I just found your incredibly interesting podcasts - thank you so much for them. In this discussion the spay/neuter topic seemed to get cut short after the population control argument. I find the topic fascinating and wondered if you might consider doing a podcast specifically on this? I’m originally from Germany where it’s illegal to spay/neuter healthy dogs unless there is a medical reason, and it looks like the WSAVA has now updated their advice to say that dogs owned by responsible people should be left intact. However, I live in tthe UK now where spay/neuter is still routinely recommended. It’s very conflicting, coming from a different cultural background. I’d love to hear your views in more depth. Thank you again for providing so much great content 😊

I am a qualified veterinarian with a degree in Veterinary Science from India, and I am interested in practicing in South Africa. I understand there is a provisional authorization that allows practice for two years, during which I can prepare for and pass the required licensure exams. Could you please provide guidance on how to apply for this provisional authorization, as well as any specific requirements, timelines, or resources to help me successfully complete the exam process within this period?
@shoshaannajacob let me look into the for you. Perhaps email me drcarra@pawsandeffect.co.za so we I can send you any information I can acquire.

I think this is a brilliant idea. It's such a deep and emotional subject. At the end of the day we have to make the right decision for a beloved pet. It's our duty for their unconditional loyalty to us ....if allowed they will go into suffering for us. It's the most heartbreaking and ultimate act of kidness to make. I'm in SA..I do behavioral work and I adore my animals. I'm very interested in what you're saying and I'm interested in being involved with this process. Very necessary, very worthwhile!❤
Why is so expensive??? Many people simply can't afford the service or medication for their pets.
Wow she is very delicate
Yeah when vets push yearly boosters no wonder pet care is expensive. Means tested for a lifetime but given yearly. Dog gets sick from side effects and adverse events. Also spot on treatment full of chemicals. Known to cause seizures and neurological issues. But that keeps the vets in business. Castration to early or even at all is another issue! Growth plates not closing when they should, leading to hip problems in later life. Yeah been there with my 1st dog and learned the hard way that yearly visits to the vet, wasn’t good for her health nor the pocket. She lived to a happy 16 once I stopped all unnecessary treatments! Wish I’d also known about raw food. My 1st .w dogs would have been a picture of health had I not listened to all the stuff vets said !
Makes since. A puppy is like raising a child. I just got a puppy. Feels like he’s going through terrible twos
Love Graeme 👍 🐾
Or simply do not get an exotic pet?! It's not his natural enviroment and it should not be there in the first place!
Amazing that when we feed our dogs and cats non biologically appropriate food, they get human diseases! A bit like humans with sugar and carb consumption! Can’t go wrong with 1 meal a day of meat bone and offal for a happy healthy dog or cat 😊
Good advice 👍😎

Carpet pythons can be surprisingly great for beginners too. That was my wifes 1st snake. The Irian Jaya locality stays a relatively manageable size and is unbelievably hardy and forgiving to keep compared to some of the other carpet pythons. They seem to be very slow growing too. Took 5+ years for my boy to reach 6ft, and he hasnt grown noticably since. Mine went missing in my house for about 3 months when he was little too. I found him chilling in an old shoe, still perfectly healthy. We have had him around 9 years now and hes never bitten anyone or had any health issues whatsoever. The trick with that locality is to not keep it crazy humid. I only give him a spritz if hes shedding. Many people assume that they need high humidity like other members of Morelia, and they end up running into respiratory issues. I mean they are Morelia, but their care is almost nothing like a green tree python for example, other than their love of climbing of course. I remember struggling even to get my GTP (Morelia Azurea, Biak local) eating rodents back in the day. I had a few anoles who i kept as pets temporarily just so that i could scent my rodents. It was so akward rubbing dead mice on my anoles. I didnt hurt then, but the poor lizards must have been so confused lol. Its like "dont mind me, just let me rub this dead animal on you for a second." At least it worked lol. After awhile he took regular F/T Mice without issue. The humidity and ventillation was tricky without a mist system though. I basically had to spray him 5 times a day. My carpet python though has literally never turned down a meal in his life. Such a champ. Hes got the feeding response of a retic and the hardiness of a cornsnake. They are not my favorite pythons to keep overall, but they are one of the most interesting and rewarding species that would still be reasonable to keep as a 1st pet snake with a little research.
Loved this insert. Is Graham the new Dog Whisperer?
This is amazing Thankyou ❤
thank you for everything you do! you are bound to take care of the living beings at both ends of the leash and that is never easy!

