VPI TNT Turntable with Eminent Technology ET2 Air Tangent Tonearm - Restoring a Classic Turntable.
Here's a few photos and clips of my old VPI TNT MKI turntable, with the classic Eminent Technology ET2 tonearm.
This is a vintage turntable and tonearm package that holds its own against many modern turntables, at least in the $3,000 to $5,000 range.
Restoring these old VPI TNT turntables can be problematic, but this was in pretty good condition and needed very little, just a bit of TLC and patience setting up the Eminent Technology tonearm.
So if you can find one of these in good working condition, it's worth the gamble.

Pure Audio Project Review And Discussion With Ze'ev At Capital Audiofest 2022
Nice. I think I would go DPS or maybe Stabi R at that price point.
This is pure gold...cable
The "double-blind study" is not the gold standard if the study design does not meet scientific requirements. This also includes the question of the size of the test group. Accordingly, such studies must be examined for their design and thus peer-reviewed. Let's make it short? There is not a single study on cable sound that meets these requirements. However, there are enough basic explanations in physics as to why cables cannot influence the sound of a loudspeaker signal, as long as cables that are far too small do not meet cables that are too long. There is not a single explanation that is acceptable by physics standards as to why a loudspeaker cable costing 5,000 euros should sound different or even better than a cable costing 300 euros. The whole thing takes place in the field of psychology and the disciples of the golden ear have now retreated to defiant foot-stamping.
They do sound different. And some differences in materials can not be "measured". Audio note uses some pure copper and pure silver in their transformers and the same amp with the different transformers will sound different. One thing people do not understand is that audio cables interfere with the signal path in different ways but they do not "improve" anything regarding the hardware (components) that you have. People do not understand that they can not improve the specs of the amplifier itself or the source or the loudspeaker. You are also not mentioning the fact that you will only start noticing differences in cables if you have a revealing system. People use audio cables as audio filters without understanding that, that is what they are doing. The amplifier will always have its specific output and the speaker will have its own presentation and some speakers do not sound good with some amplifiers. But the person wants that specific speaker and that specific amp and they do not like the sound. So they will try changing the cables to try to solve the initial problem which is that specific amp does not go well with those speakers. So. When they change the cable and think the speaker is no longer as "bright" as it was or the "bass" response changed it is because the cable interfered negatively with the signal path. If you have a set of cables that you know are transparent enough to the signal path you should address the amp or the speaker itself, not the cable. People are using cables as it they were a sort of an "equalizer unit" or a "filter". The cable is not improving the signal, it is damaging it. And I find it amusing, Some years back we went to an audio show to present a series of speakers I redesigned for a loudspeaker manufacturer in Europe. When we got to the audio show, the owner was very worried because he had forgotten the cables for the speakers. We had our own amps but for the show we partnered with a known high end amplifier brand. Ah. And let me get back to the amp in question. They appeared at hour factory with their amps. We tried them and we did not like them. But, the owner of the brand, who was there, agreed with us and spent most of the night changing cars in the amp until we reached a sound we could all agree on. Anyway. As I mentioned above, when we reached the audio show far away from the factory, all of the sudden everyone was worried because the had left the "good cables" at the factory. I told them to relax and that 50 buck in a nearby hardware store would fix the problem. So. I went out and bought a few meters of 6 conductor mains high temperature orange cables. I got some nice plugs and I got a few meters of wool sleeve (you had to hide the cable or you would lose credibility among the cable maniacs). So I used 3 conductors for the negative and 3 conductors for the positive. Along with the wool sleeve I got some black and red Heat-Retractable Sleeves to make the ends of the cable look nicer. Guess what. The sound quality of the system was a hit. We got great reviews on several audio mags and we even got a first prize for one of the models of the speakers. Little did they know we were using mains cable for the speakers. And we eventually tried another two sets of cables from two audio cable companies and, guess what? Our cable sounded way better. I left the company because I just went there to redesign their several sets of speaker cabinets and crossovers (same drivers. Huge improvement) but I am quite sure he is going to make a lot more of those cables. We told everyone they were our own "special cables" made in house. :)
A wire coat hanger will not be audibly different to a cryogenically made $6000 cables for human ears... unless you're a bat and can hear 45khz
I worked for Altec in OKC in 1974 . It was originally University Sound. I was my first union job. I think I was earning $3.85 an hour.
