    I've been cycling since the eighties and working in bike shops for almost as long. I agree that the newest bikes and their components aren't good for consumers or for bike shops. I loved your comment about fitness; as long as your bike is reasonable, one's fitness is much more important than the bike you ride.

    Have you changed any freehubs when upgrading bikes? I have 1990 nasbar road 6 speed rear cassette. I want to use 2 sets of wheels 1 for clean paved road trails and the other for groomed gravel trails. I got a good price on bontranger race lite but it is a little too wide for my bike in the back. Any ideas?

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      At the moment no! They may look a tiny bit crusty but are working phenomenally. I’m assuming your rear spacing is 135mm? But the line of hubs that’s on this bike is the Shimano exage with the 135mm rear. Hopefully you can snag some or potentially modify the axle size But also hub bodies I’ve never changed that, so hopefully one day I can to gain knowledge of what it’s like!

    Very nice bike NOS! What's that frame? If you are into friction shifting, keep your eyes peeled for Simplex D/T shifters. They are a unique non slip design, much sought after back in the 70s, but unobtanium in Europe because of the market dominance of Campag who were doing their all with importer tie up deals to try to keep the Japanese out. BTW I'll tell you because most people have never heard of this guy. I have a mint original condition 1977 Flema Campionissimo build number 5 in my collection. Fritz Fleck, Mannheim Germany was a very, very eccentric one man show who only built for select riders in the national teams. Had to win gold first, & only then did they get the bike. By the mid 70s he was an absolute master with his exquisite steel craftsmanship. Check him out. I've only ever seen one other Campionissimo, its in Minnesota, on full gen1 Dura Ace. These are SSL frames, with such delicate lug work & tiny fork crowns. German reserve, nothing like the showy Italians. I would not trade mine for 3 Colnago Supers. I also bought in all the spares & consumables to keep it running long into the future......Western Australia.

    As someone who owns mostly older/vintage steel bikes, and has to content with 126 mm rear spacing, i appreciate you doing those budget reviews. The only thing I find off putting on these casettes is the writing on the largest cog. I have a 7 sp silver version and took the heat gun to it to make the godawful stickers come off ;) Edit: while maybe less of a budget option, but I think you can use a 10 sp casette and remove a cog to make it work with a 7sp hub if you have the need for a specific cadence. And since you are doing friction, gettin "in-gear" should be a non issue.

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Haha yea that does puzzle me why they put to logo and stuff on it if it’s a budget option, I would think it costs Shimano more money over time for the big logo printing. I might try that with another cassette just cause!

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Definitely practice and anticipating the terrain that’s approaching. You begin to “feel” the road and also it really makes you know what each gear combo feels like. It took me probably 5 years of consistent downtube shifter riding to master but now I don’t want it any other way tbh and I’m just as fast as others with brifters

    So glad I recently discovered your channel as I'm really enjoying it. Using a 9 speed 11 to 36 t HG cassette with an Alivio derailleur as a 1x. No clutch no problems. Who needs more than 7 to 9 speeds max. Your bike looks so beautifully simple.

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thank you so much for watching! Honestly I think the clutch isn’t as essential as the industry makes it out to be. For real too many gears these days! Thanks again!

      Correct. Alll those gears for what?

  • @charlesmansplaining
    @charlesmansplaining 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I understand why having a few usable cogs works for you because watching the video your terrain is mostly flat. I live in the Northeast where the terrain is all hills. Since I care about my knees I pay close attention to my cadence. Having more gears offers me the selection to keep my cadence around 80 to 100 rpm. That said, I don't see the need for 13 cogs in the back and will never buy into that. I have a 50-34 chainset up front and 11-30 in the rear. I'm currently having a custom steel frame made for me which will have a Campy 10 speed Centaur group I've had in my closet for a long time. The electronic groups are a bad investment because the updates or new releases keep coming out and don't seem to be compatible with the old versions therefore are not sustainable for more than 5 years. I had SRAM eTap which went obsolete when AXS came out, and I have Shinano Di2 11 speed DA which went obsolete when the 12 speed stuff came out. I'm not paying over $4k for a new group again. The industry is out of it's mind.

