17-years-old and suicidal?
If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts and their mental health, this video is for you. We'll talk about all things mental health, suicidal ideation and prevention, psychiatric drugs, therapy, and psych diagnosis and hospitalization. Know, you are not alone.
"Psychiatric Survivor" is a new series on this channel featuring stories of incredibly resilient, strong, and courageous individuals that have been tremendously impacted while navigating through the conventional mental health system.
It's their harrowing journey of being diagnosed with a "mental disorder", then hospitalized (voluntarily or involuntarily) and medicated, and surviving adverse effects and harm to psychiatric treatment. The denial of harm in psychiatry is absolutely staggering. But this is the lived experience of those who have been disenfranchised and disempowered by psychiatry. You can judge for yourself.
Our first guest is Lori Daniels.
Lori Daniels was born in Kansas City, Kansas USA in 1966. At 58, she is currently living in San Diego County, CA. She is disabled with brain damage from long-term subjection to psychotropic drugs for nearly 40 years. She was featured on the PBS aired documentary, "Just Anxiety" by Susan Polis Schutz: th-cam.com/video/PxuM-WgotHw/w-d-xo.html.

"Non-compliant" is often given to people who refuse to stay on these drugs to awful and horrific effects. Psychiatrist just won't accept the fact that some people cannot tolerate their drug "treatment". And if nothing works for this person without giving them horrible effect and they refuse to stay one them, then they're told they are non-compliant. Why would a person who is greatly benefiting from these drugs would want to get off of them?

Ben’s comment about how in some respects it is somewhat easier for some family members to believe that just taking the drugs will kind of make things better. So we should just encourage sedation of our loved ones to make it “easier” for those of us living with and dealing with someone who is just struggling with “mental health issues”…. It is the big lie … the big psychiatric lie in my opinion. This is a global problem they want us to just take a pill and everything will all just go away … we are lied to by the psychiatric system as a whole….are loved ones are being damaged by long term use of all of these psychiatric drugs and never are offered any alternatives. It is a very very sinister area of medicine regrettably but very profitable by big pharma… creating life time customers for pharmaceutical companies of multiple drugs.

Yes, and this at the cost of a life devastated! Both for the patient and families that have to witness their loved ones in constant struggle - in and out of hospitals, trialed on cocktails of drugs, chemically lobotomized, and with a potential for permanent damage. It's awful what people have to endure in the name of "mental health help". It would be one thing if these drugs actually helped, but for majority of people they create a lot more problems than they began with. What's the value of a person's life? Is one life altered forever enough? Thousands? Millions? What is it going to take for people to wake up?

Let’s be very clear: the only thing psychiatrists have is power. They are prison wardens dressed up as doctors. They DO NOT examine brains or “brain chemistry.” There is no physical evidence that feeling a certain way ipso facto means there is something wrong with your brain. In addition, communication that we don’t understand, dislike, or can’t decode is not evidence of brain disease. Human conflict is not a disease. Thanks for this video and letting me comment. ❤

That's the irony. The "brain doctors" who never look at the brain or have any scientific backing on even the basics of diagnosing. They have to rely on subjective data and a Bible/DSM which was concocted by a group of select highly privileged individuals who voted disorders in to this ridiculous book. It's no different than religious zealotry.

It is definitely that the prescriber is responsible! But just like my mother was responsible for my step father’s abuse just by standing by in (albeit in a dissociative state)-so are all mental health providers who cannot legally prescribe. Unless you’re speaking out publicly &/or speaking to your own patients & fully informing people about these drugs you are an enabler and you are responsible because these are your patients too. Just like my mother, no matter what her situation, she was responsible for me. You may be fired by your boss just like my mom would have been punished by her husband nonetheless she chose to be a mother and you chose to be a mental health provider. It’s a responsibility not to be taken lightly.

I’ve lost everything 4 years now polydrugged and numerous life attempts. One does not go through 4 decades of their life intact and develop all of this out of the blue. Sure I had issues I carried from childhood which likely led to some certain skewy beliefs or choices, but it was live, learn, grow. I don’t think I will survive this. I saw a comment which was profound in this situation.. “ invalidation is life threatening “

      @NeseretBemient 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

I'm so sorry for your losses. Situational means that it is totally normal to react to stress and trauma given the circumstances you find yourself in. However, that's not the way it is seen in psychiatry. It's a cause for medicating. There could be so many other options that could be explored before ever going to drugs. And even if drugs were part of the treatment then they should be used in acute crisis only and then helped to deprescribe and taper safely.

