Today’s first reading from the Book of Wisdom paints a picture of the righteous person being persecuted by the wicked. The wicked plot against the just man, mocking his fidelity to God, believing that his suffering will disprove God's favour. "Let us test him," they say, "by insult and torture, that we may find out how gentle he is." This foreshadows the rejection and suffering that Jesus would endure at the hands of those who opposed Him, and by extension, it reflects the persecution that all those who seek to live righteously may face.
