A collection of videos about outdoor activities, food, music and other stuff, with Yours Truly as the main protagonist. The commentary is mostly tongue-in-cheek.

Wasted Away in Homosassaville (lyrics in description)
My re-write of the Jimmy Buffet classic "Margaritaville," with apologies to the original. Performed by my niece Laena Myers, Cole Berliner, and Yours Truly.
Nibblin' on crab cakes, watchin' the sun bake
All of those scallopers covered with oil
Strummin' my six string, on my front porch swing
Smell those stone crabs beginnin' to boil
Wastin' away again in Homosassa
Searchin' for my lost pinfish trap
Some people claim that there's a tarpon to blame
But I know, it's no fish’s fault
I don't know the reason, they closed grouper season
Nothin' to eat but redfish and trout
Filled up the icebox, but now I’m in detox, and planning a fish fry for when I get out
Wastin' away again in Homosassa
Searchin' for my lost pinfish trap
Some people claim that there's a grouper to blame
But I know, it's no fish’s fault
Blew out my new prop, smacked it on lime rock
Busted my skeg, had to idle back home
But there's booze in the blender, and soon it will render
That frozen concoction that helps me hang on
Wastin' a way again in Homosassa
Searchin' for my lost pinfish trap
Some people claim that there's a cobia to blame
But I know, it's no fish’s fault
Old men in tank tops, tatoos and chain fobs
Sittin’ on Harleys down at The Shed
Used to be the big boss, now they’re dreamin’ ‘bout weight loss
And poppin’ Viagra before goin’ to bed
Wastin' away again in Homosassa
Searchin' for my lost pinfish trap
Some people claim that there's some hormones to blame
But I know, it's nobody’s fault
Some people claim that there's a woman to blame
But I know, it's my own damn fault

Eastbound and Down
มุมมอง 34521 วันที่ผ่านมา
My niece Laena Myers, Cole Berliner, and yours truly got fired up after watching "Smoky and the Bandit" and learned the theme song, "Eastbound and Down." We raised the key from G to C to match Laena's voice. While this is quite possibly the most absurd pretext ever for a movie and a song, we had a lot of fun with it.

Snook at Short Range
มุมมอง 1K7 หลายเดือนก่อน
This 30" snook followed my twitch bait initially and seemed to disappear, but suddenly came up from below to grab the lure a couple rod lengths from the boat. He must have stayed right on the bottom because we were in less than two feet of water. He jumped four or five times.

High Water Run in G3 16 CCJ (Jet Tunnel Hull) - Testing New Steering Wheel in the Chassahowitzka NWR
มุมมอง 1.9K3 ปีที่แล้ว
I shot this video in the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge while testing a new steering wheel I installed on my G3 16 CCJ. The wheel has a “spinner knob” which comes in very handy when maneuvering in narrow, windy creeks. (The stock steering wheel on this boat has a shape that made it impossible to securely mount a spinner knob.) Along the way I took advantage of the high water to check o...
Exploring a Creek at High Water in the Chassahowitzka NWR - G3 16CCJ Yamaha 60/40 Jet

