HDX Tote Storage Rack | DIY Floating Tote Rack
I built this HDX tote storage rack to open up some space in my basement and get these totes up and off of the floor. This DIY floating tote storage rack was very easy to build and makes getting the contents out of the totes much easier than just stacking them. the whole project cost me around 600$ but you can likely cut some costs by using smaller material for the floating shelves.
Instructions on how to build and material list are below:
Cut List:
12-88" long (vertical posts)
4 110" long (horizontal posts)
50- 28" long (shelves)
6 - 21" long (support between walls front to back)
5 - 20" long (support between walls side to side)
Instructions:
- Once your materials are cut you want to build the two frames first. I used a 20" spacer between each frame to make sure they were wide enough and put 2 3" screws into each end of each board. double check that the boxes fit between each stud.
- Second after both frames were built stand them up vertically and screw in the 21" supports on all 4 corners and in the middle. I used pocket holes to make this easier.
- Third after the supports are added front to back you'll want to add the 20" supports side to side along the back wall to prevent the frame from racking under the weight of the full totes. Double check that the boxes still fit between each stud
- Fourth put in the bottom shelves using a 10 1/2 inch spacer block. These blocks will make sure that the wood is supported on both ends when you are screwing them in. I used 2 2 1/2" screws on each board.
-Fifth I screw in the rest of the shelves using a 13 1/2" spacer between each shelf.
- Sixth move your rack to the desired location and screw it to your floor joists or existing wall studs. I have 8 foot ceilings in my basement and needed 1 1/2" cleats on the floor and 1 1/2" boards on top to fill the gap and effectively secure the rack to my floor joists.
- Fill your rack with your HDX totes and enjoy!

      That’s highly dependent on a lot of factors but in general it’ll remain warm, especially if it’s in a sock, for 2-3 hours.

      I mean they are 2x4s. This is basically the same method that is used to build your homes walls so it’s pretty darn strong. I also screwed mine into the joists so I could hang on them with all the boxes full on the wall and it doesn’t budge.

    An easier way would be to make it 4ft tall put legs on one side and turn the screen at a 45° angle, the larger material will stay on the outside and smaller material falls inside. I screened my backyard this way. Throw it hard at the screen.

    • @steveofalltrades816
      @steveofalltrades816 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally I’d turn this into a floating table that I could shake any rocks and material out but since space is a constraint this was the route I went.

    the rat in my greenhouse keeps licking off the stuff for the bait and not setting off the trap. I wanted to make sure I was doing it right by watching this video. Been trying to get the buggerr for over a week. I don't like killing animals but I wanted a trap that killed them swiftly. You're right about glue traps.

    • @steveofalltrades816
      @steveofalltrades816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending on the trap, I prefer the metal trigger. There is a little hole in the front of the trigger. I typically stuff that and the curled piece with super dry natural peanut butter or fluff. They require some pressure to eat and trigger the trap easier.

      I used hard cat food and a hot glue gun to stick to plate. Worked first time 20mins after baiting.

    • @SkittlesBoris
      @SkittlesBoris 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peanut butter is too lickable as bait. I've hot glued a pretzel to the bait tray with really good results. The salt is addictive and they can't stop. You can use some sticky candy too. Use hot glue to make sure the rat can't run away with the bait.

    When your following the contour of the knife and have to lift the handle up are you still keeping blade flush against the angle guide?

    • @steveofalltrades816
      @steveofalltrades816 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Otherwise the angle would not be consistent across the belly and the tip of the blade. At some point your blade is going to no longer touch the angle guide while you pull it through so you’ll need to maintain that angle yourself. I suggest maintaining light pressure against the angle guide so when you are no longer touching the guide your angle isn’t thrown off. Also remember to stop the blade tip at the middle of the belt so you don’t round the tip over.

    • @steveofalltrades816
      @steveofalltrades816 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      On the traps with the brass trigger, the ray trap in this example, there is a very small dent on the inside of the part of the trigger arm that points upward. For the plastic ones, mouse trap in this example, there is a shelf on the underside of the trigger that will only latch when it is lifted high enough. Further to the right the trap is more sensitive, further to the left is less.
