The video is older but can you tell me where I can get the glider from Videotime 0:44? Thank you very much
This video is AWESOME! Thank you!!
Excellent, just what I needed to know. I've been flying FS2020 and with new aircrafts released, naturally no performance profile included. So there's a few I need to create myself, thx !
Hi. Great video. Thanks for your tips. A question... what should I activate in Ortho4Xp in orther to see downloaded history squares on the map? Thanks
I only have 2 plugins, PluginAdmin Type:(plugin) and XLua 1.0.0r1 Type:Aircraft Plugin And no matter enabled or not,one or another, trying different planes to start the tow, there is stoll only a towing wire going to some strange direction, not towards the end of the runway and no aircraft in sight
Its been some time but that sounds like you maybe connecting to a nearby player aircraft. That can happen if you're in multiplayer.
One of the most useful videos I have watched on TH-cam. Thank you so much.
Hi Chris , why my glider goes backwards?thanks
I need a little more information than "goes backwards" before I can answer that Marcos. But here's a few possible reasons... launch runway is uphill high windspeed tow plane is behind glider
@@chrisevans-nodd thank you I ‘ m new with the gliders! I will try to be more accurate with the questions! but today I have completed a flight with the ask 21 !thank you
Thank you ! For this tutorial 😊
You are welcome Marcos.
Come on Nodd. Go and do some gliding in X-Plane 12 and tell us about it. The atmosphere is supposed to have thermals now.
I'm actually doing my soaring over on MS Flight Simulator, have posted a few videos about that, although nothing all that recent. Yeah I noticed X-Plane 12 came out but I've not had a proper go with that yet.
Oops wrong channel.
What is the x-system software you have? I have x-plane 11 and never seen it!
This video was made using X-Plane 11. I also used Little Navmap on a second monitor to show the glider's location while I fly. Some other mods I often use but didn't in this video would be X-Winch, Towplane-X & Therm-X.
💪 𝕡𝕣𝕠𝕞𝕠𝕤𝕞
Love it! Thanks for making this!
Hello! How to visualation the thermals ?(green - red)
Hello Been. To turn on thermal visualization hit Ctrl M a few times until you see "Thermals & Microbursts". I explain how to do this in the video here... th-cam.com/video/B8p9N6L6Zno/w-d-xo.html
Hi how have you done it? I am trying t o get it to work with my friend
:DDD nazdar
I swear, if I ever see that Discus-2b in your simulator again, I will hunt you down lol 😆
She's an oldie but goodie? Yeah I figured I'd test all the gliders I had installed just to see if any of them behaved differently. Might be time to retire the 2b :-)
The essence of the unfavorable screening: the difference in resistance on the left and right consoles, and it should not necessarily occur with the deviation of the alerons. The difference in consoles can occur for two reasons: the difference in speeds and/or the difference in resistance. The difference in speeds occurs with a very small radius of the turn with small roll, especially in small speeds. The difference in resistance occurs in the absence of a differentiated angle of deviation of alerons. All aircraft designers laid a differentiated deviation in the glider, for example, up -20 and down +15. This eliminates the occurrence of unfavorable scouring. Small speed, a small radius of a turn with a small roll, a sharp and large deviation of the alerons - get an unfavorable scouring! If you fly at speed more cruising and smoothly work with alerons - do not worry about unfavorable scouring! In the MSFS2020, the size of an unfavorable lean is easily tuned in the flight model of any glider.
Thank you. I knew about aileron differential (up 20, down 15) but you are correct. There is also coordinated turns which is something a bit different.
Thanks for sharing ...
To avoid confusion, I believe you miss-spoke when you referred to sim 'Cumulus 2', I'm sure you meant 'Condor 2'. Nice video. Roll on the introduction of a fully dynamic atmospheric model in MSFS along 'Condor 2' lines. Dynamic meteorically conditions would be greats as well, e.g. sea breeze fronts, transitions between cold & warm fronts including changes in wind speed & direction, inversions, dew points and lapse rates. If a dynamic model was built you could feed it with current live data or historical data for chosen dates and times for your current location, (the data must be archived somewhere).
You are correct, I meant to reference Condor. I often get that mixed up with Cumulus, an addon for FSX.
Very interesting tutorial, thank you. I have a problem with Iceland, all my tiles are flat and I am looking for a tutorial for that particular country. Could you help me to find something that could help me? Thanks
Nice job - don't approach 02 at that angle in real life please! :-)
Indeed
Do you mean approach 2 in the video or from the approach challenge in MSFS?
@@pure4wood501 not sure exactly what you mean; the comment was just on the approach which looked quite flat. 02 is used infrequently because the prevailing conditions favour 20 and 24, so when it is used it’s because a headwind and thus there’d be significant “waterfall” down the escapement (lots of sink).