Video straight from the GoPro to TH-cam recorded while running out a remote creek in the Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge in a G3 16 CCJ jet tunnel hull with a Yamaha 60/40. I'm joined by my niece Laena, who was visiting for the week from Los Angeles and enjoyed the natural beauty of the Nature Coast. This is my first time running out this particular creek. Bonefish Hide-and-Seek in South Andros
มุมมอง 1053 ปีที่แล้ว
Partly-cloudy conditions make it difficult to sight fish bonefish. You'll spot a fish, only to have clouds move in front of the sun and and reduce visibility into the water. When the fish are moving in and out of mangroves it's even more challenging. My guide Tee was able to track this six-pound bonefish and direct me to place the fly in front of the fish. I managed to steer the fish away from ...
Personal Best Bonefish (June 2021)
มุมมอง 1153 ปีที่แล้ว
At the last stop on the last day of my June 2021 trip to South Andros, Bahamas, I managed to land an approximately seven pound bonefish. You'll hear my guide Tee say "two o'clock" before I cast, then direct the action from the poling platform. This was the final fish of a day on which I managed to catch and release several fish in the four-pound class as well a six-pounder and a few smaller fish.
Dolphins feeding on redfish in the marsh
มุมมอง 3493 ปีที่แล้ว
Oh well ... no more redfish in this spot for the afternoon. This gang of three dolphins spent a few hours in the marsh eating redfish and mullet. In this out-of-focus scene, they skewered a couple of what looked like two-foot long reds and maybe a big mullet or two and had to wrestle with them a little before swallowing.
Personal Best Topwater Redfish on a Chartreuse Gurgler Fly (March 2021)
มุมมอง 1.2K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Another PB ... this one a 25-inch redfish caught on a chartreuse foam "gurgler" fly in a lagoon tucked away near Chassahowitzka Bay. I thought it was a snook at first because the take was so clean. Usually redfish have an awkward take on a topwater fly and miss once or twice before getting hooked. Their mouth just isn't designed for surface feeding. This fish grabbed it very cleanly. I was fish...
Personal Best Fly-Fed Redfish (31 inches)
มุมมอง 2153 ปีที่แล้ว
A few minutes after helping out a couple guys on a jet ski who were lost in the backcountry, good karma kicked in and I managed to catch my personal best fly-fed redfish (as of March 2021) at 31 inches. He was working a submerged oyster bar and took a Puglisi Mullet imitation. It took him about a half a minute to figure out he was hooked, which I’ve found often happens with larger fish hooked o...
Running a Winter Low-Tide Creek in Chassahowitzka, Florida (G3 16CCJ Jet Tunnel Hull)
มุมมอง 6K3 ปีที่แล้ว
This is video of a jet boat trip through typical winter low-tide conditions around the Chassahowitzka, Florida area. Daytime water levels are generally much lower in the winter due to the proximity of the moon. There is a vast network of tidal creeks and bays with varying water levels depending on tide and other conditions. Oyster bars and limestone formations cross many of the creeks and can b...
Almost Run Over by a Bonefish

Fishing the flats of South Andros, Bahamas, I hooked a good-size bonefish thanks mainly to my guide Chris' ability to see and read the body language of fish. After an initial outbound run, the fish decided to turn around and swim within a couple feed of us.

