Glossop wild camping
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 28 ม.ค. 2020
Hi, welcome to the Glossop wild camping channel! I have always loved the countryside of Derbyshire where I live and have enjoyed many a walk alone and with family or friends over the years. After being inspired by a friend of mine who enjoys wild-camping, plus some added inspiration from other TH-camrs (who are a lot more experienced than I am!) I decided to give it a go. Join me on my journey as I enjoy this amazing new interest and gain experience through trial and error, you will see some of the beauty of this gorgeous part of the country and hopefully enjoy some of my random banter along the way!
Chinley Churn wild camp
It's Friday and time for a cheeky camp after work, due to limited daylight Tim and I head over to Chinley to camp in the disused quarry at the top of Chinley Churn.

Always take earplugs! I like the idea of camping there I like a shorter hike at times. Thanks for this its a great video, liked the train!
Tim has the Gobekli tepe trilithon standing stone type "T" shaped rucksack 😮
Rucksack is ancient , been backpacking all round the world with it. Cannot get rid
Nice video Bri.👍
@@Hengists_Wild_Camps Cheers, Steve 👍
Always fancied walking Kraken edge, more so now you have shown us where that cave is near the quarry, old peculiar is a great choice of drink.
Cheers Darren, yes it's a fascinating place, we only scratched the surface here, looking forward to exploring the area further in future.
What no 🥃 reviews. Looked a good place to try and you both had fun.
Last time i went into that cave it brought me out on platform 9 and 3/4 quarters. Great vid 👍
Ah, so that's where it goes! Thanks for commenting mate 😄
Nice video again Brian 👍 I often look up there on my way driving back from Edale , it looks interesting. Was that one of your original tracks you used too ? Got to watch out for those hormone disrupters lad ...Theres an Agenda at play 🧐............my Left wing fell off 😜
Marvellous video Bri (and thanks to Tim too!). So well presented and filmed. We loved the grotto and the whiskey analysis! You camp in such amazing places. Always an absolute pleasure to watch. Stunning photos too. Hope you enjoyed your compendium of snacks 🤣 Many thanks indeed and all best, J&J
Great camp on Chinley Churn. So much to discover up there. Yea that cave seems to go quite deep into bedrock. Wind was quite hardcore that night , minimal sleep. The camp was an absolute tonic after work. Great to try a different location and atmosphere. Absolute epic as always. Missed the whisky madness, so that be included next trip.
@timstokes8283 It was a great suggestion from you, thanks for that. We have unfinished business, so we need to return for another more thorough explore and another camp, hopefully on one of those spots on the edge that we found.
Great video, never been up there, looks good for an explore. Music 👌👌 as per too.
@@Takingawalkwithmybestfriend Many thanks, yes it is a fascinating area, lots more to see so I'm sure we will be returning. It's great to know that I have at least one viewer that has good taste in music 😀
Nice camp mate. Was up there earlier in the year. Was in that exact bit of the quarry goes back a fair way but very unstable and they blocked a lot of them off now. Half the buildings in the area have slabs from Cracken Edge. Concrete was the cause of their demise.
@thepeakdistrictviking Thanks, yes I was aware that I needed to take care in that cave, I would like to return with some old clothes so I can get a bit further, the rocks further in were covered in slippy clay. There was a little partially blocked cave very near our camping spot, just about big enough to squeeze in, again will explore another time, hopefully.
Nice camp 👍🏻 I had a look at camping spots along cracken edge, there's a few near the "chairs and tables" that someone built from the loose quarried rocks, but there was a lot of dog walkers about.
@trooperwolfie Thanks for your comment mate, yes there were some spots further along the path past the old winch, but some young lads were already camping there. Tim and I always seek maximum isolation!
Great place to pitch Brian. So, how deep is the cave?
@PhilWaud Cheers Phil, from what I could see I'd estimate about 10 meters, but I want to go back with some old clothes so I can investigate further.
