celebrating 90 years of the British
0:53
Council and today we have an amazing
0:55
guest that's going to kind of Reminisce
0:57
over the work that they've done with the
0:58
British Council Mr Abdullah thank you so
1:00
much for joining us on the podcast in
1:02
this celebration thank you my pleasure
1:05
so tell us a little bit about yourself
1:07
and about your your history okay my name
1:10
is Abdullah Al Baker I graduated
1:12
architectural engineering from United
1:15
States uh have bsms in architectural
1:18
engineering started working in Doha
1:21
municipality then changed to urban
1:25
planning and spent uh my whole period of
1:28
work in urban planning
1:31
uh then joined the engineering
1:35
society and uh finally With The Lean uh
1:39
also about construction so it started
1:42
with architecture went to urban planning
1:44
and went back to uh something to deal
1:48
with construction management reducing
1:50
waste I'm going to I'm going to start
1:52
with uh over the and I'm going to say
1:55
with the last 16 years in Qatar I came
1:57
here in 2008
2:00
what changes have you seen over the
2:03
years with
2:04
Qatar well Qatar uh had like a certain
2:08
Rhythm until a certain period of time
2:10
then I'm talking here about architecture
2:13
and about the urban planning then uh in
2:16
the middle of the 90 we changed all
2:19
buildings we used to have like the
2:21
highest building
2:22
26 uh story uh in zone 15 and then we
2:28
had in West Bay the highest Building 16
2:31
floor and we are using here two uh terms
2:35
in West Bay which is Zone 60 till 66 we
2:38
use the American terms which is uh floor
2:42
1 2 3 the rest of we use the British uh
2:46
way which is G+ one G+ 2 G+ 10 so it's
2:50
totally different so we have two
2:52
different master plan we have one for
2:55
whole qar which is using the British
2:57
standard or the British way and it is
3:00
made by a British consultant office L
3:03
lyand Davis Shanklin Cox uh in West Bay
3:07
it is William Pereira which is a
3:10
American consultant office so you can
3:12
see the difference between the two in
3:15
the middle of the 90s the whole thing
3:17
switched and uh the height is
3:20
opened so uh at that time we use a word
3:24
sky is the limit which is crazy because
3:27
that will affect uh everything it will
3:30
affect uh Services it will affect the
3:33
traffic it will affect everything and
3:35
you can see if you go now to the West
3:37
Bay which is Zone 60 to 66 you can see
3:40
the buildings there yeah the old
3:42
buildings uh they they are less than
3:45
even 16 story but the highest building
3:48
you can see uh things that above 60
3:51
floor yeah and uh even we had a problem
3:54
because
3:56
the airport is close to the area there's
3:59
like a limitation the airport was
4:01
changed to a different area and uh
4:05
to uh to reduce this a pro this problem

I think it's best to be more with thy self than with others in you're gowing era
Free will is illusory.
why did you write this comment ?
What a fascinating viewpoint! Even the process of questioning free will, in my opinion, provides us a sense of agency, despite the claims of others that outside forces influence our choices. It's about our awareness and decisions, whether or not we believe they are predestined. In the end, we still have the power to choose how we react to those elements and direct our own course.
😮😅
Amazing
What an inspiration. Even though I know Mohammad closely, I really enjoyed listening to his story. Also, kudos for getting your family involved. I'm sure they were happy to support.
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you enjoyed hearing Mohammad's story. It means a lot to have family support, and I’m happy you could feel that energy too. Their involvement really made the experience even more special!
Inspiring
It's becoming clear that with all the brain and consciousness theories out there, the proof will be in the pudding. By this I mean, can any particular theory be used to create a human adult level conscious machine. My bet is on the late Gerald Edelman's Extended Theory of Neuronal Group Selection. The lead group in robotics based on this theory is the Neurorobotics Lab at UC at Irvine. Dr. Edelman distinguished between primary consciousness, which came first in evolution, and that humans share with other conscious animals, and higher order consciousness, which came to only humans with the acquisition of language. A machine with only primary consciousness will probably have to come first. What I find special about the TNGS is the Darwin series of automata created at the Neurosciences Institute by Dr. Edelman and his colleagues in the 1990's and 2000's. These machines perform in the real world, not in a restricted simulated world, and display convincing physical behavior indicative of higher psychological functions necessary for consciousness, such as perceptual categorization, memory, and learning. They are based on realistic models of the parts of the biological brain that the theory claims subserve these functions. The extended TNGS allows for the emergence of consciousness based only on further evolutionary development of the brain areas responsible for these functions, in a parsimonious way. No other research I've encountered is anywhere near as convincing. I post because on almost every video and article about the brain and consciousness that I encounter, the attitude seems to be that we still know next to nothing about how the brain and consciousness work; that there's lots of data but no unifying theory. I believe the extended TNGS is that theory. My motivation is to keep that theory in front of the public. And obviously, I consider it the route to a truly conscious machine, primary and higher-order. My advice to people who want to create a conscious machine is to seriously ground themselves in the extended TNGS and the Darwin automata first, and proceed from there, by applying to Jeff Krichmar's lab at UC Irvine, possibly. Dr. Edelman's roadmap to a conscious machine is at arxiv.org/abs/2105.10461, and here is a video of Jeff Krichmar talking about some of the Darwin automata, th-cam.com/video/J7Uh9phc1Ow/w-d-xo.html
@GrantCastillou I absolutely love the level of depth you went to here and I agree with you that the truth of AI & consciousness has a lot more mechanistic angles to it from a universal laws and scientific points of view than most people are willing to accept. In fact, consciousness itself is an emergent principle, fractal in nature and has many degrees of evolution connected to it, not just on a human level, but also universally. The very contemplation of a potential AI consciousness is driving our own self-awareness and growth, and from that angle so will AI evolve.
Hi Steve, I thoroughly enjoyed this episode! The link posted for Scale7 isn't working. I did a Google search for Scale7 and all the links to their Website had the same issue (Link Unreachable). You may want to reach out to them to rectify it as this issue can dampen the enthusiasm for Scale7 and your podcast.

I understand that 'Rich Dad Poor Dad' isn't for everyone. Financial education is subjective, and what works for some might not work for others. What financial advice or books do you find most credible and effective?

Incredible insights from Mohamed from Naxxum, paving the way for innovation and growth in Qatar and beyond! 🔥
This is brilliant, I was a professional athlete ( squash player) for 12 years and was playing with a heart condition which I was totally unaware of and collapsed on beach at 45 and eventually had a new procedure called pears procedure where they replaced the aorta, open heart I hate needles and my blood pressure goes through roof. To think that I played professional squash without realising I had hypertension This is brilliant
