This is a demo of my Yamaha SG2000 from the early 80's. Completely stock with the exception of speed knobs and a brass nut. Playing through my solid state Fender Princeton Chorus amp for clean tones. Reverb set to 5, mild chorus, low set to 6, mid set to 8.5, and high set to about 5.5. For gain, using Boss Super Overdrive (SD-1) pedal.

Demo of my 1984 Yamaha SBG1300TS. It's been modified with an Ibanez locking tremolo (routed so it's fully floating and you can pull back), Seymour Duncan SH-4 JB pickup in the bridge, and Seymour Duncan SH-2N Jazz pickup in the neck. Has push/push pots for coil splitting. Playing through my solid state Fender Princeton Chorus amp for clean tones. Reverb set to 5, mild chorus, low set to 6, mid ...

Running through the tones on my new telecaster from Creek Bottom Guitars. Roasted maple neck, body made of reclaimed Douglas fir, hot 59 vintage pickups. Haven't played anything like it. Still dialing in the setup so please excuse any tuning issues. As always, don't pay attention the terrible playing!

Testing our my new Blessed Mother Rosa Mystica pedal in comparison to my trusty Boss SD-1 overdrive. Played through Fender Princeton Chorus solid state amp on my go to SG. Note: after the video I plugged one of my strats into the Blessed Mother and it REALLY brings out the single coil tone. Lot of SRV going on.

