A lot of the songs on the Quake soundtrack sound like they are paced to breathing. In my opinion, this is one of the top three deeply sad instrumental songs from Nine Inch Nails. Anyone who has ever been in a very dark place in their life and their mind, can feel the despair in this song

Even though most of Quake's OST is ambient, what I appreciate is that there is a clear idea of progression and action with this track specifically, it plays on the last levels of every episode, and most of these times these levels in particular are designed to be hard and tactical quad rampages. My favorite execution of this was in that one castle (general statement by Quake standards but please bear with me.) where you start with an invisibility powerup, one of two things you can do is get a jump on the vore down the first couple of corridors, or you can sneak all the way through and pick up some goodies deeper within which you can use to basically wipe the whole level. This captures that feeling of sneaking in and preparing a devastating counter attack to knock Shubb's spawn down a peg.
