Will you go to Idaho to get the Cassia Crossbill? I was looking forward to watching your video like a TV series, which birds did they see this past week...
So excited for you two. I know you will break 700. Also as a loon (a tic ) congrtats on the yellow bill. Looks like it was in winter plumage but for me that would be more than a lifer.
More selfish suppression of news. Shame on you.
Ha ha … stay tuned
Great video as always. Sooooo close to 700….
Just 2 to go for 700!!! ❤🎉
Love watching your videos. Fingers crossed your luck continues!
Absolute treat watching your guys journey!! Rooting for you two!
Omg! You guys are so funny 😂 amazing to watch you guys
I track big year birders for the ABA all year along to see who's in (besides the McQuade's) every week. I only ckeched your eBird profile a few days ago and found out about your blog and videos on TH-cam. I've binge-watched all of them today. Wow!!! Your videos are awsome! My wife, which I met through birding 32 years ago, told me she would divorce if I were to embark on a big year. To watch a couple doing it happily is inspiring. Keep up to the end of the year; only 8 birds away from the 700 milestone, You are 40 species behind Ezehiel, but doing an amazing job at documenting your big year. I hope you publish a book about it. Can you provide an update on code 1 and code 2 birds that you haven't seen?
Thanks for the kind words. Yes we plan to write a book. I wrote one about my 2022 Maine Big Year and are working on the 48 state version as we go. Great idea on the Code 1 and Code 2s. Off hand I know that the only Code 1 still outstanding is the MT Quail. The code 2s are more complicated stripping out the Hawaii and Alaska only birds
This bird has a misleading English name, in French it is called the Paruline à gorge grise, literally Gray-throated Warbler, more suited to present day than long past time when birding was a rifle or shotgun affair rather than a binoculars and camera one. Doing a lower 48 big year makes it much more difficult to see a low number bird during its migration rather than chase it in its breeding ground in sandy jackpine forest where it is not an easy bird, but still somewhat of a sure click given good earing and a keen eye. Good job at finding an immature or a female in migration!
Montezuma Quail, I'm jealous. I've been to Arizona 3 times. Any photos?
Yes but very good
Did Ingrid draw the Black-throated grey Warbler at 1:50 ? If so, amazing work!
She appreciates your kind words as she’s been working hard on her sketches… includes one on each of her journal pages
It's very interesting to learn about your Big Year planned strategy mingled with rarity chases. There is a breeding population of Black-headed Gulls in Les Îles-de-la-Madeleine, QC located in the middle of St.Lawrence Gulf. The one you saw may have been a wintering bird from Québec or maybe a European individual blown off into US.
The into made me smile. I know I have said this before but as beginning birder wow I am over the moon with the info I get from your site.
Thanks … we have fun being silly
Cute intro!
I remember seeing the wheat eater in the New York State birding discord and thinking of your last video. Then I saw you mention it in the server lol
Small world
Great video!!
Waiting for confirmation on a Henslows sparrow in NY state.
Are you guys gonna look for Cassia Crossbills?
Yes
Great vid!
Congratulations on your Connecticut. Fabulous bird.
Awesome, it's the only warbler I haven't got of the Eastern warblers. Maybe one day
Great you found the warbler I am from Connecticut and I never seen one lol😂
Thumbs up for the first thirty seconds alone!
Congratulations on the Connecticut. Not an easy bird even for us here in Minnesota.
Sorry to mention this after my comment “kick in the pants” but I was scrolling through your big year gallery (not birds we have photographed) and did a double take when I reached the photo of Common Goldeneye.
lol . . . Thanks for proof reading . . . I’ll fix it
Onto 700!
Excellent video!!
only one or two bears have ever been seen in PRNS - I think it’s a raven or a vulture 😉
5:34 At this exact point, I was drinking water and it went into my nose, you are funny! 😂
High praise… thank you
Another great video.
You two are an inspiration. Impressive count and great video.
Is there an update due on the web page? Last bird was August 19 Long-tailed Jaeger.
Ha ha … thanks for the kick in the butt. I’ll get on it
Another enjoyable video. Keep up the good work 👏
I was on that boat! Congrats on the lifers!
Fascinating videos! Thank you.
Excellent video!! We really enjoy following along on your big year!!
Is there an eBird I can follow?
Which lens are y’all pairing with the new camera?
"today was the first day that the temperature cracked 100 in two years"..What!! I live in the Central Valley in Northern California and every place in the interior gets days above 100 many times a year I think what you meant to say was the coastal LA basin. But everywhere else in California specially 10 to 20 miles inland from the beach gets temperatures above 100. we've had about 25 so far and although it's an unusually warm summer, it's common to get 15 to 20 days above 100 every year. There is a mark difference between the coast and the interior parts of California.. for example I live in Stockton work currently it's 102. But I have a second home in Monterey on the coast and it's 69. It's common to have 30-40° difference in temperatures between the being ON the coast and the interior.
That’s what we meant to say … lol
That was some great birding! Pretty cool birds to the list!!
This just made me realize (once again) how far birds can fly! A couple of weeks ago I was getting some nice views of hundreds of Scopoli's Shearwater (Calonectris diomedea) returning to their nesting cliffs 15min away from my hometown in Menorca (Spain). Crazy to think they go as far as USA... and come back regularly to breed! Also crazy to think that I *might* share an observation of a singular individual with a birder 6400km (4000 miles) away!
Thanks for sharing … and realize they make the trans-Atlantic journey twice every year of their lives
How are you liking the new camera? Worth the investment?
Love it … of course today I had the camera set on the pet setting instead of the bird setting while photographing 5 lifers .., I’m still an idiot regardless of how much tech I surround myself with
I'm enjoying following this saga from the UK. Of course, it's odd to see you chasing birds such as Eurasian goldfinches, Egyptian geese and ring-necked parakeets but it's all great fun.
I hope you’re going for a Yellow-footed Gull at the Salton Sea in California because they will be incredibly difficult to find once summer is over.
We are probably on the 9th
Excellent video!
I came late to your story and must say i was enjoying it and binge watching the episodes. Was admiring your planning, stamina and resilience and cheering you on. Unforttunately i then watched the episode with the suppressed Ptarmigan. I must say i was very disappointed with that behaviour. For me the essence of birding is an altruistic sharing of news and co-operation. Unless the bird is breeding and this is jeapordised or there are other birds similarly endangered or there is fragile environment there is no legitimate basis to suppress news. Selfish oneupmanship is not a valid reason. Disappointing.
Hi Michael, We're glad you are enjoying our videos . . . until the Ptarmagin at least. We too want as many people as possible to enjoy seeing all of the wonderful birds that are to be found. Unfortunately, this bird appeared in a private neighborhood with narrow dirt roads, very limited parking and an association that would not allow for more than a few people to come in to see the bird at a time. Thus the need for controlled entry and no posting to eBird allowed until we were given permission - as doing so would have revealed the location and shut down access to the bird. Had the bird survived, as many people as would have liked to would’ve been able to see the bird. Sadly, that was not the case. Best
I'm fortunate enough to live in Portal Az. Hardcore birders will know where that is. Unfortunately this video would not display on my computer. Green washout.
We've spent a lot of time in Portal this year. Sorry you're having trouble with this video . . . perhaps try again? Or another device?
Wondering why they named it Scapolli’s Shearwater if they are trying to move away from birds named after people. Won’t they just rename it later?
No doubt … the whole renaming thing will be entertaining
Yes the lobsters 🦞!! I wish to visit Maine for Biridng one day! I live in California!!
You should!
