The game that REVOLUTIONIZED the arena shooter genre. A look at Unreal Tournament 25 years later
Wolfenstein got everyones attention. Doom capitalized on that and ran with it. Quake became the first POPULAR full 3D FPS game, and Unreal brought to the table an engine and game that would change the gaming landscape.
Here is a look back at Unreal Tournament 1999.

The video game HORROR Trilogy that went under the radar.

We all know about the mega big budget game franchises out there. But there are many great games lying in wait in the indie community. The devil Came through Here trilogy is a great example of great storylines and characters taking front and center over multi-million dollar graphical engines.

At a time when the horror genre was on the rise and very popular due to the likes of Resident Evil and Silent hill, one company brought to us a title that tackled a genre from a new perspective, much like Parasite Eve. But...is it any good? Hope you all enjoy the video. Spooky season is almost upon us! Stay tuned for some great halloween theme videos coming this October!

Back in 2004, when FPS games were on the rise along with complex, engulfing RPGs that took advantage of the new powerful consoles, one game dared to go agianst the norm and in the process, became a cult classic that has spawned a series that has gone on to include over a dozen games. But a few factors worked against this great console and things turned out different from what Sega had envisioned. thumbnail pic was found at : www.wired.com/story/why-i-still-play-dreamcast/

There were quite a few memorable shooters on the NES, but there are also a few that we missed out on here in the US as the market shifted over from the 8bit platform to 16bit and the rise of the PC CD ROM craze. Recca is one such title that every SHmup fan needs to play at least once. hope you all enjoy the video!

There have been many amazing movie summers since then, but the summer of 89 alone brought about some classics to already existing franchises, and revitalized the superhero franchise at a time when it was almost non-existent at the movies. Product placement in video games is nothing new. But ususally, games will let you know right off the bat what product it is representing. Darkened Skye does no such thing and makes no apologies about it. Note: I got to level 4 before I called it quits. The collision and edge detection and continuous onslaught from enemy fire in the castle made the game unbearable to play. The aiming mechanic di...

