East Highland Way Final Day

Final day on the East Highland Way , heading to Aviemore. (please bare with the indoor video weirdness - it gets better once outside) This day was mostly through forest and shrubbery and my least favourite but still had some wonderful highlights. I share a bit more on my stay at Forces Manor which was generally unclean with tools laying around including in the kitchen! Since my visit I have not...

Newtonmore to Kincraig. Bare with the first part in the hostel, the weird lighting effect sorts itself out once I am outdoors. If anyone knows why this happened please drop a comment below. I got lost trying to get onto the trail at the start of this day. I was tired but it was a very enjoyable walk. My accommodation for the night was Forces Mannor which I absolutely do not recommend, but more ...
East Highland Way - DAY 4
มุมมอง 3785 หลายเดือนก่อน
With a heart still full of extreme gratitude thanks to my amazing hosts at Laggan Hotel it was onwards towards Newtonmore Youth Hostel. This was a brilliant stay as well with the hostel very much geared towards hikers. Along the way I enjoyed finding the bothy. Things got a bit sketchy from there and with various river crossings, boggy ground and doubting my navigation skills. Thanks to all who...

Day Three on The Easy Highland Way It got emotional. Deep down I was ready to quit. Fersit to Laggan I am not sure why the video quality seems a little different on this one. Maybe I was trying to rush at points so filming wasn't as smooth. Either way I hope you enjoy. I think a return to Laggan and the little beach is needed. Day two on the East highland Way and the start of it all beginning to go wrong. Opposite BunRoy campsite to just after Fersit. Note: This is not my best edit. For some reason my transitions didn't take but I was not going through the upload process again as did not realise until this was fully uploaded. Anyway join me for day three soon and find out why I wanted to quit. GEAR I USED & RECOMEND ...

A circular walk in the Ochil Hills. This is a 6 hour trail taking in the summits of Innerdownie, Whitewisp, Tarmangie and Ben Shee. This walk got a little extreme. Will the hail and wind cause me to abandon the hike? Was so much fun! Thank you so much for arranging this walk!
@ShanOutdoors definitely worth the drive. I'm so glad you were happy to go do this one x
@@WanderFreeWithBarb It was my favorite part of the trip hands down. What a fun hike.
That looked fantastic, great video and channel going good. Just subscribed from a fellow TH-camr 😉👍
Hey thanks so much really appreciate the watch, follow and kind comment , Still new at all this. Gave you a follow back :)
Could you name were you stayed. ??
Lovely cafe in Laggan and a nice bothy on the moore camp outside.
@johnmccarron yeah looked like there was a few spots that would have been great. I loved the bothy
Farsit is not private land, its an estate I have camped all round that area plenty times, no crops, no livestock just odd sheep lose and houses with dogs. Do what you have got to do, all you can say leave no trace, I have enjoyed so far.
Should have camped in the scout land...although there is a place just further on near the river.
@@johnmccarron yeah definitely think I would next time, it would have been so much better
Looks like you had a grand day's walk. Happy trails.
@tchaeuk thanks for watching. We definitely lucked out on the weather this day which made for an amazing hike.
Great piece. I really like to experience the changing light just before sunset or just before dawn. So thanks you.
@@tchaeuk thanks for watching. I feel so lucky walks like this are local.
sounded like you both enjoyed the hike. Hidden Valley is on my to do list. ATB Martin
It is definitely worth a drive to get to it. Hope you manage to go soon :)
Walked the WHW last year. Nice Vid. Thx for sharing.
The WHW is a trail that steals your heart. Do you think you will walk it again?
@@WanderFreeWithBarb I hope to walk it once again. But this year I walked the Rob Roy Way. :)
@@Buszkraftowski Nice one!
Rab’s rain jackets do seem kind of fast fashion. Not designed to last more than a season.
Think we need new designers to step up. Time for rain jackets to last and be more than just shower proof.
A fav section too, as the views open up, with inviting Mtns. A chilled wander
Thanks for watching. If I only have a few days to walk along the WHW then this is where I would begin my hike.
Super helpful review. It’s anxiety-inducing sometimes when you drop a decent amount on gear. This is my fear, that it will not perform as advertised. Their response was ridiculous. Sorry this happened to you. :-(
@@ShanOutdoors definitely think the response is what I was most annoyed at.
Ultralight and durable are not two words that go together I'm afraid Barb. I'm replacing some ultralight items with more heavy duty stuff because I'm fed up with them failing on thru-walks. Maybe try reaching out to the place you bought it from as they might be able to help 👍🍺
@snowymatrix I was so excited getting this item as well. Hope you find gear you love and works well.
Think you’d expect more than a couple if weeks out of it.
@@davidcampbell4647 Exactly! In fairness it is still wearable but definitely should not have shown those signs of wear. Shame as I love my other gear from Rab
How disappointing Barb, both with the jacket and Rabs response. ATB Martin
Definitely, I think the very least they could have offered for the patch and panel for free. I hate giving a negative review but felt this was important. The original downpour jacket seems to be a lot better from reviews I've seen. Right now just using this jacket for occasional general use and would have to think again for on trail.
