2002 Ford Explorer - Column Shifter Lever Repair Part 2
This is the second part of the "How to" video I put up for this specific issue. About 2 hour job and part was about $60. I checked out RANS87IROCZ TH-cam page for his tutorial on this and it really helped. Sorry for the camera angle at the end of the video! Hope this video helps!

2002 Ford Explorer - Column Shifter Lever Bracket Repair Part 1
มุมมอง 46K7 ปีที่แล้ว
Decided to make this video because I noticed that this is a common problem with older Fords and there aren't many "How to" videos out there for this specific issues. This is part 1 of 2..... Please excuse the stumbling of words in this video because it was done prior to me having coffee..... Please leave your comments or questions down below!!
2:04 ball and socket, is that the original name? I'm having trouble finding it under parts for order.
Mine did the samething
I was struggling until I popped off the item you point at 1:50 and then also took out the 5.5mm screw holding the white plastic thing that is behind it.
Ran87IROCZ installs the part has to be installed from the (steering wheel side) without the top bushing. You can see him wiggle it side to side which you cant do with bushing installed. After you spent time trying to finagle it remove Airbag, Steering wheel and turn signal switch. Then clockspring which is easy to move 2 phillips screws. If you can do it with the steering wheel on Id sure like to see the video of you putting in the piece with bushing in place. 🤔🤠
Mine broke last night and I'm dreading the repair bill 😢.... I don't think I'm a mechanically inclined enough to fix it myself, the last few months I've been living paycheck-to-paycheck so I'm really not sure how much something like this will cost to repair
Every video I've seen is based on if the whole piece that hooks up to the shifter is broken off and you can just slide the whole thing down and out...in my case only one side of the piece that hooks up to the shifter is broken (the piece that the little pin goes through to hold the shifter in place) and the rest is still not broken off so I can't just slide it down and out. Somehow I have to get the piece that you guys have been hammering off in a socket (back in your garage or on the sidewalk) off while it's still in place on the column in order to pull it up and out. If anyone could please give me some suggestions on how to do that I'd really appreciate it! I have to have it fixed by tomorrow so my wife can go to work. Thanks!

Thank GOD I found this video... my shifter just broke in the same spot on my 02 Ford explorer... and now I'm about to try to fix this mf from the passenger side becsuse the bees started nesting in my driver's side mirror... wish me luck 😒🙄
-_- hmm guess this is normal then. Smgdh.
You just saved my day. This thing broke on my Mercury Mountaineer around the same year. I thought "Thats it, it's scrap, I'm not spending hundreds at the dealer to fix this!" Friends that work on cars are telling me the same thing. Then I stumble upon your video. Find the part and order it. I'll tell you how the repair goes but I wanted to say thank you!
These guys are dicks you have to replace the entire steering column
Can you please give the link of the other video you mentioned?
I have the same problem.....i have and 2002 mercury mountaineer....4.6.liter.....8 cylender.....i got that part ordering now....i just trying find out some easy info......
What’s the name of the part and where did you order from
Hey Joe great to see your video . I was stuck for 2 hours today luckily in a safe place . My gear change lever snapped ( broke ) off after 300,000 mi on my explorer pain in the ass .On eBay it shows they have got just that one part that you have in your hand at the beginning of your video But other ones show they have got other parts as well Do you suggest that I get the other parts as well just in case . Or Do you only need that one part that you showed? Thanks buddy
you might up my life piano
@joematura great video, super helpful. I replaced it but then my replacement part broke again in the same area. I got a new piece, way easier to install second time around BUT now I’m a little hesitant to try to switch gears because I think maybe my shift cable might not be working. When your initial gear shift lever broke where you just sort of edged out if park? Because I was an I think that’s why I’m getting tension from the shift cable but I’m unsure. Lmk what you, or anyone else here thinks might be the thing. Also scouting elsewhere. Happy weekend!
Yes! When mine broke I was leaving a store and shifting from park to drive and the entire lever snapped at the column shifter. I would suspect something else might be going on with your entire gear mechanism since it broke twice. Perhaps the lever might be bent a tiny bit which could cause some unwanted tension.
Tengo un crown crown victoria del 2000, motor 4.6 y se rompio la parte de adentro de la palanca de los cambios la que va arriba del guia quiero saber como se llama
Sorry for the name of the piece you changed
Great video I had a question I change column shifter lever bracket but the key is stuck what can I do
Fermin Rendon Hi there! I found out that there are metal clips that act as a “Safety” mechanism that keeps the key locked in place with the shift column is not in park. Once the mechanism is de-activated (In Park) the key will be released. Hope this helps
Thank You. This video helped alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mine won’t go into park or 2nd and 1st any idea why
Not sure if you'll respond, but do you know what the brass pieces thats hard to get off is called? I'm trying to get mine off, but the ball part came off and it's really hard to get off.
Hey, do you remember how you end up doing it ?
Where did you get the new piece
Most of the ones I saw were a special order.....But I was lucky enough to find one at either an autozone/O'reilys the next day after it broke! Amazon also has them for around $60. If you look up drive column shift repair it'll come up
you can buy them on ebay. just search for your model, year and call it "gear shifter mechanism" and you should find it.
Walgreen
but how did you get the ball brass off.
LoL solid steel lever on weak cast metal. That engineer needs to be fired!
just had this happen, thanks!
Hope this video helped! When I did this, there weren't many videos on how to fix this specific issue! Just checked and can't believe there's almost 8k views!
@@joematura9800 Definitely did. Saved a good chunk of money and time, took like 20 minutes. Appreciate it bud.
Don't see the piece that let the key come out
Put my name on you aint shit, think there should be a remix, forgot to tell you , u aint shit

Very informative. Great help, great video. Thanks FYI. The other TH-camr name is pronounced Rans-87-IrocZ. 😂Lol!!

thanks for the video, do you by chance know where to get that part that broke. the dealer is trying to charge me 1400 hundred dollars for that exact part. it would be greatly appreciated.
That dealer need to be throw in prison for life.
I had same issue. Dealer told me $2700.. Do u have a part number for the shift lever ball?
@@jasonmiles4392 No, the vehicle ended up in a collision, so insirance totalled it. Good luck finding it. Keep checking sites for info. Maybe call dealer and get the actual part number. Thanks for commenting.
What is the part called ? Is their a model number? Thanks