Great writing!
Two subs? Bass is not stereo related signal! 😂😂😂
and thats the bottom line because wife said so..
This looked minty. A great buy for the new owner.
That was a hell of a good buy, I don't think there are going to be very many available for a buck and a quarter. Even at two bills someone got a swinging deal! If you're buying shipped, you will want the og shipping materials, this table will not withstand a cardboard-box-and-foam-peanuts packing job. You NEED a speed control with these VPI (actually Hurst) AC synchronous motors, it's night and day with/without. I was a little surprised to see your first gen. unit still working, they could have reliability issues. Anyway, great post and someone's having a bunch of fun with that deck, tempered with a little frustration with that arm!😉
It's been half a century since Noel Lee started all this infighting by introducing Monster Cable products. In that time there has not been a single credible proof that cables actually change the sound of a system .... not even a single page! Conversely, hundreds of engineers and technicians have demonstrated through various means such as Null Testing and frequency analysis, that they do not. The original comment from Stereophile magazine at the time holds true, even today: _"Noel Lee appears to have found the solution to a problem nobody actually has."_
Okay ... so you propose that on the off chance a cable can, maybe, might make a difference the expense and trouble of trying multiple expensive cables is justified. So, lets put that to bed right now. 1) Given your basic precept that a cable must be suitable in the application ... speaker, interconnect, power, digital cables, etc. ... with which I agree. We can take a simple analogy to common physics: Once you have a chain that is strong enough to tow a car, using a bigger chain does not make that car any easier to tow. That is to say that great giant cables of weight and size threatening to break the connectors off the back of your equipment are not only a fools errand but pose a real risk of damage. 2) In order for a cable to change the sound of a system, it absolutely must alter the electrical signal passing through it in some way. In truth, no cable can ever improve an audio signal, they can only degrade it, which immediately eliminates them by virtue of the first premise. Now... can we test a cable to see if it is indeed changing a signal? Yes we can. Using a dual channel oscilloscope, a dummy load and a signal source, we can monitor the input (a) to the cable and it's output (b) with the scope's inputs at various frequencies, applying an A-B math for a "NULL Test" we can measure the difference between the input and the output. Null tests are particularly useful in this case because they will indiscriminately display _Any and Alll Differences_ including frequency response, noise, loss, phase, waveform, and so on in their math trace. Bottom line... if the signal is not being altered, neither is the sound of your system. 3) If you need proof that people can and do hear differences where there should reasonably be none, check out the phenomenon of "Mid Field Cancellation" which is explained very nicely in this video... th-cam.com/video/T8bmASpUeh0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=l9UDxbmYfMDeXh8g Yes, sitting right in our beloved sweet spot and simply moving your head an inch or two will entirely change what you hear. In fact there are a couple of hundred variables that cannot be eliminated in silly listening tests: temperature, humidity, air pressure, air flow, state of relaxation, blood pressure, another person in the room, opening or closing a door or window, and on and on and on. These differences are not imagined or owed to psychological factors, they actually do change our perception of sound. Listen to your cables... hook up the new ones... come back and sit 1 inch off from your original listening position and guess what happens.... You are hearing a difference... but it's got nothing to do with your cables. Conclusion... In more than 40 years of service testing various cables I've yet to find a single cable -- out of literally thousands -- that has failed the NULL test. Unless the cable is clearly defective, what goes in is what comes out! In fact, most cables pass the required 20 to 20khz testing by orders of magnitude. For example: I've seen $12.00 RCA cords pass 200khz square waves perfectly. It is almost a certainty that all these silly differences people hear are the result of misattribution of other factors to the cable under examination.
Actually I didn’t propose that at all, referring to your opening salvo.
@@audio_resurgence_reviews That's good to hear. Especially when you can get far more bang for your buck by applying your cable money to a better quality device, instead.

Hey! I know those amplifiers!!! 😮

YG Acoustics makes some of the best drivers.