Brill vid and tunes. Nice to get the 🥃 review too
I'm amazed you could find any ground level enough to sleep on up there. I tried setting up a tarp shelter to use with my bivi on Bleaklow yesterday (just for practice, not intending to camp that night). All the ground was large clumps of grass with soft damp peat between. The pegs I had were almost useless in the soft surface (I'll get more appropriate ones). No possibility of lying flat at all. As an emergency waterproof shelter it would be fine, but not for sleeping. Perhaps you have some sort of wonder mat to sleep on that levels it out?
You are correct, there are very few decent spots to pitch. The spot I camped in this video was ok but not ideal. There is a place lower down and to the right of this spot that is like a little plateau that has a strip of flat grass big enough for two tents. I document this in my video here: th-cam.com/video/xQG41uy-uag/w-d-xo.html
A nice little video, great little spot too. Looks like it was just the tonic.
@EDCCooperative Thank you, yeah it was pretty much a perfect camping spot, I loved it.
Definitely looked like it @@Glossopwildcamp I’ll have a look see next time I’m round there. You’re not all that far away from me really 😎
Good luck.
if you're going to hang over the edge of the Downfall in the wind and darkness, might be better to do it before the 7.3, not after 😆
@GH02-o_o I hear you, we only had the one can so we were still sober 😀 For once the winds were blowing in the opposite direction than normal, so the section of the Downfall where we were was actually out of the wind.
Do enjoy your videos Bri! We went up that route a few months back after watching another of your videos, didn't really know where we were going, saw 2 guys who asked if we knew where the dog stone was, which we didn't but they found it and shouted us over. Could we find it again? Nah, probably not! Looking forward to your next adventure. 😊
@debbieedwards5107 Cheers Debbie 😊 I have now got the Dog Stone coordinates thanks to another TH-cam, so hope to see it soon.
Great watch mate. You’d have got a like from me if the video had just been the intro music 😂👌👌👌
@Takingawalkwithmybestfriend Ah, you have good taste! I really rate Talktalk, as you probably realise! Thanks very much mate.

That was a fun camp Brian. Downfall always been a epic place. Great times and company. Excellent humor in this video as well 👍👍👍

Good video. I’ve never been in the grotto - thanks for sharing
@kevinstark4294 Thanks Kevin, it's definitely worth a look, right up your street I reckon.
Another very entertaining video Brian, thank you. Ive overcome my tech numbness and found your email address so you should hopefully now have the coordinates of the Dog Stone!
@PhilWaud Thanks Phil, glad you enjoyed it mate. Despite the poor weather it was a really excellent camp. I'll look out for your email, I'm determined to find that pesky Dig Stone!
@@Glossopwildcamp I sent the message this morning, to the email on your TH-cam info.
I like seeing familiar places and you and your mate enjoying being outdoors and easing it.
@jerrybullfrog9529 That's great, thanks so much for the feedback. Wish I could do it for a living!
Hope you feel a lot better! Being in nature will definitely help us feel a little more relaxed. Thank you for sharing this with us and have a wonderful week!
Thank you, yes being out there certainly does the trick for me. Have a great week yourself 😊
So glad to hear that your spirits lifted and the lights came out. Absolutely wonderful vlog, as always Bri. Feel as though we're there with you. You have a fantastic rapport with the camera and such a lovely chatty, good-humoured style. The Kinder Plateau is stunning. The nearest we've been is Bleaklow and Stanage Edge, but we keep meaning to come back. Many thanks & have a wonderful weekend. All the very best, J&J
Thanks very much guys! I'm glad that it comes across so well, I do try! If you ever do come to my neck of the woods please let me know, I'd love to meet up for a coffee 😊
@@Glossopwildcamp absolutely, will do 😊😊😊
Great camp. The white bags are full of heather brash to help rewild peat bogs to prevent flooding etc.
Thanks for that info mate, I'm glad to see the moors being cared for.