Unreal Gold and UT99 are now free to play through the oldunreal installer! google that! Epic officially gave them the okay to do it!
2:50 - Its not called "Unreal 3D Engine" It is called Unreal Engine 1.
Shoulda been released in the US. Great game. I played it and beat it
Thank you for pronouncing it correctly.
PC is where it is at, and always have been when it comes to fps.
once you master the keyboard mouse combo control, it's hard to go back to a controller.
@@gamingquarterly6353 I am too old and with too much brain rot to actually learn how to use a controller in fps :P
It had no support in North America, a lot of awesome Japanese and European games were never released in the US for some reason. I got one for my birthday in 1989 I was only 9, we ended up with 5-6 games for it (Keith Courage, Blazing Lazers, Victory Run, R-Type, Chew Man Fu, I think Devils Crush too), it kept the whole family busy, and the games were so much more impressive than what we were used to with the Commodore 64 we upgraded from. I remember when we got R-Type it looked arcade perfect, and that was pretty impressive back then because R-Type was still pretty new. To be fair, if they had only supported it more we would of had more games for it, they even released a great copy of Street Fighter 2 for it so the console was capable of going toe to toe with Sega and Nintendo's 16 bit consoles. Every video rental place had SNES and GENESIS game rental sections, but the TG-16 we could only get the games at Radio Shack and I never saw a single rental place that had TG-16 games, so the console just withered away without kids ever seeing that it was a great console. The failure was on NEC for not properly supporting and marketing their product in North America, it was a good console that would have succeeded otherwise. Also, for some strange reason, all the games we saw and bought at the time had a generic kind of box art, its like one artist was making the covers for all the games and always using the same style for all of them, it was kind of odd, I do not know what that was about.
I personally never saw any TG16 games for rental, but others have commented they had them in some video stores. I agree with you 100%. The TG16 was marketed in the US with the Japanese mindset. the nickel and dime approach didnt help either. having to buy a turbotap alone, just to play 2 player games, was unacceptable.
Unreal was such an awesome game plus the music from Unreal to UT was amazing.
Great video. Unreal Tournament remains one of the best FPS ever. I'm still playing it from time to time. Also I must mention the fantastic soundtrack. I have it saved as mp3 in my digital library and I'm listening to it pretty often, it's that great.
Can't argue with that. I agree that I should have put a bit more attention to the music, cause it is great.
Thankfully Unreal Gold and Unreal Tournament are now both free on the Internet Archive, so these masterpieces can still be enjoyed by new players today 😎
Thank goodness for the internet archive. And it looks like it is back online after that hack a few weeks back. Thanks for the tip!!
It was cool game. Can't be sure now, but maybe the first fps I played.
UT2004 is my favorite. i played UT99 a lot when it came out.
I've yet to play UT 2004. Another addition to my ever growing backlog.
@gamingquarterly6353 UT 2004 bigger and better and way more mods, skins, maps, user maps and more. Vehicle capture the flag is fun game mode too It has the most beloved from UT99 too . And you can connect it to openspy to play online. Strongly recommend it. İ played Unreal Tournament 3 too. It has better graphics, but Ut2004 plays and feels better than UT3 in my opinion
@@gamingquarterly6353 lemme know if you need a copy. I own the entire Unreal collection on GOG before they delisted. Offline installers are the best thing about GOG (and no DRM, so you actually _own_ what you purchase). You have a discord?
Talk about the timing on this video! Unreal and Unreal Tournament are both now free and just officially preserved by Internet Archive *today* with the support of Epic Games!
That's awesome to hear 👏
Damn. Good timing indeed. I was not aware and another viewer posted the same thing. Gotta go play the lotto now.
I always hated UT, I dunno why but I just never liked the feel of the shooting and moving. It's still something I hate today with shooters in UE4 or whatever version they're up to now. I instantly could feel Insurgency Sandstorm was on UE and not Source anymore and it ruined the whole game for me. Why Titanfall and Apex Legends felt so great and Jedi Survivor felt so bad to me.... Just something about UE that I do not like.
It's funny you mention that, but you are not alone. My friend is a HUGE FPS fan and plays games like call of duty and other games of that genre, even way back then, when military FPS games were a new breed, yet could never get into the frantic pacing of UT. Even to this day.
@@gamingquarterly6353 I loved Quake, I just hated Unreal Engine games and I had no fanboy allegiance, just something always feels off about that engine.
I miss pinball. It's simply a superior form of gaming. I miss real arcade games as well. Sitting down while gaming is sub par.
Funny you mention pinball cause one of the main financial support that led to the design of the unreal engine and the first game was the sales of the pinball game Epic had made years earlier. I miss arcades as well.
Lava giant.
good CTF stage.
@ I once played it for 17 hours straight with bots
wanted to play online 2004 only to realize this, where are the russians and their servers?
instead of hacking banks and government sites, they need to be keeping UT servers up. 😅
@@gamingquarterly6353 We used to have piorities!
It really should, and make it simple as always, we dont need another customize your gear and weapons 😅 Thanks bro 👍🏼
I think the arean shooters nowadays do lean too much on weapon and armor customization along with special powers and such. I tried playing overwatch one time, and could not keep up with it all. Great game though, but way over the head for me.
Unreal Tournament is as fun today as it was in 1999. Should the series be brought back by Epic? Does Epic even care at this point?
They tried bringing it back until they realized that they could make way more money supporting Fortnite.
its zanac zanac, zanac cross zanac, zanac ex zanac or only zanac?
I just call it Zanac X
I received a TG16 from my parents when they were blowing them out at RadioShack and I loved the hell out of it! A lot of friends would come over and ask "What is this?!" Cause all they all owned the NES. But every time they tried it, they loved the games! (Even Keith Courage). And just last month I ordered a broken dock and CD unit from eBay and got it working again and picked up "Fighting street". I can definitely see why the CD unit would have been quite the hard pill to swallow at the price point it originally released at. Not to mention "Fighting street" is a pretty rough game. Perhaps if it had been SF2, the CD unit may have been a bit more enticing, even at the higher price point.
funny thing is that in Japan, the PC engine got an almost perfect port of Street fighter 2 on a turbo card. BTW, I find your avatar hilarious.
I had one as a kid (and still own it) and it was given to me as a xmas present. I only ever saw it advertised once and hardly anyone at school knew about it. So what killed the Lynx? A lack of advertising and there wasn't a game in the catalogue that was similar to Mario or Sonic the Hedgehog. But the biggest killer was the lack of games compared to the Game Boy which everyone at school knew about.
I agree. That thrid party support was not good, and the battery life didn't help!
It's because Bradley did a poor job of selling it to Billy's dad.
ow cat lady~ i remember finding this game thanks to manly back in the day and fell in love with the trilogy~
very underrated, and tackledissues in a serious manner. Was really caught by surprise by this set of games.
This game was on a plug and play console I used to have several years ago from around 2008, would you happen to know what that plug and play console was or who made it? I've been looking for it for a couple years now
I have no idea. Sorry. I wasn't even aware of this until you mentioned it. Try going to reddit and posting it on retrogaming. Pretty sure someone there will know.
@gamingquarterly6353 I did, that's how I learned that the game I remembered was Recca. Thank you for your response though!
The Cat Lady is a game that sticks in your mind for YEARS later. Some mornings I wake up still thinking about lines or scenes from the game. Like, "I slept through the night and most of the day, but I'm still so tired." So glad to see it get some more love <3
It's almost like watching a set of movies. Many intepretations and angles to look at these games from, and that adds to the charm.
I watched a play through of Downfall and the Cat Lady having no idea that they were by the same creator or related. I fell in love with the soundtrack but forgot the name of the games. I thought the story was a fever dream I had for the LONGEST
Man, love some pc exclusive games that I don't get to play cause I am only a console player. Thanks bro 👍🏼
expect a bit more PC games down the road. I will still concentrate on consoles, but trying to give the PC games some love too.
the cat lady is one of my favorite games 😭 i played it years ago when i definitely didn’t understand the concepts of marriage and mental health. i’m glad i saw this video!
The storylines in these titles really took me by surprise. Anyone out there even heard of any of these games? Anyone recommend any similar titles out there?
Great video and fab recommendations 👍😊
Man, that PT that never became reality is a real loss. Thanks for the great video my dude 👍🏼