I am so sick and I had no idea what was going to me when clonazepam is forcibly stopped. In and out of the hospital 6 times and I know that every single doctor that I've seen knows what is happening to me but won't document it because then I would have a case for malpractice! The doctors protect each other. They wouldn't do this to themselves ! He'll on earth. I can't believe what they have done to me. I can't take this anymore. Another danger is the peer pressure and assumptions about psych meds floating around. The assumption is they are good for you, neural or “side effects.” Direct primary unnecessary harmful effects don’t exist in the conversation. I took my med because I was curious and was people the psych trait thinking I shouldn’t waste appointments without getting and taking meds. The problem is I am easily influenced and defer to the doctor’s authority and am too shy to speak to them and stand up for what I think. I told my Harvard trained lgbt zonked out girl psychiatrist that I would rather not take SSRIs due to sexual side effects and she went ahead and said “Well the only one left is Lexapro and it’s the first line of treatment, I will prescribe it if you want. Up to you.” I took it. Started acting erratically. Stopped it. Started insulting people. Got fired evicted sued and traumatized people and alienated family. Thanks to this one pill my brain and emotional intelligence are damaged and sexuality permanently reduced. I got the opposite of qualified advice, and don’t get education about safely tapering or what to expect. I was never a candidate to take it because I can’t take pills every day due to forgetting and being impulsive and disorganized. I got the impression that not taking was up to me but she didn’t say it was a valid option. Two appointments made a harmless chronic problem into a life altering acute one.

I'm sorry to hear what you went through. Many people are trained to submit to authority. That's how most human beings are socialized and so when it comes to mental health - it's not uncommon to trust a "specialist". The issue around informed consent is huge. Many unsuspecting souls are told these drugs are "safe" and "well tolerated" and they come to find out that is not the case. And for some coming off of these drugs is going to be where they experience the most brutal withdrawal symptoms, including some that are permanent. It's a terrible predicament.

Many people are given drugs when there are a plethora of other options to explore before reaching for a drug. Psychiatrist are two quick to diagnose and medicate. One area that's utterly inappropriate is medicating grief. The drug almost always numb the feelings and people are unable to be in touch with their emotions. I've heard people tell me they can't even cry if they want to because their emotions are so blunted. There is no way through grief but through - you can't medicate it away. Similarly, many people who have significant history of trauma are diagnosed medicated. Again, they also need to grieve their pain, suffering, and loss. It's a normal response to abnormal circumstances.

@@NeseretBemient I mean okay I presented depressed but this literally how the conversation went with a Harvard trained psychiatrist: “Should I take antidepressants? I tried two and didn’t like them. I don’t want to take an SSRI because it can reduce my sex drive” She says, “Well you tried all the others, so SSRI is the only one left. If you want to take it, I will prescribe it. It’s up to you. Lexapro is the first line of treatment.” So she ignored my preference against SSRIs and delegated prescribing to me pretty much. Then she opened the textbook and said “Starting dose is 10 mg”. Then after a month or two, she told me “If you are still depressed then we increase to 20mg.” Why wasn’t I started on the lower dose and tapered up slowly by 5 mg? Why go to maximum dose right away? How come no advice on stopping very slowly and what might happen if I don’t and no advice to watch for manic behavior? As an autistic I already had a tendency to venture out of the socially normal behavior. This med made my behavior so inappropriate that I got fired evicted and sued and don’t talk to family anymore. wtf? How is this qualified advice? It’s like mal-advice! She also looked zonked out like she was on meds herself. She advertises this on her website: “compassionate, socioculturally informed, and personalized mental health care, including psychotherapy and medication management. I believe in a collaborative approach to care, offering a space for self-reflection, vulnerability, and building insight. I nurture a warm, supportive, nonjudgmental space for you to share your story, and for us to work together toward your goals.” I feel like the intention is there but the advice is not very qualified. I then went to a young black therapist with untied Nike shoes (because he worked in a mostly addiction clinic) who threw a fit about me stopping antidepressants and told me he is better than me because he works out and is stronger then said I should just decide to change or not come back. I seriously don’t remember how I took the meds. I think I may have stopped the Lexapro before him or maybe it was the antidepressant I took before him briefly. I seriously feel like my mind is half erased. I had a good career with free housing and just needed to learn new habits. I was putting away $2,000 a month toward savings and more. On and off Lexapro I told my coworker “it is time for him to retire if he can’t do his job” and sent an email to my boss cc’ing everyone else telling her “she is stupid and her job can be replaced by software.” I somehow thought this was worth the risk and forgivable. It’s like I got BPD and mania all at the same time from stopping Lexapro. I was never like that before. Fleeting thoughts turned into impulses I didn’t have the patience to stop and just took them as far as my mind carried me. I can’t believe I was able to keep my other job. They wrote me up and transferred to a different department. Now I have guilt about getting people fired at work and don’t have the confidence to get in the groove of life. I was working as a nursing home registered nurse and a coordinator in an elderly complex. And the weird thing that my mania and rudeness only extended to safe people like coworkers and boss and obviously not to patients or tenants. And the weird thing is that everything I made a fuss about was correct - elevator trapping people with malfunctioning door that wouldn’t retract, washing machine leaking into unit below which wasn’t fixed when they looked at it, elderly people having to drag clothing to laundry when it was icy outside because washing machines weren’t replaced for two weeks. Like small triggers made take it way too far. And I started wearing my autism on my sleeve and triggering people agrees against me. Like a CPTSD addict.