ROPE BURN!!! Beware! .. I ended up in the Hospital ER with a bad burn wound on the back of my knee from one of these Flexi leashes wrapping around my leg. Took 3 wks to heal.
This podcast was helpful and informative. I battle the season allergies with my babies. They are pitbulls and suffer with scratching ears and paws, and the underbelly hotspots. I will consult a vet for the medicinal shampoo and/or treatment (non cortisone, of course). Thank you again.
@@yvettekohl9328 delighted you found this informative. Thank you for taking the time to leave us a comment. Reviews really help us understand if the podcast is resonating with owners. Have a lovely day.
@yvettekohl9328 thanks for taking the time to watch and comment as well. Pitties unfortunately do fit into the "skin problem" category, but we are very fortunate nowadays to have many options to get the skin managed well, and often does require a multimodal approach. Don't be scared of cortisone, it does still have a place (short term) to get a very bad skin settled before using one of the other available non cortisone options. Short term cortisone use can actually assist with the non cortisone options efficacy once the cortisone course is finished. Non detergent shampoos are excellent too, there really do have a place in the management of itchy skin too. We'd love to hear back from you as to how the management is going.
Raw food diet, and homeopath vets are best way to go, regards from South Africa ❤🙏

Thank you so much for this episode! Dr Carra I bumped into you at HVH with my cat Axel who is Stage 4 CKD. This has been incredibly helpful. Thanks to you guys my boy is doing well on his daily subcuts, Pronefra and Fortekor. He also comes for weekly weigh ins and Arenesp which had made a very big difference. I'm proud to say he's on day 40 post diagnosis and that he is eating well and actually gained 300g as of last Friday. Your team is incredible and I'm so incredibly grateful. Much ❤ Kate Mc Cabe Mc Kitty Cat Rescue
@mckitty2715 I'm so so delighted to hear! Well done for being such a dedicated and proactive owner! Thank you for sharing your experience on here and supporting the podcast. Give Axel a big love from me.
What if she pees on the ground? (Its a girl about 2.5 years old.)
@Nvm.biri.3 This might be a sign of renal issues or a urinary tract infection . Ask your vet for a syringe and try to collect a small sample for them to test the urine? They can see how dilute it is as well as if there is any blood or protein in there. If all is normal, it may be behavioural, and for that, I have other advice.
@@drcarra uhm im not sure if its totally behavioural but she literally pees on clothes on the floor like she is trying to say something actually. Not in the place she has to pee, actually its closer to it (Really sorry for grammar mistakes im not a fluent English speaker)