The short lifespan of the Lynx? The Atari Lynx is still alive and and kickin' at the ripe old age of 35 years. Long Live the Lynx, especially if yours has a BennVenn IPS LCD upgrade like mine! I also bought a brand new screen lens, upgraded speaker, and USB 9v adapter for my model 2 from K-Retro.
I still have my turbo duo and I love it
I wanted to get my hands on a turboDuo after I sold my Turbo16, but they were hard to find and the ones I did find, were expensive.
This were disturbing games in a very nice way 😅👍🏼
What are some of the scariest rom hacks or fan made games you have played or heard about?

ur mum is forgot
Fab review of a top game. A gem.
I had the Lynx growing up. I have some fond memories but honestly? Was only really Chips Challenge which stands out in my mind, that game was really great and easily the best version. The Lynx had the same issue as the Game Gear really. The screen was blurry as heck making it really hard to see, and it used far too many batteries. The Gameboy succeeding despite being worse spec wise seems quite the norm for Nintendo in hindsight.
since you owned one, what, in your opinion, caused the lynx to fail?
@@gamingquarterly6353 Probably the same reason as most rival handhelds failed in comparison, Nintendo just dominated the market and had a much more robust library of games / affordability. I don't recall ever seeing Atari Lynx advertised but seeing Gameboy ads was common. It was just pure chance I even knew the Lynx existed at all. I never knew anyone else who owned one. But in regards to the Game Gear, whenever mentioned back then it was usually met with discussions about how bad the battery life was. I'd presume a similar discussion surrounded the Lynx. So in short, lack of marketing, lack of games, and excessive battery use.
Wtf ware is street of rage
Streets of Rage came out in 1991, so it's mentioned on part 2 of this series.
My older brother didn't care about consoles anymore, when he got his first PC in 1994. I only could use his PC during the weekend, when he went outside with his friend the evening. Games like Doom, Heretic.
I remember the doom revolution of that time. playing with my friends over Qmodem was something that was mind blowing at the time.
It was personally good that the Sega CD was not so great and the Sega 32X failed. My childhood friend with his parent$$$. He got both consoles when newly released 😂 However, he was not really angry, his parent$$$ got him a Sega Saturn next, the little rich kid bastard 🤣
No one, in my circle of friends and in my class at school, had that console hehehe
very small user base, even for that time. People look back at it now as some sort of unknown holy grail, but it really shines with the Turbo CD titles. not all, but there are some that are still great to play.
180!!!!!

Really want this one but them prices are high up for this one 😅 and as a collector I really want a physical copy. Thanks bro 👍🏼
Problem is, stupid TH-camrs keep bringing attention to these games and affects pricing. Oh...wait...crap.

Neither did I and I saw someone commented on this game over in reddit and I had to try it. it is very slow in terms of pacing, but it is interesting.