Quick tone demo of a project guitar I purchased from Elite Customs on Reverb. Lots of work planned on it. Please forgive the goofs about the second tone knob and the neck pickup I called a bridge pickup. That's what happens when you do something in one take. Next video with upgraded electronics hopefully in a couple of weeks!
All the SG1300 series guitars are through neck from what I remember, they also have a thinner body compared to the SG2000 etc
I had to strip the SG1300T I’m restoring and it’s definitely a through neck
@@jimir68 Thanks for the info! I did some checking and the 1300TS was the only one of the 1300 series with a set neck. This site has a lot of great info on Yamaha SG guitars. www.alston-family.co.uk/SG/sg1300.php
You are definitely a Yamaha man !! Got ant of their old bikes?
@@Keithrrr Thanks for watching! Not a motorcycle person. Never had the time to learn.
The Les Paul killer🎸. Nice axe, thanks for sharing
Yamaha has always produced a line pf real quality instrument's and if you keep your eyes open you see them in all forms of music jazz, 90;s metal , a lot of early pop punk bands used yamahas i remember some funk guys using them in the early 80's.. i made the mistake in 1980-81 i purchased a Ibanez custom blazer instead of a Yamaha SB1000 (think it was a 1000 might have been 2000) the only reason i went with the blazer was it was much lighter. They were both the best guitars in the store, Japan was really top of the game from 75 to 89...
Yamaha has always had a class A affordable line my aim is for their 335 killer SA2000 i have some great guitars including a Revstar !! sp90 and some nice ibanez AM153 upgraded to a 2000 us strat tele some other jazz boxes but my big aim in my retirement years is a SA2000 or a early SG/SBG 2000 (or a 1000 if i must) sorry i rambled so mush im a new subscriber very excited looking at your collection
@@REX-ks1os I recently got an SE1220 that I haven’t reviewed yet. Pretty much same specs as this guitar but a 25.5 in scale length. Looks more like a standard strat. Would love an SA2000 but need to find one for the right price.
Is there a finish on the neck headstock.
@@bluwng It has a finish but it’s very thin. Definitely less than the rest of the neck. Looks and plays great however.
I love mine (it is much more heavily modified) but still retains the brass plate that is under the bridge. The sustain on these beasties is really something to behold. The wood work is also quite gorgeous, too! Always thought that it was a shame these were discontinued. Yours looks and sounds gorgeous!
Much appreciated!
A heavy heavy guitar in every sense of the word. I've had a Stuart Adamson model since '84. It's like a brother.
I bought mine around 1988. Happened to walk into my fave guitar shop and there it was. I knew Carlos Santana played them so I picked it up and plugged it into a Marshall mini-stack. Hasn't left my hands since.
Brilliant!@@sydwynd I'd been watching Stuart and John McGeoch playing them for a few years and they were my guitar heroes when I was a kid so as soon as I could afford it I got one from the Soho Soundhouse. I can remember being terrified someone would try and pinch it as I headed home on the underground. I don't think anyone could have prised it off me even with knives and guns lol. I've hardly played it for 20 years. It's a little bit road worn from 2 decades of gigging but still VGC. I used it through a JCM800 stack for a while and then a fender Stage 185 like Stuart used in early Big Country. It sounded good through anything. I'm really looking forward to restringing it now. All hail the Les Paul Killer!
bro those 12's seem to be super rare. Can't see any for sale online currently
I know. That's why I scooped this up quickly. It's like the second 12 series I've seen in the last year.
Had exactly one of these. Sold mine about 10 years ago. Nice guitar, but the trem was not the greatest. Cool to see
Thanks! Trem is not too bad on this one. B string not staying perfectly in tune but so far that's it.
beautiful
I also read conflicting information regarding the set/thru neck construction on these. In my body I see a faint glue line where the "wings" of the body are attached, but not at the neck heel - but I don't know if that really indicates anything. In the end I love how smooth the joint is, whichever construction it is. Cheers!
I replaced the pickups on my one of these and can confirm it is a set neck, not thru.
@@jonathanhowells7478Thank you! Great to know.
Is the 1300 thinner in width to the SG2000? How do they compare, sound, playability. Would love to know your thoughts!
The 1300 TS is a tad thinner than the SG2000. It's basically missing the maple cap. That's why people think it's a neck through instead of a set neck. It's thin enough that you don't get the ridge you see on Les Pauls. From a playability perspective, think Les Paul standard. The neck profile is a little thinner that the 2000 but very comfortable. The ebony fretboard is SUPER fast. My Yamaha SG's probably have the best necks of all my guitars. From a sound perspective, that's really tough since I upgraded the pickups to Seymour Duncans. Reason I did so was that the original Spinex pickups just didn't have enough output for me. Literally, I would take it to gigs and have a noticeable volume drop from my 2000 to the 1300TS. They sounded fine, but the upgraded pickups now match my 2000 much more closely. The other big difference, of course, is the trem. Pervious owner routed the back so you could pull back and have a true floating trem. Works great now that I have it dialed in but bending notes is cleaner on the 2000. Overall, they're both great guitars. But if you're looking at OEM setup, the SG2000 will have hotter pickups, a beefier body and neck, and probably more sustain. However, if you get a good deal on an SG1300 TS, I recommend getting one. One thing to note, the big difference between the SG1300T and the 1300TS is that the 1300T has a rosewood fretboard, is neck through, and has hotter pickups. Hope that's enough detail!
Above and beyond Vince, many thanks, really appreciated! There's a 1300 without the trem too. Any personal insight to that one? Many thanks again! @@sydwynd
@@bufon63 Not familiar with them. However, here's a good website that gives you the spec differences between them. Might be helpful. www.alston-family.co.uk/SG/sg1300.php
Awesome guitar! I have an RGX 520J, it's wonderful.❤
Thanks!
Great sounding! Have loved these guitars since the 80's!
A fantastic old one , and its also the beginning of my interest in guitar, this video once again gave me the motivation to make money to buy it🤣🤣,btw could you tell me the name of the song you played in the first verse, or was it just a random riff ()
I highly recommend getting one if you can find one at a good price. The first song I played (clean) is an original composition called "I'm Coming Home". You can find the full track (along with that whole album) here: soundcloud.com/vincefranco-1/sets/vince-franco-music
@@sydwyndokk thank u :D
Do you still have the spinex pickups? Would you sell them?
Sorry, sold them long ago.
I had a purple one
Never seen one in purple! That must have been killer!
Nice sounding guitar, superb color!
Thanks! Super happy with it!
Yamaha Weddington were nice .
Never tried one of those. However, I wouldn't mind a Studio Lord. I hear they're a great alternative to a Les Paul.
The Revstars are cool, but Yamaha NEEDS to make guitars like this again.
Haven't had a chance to try a Revstar. However, agree that Yamaha should reissue these guitars. Plays as well as any superstrat I've every tried!
I so want one of these! Excellent guitar!!!
Thanks! They are hard to come by. I tend to see the 1212 more often which has similar specs.
I wish they would re-issue some of these models!!
Really nice. I have a 1980s RGX110 single humbucker and a volume knob, still one of my favorites, so simple, so savage. Might keep an eye out for this one
Highly recommend if you can find one. A 1212 is also a good option and I tend to see those more often.
@@sydwynd yeah, I’d probably stick with the dual humbuckers, love that config

I've got a 85 SBG2100 and a 72 Gibson Black LP custom, love them both😁
Love the Les Paul Customs! Had a chance once to get an Artisan model but was short on cash. One of my few regrets.