He is talking about my rather flat & dangerous approach to runway 02 at Sutton Bank.
Nice job Nodd. You need the downwind checks WUFSTALL: Water, Undercarriage, Flaps, Speed, Trim, Airbrakes, Lookout, Landing. The scenery for those airports is amazing.
That's good advise Ian, thank you. I'm usually pretty good with my checks but recording a video & beginning the flight already in the air not knowing where I was threw me for a loop. But those are excuses, lame ones at that. <grin>
how is fs2020 for soaring? its probably my fave kind of flying maybe tying with bushplanes is there thermal or wave lift somulation? and a working vario?
Gliding in MS Flight Simulator will be officially supported later this year (2022) so at the time I made this video, we're using third party gliders which are fully functional & really nicely modeled. You mentioned varios... most of the newer gliders available have proper compensated variometers that work as they should. The also feature a glide computer for task flying. What we're waiting on is proper gliding weather in the sim which we're hoping will be added soon. Ridge-lift is already fairly well modeled but thermals are "tuned down" for now & there's no wave simulation either. However there is an addon called Thermal Assistant that injects thermals into the sim among other things like adding winch & aerotow capabilities. Considering gliding is not officially supported yet, gliding in MSFS is actually really quite good already. And... bush plane flying is second to none, I enjoy doing that also.
@@chrisevans-nodd well atleast its coming, with thermals that actually align with the clouds or something this sim woulld be incredible for soaring
@@lucywucyyy It has a lot of potential that's for sure.
Hey Chris, really looking forward to soaring gliders again with y’all as soon as my wife and i are done moving into our new home here in Clemmons North Carolina, including getting my PC and flightsim gear back up and running in MSFS 2020 after several months on-and-off of driving 1400 miles back & forth between Rhinebeck New York and Clemmons. Anyway, can’t wait! .. By the way, beautiful glider and awesome scenery in MSFS.
Congrats on the new home. Yes come join us when you get setup.
Thanks, old boy. Would you PM me the link to the gg visibility addon you mentoned. Not sure about that 23S spelling. ; }

What's up David?
good vid Chris . I haven't had the problem as i always fly on hard mode/realistic. I can see how this would effect the flight model for sure
Thank you Peter. Yes hoping this will make things a little easier on the glider devs.
Thanks man! Disabled global traffic plugin and voila! Tow plane again.
Thanks for your videos Chris, they're informative and entertaining, much appreciated! I've joined the X-Plane Glider Facebook group and am looking forward to trying some tasks etc. You've been a great help while I find my way into this hobby.
Make a connector bellow the airlock and but those big sealed cargo doors and close them to the station
but how to make it airtight in the corners? in my opinion, no airlocks as "vanilla part" is a weakness in the game...
thanks!1!11!
Did you use V-Trees mod for the trees?
I believe I was running a few forest mods when I recorded this. I don't recall which exactly but V-Trees was not one of them.
Nice video Chris. It's been a while since I flew gliding competitions, so I am not sure how things have changed in the modern era. I flew pre-GPS, and all navigation was done with a map and compass. Turning points on a task would be a notable feature on the ground, rather than a GPS coordinate, and pilots would have to photograph that feature to prove that they had gone around it. This was also pre-digital cameras, so at the end of the day, there was quite a lot of work to get everyone's films developed. I assume that with data logging devices on board most aircraft now, it's just a simple task of downloading data tp prove that a task has been completed successfully. Anyway, your videos have inspired me to try a few glider flights in X Plane if only to prove myself that my old gliding skills are still there.
Thanks Chris, well done this is awesome. Also thanks to Steve Jones I have been looking for that. Stay safe everyone!
Great video and still relevant today! X-Plane 11.52. Cheers
Thanks Kevin. Agreed, not sure I'd change all that much if I made an updated version.
Logging is not "pretty cool", it's appalling
I agree what's going on it the major rain forests & other areas of the World is "appalling" but that's not what's going on here in British Colombia. Forestry there is properly managed & is considered a sustainable resource. There are strict quotas & areas that are harvested are allowed to regrow so they can be harvested again in the future. Basically they're in the business of growing forests which is what the planet needs right now.
@@chrisevans-nodd Nice
Approach must be much higher with gliders! Stay high, base leg at about 900 ft from airfield and then use your speedbrake to go down and when you are low, wery low, make the flare and let the aircraft stall. Simpilots almost always start final too low. If you use this bad abit in real life you will die soon. 😉
Yeah no doubt but misjudged how far I was from the airfield so not many options other than to go climb one of the nearby ridges. But I was making a video & it was already getting way too long.