There is so much out there in that range. Consumer demands it all. Looks, full range, top technology, respectable foot print. Damn, sounds like a woman.
I was in the room several times. The fact a Quad could play that loud- as the flamboyant room host- demo’d was amazing. When I asked for a track to be streamed, it was the best I heard at the show. The vinyl was ever better. Given these speakers are only $12k and the best Quad I have ever heard I am surprised at your disappointment
These are $35k and you need the Baach- the far superior Quad 2912 is $12k and was far more musical
I thought the price was too high also, but that applied to 75% of what I saw and heard at the show. I don't think it's accurate to say that "you need the Bacch". I had the vendor turn off the DSP function and it wasn't something that was critical to performance. I could imagine replacing the Bacch processor with a conventional preamp and being quite happy with the sound. But I would need to spend more time with the speakers to be sure....
As the owner of the room and as a fellow Brit I am shocked you thought they were playing to loud- everyone knows Quads don’t play loud! You must of missed when we demoed them playing FULL RANGE at whisper levels to showcase how only Quads do that. Also I am confused how you found Quads hard in the mids? No one in the history of the speaker has leveled that observation I guess you just hear very differently that I do.
I didn't hear them playing at whisper levels. There was quite a bit of chatter in the room the times I was in there so I could appreciate why the volume was up. I'm happy people found the room/system enjoyable, and as the other commenter noted - 'the best at show'. I think if you play back the short video again, you’ll find my comments were measured and not overly critical. When one has lived with a speaker like the ESL57 for a number of years it naturally raises the bar when other speakers by the same brand are critiqued. Also, I did mention that it could have been the electronics that introduced what I can only describe as a bit of a hardness in the midrange. The midrange is obviously the first place you go when listening to a Quad speaker, so if it isn’t quite right then the other measurables, like low bass and the ability to play loud, really don’t matter too much. That’s just my opinion and again, I’m happy that others disagreed.
I have the original Quads. My first pair I imported in 1985 from England to the US. they were restored in 2017 and replaced by the US Monitor version just restored in 2023. They sound way better than what I heard here. I suspect there are Quads made in China which are not worthy of their name.
@@sylviarienzo6955you heard the new Quads in the room at CAF?
And no great dynamics.
that an 845 or 211
From their website: We live and breathe vacuum tubes. The Type 100 was designed for the 308B triode, a legendary Western Electric original, to bring you 125 watts of pure SET sound. Engineering, power, and quality at this level is beyond luxurious-it’s transcendent. Stay tuned for full specifications, pricing, and availability.
Well said!
Quad is not the same old company. Junk made in China. Finally, somebody at one of these shows tells the truth instead of kissing ass like all these other people do that go from room to room and tell everybody how great the sound is when in fact, all they’re doing is lying. I think the reason for that is because they running a TH-cam channel and they’re trying to get free equipment to use and test and maybe resell to make a profit Very similar to what Jay’s audio lab is doing. Notice how he kisses everyone’s ass as he goes from room to room and hope that he will get equipment that he can then play with and resell for a profit. I can’t prove it, but I believe that that’s what he’s doing.
It’s unfortunate but there’s some truth in what you say. It doesn’t apply across the board but there are some who abuse their position as industry influencers.
You are correct the model was the WR2. Thank you for visiting the room. This is Mike with UniQue Home Audio the new North American importer for Popori Acoustics.
Thanks Mike. I enjoyed this system a lot and had planned to circle back on the Sunday but ran out of time. It would be great to get more info on the Popori speakers and how the designer gets such convincing bass from a relatively small panel! If you can get any info beyond what's on their website, I'd appreciate it. Just email to audioresurgence@gmail.com and I'll use it in an article on my website. Cheers.

I have modest priced vintage equipment, which I have been modding for years. As I make improvements, even large bookshelf spakers have that 8 feet high sensation. Better signal integrity lets that come through from the recording. Less signal integrity shrinks the image height and depth. However, with bookshelf midrange and tweeter drivers, even though the instruments sound like they are on the ceiling, like an elevated stage; the instruments themselves sound big, but not overblown or unnaturally big. Dynamic limitations and overabundant image size are what you can expect with electrostatics like that.
