    I have lots of loblollies on my property. I am very new to bonsai. What steps would you recommend as far as getting one out of the ground and into a pot? Certain soil? Time of year to do it? Thanks!

    • @TrainingBonsai
      @TrainingBonsai หลายเดือนก่อน

      I would dig them up in winter about Dec-feb. You want to keep the root ball intact by not removing too much of the soil once you get it out. Digging about a 6in to a foot from the base of the tree. Put it in a regular nursery pot for at least a year. That spring and summer it may not grow much, but the following year it will take off.

      @@TrainingBonsai I understand. I’m 62 and have just been doing Bonsai for almost 2 years. All the ones I’ve started or purchased don’t have big trunks, and longevity isn’t a family trait. I’m hoping to find some resource for a field grown tree that would allow me to have a thick trunk a little quicker than I could develop on my own. I wish I’d have started earlier, but I’ve really enjoyed it so far, and haven’t killed anything yet! Even had luck with cuttings. Thanks for checking anyway. Really good video!

      @@randysmith1723I’ve been into bonsai only 2yrs & have found most of my best trees in the back of nurseries. They’re neglected, overgrown, often damaged, but checkout the trunks & offer a reduced price which is usually accepted. Then have fun turning it into a beautiful tree in a fraction of the time to grow one. Good luck!!

    • @randysmith1723
      @randysmith1723 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LoveBonsai902 Thanks! I’ve gotten 13 Bonsai’s so far: 6 regular stock from local nurseries, 2 seedlings (Dawn Redwood), 2 from actual Bonsai dealers online, 1 ordered nursery stock I’ll turn into bonsai, 1 forest I’m making from cuttings, 1 pre-bonsai. I keep my eyes open for the kind of things you’re suggesting, but mostly just find the types of trees I like, but are really young, or just not thick yet. I saw some videos from guys who sell some field grown Bald Cypress “stumps”, but can’t find them again. May also try collecting from the forest here in the NC mountains, where permitted, if it’s feasible. Thanks for the advice!

  • @ableaquariums5480
    @ableaquariums5480 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    May I ask why all the trees in the forest seem to be in the back half of the planter? Seems off balance or is that following a rule?

    • @TrainingBonsai
      @TrainingBonsai 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      So, from what I understand, you can have about a "hand" size space in the front, and the smaller trees in the back, it will give the forest some depth of view.

    I think you should have left more space around those thick roots you cut to let small roots develop from the cuts. The way you seem to have planted the tree, the cuts are very close to the edges of the box, and the small roots that will develop there will be deformed

    • @TrainingBonsai
      @TrainingBonsai 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      yeah that is going to happen, but with it going in a box for now, those roots are going to get cut back again when he puts it in a proper bonsai pot. This was the first container the tree went in since being dug up. Appreciate the comments.

    I would have used raffia to wrap the roots. It doesn’t cut into the roots and eventually decomposes. Also, I think the tree should have been tipped away from the front when you repotted it. I wouldn’t cut the needles while the tree is still in early development.
