In many Romani communities around the world, young girls often face traditions that force them into early marriage, frequently long before they are ready to take on such responsibilities. The MAMYS (Marry After Marrying Your Studies) project has brought together a group of project partners from Belgium (Brussels), Portugal (BEJA), and Slovenia (NOVO MESTO) to discuss the project’s objectives, which will impact the future of young girls in the Romani community.

These early marriages are often the result of deeply rooted cultural norms and social pressure that prioritize marriage over education. As a result, these girls are deprived of their right to education, limiting their future prospects and autonomy. Their dreams and aspirations are often sacrificed to these traditions. This situation raises crucial questions about girls' rights, gender equality, and the need for cultural change to ensure that every young girl can choose her own path in life.