Loved this. You were so lucky to have such beautiful weather! 😀
If anything it was a little too hot, definitely want to go back at some point.
There's nothing worse than crossing paths with some loose cows when you're on a pleasant walk in the countryside.
It took everything in my entire being not just to bolt and give it a fast moving target to chase lol
Look forward to seeing did my A level field placement there back in the 80s
Oh wow, that is amazing! It's such a beautiful place
Yes a beautiful place with fond memories. Me & my best mate Ian. He studing the geography and me welks. Thanks for sharing Barb.
Nice one Barb im going to watch this later on tonight! 👍🍺😎
Hope you enjoy :)
Vetu well done. Thr videos have given me more confidence to tackle it over the next few months, especially knowing the Hiiker app works. Looking foward to many more videos from you. ❤
Best of luck Andrew and thank you. It's a fab trail overall. I am honestly surprise dhow much I ended up relying on the Hiiker app but it was just so handy especially the distance marker.
Well done. So proud of you! You really showed the authenticity and transparency that many are afraid to show. It’s important, I think. Your series made me heartsick for Scotland. 🏴 💕
@ShanOutdoors thanks Shan, definitely missed you this trip. Still can't get over how bad that last accommodation was. Even the dog did the toilet indoors at one point. Definitely a life changing trip though. I still can't decide what's next this year, if anything lol.
Well done for pushing yourself out your confort zone and taking on a tougher trail than the "holiday route" of the WHW! I've done that trail 4 times so understand its many drinking and eating opportunities! I also want to echo the thoughts of smoggie/Martin that this is your story so don't stress about filming a travel video production with lots of information. I hope you've learned some lessons on this trail which you will use on future thru-walks atb and thanks for sharing an honest and genuine account of your walk👍🍺😎
Biggest take away has to be remembering to be thankful. Possibly a sleeping bag liner depending on season/location
You're showing genuine emotions on trail which is very brave. I don't subscribe or watch many other walking channels because I find them all annoying with their constant fake happy trails bs which tells me they are not real long distance walkers/backpackers because no one is happy or enjoys every mile of any trail. Years ago I used to go snowboarding in the Cairngorms in May so it can get quite cold up there in April!
I honestly don't think I could be all smiles the whole way if it wasn't how I was feeling. Really appreciate the positive feedback on this. Despite it being cold I was glad the weather was otherwise kind to me. I would love to do a proper snow camp one time but definitely would need to upgrade some gear.
Nice one, don't stress about finding a wild camping spot nature will always provide a place especially in Scotland. Personally i would have pitched up at that scout campsite and if anybody came by i would have said i tired to call but had no signal! I'm going to watch the rest of your adventure as i liked to way you filmed it and the cool accent 👍😎
Hey, thanks so much. Yeah on reflection I should have. No one probably would have even came by.
What stunning views on this day! Makes my heart ache for Scotland 🏴
Soon! Not hard to find stunning views here to be fair.
I've watched several videos on the EHW. I will be doing it august/September and this is the best and most informative so many thanks and looking foward to watching the rest. Andy._
Thanks so much Andrew. I hope you have an amazing time on your walk when it comes and that you manage to avoid the midges.
Again thanks for sharing, don't worry about providing too much trail information. It's your journey to enjoy. Look forward to seeing more of your adventures. ATB Martin
Thanks so much Martin. I really appreciate that you have followed along. This one felt odd to upload, almost like the trail was ending all over again.
You reviewed other places well so I would respect your views. It doesnt look my sort of place. The print of the Culloden picture in Forces manor. Didn't like that. They used Jacobite prisoners as models for that painting. I think the camera bars effects you get are due to the fluorescent lights. They pulse at a different speed to the camera fps so that is why you get that. The final day is always mixed. Looking forward to getting home but also wanting to stay out on the trail. I also like an early start if I'm up. Pity the folk in the tent didnt😂 What a weird place to pitch. So well done. Looking forward to the next one.
It really was an odd place to pitch lol. The only thing I could think is they wanted to be next to the water but it is so close to the open grass area at the bothy is still doe snot make much sense. Thanks for the tip on the lighting, could not figure our for the life of me why it was so weird. I had no clue about the history behind that painting. The whole place was just an off vibe. Listed as a hotel but clearly ran more like a hostel in term of the kitchen. Enviormental health would have had a field day had the watched in to the kitchen area like that, things in the hallways are a fire hazard and walking into urine all over the toilet seat was disgusting. Wish I had snapped photos and reported to be honest. Think I was too shocked.
Nearly done thanks for sharing
I've enjoyed the way you have done these videos. It was informative and also interesting and contemplative so all ok I agree that a first walk would probably be best for the WHW but it is awfy crowded. I like a bit more solitude😂. It seems everyone is doing it this year.
Thank you. I think I have been lucky both time I walked the WHW as started at the end of the week and managed to get into nice open spaces without too many people around me for the most part. It made booking stuff easy as well. There is definitely solitude on this walk lol
Enjoying this and looking forward to following your journey.
