#50 Ask an Archer : Sami Ugri Archer Mar 3 2024 part 2
Just over 3years since my last interview (can't believe it's been that long) I sat with Sami Ugri the Archer from Finland. His YT page is here www.youtube.com/@UgriArcher.
Super interesting guy who even shoots on skii's!
Amongst many things, we talk about his background and intro to archery, how he makes his own bows, where he learned archery and his interest in Japanese archery in particular.
Hope you can benefit.

    The names are carved as a form of quality control so that if something goes wrong it is easy to trace back to the exact batch and people who made it. So the officials only puts their name if they are sure of the quality of the components. This practice applies to everything including bricks uses to build the Great Wall.

    He said while presenting bow "Ya Allah" , while pulling the arrow "Bismillah", while relasing the arrow "Ya Hak". He chanted God's 3 different Arabic names, the "Bismillah" is starting verse of Quran and muslims start every action with it.. It is like sealing all that is done for God consent and permission and leaving end result to God... Yeah that is pure Ottoman Archery...It must have been a sigth to see tens of thousands of Ottoman archers chating these with all out voice together while shouting continously.

    Is this a regular release for Tatar and Turkish bows? It looks a lot like the Comanche release in North America: shallow and fast. I mean, you release in front of your face. With Manchu bows being heavy ones they release beyond the ear, while other asiatic archery styles (mongol, korean, ming, tibetan ) release somewhere between eye and ear. I saw others with turkish bows, even heavy ones, releasing at mouth or eye level. I shoot a mongol bow, 31.5" safe draw length, but my draw length is beyond 33" and that makes me feel a bit uncomfortable due to feeling my shoulders do not align properly, yet you make it look so simple ...

    I do not agree that you can only own a composite if you deserve it, that might make sense in the past but today we are not warriors, we are hobbyists and enthusiasts. If you want to restrict yourself with such philosophies then do so, but for others it is their decision. If the bowyer is happy to make one for you and you are happy to pay the amount then that is all to it. Interesting discussion otherwise.

  • @jareth7456
    @jareth7456 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very very interesting, that the bow materials become stifer the faster it is drawn now makes more sense as to why the old archers would want to shoot as quickly as possible..the reason for the snatched release is much more clear

    • @belto3149
      @belto3149 ปีที่แล้ว

      Practice. Also holding multiple arrows is cool but useless It's gonna be harder to aim. I personally recommend you to keep things the way they are but if you want to have the arrow on the right then practice.

    • @wewatchmovies4446
      @wewatchmovies4446 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@belto3149 i researched it. Seems it requires the grip his right hand uses to draw the string. Whereas I use the English three finger draw

    you call that Khatra??? the entire purpose of Khatra is to move the bow out of the path of the arrow so that the arrow flies perfectly straight and doesn't lose energy by contact with the bow causing it to fish tail ....only rolling the bow to the side will accomplish this .....what your doing is ....nothing really....it's like doing nothing twice

    • @ArcheryforAll
      @ArcheryforAll ปีที่แล้ว

      There are more than one way to khatra, sideways is one of the, forwards another, some even combine it. It's just what works for your boumdy/bow/arrow combination.

    • @remvisual9201
      @remvisual9201 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Forward khatra is a result of the ring and little finger pushing against the handle when the string is being released. Side khatra is a result of 2 forces: one hand holds the bow on the centre of the hand (unlike takedown recurves held higher) and the other hand pulls the string away from the axis forcing the bow hand to rotate slightly towards the outside to keep balance; upon release, the bow palm returns to it's natural position pushing the bow sideways. If one pushes more with the 2 fingers during a side khatra, the result is a mixture of the two. The irony is that I've only started asiatic archery a few months ago and shot a few times only, yet I know these details. Try to use that brain before proceeding to your keyboard battles.

    I'd like to know exactly what qualities you to teach Mamluk archery ? ....because you sure don't nock your arrows like one , try nocking that way while bouncing up and down or from a horse at full gallop. I wouldn't trust it to work every single time without fail or fumble.....not to mention that the Mamluk were capable of firing arrows very quickly you may have heard of the Mamluk test ....the way you're nocking could never allow the rate of fire necessary to pass not even close.

    • @ArcheryforAll

    very very slow......there are historically accurate methods that are far far faster and smoother, also you can Khatra forward all day and it still won't help your arrows fly straight....there needs to be some side Khatra for it to work