AFTER A PSYCHIATRIST TRIED TO MURDER ME...I started to realize that this 'profession' is PURE EVIL! It relies on a FALSE 'abnormal psychology' paradigm...whereby anything outside the 'norm' is considered as mental illness instead of a unique adaptation to unique circumstances. The 'medical model' of an 'organic imbalance' in brain chemistry is also PATENTLY FALSE, but allows them to diagnose LIKE REAL DOCTORS...and prescribe deadly medications for profit! Empathy and true understanding of mental illness is NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN LEARN FROM A BOOK...Nor does a book give you insight into others' unique circumstances and adaptations. I said that a psychiatrist tried to murder me...AND THIS DID HAPPEN...after my MEDIA-COVERED HUNGER-STRIKE FOR MEDICAL CANNABIS....I was WITHDRAWN COLD-TURKEY FROM A HIGH DAILY DOSE OF 'XANAX'...TAKEN FOR 11 YEARS STRAIGHT.....THEN I WAS WITHDRAWN IN ONE DAY! I was devastated physically, emotionally and financially....BY ONE OF THE MOST WICKED HUMAN BEING I EVER MET! Her name is Dr. Elizabeth Ann Lock..of the Cumberland Mental Health Clinic in Amherst Nova Scotia, Canada. I have enough evidence to prove what she did....but the college of physicians in N.S. IGNORED IT AND COVERED FOR HER. Psychiatry is a false science in clinical practice.

I am somewhat reluctant to comment about so-called spiritual perspectives on mental health/illness as a journey through life experiencing which is front and centre for genuine caring connection within the context of my family’s situation. Incidentally, your recent kindly reply to my comments was warmly received. In searching for wisdom apart from the mainstream illness-centric sources, different approaches may emerge to influence your motivational interest. In my case, I have found that the teachings of Jiddu Krishnamurti relate directly and indirectly with the lived experiences from the caring viewpoint that fits appropriately with ‘what is’ happening day to day. The term ‘spiritual’ is used sparingly by psychiatric practitioners, mainly to describe religiosity pertaining to various organised religions and institutions. The usual clinical approach asks participants to make journal entries of their experiences and to have follow up discussion with their personal mental health practitioner. This approach is not suitable to myself because I haven’t sought outside professional advice. Apart from my own inquiries into being a light to myself, I participate in Krishnamurti dialogues with others who have similar interests in this regard. Now, the focus is on the whole of livingness which in its distillation is ‘religious freedom’ which is not religious practice whatsoever. Looking at your screen image, there’s shining ‘light’ emanating in your eyes and face, Neseret. Holistically, there are three fundamental principles that are important criteria for my attention: no conflict, remaining with ‘what is’ and non-action in lieu of re-action. It’s not as simple as a walk in the park, but it’s essence invites the vast cosmic ‘unknown’, not aligned with the limited ‘known’ that pervades the man-made conditioned world. For what it’s worth, obliquely!

Wise advice! Hard to do! But like most hard things I bet the rewards are great!