Thanks so much. Should be more up soon. Really appreciate the kind comment and follow :) Subscribed to you also.
@@WanderFreeWithBarb Ah thanks though you will have to wait for any videos of trips I'm afraid.
I recommend the hostel at Monessie falls, what I used at Easter now the bridge is open
Just finished my night shift so tea and time to watch. Great informative section I'm looking forward to this part. Not sure my dog is with the crossings. Amazing help from the hotel as you said. You're nearly there. ATB Martin
Hopefully you have good weather, not sure I would fancy the crossings after a lot of rain as was deep in parts and current was strong at one point where I didn't make the best choice.
Thank you for making these videos, your honesty is a strength. I identify with the rollercoaster of emotions that a trail can unexpectantly cause. You should definitely be proud of yourself 😊
Thank you so much. Really enjoyed recording my experience and looking forward to sharing more.
A very moving video. You should be proud of yourself. Cheers.
Thanks so much. Definitely a life changing day.
Another enjoyable video. Thanks. When you went through Fersit (following the Hiker App route) did you end up effectively walking through someone's garden who appeared to be trying to hide the route from walkers? After a boggy section and crossing an old bridge with small pine trees growing on it (!) you end up in the middle of a large logging area (still on the Hiker App route). Saw interesting cave / tunnel entrance (gated and secured) leading under a section of woodland that had not been felled. Still trying to work out what it was. Cheers.
A good and informative, video. Well done. I did the EHW between 6 May and 13 May 2024. Like you, I couldn't find anywhere suitable near Spean Bridge to pitch my tent and had to walk on for several miles. I got to the Insh Scout camp and saw the "No Unauthorised Camping" signs but since I was on my own and it was getting late I took a chance and pitched up. No-one disturbed me and and on leaving the following morning I left no trace. Happy days. Cheers.
We all experience those emotions on the trails at some point so brave of you to share. And the kindness of people at the Laggan shows that kind people are still there to be found . Well done and keep going. ATB Martin
They were beyond amazing in that place. I think I shared more about it the next morning so won't give away too much but they went above and beyond.
I think you were brave to share this. So many people have moments like this. I know I have. Well done on a great video with an important message. 🙂
Thank you :) I rarely cry so to put it out there publicly feels odd but I have never known a gratitude like this. It ran deep to my very core.
Well done on completing the East Highland way. I have subbed and followed you on Instagram. I have just completed the East Highland way also along with the speyside way wildcamping both trail was an epic journey.
Speysideway is the perfect add on. Thanks so much for following 😀
Enjoy the trip was ment to be doing it at probably the same time as yourself beginning of May . But had to postpone until September
September should be a great time to do it. Still avoids the dreaded midges
Ohhh those little cottages dotted about the countryside. 💕. So beautiful. Well done! And I love how you left the accidental footage in. So relatable! 😊
Haha yes, figured I would leave it and my random talking to myself. Definitely keeping gopro beeps on in the future, they are annoying but missing footage is even more annoying. Cottages were so cute, not sure I could live somewhere isolated though.
This was great. You're doing an awesome job filming and talking to camera. You'd think you had been doing this for years! 😀 I loved seeing that walk at the end. Something a wee bit different for this area. I think you're right about people not taking the area and natural beauty for granted. I marvel at the views around my area every day. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful country. Can't wait to watch the rest of your journey. ❤
Thanks so much. Had fun filming it and sharing. Hopefully get day 2 up over the weekend 🙂
My kids have all gone to that camp site , I'm sure nobody would mind one respectful camper leaving no trace , it's only used a handful of times throughout the year.
I was really tempted just to use it. Looked a brilliant place.
Well done! I can’t wait to watch the rest!!!
Hopefully no more missing footage lol. The village and some camp stuff totally not there. (lesson learned, we put up with the gopro beeps)
What a fantastic start of a wonderful outdoor adventure. Wish you all the best for the next days on the trail!
Thanks so much.
Looks absolutely lovely Barb 💜😍🙏
Thanks! Hoping to get time to edit day 1 in the next couple of weeks and upload.
A great start to the series Barb. The East Highland Way is high on my to do list so im really looking forward to following your progress and picking up some tips ahead of my own trip. Was nice to follow your walk to the top of cow hill. I had a great night camping up there almost exactly a year ago and have to say for the view it was hard to beat. Thanks for sharing, all the best, Carl
Thanks Carl. Sounds like the perfect place to set up camp for the night.
Your footage is so lovely! I love that you took us to the castle along the Great Glen Way. I missed that when I walked the GGW so it was nice to see it. I’m so sad that I wasn’t able to make it as well. So proud of you and I am so excited to watch this series!!!
I think I might have a few missing clips. The beep of the go pro annoys me so had it turned off and questioning if I actually recorded everything .. Such a shame there is no access to the castle now, it was nice just having a chilled day to explore.
Shan sent me your way. Have subscribed 😊
