SledTred Knee Pads for the catalyst
One of the things that's popular for almost all rider-forward snowmobiles is a good set of knee pads. There's a company in Oregon that has a massive catalog of knee pad designs for nearly every make and model, and I decided to give them a try. Today, I'll show you what you can get and also how to install them.

Bought a set too! Just waiting for the trails to open in Northern Wisconsin.
Looks like you could use a scissor type sled lift . No more breaking your back by bending over,. Mine is from Ohio Chassis. Many brands out there.
@@jimt4906 Yes, I do! We’re building a garage next summer and will be looking at a few additional tools for my shop.
Ive got the Ice Arrow on mine . Cant wait to see how it hooks up. Looks way better than the older Ice ripper.
@@jimt4906 I’ve heard of that track and would be interested in your opinion of it. Looking forward to a great season!
I am so blessed. My friend has a riggers license and he taught me how to secure loads properly. I'm not as well versed as he is but learned a lot from his tuteledge. Its a real skill set to master rigging a load and will serve you for a lifetime. The State Police that cover trucking on the highway can and will stop you if they see any violations. For instance did you know it is a law to cross your safety chains? If you know what to look for you can spot some violations your self while driving on the highway. For instance you will see trailers angled upward and too far downward . Those loads are a danger to anyone around them . Most trailers except horse trailers should be level to the tow vehicle. Those straps are nice and strong but not for that application. Go to Harbor Freight and get yourself some "Over the wheel tie down Bonnets." They go over the wheel like the car haulers have. 3300 lb. working load and 24 bucks each. With the cleats you can purchase that go in the tracks you have in the bed they will cinch down tighter than you can imagine . On mine I think its 5,000lbs. Now you can turn that trailer upside down and that General won't move an inch! The way you center the General or any other load for that matter is based solely on tongue weight and not so much over the axle like you mentioned . Over the axle is a rough guess. You correctly stated 10% to 15% is the normal tongue weight . How I test for that on smaller trailers is by trying to lift it off the ball. If I struggle really hard then its close. On the larger trailers I use a floor jack and see how the tongue reacts when I jack it up. And depending on the tow vehicle the proper drop of the hitch to make it level is is also important . After a while you will get the feel for things. Also another thing most folks dont know is blow up the trailer tires to their maximum PSI rating. You will be surprised how well the trailer reacts to that one simple step. Great thread . Keep it coming. Hope this helps, Happy trails
So if I have this G8 on my catalyst and my friend gets a Tread device for his Procross 800 sled…. Can we both link up together on group ride? We want to see each other on the map but would be using different models
@@brianmoczynski5989 Yes, you can - as long as you both have the group ride option. You can set up one group for any combination of Treads and the G8. If someone doesn't have the group ride option, you can still set up a group, but need to do it on the Tread app on your phone. Since you have the G8 paired to your phone, you'll see the group on your map screen, even if you use the cellular-based group ride.

Does the long track affect the top end speed?
That's a great question. Based on the difference between my Riot 8000 and a comparable ProCross ZR 8000, I lose 5-10mph on the top end to the ZR. The Riots are all geared a little differently than their ZR counterparts, and that includes the 9000-series sleds. The track length and taller lugs of the Riot would have a modest effect on top speed, but give you an edge on acceleration. The gearing is also a bit better for acceleration.
Pulley mounted upside-down
@@brianreimert1406 Good catch - you're talking about the fairlead pulley, correct? I installed it that way originally, because of the sharp angle when I hooked to the plow. Now, it has to stay that way until I decide to replace the bumper. Thanks for pointing that out.
Did it matter which direction the pins and screws that hold the flyweight are oriented
@@derekkingma8484 In my opinion, no, as long as they’re all oriented in the same direction.
It's sad that Arctic Cat has suspended production indefinitely today and Textron is exploring strategic alternatives for their powersports business. I hope the company can be sold off as one unit and they don't end up selling it off in pieces. As of now, it looks like a 2026 model line may very well not happen. Very sad development.
@@yamajammer76 My thoughts, as well.

How much you spent on your sled? Now the winters are less and less and snowmachines are more and more expensive
@@edwardabrahamiii3742 This year, my expenses have been higher than normal, because I wanted to see the full potential of the Catalyst. I’m generally more conservative.
Excellent video. Just picked one up.
Hi good evening, After you installed your G8 are you getting a U0155 code? Mine gives me that code when i turn off my sled and restart it every time. 3 other Catalyst 600 that have installed a G8 are doing the same thing. I was wondering if yours is giving you the same code.
@@AdirondackRiders No, I have not seen that code. My owners manual says it’s a loss of communication of the instrument cluster. Maybe it’s a problem with the connection plug? If you pull it apart, make sure all the pins are the same length and none of them are bent. Does the display power up and appear to work correctly, for the most part?
@ Yes it’s a loss in communication on the start up, but once the engine is running the wrench and code both go away. But once the G8 is powered up the display works as it should. My sled is at the dealership being looked at. We found out at the dealership that all the Catalyst 600 that had the G8 installed is giving the same code U0155 and goes out after 20-25 seconds after the G8 display powers up. Yes all pins on the plugs were all in place. I will keep you posted on what the dealership finds out why it’s giving this code, in case you experience this. Scott from @AdirondackRiders