Absolute classic Kinder camp.. Just brilliant! have you found Kinder Cavern, near the end of Kinder Low yet?
Thanks Ken, no I haven't, it is on the OS map but no precise location is given. I'll have to walk around the area thoroughly next time as it is a feature I would like to see. Apparently its more of a rock crevice than an actual cavern.
Nice cozy vid, i love all the work u put in dad xx
@mouchieex9939 Ah, thanks sweetie 🤔 xx
Thanks for sharing, looks a great spot and so pleased it was the tonic you needed to lift the soul. Hoping to give your curry recipe a go this weekend 🤞😊
Cheers Debbie, yes this was a particularly good one, I felt so much better afterwards. Hope the curry turns out great for you 😋
Curry verdict! Spot on! 'Bri's curry' is set to become a staple recipe from now on in this household . I added some spinach just cos I love spinach, it was really nice and enough left for another meal 😋. Hope you've had a good week and managed to leave the blues behind on the hills Monday night. Looking forward to your next video 😊
@debbieedwards5107 Brilliant, so glad you enjoyed it, spinach is a great ingredient to add, they call it Saag in Asian terms. Thanks for your comment, Debbie, have a great week ahead.
Great vid, always love seeing Manchester lights. Getting some inspiration to get out onto kinder in the coming weeks.
Thanks very much, the best views of the Manchester lights are the southern edge of Kinder, anywhere between Ashop Head and the Kinder Downfall and camp as close to the edge as you can.
Looks a great spot , these places are the tonic for mind and soul. Looking forward to the next camp 🏕
@timstokes8283 I couldn't agree more, mate. Next camp can't come soon enough, looking forward to discussing it tomorrow night.
Great video. Weird anxiety isn’t it. Comes in various forms and it’s usually over nothing in particular. Glad the camp cleared your head, camp anxiety is definitely a thing. Liked and subscribed, looking forward to catching up with your channel 👍
@Takingawalkwithmybestfriend Thanks very much for the comment and sub 😀 The thing that always confises me is the way anxiety often doesn't have an obvious external cause, you might be having a relatively problem free life and it can still be there. Thankfully I have my faith, plus the camping to keep it under control.
Great video!
Thanks son 😊
Love it up on Cluther rocks Brian, I take a different route up from Hayfield than you do. I know where you are coming from with the anxiety, well done for mastering it. Sometimes it wins, sometimes it doesnt, just recognise it as a signal your body is telling you. Great camp, and well recorded - thank you! I dont think Ive ever seen you finding the dog stone, but could be wrong! Ive the gps coordinates if youd like them, I have it saved in google maps which is useless as a cross country navigation app but superb as a gps locator!
Thank you Phil, yes I would love the google maps link to the dog stone, I really wanted to find it on the last camp in this area with Tim. Regarding anxiety, this is something that I used to suffer with seriously about 15 years ago, nearly killed me, but the Lord brought me out of it thankfully. These days it is not serious at all, I think it's just more a dissatisfaction with the evil that people are capable of and my need to escape it. Wild camping is that escape!