Nice snook. What did you get him on? Oh, and #Trump2024.
Thanks. He came on a Puglisi Mullet.
Sorry I misspoke in my reply. This fish took a small twitch bait with single in line hooks: Rapala Twichin Mullet I think.
That's a Stud! Nice work.
Snook have been active in there. Last time I was there had 5 on lost 2. The two I lost were in or over the slot.
A reel nice Beasty Boy!!😎👀🎣
Every adult manatee I saw had boat Prop wounds this winter. Be careful 🙏
One of the nice things about a jet-powered boat is there's no prop.
I’ve kayaked here, and love your video of the Chaz. At 7:03, you slow up and point to a boat nearshore on the right. Is that the Possum Trader boat? I’ve wondered about it when kayaking. Do you know the story behind it?
Great video. Area is new to me. I do have FMT. There was a new update. Still learning. Keep watching the video of where you are in relation to the pvc stakes. New blue pvc stakes out there. Just need more time on the water.
Yeah there are a lot of places that FMT tracks don’t take you. However you can see the hard bottom on the satellite imagery and check it out at higher tides.
Mark, What do you recommend for a GPS Chartplotter to navigate the Chassahowitzka River without destroying your lower unit?
It’s more about the information that you overlay onto the chartplotter than the unit itself. You want a mapping data set that shows satellite imagery at low water so you can see structure. Something like Navionics, at minimum (just Google it). Back when I ran a prop motor around Chaz I used to use Google earth to draw tracks that avoided structure, then load those onto my GPS. A few years ago I purchased Florida Marine Tracks and I would strongly recommend that for anyone boating in the Nature Coast area. That will get you out the Chaz River as well as many, many more places. Even if they don’t have a track for a location, the imagery is top notch. The catch is it only runs on Lowrance and Simrad due to other brands blocking access.
@@NatureCoastFisher Thanks for the reply Mark. I do appreciate it.
@@NatureCoastFisher How about the Lowrance Elite FS 9 Fish Finder/Chartplotter Combo at BassPro? Will that work?
@@theLandJackal looks like that one would work. See floridamarinetracks.com/units-accessories/
I live in Hawaii. We have no real rivers where a boat can ply. We do have many fluffy mainlanders with pale-colored skin looking for entertainment and amazement. Although the Islands are beautiful, the mainland has a simple comfortable peaceful ingredient such as your presentation. Thank you for taking the time to share.
How tricky is the area. Just got a tunnel hull with jack plate. Local knowledge of the area will take time. Slow and steady for quite some time.
Awesome area. Moving to Homosassa soon. Grew up in the area. Keep up the great videos.
I'm looking into a G3 16CCJ now, thanks for posting this video. However, it looks like the 17' is the shortest they make now.
Yes, this boat is a 2019 and it’s the last year that they made it. I didn’t want anything bigger personally, certainly not the bigger engine.
Wow, that was awesome!
wish they made a 5hp jet drive for my 13' gheenoe...lol
Awesome video Mark. Such a cool place to be able to boat and live at. Keep up the great videos
I live in Homosassa . Was told by boat dealers NOT to get a jet drive , to many problems with grass , poor performance & not reliable ??? Your thoughts after owning 1 ???
Yep, same thing they said to me when I started shopping for a jet in spring 2020 :-). This is a mantra that’s repeated generally in this area where few people have direct experience with jets. If anyone tells you’re going to get rocks and shells in the intake running around Chaz / Homosassa / Ozello / Yankeetown, it’s an indication that they are just repeating the mantra an have no real experience running a jet around here. I was pretty familiar with jets from fishing in the rocky VA, MD, PA rivers when I decided to try a jet. I’d never operated one but had ridden as a passenger and knew quite a few who had them. The only issues I’ve had are surface weeds which can be an issue especially in spring and again in fall when they die back and develop clumps on the surface. With a little experience you learn to avoid them and to clear them quickly when they get sucked onto the intake grate. I’ll gladly deal with the weeds for the ability to run around the backcountry without worrying about a prop drive. I ran a G3 1860 tunnel hull prop drive with jack plate around here for three years and that’s a good option … just not as good for the backcountry as a jet. The ”poor performance” claim is misleading: jets get poor gas mileage relative to prop drives. You’re running I guess about 1/3 less efficiently than a prop boat. So if that’s a problem, a jet might not be for you. I’m on the trolling motor a lot more hours than the main motor. There is a another option called a surface drive or “mud boat” offered around here. I checked them out and decided it wasn’t for me but it’s worth looking into before taking the plunge. Hope this helps.
