Compression test should be made with a warm engine. Run it in idle until it gets warmed up and then make the compression test.

Cold water first of all enters the exhaust manifold, then it goes to the cylinders' heads where thermostats start opening quite soon allowing water to show at the telltale. As I've seen at the service manual poppet valve allowing water to flow around the cylinders to exit towards the lower unit doesn't start opening until rpm go over 1500.

Is that an original tiller for that motor? I don’t think I’ve ever even seen a tiller 40 of that vintage before. Very sick motor, man. Looks good and damn does that cowl help with the volume. Nice set up!

Did I screw up the timing ?

Before I cleaned the 3 carbs it ran great now installed and screw the idle so the motor rpm would lows down at idle... now a top speed its got no power and I get 10 mph maximum ???? 90hp merc 1989

both the spark advance and cam rollers need to be repaired or replaced. gotta know what the original outer diameter was i believe the cam roller is 5/8. it idles horribly inconsistent, low and on 1 cyl sounds like to me! very clean motor. squirt premix into each carb throat see if its fuel or ignition. cheers.

Tell Tail water flow for most 2 stroke mercury motors takes around 1-3 minutes on Muffs on idle when flushing to appear. Needs the engine hot for the thermostat to do it's job, In this video very normal no flow for a bit.

Sounds like it isnt running 100 percent on 2 cyls

You need to do a cylinder drop test on that bad boy (pull one plug wire at a time & compare how it reacts at idle) .....One cylinder sounds weak to me.

I got one of these and a 9.8 from the same year. The 98 is gonna be my kicker for restricted lakes. 1989 17 ft tracker i gutted and am rebuilding. I know the motor runs i just havent been able to really test it out yet

Those late 1980’s through the early 2000’s were called the no primer motors they got so cheap towards the end and stopped making them good I have a 1994 evinrude 25 freshwater only but it needed water pump primer pull start rope and new motor mounts it runs great I coat my motors with fluid film

What are you using for two cycle oil I use Pennzoil from Walmart semi synthetic $18.00 a gallon on my 25 Check your motor mounts common problem they break