Great watch as always Brian thanks for taking us along with you ✋Modern life takes its toll on us mentally and physically but this last 3 decades we are being bombarded with not just tighter and tighter deadlines and heavier workloads plus ever increasing costs of living that are out of balance with salaries (unless you are in politics) we cannot evade the Electromagnetic smog that cause interference down to a cellular level in our bodies and negative effects our nervous systems. It's those positive and negative ions we receive from being outdoors that do the magic mate and they neutralise any feelings of anxiety. Being out in nature in fast moving winds and even rain or next to fast running water and Oceans, walking through Woodlands, Moorlands and Heaths re centres us (grounding). Humans are on a frequency , we are electromagnetic beings that transmit and receive just the same as a radio antenna so it's important that we are Earthed/grounded. Just like the Helicopters too that get full of static so do we and the guys on the ground have to use an earthing rod thats stuck in the ground and then touch the underslung load otherwise all that energy would give you a nasty shock or worse if it wasn't discharged. I haven't touched the Devils juice for years now and only drink Tea and Coffee in the mornings to De Grogg myself because my quality of sleep is the best its ever been since i was a kid. The older i get the more sensitive i am to caffeine so if i do consume it after midday i notice it. When i was your age i could handle drinking beer, wine and i used to love a Whiskey but these days with what the stuff costs i am glad i chose to call my own time on it and its been the most healthy choice i have made and i am honestly feeling fitter in my 60s than i did in my 50s. I sleep like a baby when i am out on the Hill minus the shitty nappy which no doubt will start again in the next 2 decades 😏I know i sound like a boring old man but i have earned the right 🤣 ATVB
Brilliant comment, so full of insight and truth and I really appreciate it my friend. Big respect to you for calling time on alcohol and knowing your boundaries with caffeine, I rarely drink caffeine but could do with cutting out the alcohol. To say 'but I enjoy it' is no excuse! Interesting what you say about the static and the need for grounding, I am aware of this and like to sit in my garden barefoot on nice days, it definitely promotes a feeling of well being. In addition to the electromagnetic, I feel a strong spiritual 'discharge' when I am outside with my Creator that resets my soul and enables me to come back to society with a renewed ability to negotiate it without going insane!
@@Glossopwildcamp Its great that you notice it Brian because a lot dont and then just fill up and overflow with frustration. The stopping drinking alcohol for me was a number of reasons and one of them was that when you look into not just the alcohol but its container and the lining of that container (PFAs) and how it leaks dangerous hormone disrupting chemicals to the drink then thats concerning enough but then when you look in to the amount of chemicals that go into preserving these drinks thats even worse so its no wonder that hormones are disrupted at an alarming rate and fertility rates are on the decline. To me its avoiding the elephant in the room and a lot of men have got a 'Pot Belly' that are caused from the inflammation of the gut lining that this bombardment of chemicals causes.. I have absolutely no objection for people having a drink and a laugh but it does make me roll my eyes when people just buy drinks for a higher alcohol content because they think they are getting more bang for their buck so to speak. They need to check out what else is going inside their bodies first and foremost because nobody would just pour any old chemical inside a cars fuel tank because that would be considered ludicrous but they are happy to neck a gallon of cell killing chemicals which effects the cells nervous system and then leads to nervous disorders such as anxiety and depression , mood swings and a whole number of male specific problems etc. It all seems so obvious to me, maybe i am just weird 🤔. Germany they have Bavarian brewing laws which prevents them from using chemicals or unnatural ingredients but over here we just pump any chemical or colouring into them to make it taste or look better . The irony of using a water filter in the mountains where you have the opportunity to asborb natures amazing minerals for free and miss out on all that health benefit and then go and drink 8 cans of cheap strong lager baffles my brains but everyone is doing it and then claiming mental health issues ( Beam me up Scotty)....i am bound to bump into you one day out on Kinder or Bleaklow so until then God Bless and happy camping 👍👍👍
It's always good to get out mate. Top video Bri.👍🙂
It certainly is, this one was an absolute tonic Steve.
Heyup. The Sharwoods chiki tikka pot aces the "posh" freeze dried jobs. Great stuff Bri 😊
Hi Fraser, the Sharwoods did the job very well actually, I'll be buying those again. All the best to you and yours mate 👍
Bri, love you brother. Just started watching this so no assumptions or presumptions being made (not that they would ever be) it is a strange time, I know you ride the ups and downs too, I’m here with you my friend. It’s sorted, we’re walking through whatever it is together, maybe watching, supposed to enjoy the ride whatever 🤗
Amen brother! I have experienced what I describe as 'strange days' for as long as I can remember, but they are a lot more frequent now, the bible describes the period before Jesus returns as 'birth pangs' meaning they will become more intense and frequent. I think many of us are really feeling it mate, hopefully not long till redemption. Thanks for your kind words brother, lots of love.