Great point!
We use the Cardo Packtalk Bold radios. Have been good to us for years. I can pair the phone to my G8 so should be able to send and receive calls. Teamgreen
Perfect!
Evening. Do I need to have a Garmin acct. to pair my phone with the Tread app to my AC G8? it asks me that. Thanks
I believe you do, yes.
Great beginner Tutorial. Cant wait to set mine up. Questions: 1) What advantage is the pairing of the phone with the Garmin? 2) Can you set a destination with the phone and upload to the Garmin similar to a Google maps? 3) What advantage is the set function of "fuel level" if you have it already permanently installed on the right hand side? A brief history of our way finding: We ride in Canada a lot and the paper map which gave great 10,000 foot views of where we were going. Always a problem to unfold the map on a windy snowy day made that our go to for many years. The map also made everything look easy as far as turns go but when we ride it can get confusing with route direction. Torn maps lost maps and waterlogged maps made this very problematic so it had to go. The last five or so years we have been using our Smartphones with downloaded maps on a pod mounted on the dash. It had a charger cord and heater to keep the phone on and clear all day. It was a good setup that employed a touch screen but due to its small size there was a lot of futzing around typically with our gloves off. Those issues coupled with removing the phone during lunch breaks paved the way for the next generation of way finding the G8 by Garmin. Our riding partners have the Polaris with the 7S display and I must admit they had way more answers about where to turn next than we did. That system is the bomb and everyone gathered around them to see where we were and where we were going . I hope the G8 knocks them off the top of the heap. Thanks, Teamgreen
@@jimt4906 Thanks for your comments! I’m not sure I can answer all of your questions, but will try. There are a couple of advantages to pairing your phone. One is that you can get text messages and other notifications on your screen. If someone texts you, you’ll be notified, kind of like having a smart watch. I think you can send and receive phone calls, as well, but you’d need to set up a Bluetooth helmet for that. I’m not planning to use my Delta V Commander with the G8, so it’s probably not something I will play with. The other advantage of pairing your phone is that you can use the Tread app to set waypoints, plan trips and save navigation data from your G8. I have not played with this yet, but plan to. One final advantage of pairing your phone: You can use the Tread app with other riders to set up a group ride. If you ride in areas where there is cell coverage, the app is free and everyone in your group can use it. If you pair your phone to the G8, you can see the group ride on your display, even though you’re using the app to communicate with other riders. I think that answers your first 2 questions. As far as your question about setting up what info to display, there is no advantage to displaying fuel level. I think there are better things to display. I added Trip1, because I use that to determine fuel stops. I added coolant temp on the map screen, because I like keeping track of that, and having the temp on both screens is very helpful to me. I agree with you on the 7S. From what I understand, Polaris acquired a GPS company and their product became Ride Command. we have Ride Command on our General and it is awesome, it has been well worth the money. That’s why I jumped at the chance to buy the G8 for my Catalyst as soon as my dealer had the kit. The G8 is a super clear screen and for people who are familiar with Garmin GPS, it’s quite easy to use. I’m very enthused about the G8! Let me know if you have other questions, and I’ll try to answer them. I’ll do as many videos as I can on the G8 to help people learn how to use it.
That is great information to know!
I wouldn’t do it!!!!!! I’ve had bad experiences with SSI & BDX!!! Cylinders they port and bore the nickel comes apart. I’ve bought thousands with them. They need to stop throwing stuff in a box to make a money. Inspect your work.
Very informative
I use a Tech Vest. 5 years ago I was ejected off my machine. Through some miracle, I missed at least 10 trees. Ever since then, I dont ride unless I have it on. There are also way more new riders or dumb riders on the wrong side of the trail the last few seasons.
Thank you! A lot of people mainly focus on their own riding decisions to determine if they're riding "safe". However, I agree with you - around every corner could be someone on your side of the trail. I've had a few close calls, and it makes me more vigilant.
It looks like they would impede cooling?
That has crossed my mind, and I don't know the answer. I'm assuming the coolant is running down the center of the heat exchanger. If that's true, then the extra aluminum might act like a bigger heat sink. Or, maybe it does impede cooling, but not enough to notice. I don't know, that's a very interesting point.
Just seems like newer artic cats over heat pretty quick on hard pack or low snow. Had to add ice catchers on my 2 cats
Thanks for your video. You are a good teacher. You know... Many times I was thinking of installing studs on my sled. Great traction on lake ice and great traction on ice covered groomed trails as well. Then, I realize no more sliding sideways on the sharp corners and other "fun slides" (when I want to). And, the studs will chew up my shop's cement floor as well... Think I will continue to use my sled's factory non-studded track. Smiles.
Thanks! The majority of my riding has been on sleds without studded tracks. I go back and forth on them, and I can understand why you'd want to stick with an unstudded track. If a rider uses their brain, it's not a generally a problem. A famous aviator once, said, "know you airplane's limitations and your own, and never exceed either one".
Wow you have over 1,000 subscribers 🎉
You probably don't have the sled anymore but the fix is drill the secondary belt adjustment hole out and put the deflection adjustment bolt back in like the older team clutches had and problem goes away.
@@cmnsnce2408 Great info! I do still have the sled, will look into that.
@ponycarfan some more info you might like, due to the Arctic cat clutch recall i didn't get the recall done because they wanted to drill a bunch of holes in my belly pan and I think side panels so i ended up putting a pb80 clutch on and I just rode it yesterday up in grayling and that clutch is hands down better than the stock cat clutch. Take off and shifting is smooth as butter, top end shift out very consistent compared to stock. 19 zr 8000 is what I have. Anyway lol
I will never buy a snowmobile with electric start.
@@NockNArrow I can understand that. Even with a lithium battery, there’s still a weight penalty. If you’re going to take it off, it makes no sense to pay for it.
I'm waiting for the retro kit to install on the 998's. I'm guessing they will be live with just the key on, engine off.
Just installed my G8 today. Fired up the sled and let it do its thing. Linked the wifi to the house and down loaded the app to my phone and linked that also. Just have to do the updates and will be good to go. Think I will leave the USB were it is and power it up with an extension cord. Okay idea for easy access.