Chris I've been running a jet in Homosassa for 5 yrs now best boat I've ever had. I only fish inshore though definitely not made for long distance runs in chop.
Nice run, the chazz has claimed many lower units!
Seen a plenty towed in dragging their goodies lol
I’m looking at getting this same boat. How has it handled to saltwater?
About 80 trips so far and no issues with salt. Typical trip for me starts and ends in fresh and runs through brackish and salt. Hose it down after the trip, especially the trailer.
Retired Marine and live about 5 minutes from the Chaz. Have a 20ft skiff with powerpole, jackplate and FMT’s chip. Want to fish with someone that knows the River. Love watching y’all’s videos!
Can't beat a PB Red when you're flippin' flies on the salt in the Chazz!!
Hey bud do run Florida marine tracks on your Lowrance ? Thanks George
Yes and I highly recommend it, especially for prop boats. In this boat I spend most of my time in these little creeks, but for getting from point A to point B in my bay boat, FMT is great. I swap the same Lowrance unit between the two boats. The satellite imagery is great for locating structure for fishing as well as navigation.
@@NatureCoastFisher Cool thank you
I've had knobs for years....It makes turning on a dime a lot easier.....Hey if you're in the Jungle on fat water where're they biting.....LOL!!
At the moment, Wes, I wish I knew. Water in the marsh and jungle is quite tannic and I’m not seeing redfish at all. Dragged spinnerbaits, chatterbaits and spoons around for an hour in an attempt to get their attention. They’re probably off some point on the outside 🤷♂️
I know jet Outboards are not very popular in this area how is that outboard working out for you
For what I do with this boat, the jet has worked out well. I drove a G3 1860 tunnel hull with a Yamaha 70 prop for four years around the area and got pretty good with it, but you could never really relax. With the jet, you don't have to worry about the random, out-of-place chunk of rock or oysters. The main nemesis is surface weeds. As long as you can avoid surface weeds or large floating clumps of dead grass, it's smooth sailing. Worst case, I have an 80-lb thrust trolling motor on the bow (Minn Kota Riptide Ulterra) that will pull you through a lot of weeds. Gravel, shells and other bottom debris are not an issue. None of the dealers around the Nature Coast wanted to order me a jet. I ended up finding the model I wanted in Pennsytucky (where they use these boats in the rocky rivers) and having it transported here in spring 2020. The boat itself handles beyond expectations. It holds so well in corners that you're likely to feel oversteer before the boat slides out of the corner. If you catch the oversteer a little too hard you'll do a 180. It's a useful maneuver to practice.
Nothing like a big water run around the Refuge exploring the hundreds of back country creeks.....It never gets old seeing what very few people in Citrus and Hernando Counties will ever have the opportunity to sea much less navigate this beautiful area on the Gulf Coast!!
I can ask at what engine speed you reach 25 mph and how much fuel you burn, for me even 20 mph is enough, I need to calculate the fuel consumption for long distances.
The engine model is Yamaha F60 T JR. I have never calculated fuel usage for the boat so I don’t want to estimate and give you bad information. Both the boat and engine were manufactured by Yamaha so I would consult them. In general, jet propulsion is less fuel-efficient than propeller-driven boats.
Awesome! Reminds me of running the St Johns River over here in my neck of the woods except we don't have oyster bars unless I go into the northern end of the Mosquito lagoon. This part of Florida is why I live here...
U got hell house waters tho sacred waters
It’s pretty funny to look at the Navionics charts for that area, especially Gator Creek. They couldn’t have been any more wrong.
Whats the top speed?
25 MPH with just me in it.
Definitely one of the Beasty Boyz....Nothing like a PB Ghost!!
I just got a seadoo fishpro jetski. Do you think I'd be able to take it carefully through these creeks?
Technically yes, however even in a jet drive craft you need to know the location of oyster bars, which can be only a n inch or two below the surface. GPS device with satellite imagery is critical unless you have local knowledge and experience.
Haven't been to Sam's in over 2 years down the Little River....I should really get back into traveling all these places I use to frequent!!
I enjoyed this trip in the direction of the compound....There is a lot of territory I still don't know when running from the Refuge marker!!
There goes the neighborhood....When Flippers gang up fish start flying everywhere!!
🤣
That's just the kind of boat and ride I'd expect in the Skinny wandering around the back country in the Refuge!!
One of the rare times I've seen anyone drop a fly on a Spot Tail in the Chazz....Reel nice catch!!
Thanks Wes. I really enjoy your videos of outings in the Chaz.
Nice take.
Sweet!
Beautiful trip and day with you Mark. I desperately wanna get back down there eventually.
