Man, not only is Dagoth (also welcome back) absolutely correct in his observations, but when you think about it for more than a second, hell even for just a second the possibilities for any conflict in skyrim would, and could be endless with just a little bit of imagination. Particularly when you account for the fact that these are two state going to war with one another. Now yes the Storm Cloak rebellion only has/had haft of Skyrim by the time of the the Battle for Whiterun, but realistically their would have been a massive stockpiling of of everything imaginable, form equipment, to expertise, and man power. Especially for a first battle where both side would want to set the tempo for the war going forward, why are their no enchanted equipment anywhere on that field? Lesser Soul gems are a dime a dozen, and even if some might cringe at the possibilities of using human (or dark elven) souls, just use criminals, or IDK, a fish or something maybe a deer once it's been hunted. But for real there should have been at least lightly enchanted equipment everywhere, it not like these are rare, or these are random bandits hiding in a cave. As well why are there no specialists? No anti mage tanks who know at least the basic shield spell, can cast at least basic alteration magic to make themselves tougher? Or scouts who become harder to spot if not turn invisible, or at least darken into a shadow for flanking attacks. Basic conjurers to summon imps and stuff, battle clerics who heal/buff, archers with explosive arrows/staffs, and of course champions/captains with higher level gear and 2 handed weapons. You know all the absolute basics that you would expect to find in an professional fighting force in Skyrim. And that is of course to say nothing of all the other many things that could be done using the environment, monsters, and other sub factions of the land. Like causing Drauger invasions, by disturbing, but internally not clearing a particular tomb. Causing a battle between a side and the dwimmer automatons by forcing them to travel near, or into a ruin (maybe they were using it a a convenient highway, or travel system. Paying bandits, or orcs to raid their supply lines (and there should most certainly be supply lines) and patrols. Maybe once you become a faction leader, of they become desperate, your side stars to receive "mysterious" aid form dark forces they made deals with, such as foresworn, hagravens, vampire covens, or werewolf tribes, and more. And of course that is to say nothing of the Thalmore, but nope instead we get Catapults that do nothing, and are there souly for aesthetic purposes, like you even need them once your around level 20, and did even the most basic of exploring. You can very casually solo the "Siege of Whiterun" pretty easily if not playing on expert.

There will never be another game like Morrowind. I can't wait for the next Elder Scrolls to have cities of 3 houses.

They really decided to use siege warfare on a city that they want to capture and not destroy. A city where all of the citizens can just be convinced to live life as usual after the battle and only barely complain, and that's only the ones that side against their new rulers politically. Yet they still chose to use a weapon intent on lobbing inaccurate stone balls at a distance of 50 dagoths and expect it to do something useful. Then the genius stormcloaks decide to run into the city they're laying siege to while still firing the damn things, as if these hastily made wooden rock-flingers can discriminate between friend, foe, and building when the one operating it can't even see what they're aiming at.

It's genious, until you realize Azura in her tricky nature sends thousands of False Nerevarine at you, how do you ever know which one is the right, when they even don't know who is the right one. Then you have the eyesore of that Ruby City (the Prison) covering half the Red Mountain full of paralyze drugged up wanna be Nerevarines, someone's eventually gonna get broken out when Dagoth Endus is napping on duty and that guy Sunder-and-Keenings you to low Oblivion.