Will this work if I have the Atac shocks?
@@383cutlass8 Great question! Yes, it will. The ATAC settings are built into the G8 display. The wiring harness is the same, as well. During the Catalyst photo shoot (before we knew about the G8), the engineers told me that the plug for the display was the same for the Deluxe Digital gauge (ATAC for 2024) and the new Sport gauge. Therefore, all 2024-25 Catalysts are compatible with the G8.

@@yamajammer76 The sticker price is intimidating! I agree, it's not for everyone, and I hope the price goes down over time. To be honest, the Garmin Tread app is not at the same level as OnX. I plan on keeping the OnX Off-road app for snowmobile trails, because it's a lot more useful.
@ponycarfan Yeah the standard gauge is good enough for me along with trail maps and onX offroad on my phone. However, I really enjoy your videos and it was fun to watch you install the gauge. Will there be a part two?

Is there any worry about having to rebalance the entire clutch with the new ( although balanced) cover on? Considering that the original clutch cover was indexed and balanced with the entire clutch but the new has not, it would seem that it could set the entire balance off.
@@danielgailis5700 That’s a great question, and one I didn’t address in the video. I agree that the clutch was balanced originally with the cover on and asked Thunder Products about that and they said they have no concerns about the balance. My new Catalyst came with it. So far I have quite a few issues with it. The UI as usual is sub-par because everything Garmin makes has a crap UI. I don't like how the ATAC shocks work (again, very poor UI). I haven't found a way to set the maps to top-down rather than 3D. And since the thing won't power on unless you start the sled (even with electric start) it's not like I can play with it.
@@robgoffroad Yeah, I have asked them for a way to power the unit without starting the engine and am told there's currently no way to do it. As far as I can tell, the G8 internal battery is good for about an hour at full backlight and you can set the auto shutoff for up to 30 minutes. But, you have to start the engine to get it powered on. I'm disappointed that you couldn't change 3D to top down, and will investigate. On the ATAC, have you had that before? I have found it a little confusing, especially at first. That applies to the previous display, imo.
@@robgoffroad I have not powered up my G8 yet, but looking at the way all Garmins appear to work, and looking back on this video footage, I think it's consistent. When displaying the map, there's an up arrow on the right. Touch the arrow, and that should give you the option for 2D north up, 2D direction up or 3D. Next time you start the sled, change auto shutoff to 30 minutes, then display the map and give that a try. If I get to mine before you do, I'll let you know what I find out.
@@ponycarfan I went out there and fired up the sled to power up the unit, then shut down the sled. I played around a bit but could not find out how to set the timeout. I DID find out that you CAN set the map to top-down view and where north is always up, just the way I like it. So that much is good. It says its battery is only at 36% and so the only way to charge it is to run the sled. Grrr. I was reading the manual and it says break in is in two stages -- Stage 1 is 18 minutes with a lot of extra oil, Stage 2 is three hours with more oil than normal, but not as much as Stage 1. So I don't want to just idle the thing wasting time for Stage 1 of break-in. I still can't believe Cat couldn't be bothered to tie this thing to the sled's battery.