Thanks for sharing. Where is the yaw string?
This was an early attempt at gliding in MSFS. The glider model I used in this video was pretty basic & also missing its canopy. We have much better gliders now with complete instrumentation, including a yaw-string..
I recently saw a video of either a CP Air or Pacific Western 737-200 landing and departing again from the grass strip at Hope. They were experimenting with it and while it worked, I don’t think it was ever repeated.
Yes I heard something about that. Some kind of grass-strip certification or test or something? I can totally see why they would have chosen this airfield as its not only fairly long it's really wide too. But I suspect once they got their data, there was no need to continue operating from there. Besides I understand the landing fees were fairly substantial as it cost a small fortune to get the ruts out of the grass when they were done. :-)
Wow that view of MSFS really comforts gliding.
hey this is weird... for me ctrl m is not doing anything? also when trying to bind that function to a key, it does not show up in the search results...
Ah just responded to your first video on this topic not realizing this one was there too and the ambient sink being an official term... which was fixed hehe. To make my question more specific, can you tell me where I can find the latest advice on getting the best thermallingexperience in xp and where I can contribute ideas?
I posted those two videos several years ago, yes the sink issue was resolved some time ago. While there have been some improvements to thermalling in X-Plane thermals are still somewhat of an afterthought. We've spoken to Laminar many times about improving X-Plane's thermals & they did make some great changes, like having the thermals roll & pitch the glider but fundamentally X-Plane's thermals are just random entities. The main issue is thermals are not integrated into X-Plane's weather system. Instead they're just three sliders you can adjust when using custom weather which then randomly positions thermals across the local map. Our Therm-X addon (Google "X-Plane Therm-X") helps with this by reading the current weather conditions & adjusts the thermals accordingly. That's a step in the right direction but the holy grail would be to position thermals underneath cumulus clouds. This would allow pilots to predict where thermals are instead of flying blind & hoping you randomly stumble upon a thermal like it is now. While ridge-soaring is really quite good in X-Plane, thermaling still has a ways to come. Austin has hinted that he'd like to make further improvements to thermals in X-Plane but suggested that would be a project for the future, possibly X-Plane 12? Google is probably your best bet for finding information on gliding in X-Plane. But here's a couple of good options... forums.x-plane.org/index.php?/forums/forum/482-gliding-in-x-plane/ facebook.com/groups/416567982493369
Hi Chris nice video. Am trying to get a realistic thermalling experience and got to your videos. This is very unrealistic behaviour indeed. Thermals also seem to originate completely randomized instead of being influenced by terrain. Do you have some advice for me to get the most realistic experience with the recent state of the sim?
every time i exit the slew mode the force is so high the plane breaks and the screen goes black
That is a bit weird, you could disable crash detection & aircraft damage but there's a much better option now Vs using the slew mode... Go get yourself a copy of Kinetic Assistant... msfs.touching.cloud/mods/kinetic-assistant/
@@chrisevans-nodd yes I have that and its a great addition to msfs for soaring. Not tried the aerotows yet :)
No thermals? What's the point?
While agree thermals are something we do need & should be coming to MSFS soon, there's more to gliding than just thermals. Ridge-soaring is modeled quite nicely for example. Depending on the terrain & wind, its possible to glide cross-country for hundreds of miles in MSFS. We also have an addon called Kinetic Assistant that adds winch launches & aerotowing plus... it allows us to place thermals in the sim. Granted they're somewhat simplistic at the time I'm writing this but the dev is working on that. So we do actually have thermals now & I fully expect MS/Asobo will be adding native thermals to the sim later this year (2021-2022).
Where to get / find a glider at the simulator ?
We're working on a brand new Discus 2b but for now you should try the DG808S... msfs.touching.cloud/mods/ms-dg-808s You should also get the Kinetic Assistant addon... msfs.touching.cloud/mods/kinetic-assistant
do they simulate thermals (and in a realistic manner)...
There are no official thermals in MSFS at the time I'm writing this but Asobo is working on adding "gliding" to the sim. Right now we do have the following addon which will allow you to inject basic thermals into the sim... secure.simmarket.com/touching-cloud-msfs-cloud-assistant.phtml
Thanks. I thought it might be something to do with Traffic Global, and that's exactly what it was. Thanks.
Glad this helped.
V1.03 or V1.30. I presume it was slip of the tongue... Lessons learned to make my scenery better using the latest version.
At my age I find my tongue tends to get quite slippery.
or if you have FSX installed go to Touching Cloud mods, (search) and he has a copy of the tool and a package all ready for the DG 800S complete with vario, gauges (stock) and hidden jet engine with limited fuel for take off. It is a downloadable executable. It flys smoothly and models turbulence excellently