Great Subject!
I'm so glad we made the decision to sign up our two year old dachshund for pet insurance and it enables us to better care for her without worrying too much about the costs.
Well explained Megan.. completely agree.
I just took my Chihuahua to the vet yesterday because he had been shaking his head and scratching his ear. It turned out he he dislodged a small bit of earwax mixed with some hair that was irritating him. The vet removed it and while I was there, I asked him to clip his nails. The whole visit cost $120.00: $89.00 for the office visit, $31.00 for the nail trim, he gave me a discount on the ear cleaning for being a regular customer. I've had animals all my life, always rescuing strays, never going to a pet store or a breeder to acquire a pet. I will not be rescuing any more animals, I simply can't afford the vet bills.
Some of the biggest thieves are vets.
Same enormous college debt, same expensive equipment.
Super informative. Thanks!
Every pet owner should watch this video. Even my own medical doctor friends don't understand this..... I spend a lot of time explaining this to people and I'm.not even a vet. If you own a pet, you must understand Veterinary care will cost money. Owning a pet is a privilege, not a right. I am lucky enough to have pet insurance and it makes me happy to encourage the vet to do the best they can without worrying about cost.
Thank you for your support Sally. We are hoping some of the misconceptions are just a lack of awareness and conversations like this help improve trust in the profession as a whole and our intensions as individuals. Dr Megan had such an incredible way of explaining the cost of veterinary care, I hope it resonates with many pet owners and industry professionals like you.
Raw meaty bones are wonderful a dog. They can’t become lodged, unless the bone was too small for the dog. Get a giant bone. Dental treats are “processed crap, like vegetable glycerin”. Not dangerous in small amounts, but it’s not food??? I don’t want to feed my dog glycerin. Or any other preservative or dye. You just need to educate yourself on which bone is correct for your dog weight and breed.
Omg….this is so awful. Entertaining. But so bad. I’m doing the exact opposite of this advice. Happy about it too. You want to advocate processed carbs for dogs and cats?? Seriously. (Cats are 100% carnivores). And the meaty bones comment. 🙃. They need raw meaty bones!! It’s the best for them! The dental “treats” you talk about are also all processed garbage. Feed your pets real food people. Doesn’t that make sense? Does to me And the woman at the beginning of this conversation said that the raw feeding side was so emotional about it. They she asked why? “Why are they so emotional about this, when it’s just science??” Then at almost the end of the video she says that She’s “a little emotional about all of it!?!?” You are the emotional one. We are doing what makes common sense. Thats it It’s makes sense to feed raw. And it works. And we don’t care what you do. She also said…”dogs need a balanced meal e everyday”. That’s not fact. Dogs need balance over time. Same as people. Do you calculate everything you put in your mouth, to make sure that your are eating the optimal food for you every single meal, every day??? No you’re not. It doesn’t make sense. I go by what makes sense. lol. You definitely didn’t change my mind
Thank you for sharing your perspective. As a veterinarian and scientist with a degree in Biological and Medicinal Chemistry, my recommendations are based on extensive research and a commitment to the health and well-being of animals. Pets, unlike humans who may live into their 80s or beyond, have much shorter lifespans. This makes it critical to ensure they receive balanced nutrition daily to prevent deficiencies and excesses, which can occur more quickly in their bodies. While I understand that you may have different views on feeding practices, my advice is grounded in scientific evidence and my professional experience. I appreciate your feedback, although I find some of your comments to be quite rude and dismissive. My goal is always to provide the best care for the animals I serve, and I hope we can respect each other’s dedication to pet health, even if our methods differ.
As our pets are reliant on us as pet owners to feed them correctly, it is up to us as veterinarians to guide and inform our clients to feed the best food there is available. It is clear from your comment that you have very little understanding in veterinary nutrition, as well as human nutrition. Our pets do require a balanced nutrition to ensure good health and vitality. Eating potentially unbalanced nutrition, be it in the form of fresh / raw food or other home prepared meals, can absolutely result in nutritional deficiencies, leading to a plethora or problems that we as vets then need to address and hopefully rectify. Any human dietitian or nutritionist worth their degree will tell you that for the best health and vitality in humans, a daily balanced diet is recommended. If you have no legitimate qualification in veterinary or human nutrition, then your comment above is flawed. Humans as it stands do not follow a well balanced daily diet. It is majority fast and convenient foods which anyone can tell you is not healthy, short term or long term. Yes, as a human it is often difficult to stick to this ideal daily balanced diet, but it is very easy to do so for our pets, which rely on us to feed them. If you had actually listened to the entire podcast, it is only our recommendation not to feed raw for all the facts noted in the podcast, but should you choose to feed fresh / raw, our recommendation would be to cook it to prevent issues with the potential pathogens (to name a few) listed in the podcast. For you to assume that Dr Carra (or other people) doesn't follow a balanced diet is obnoxious and actually has nothing to do with the facts and scientific evidence shared in the podcast, because a lot of people will follow a daily balanced diet, assuming you do not, and that is your prerogative. My exact words in the podcast says that there are pros and cons to feeding kibble / fresh / raw. There is no perfect diet, but in our research, the cons certainly and significantly outweigh the pros for feeding raw diets, at least in our country where there is little to no control over the manufacturing of it. Maybe wherever you come from there are checks and balances in the raw food manufacturing movement, where we come from, there is not. It would therefore be borderline irresponsible for us at vets to not inform and educate our clients about the potential risks of feeding raw diets.
Very well presented. Very informative. Thank you Dr Carra and Dr Nic.
I've fed my dogs raw chicken for many years and they only got sick once of cat flu which they both survived. That was the only time I had to take them to the vet. They have beautiful teeth and fur. The kibble manufacturers use these vets to promote their products otherwise they will go bankrupt if everyone uses raw food which is best for pets.
