lupin film like Mystery of Mamo?
I did my 100 episodes, might revisit more at some point though. Thanks for checking it out! th-cam.com/play/PLfI3qrmj07WraL6ZxhBNerVUwE-IA_ofn.html
this is better than year at animation school
This is adorable
Thanks very much! The old comic strip is terrific.
I assume you also worked on the sprite animation is Sonic Prime right?
Thanks for watching! I've done pixel art for several of my own projects, this was my first professional one though, usually I work in 3d and mocap these days.
This sure brings back memories! Great comments, Paul! My favourite inbetween/cleanup was working on the karate deer in slow mo' (animated in 3's) with Paul Boyd's wonderful guidance!
Ahhh yes indeed, I learned so much from Paul Boyd, I couldn't have had a luckier start to my career. Thanks for checking it out :D
I've been looking into a lot about this show as of late and I really appreciate seeing a breakdown of some of the work you did here! It's interesting seeing the show and its assets in their proper form and learning little things that went into the animation here. That sort of glitchy jitter you did with Pupert as his heart breaks was quite clever and a fun effect for its time. Also, now that you've mentioned it, that face you made out of the mud is now my favorite character in the show.
So much fun, congrats!!!!
Much appreciated!
that was interesting combination of game graphic animation, i suppose
Thanks Diego!
Incredible stuff Paul! Your weirdest and wackiest one yet, I love it.
Ahhh thanks much Christian! Yeah, this might be my favorite one so far, I was putting in 20 hours a week on it without having to force anything, nice when it all flows.