Just started following your channel, fellow Glossop Chap so good see all the routes you are doing.
Ah, welcome fellow Glossopian! Thanks for watching and commenting, please give me a sub if you haven't already 👍
Well, great video Bri. Err, I like how you explained your route. Right, there was some top footage of the surrounding scenery. Umm, I've never tried or even heard of heather honey, I'm intrigued now. As I wasn't saying before, it's great being up Kinder during the week. The lack of other people gives it a different feel and that stake looked good mate, much better than my standard fare of Mugshots & soup. Well, umm, err, right, that certainly was a friendly Sheep. Have you ever tried feeding one a lamb sandwich? It's quite funny as animals don't have feelings, otherwise my experiments on local neighbourhood Cats could be called cruel. Another enjoyable watch Bri, cheers mate.👍🙂
Now that was a rollercoaster of a comment, quite exhilarating actually. I'm wondering if it was powered by McEwans Champion, but can't be sure. Brilliant Steve, thanks for making me laugh 😃 Errrrrrrrmmmmm
Bit risky using that Alan Partridge voice in farming country.
@MikeHarlyn-lh9jo You might be right! 🤣

@@Glossopwildcamp 👍
Ah thanks for taking us with you Bri, perfect night out 😊 btw are you up for sharing your chicken curry recipe?
Big thanks for your comment Debbie, I make a few variations of the curry, which video are you referring to in particular?
Oh no particular video , it always looks really rasty, if you're happy to share recipe. I tend to vary my recipes too.
@@debbieedwards5107 Ok, well, I always start with frying out finely diced onion in either butter or ghee, a pinch of salt to help extract the water and a teaspoon of demerera sugar to help them caramelize. Don't be shy with the butter or ghee, its the oil that carries the flavour, I use at least 5 tablespoons. Add a table spoon of garlic and ginger paste (make it yourself as shop bought has vinegar and additives to preserve it and it tastes bad as a result) and fry it out, but not too much that it burns. add a tin of chopped tomatoes, or use fresh if you have some. Once up to temperature add your spices. I use approx a tablespoon of mild madras curry powder, a teaspoon of cumin, a tsp of garam masala, sometimes half a tsp of tumeric and a pinch of methi leaves (also known as fenugreek leaves). Add chilli powder to taste, I use kashmiri chilli powder and add about half a tsp. Fry these out for a couple of minutes. Add 3-4 diced chicken breasts. Make sure the chicken is up to room temp, as if its still chilled it may become tough and chewy on cooking. Cook on a medium heat, stirring regularly until chicken cooked, at least 15 minutes but longer is great as the flavours infuse more. Add water if the curry is becoming too thick. If you want a more intense tomato taste add a tablespoon of tomato puree and I always add a dash of fresh lemon juice or balsamic vinegar if I want a sweeter flavour. Once cooked season with salt and pepper and add some fresh chopped coriander. Serve with steamed basmati rice. Let me know how you get on!
That sounds delicious and some interesting additions. Thanks for taking the time to explain it. Sadly I'm not going to get chance to make it before tomorrow's camp but it doesn't have to be just for camping does it! Will report back 😋
Great camp vid, even so fade to grey thrown in too
Great looking camp Bri.. loving the singing, especially the camera switch vocal syncing lol.
Cheers Ken, loved this camp, those dusk colours were praise inducing. Glad you enjoyed the wailing, I was in a good mood obviously!
Looks a fantastic night. Blessed with the weather conditions. I was shocked how cold it can go at night, been down to 8c while on the llyn peninsula. Loving the tunes while walkkng. Talking about onion , ive chopped onion and put olive oil in a small bag. More from scratch cooking is way forward. Anyway hopefully join you next camp 🏕
It was a good one mate, the colours at dusk were amazing, the conditions were similar to the first time you and I camped at the downfall so it was great to be able to fly the drone.