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching! 100% agree with everything you said. I do get it a tad bit more gears is definitely needed for your area but yea, 13 gear cassettes is rediculous

    Run 7 speed on my commute bike with a 44/32/22 crankset. Parts are cheaper but durable, 7 speed wheels are strong due to less dishing. Winter tends to wreck freehubs on my commute bike so will use a Tourney freewheel which easy to replace if required. I use Dia-Compe ENE friction shifters on Gevenalle brake levers (instead of being on downtube, shifters mount on brake lever).

    • @newoldsteel

    It's funny how the industry keeps pushing more gears, but I would bet that the majority of cyclists, especially we casual ones never use them all. My road bike has a 10 spd rear and I very rarely use the 11 and 13. My mtb has a SRAM 1 x 12 and I have yet to use the the top three gears.

  • @vintagesteel
    @vintagesteel 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I have a 1x with an 8 sp 11-34t Shimano cassette and a Shimano claris rear derailleur but I have down tube indexed shifters instead. It's super dialed and shifts just almost as good as a much more expensive setup. Only thing is the cheap cassettes wear out super quick and then wear with the chain in a way to where only that specific chain is compatible with the cassette it was used on. When you try to put a new chain on, it starts jumping on the cassette so be prepared to also swap out the cassette when it's time to swap out the chain

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Shimano Claris is another super underrated groupset that is awesome. True that, especially with all the sand I ride through I bet I’ll have to replace my stuff a lot sooner than later!

    • @vintagesteel
      @vintagesteel 9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The sand will definitely eat away at it faster. I tried swapping out a new chain after 3 months on my cassette with relatively light riding and it was already so worn it was incompatible with a new chain but for a $12 chain and $20 cassette I can't complain

    I'm using a Suntour XCE rear-derailleur on my Trek 790 bike. By stiff, do you mean that its spring was too strong? I do indeed feel that it seems to have a somewhat strong spring on mine, because the Shimano down tube shifter sometimes seems to slip slightly. I also have a Suntour XCE derailleur in the front and that one is definitely making the shifter slip a bit.

    • @newoldsteel
      @newoldsteel 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for commenting! It was just extremely difficult to move the bar end shifter like I had to use a TON of force. My Suntour derailleur is very clean and I know Suntour stuff is great quality just didn’t work well with the shifter. I tried loosening the mounting bolt but still didn’t solve it. Luckily the Sram allows me to barely push and pull the shifter and it stays in place. I’ll cover this in a future video too!

      Unfortunately no. Some said it was my bottom bracket but I’ve since used the same bottom bracket with other cranks and it was fine. I’ve even thrown on brand new chainrings that were 100% straight and it did the same thing. I am currently using the crank arms as a 1x setup on my gravel bike conversion but I won’t be using them again as a 2x setup.

      Thank you for your answer. Maybe I have to change the whole crankset then

    Both 7 and 8 speed Shimano shifters will work on 7 speed so long as you have an SIS Shimano derailleur. Also the free hub body can probably be changed to an 8 speed one- if you take the axle out there's usually a 10mm hex that attaches the freehub bodies for old shimano hubs.

      I'll definitely have to try that! I've never played around between 7 and 8 speed Shimano systems, only 8-9. I also never swapped a freehub body yet either but I definitely gotta try it. Thanks for watching!

    Where’d you get the cantilever brakes from? They look pretty awesome!

      Got the front and back separately from two different sellers on eBay, but they also sell them on Amazon! Surprisingly Shimano seems to still be making them.

    I had to "true" the stock cassette. After bending it, I have it shifting pretty well now. However, I drop my chain of the front chainring very frequently. Very annoying

      glad the shifting works better for you. But YES I 100% had the same issue with the chain dropping often. What I didn't try back then was a better narrow wide 1x chainring I've heard this has helped other owners too. The stock narrow wide chainring isn't the best.

    I have this exact bike for about a year and was going to do some videos on the mods and experience......till I saw your channel haha. Just did the 700c conversion now that they don't make the Conti Ultra 3 in 27 x 1 1/4 anymore.

      That’s what stinks the limited tires for 27 wheels, otherwise I would have been totally fine with that wheel size! Thanks for watching!