~ greetings from germany ~
Sounds great. Looks like if a sg and a les Paul had a baby
Thanks. It plays better than any SG I've ever tried and better than 98% of the Les Pauls I've ever tried. Well worth getting one for far less than a comparable Gibson.
Did you get the steel baseplate on the bridge?
Likely. It's an cheap non-Fender bridge as this was a partscaster. I plan on upgrading it one of these days. Works well enough for now.
It’s basswood body.
I thought you were John Scofield 😬
Wish I could play that well!
Lovely looking guitar. Is this custom shop, usa, ???
Actually it's the Indonesian import. Still a very good build quality for a LOT less.
Too much all at once. Review one thing at a time.
No sure what you mean. This was a demo of the Obsidian Wire blender. I showed off the different pickup combinations and the blender feature. The "changes" I made were cosmetic. I had to replace a pickup because it was broken.
Oh that's a nice looking neck
I would love to hear all about the build of that strat... The Body , the neck basically the whole story please 🙏
I purchased it on Reverb. Basically, it's a Squire size body with a Mighty Might birdseye maple neck. Aftermarket 6 point trem. I upgraded the tuners to Fender locking and then built the new pickguard. Tone Hatch vintage pickups and the Obsidian Wire Vintage 54 wiring set. In my book, Tone Hatch are the best bang for your buck in single coil pickups. That set cost me $80. Love Obsidian Wire as no soldering is required and you can get some great options. I have another strat copy with their blender. That allows you to blend in the neck or bridge pickup so you can utilize all three pickups or just the neck and bridge. All the tones!
Dude thanks for the info...looks like I'll be giving obsidian a try really soon...😎👍
Nice tone killer shirt...think I'll subscribe 🙂🙏
Oh...and I'm a subscriber now..😎👍
holy mother of tone!
I know! Love the new pickups.
U playing a banjo sounds like one
Doesn't look like a banjo. But if I can get a strat to sound like one, I say that's a win for me.
@@sydwynd I can make my guitar sound like a stuck pig, but that's usually not what I'm aiming for. I'm just a duffer.
How did you get a Rosa Mystica so recently? Thought they were all sold out
Heather hooked me up. She's the best. If you're seriously interested, message her.
Salami pickguard
Getting a little feed back I think but I can tell enough about them. I am going to give them a shot. I actually wanted some Fat 50's but short on Fat 50's money. Thanks for the review
I'm super happy with them. Great pickups for the money. Probably upgrade my other partscaster at some point.
Sounded like you need a neck adjustment, buzzing frets.
@joebubbit Probably going to replace the neck at some point. Not fully happy with it.
Playing guitar for 65 years I got into playing electric guitar maybe when I was 40. After a lot of time in bands I am now back to solo acoustic gigs. Being more of a singer who plays guitar I never got along with the Strat when I borrowed one for a 'sit in' with bands as my hands would often knock the volume. For 15 years I played the telecaster as the volume knob was further back. I sometimes played a Gibson Les Paul for a riff with sustain, but it was horribly heavy for a three hour gig on stage.
My main guitar is a Yamaha SG which weighs about 10 pounds. It's a beast to wear all night. Nice thing about a strat is it's way lighter. I'm working on not hitting the volume knob as I'm used it being completely out of my way. My biggest issue playing a strat is the middle pickup. My hand position is based on 2 humbuckers and I attack the strings basically where the middle pickup is. On a side note, you may want to check out a Brian May guitar. 3 single coils but the volume and tone are behind the bridge. Unique switching system. And a 24" scale length so the middle pickup isn't in the way. Thanks for watching!
wow they do sound pretty good
I know! I played that guitar in a band setting and was blown away at how good they sound.
@@sydwynd i have a question, do i need a baseplate on the middle pickup or dont need?
@@hillrwayne I did not use one. I simply connected the pickups to the pickguard and then plugged the leads into the Obsidian Wire system. Super easy. My only real challenge was getting the wires positioned so the pickguard didn't bow up. The leads were long and I was hesitant to cut them shorter. But it worked out.
i have an Olympic White Squier Affinity im going to do simalar upgrades to, im going to use a purple pearloid pickguard, and also the Obsidian wiring, and im going to install some Hipshot Locking tuners
If you haven't upgraded the pickups, I highly recommend you look at Tone Hatch pickups. Hand wound, very affordable, and they sound amazing. I have a video highlighting them.
@@sydwynd ok Thank you, i will check out your video
I have a Birdseye Maple mighty mite neck on an SRV Body. Partscaster facebook find, I surely love it
What did you use to finish the fretboard?
I sanded it lightly and then gave it a couple of coats of tung oil. Came out really nice. Bit of a satin feel but still get that unfinished neck vibe. Did the same with the body. Just a light stain and tung oil to seal it.
Is funny, is not straty, is not les pauly, is like the perfect blend of both! Great demo, and such a wonderful unique guitar the red special is!
At last....a review of this guitar CLEAN. To me reviewing a guitar guitar with loads of overtone or distortion doesn't give you any idea of a guitar's capabilities as they all sound pretty much the same. Thanks for sharing
I'm totally with you. I make sure to get mostly clean tones when I demo something. Too much overdrive and all guitars sound the same.
Thanks Vick nice demo sounds great man! 🤘🏻✌🏻🙏🏼✨Bw
If I buy a BYO custom shop tele with some fancy pickups and upgraded tuners/bridge etc, it'll come to around 1000 USD (approx) Will it sound and play as good (hopefully better) as a fender performer series USA telecaster (As that is around the same price but with lesser upgrades)
Can't speak to if it will sound or play as well as a USA tele. However, the body and neck of this guitar are well made and feel top notch. And you get the advantage of building it exactly as you want. Not telling you what you should do, just my opinion, mind you. The out of the box guitar sounded decent for the price.
I have the same kit sitting right next to me. I have already sanded everything down and will be starting assembly.
