The truth is that we are aging from the moment we are born, that we have no idea when we may grow ill and when we will die. No one is guaranteed even one breath. Death will take all our acquisitions away, including our sense of who we are, of everything we identify as self. Death is not waiting for us at the end of the road, it is walking with us the whole time. We are fascinated by disaster ep...

    “But there can be no grave for Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson...Shall they not always live in Baker Street? Are they not there this moment, as one writes? Outside, the hansoms rattle through the rain, and Moriarty plans his latest devilry. Within, the sea-coal flames upon the hearth and Holmes and Watson take their well-won case...So they still live for all that love them well; in a romantic chamber of the heart, in a nostalgic country of the mind, where it is always 1895.” ― Vincent Starrett, The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes

    This movie stunk. When I saw it in the theaters, my parents assumed that they were so into their insanity that they didn't notice either a train or a car coming up and running them over. There certainly are some odd train-like noises on the soundtrack. I love how people attempt to explain it away...."oh, isn't it wonderful that they are finally together!" and "the heart sees what you cannot see...." blah blah blah. No, the reality is the writer and/or director didn't know what to do with the ending of this, and thought, "wouldn't it be cool that they both go completely insane at the end, and then this bright light comes up from behind and envelopes them, and we can let the audience think what that means. We'll be thought of as so brilliant, and such masters of the metaphor!". And here we go, proving them completely right.

  • @waterbeauty85
    @waterbeauty85 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't know what the light at the end is, but it definitely ISN'T a train. Once they take up position next to that bush, they don't move from that spot, and when they stand up, you can see their feet and the ground around them, and they're clearly not near any train tracks.

I THINK THE FILM WORKS MORE FOR ME TODAY BECAUSE WE DONT KNOW, WERE NOT SUPPOSED TO KNOW. NOW AS I ENTER THE FINAL END OF MY LIFE I REALIZE, LIKE HOLMS, WE RUN OUR LIFE LOOKING FOR CLUES , FOR ANSWERS , FOR REASON, AND SOME OF US ARE LUCKY TO FIND SOMEONE WHO JOINS US FOR THE JOURNEY. BUT I FEAR IN THE END WE SIMPLY PASS INTO OBLIVION LIKE HOLMS AND WATSON.

    Moriarity is Us. The audience -- in the theatre or watching the TV. Their gaze is directly to the camera as it tracks towards them. We are the camera, Moriarity is Us. The brightening light perhaps to show their return to reality -- with its pain, soot and suffering -- they will face together. "I don't know how I lived before you came". The scene is like a wedding (Watson in white dress). "Do you intend to walk with me?"..."I do". "We may have to walk near dangers, close to awful things"..."I know that" "Somewhere in the dark he waits".... "I'm not afraid because your with me".

    It could be a train, could be them committing suicide; it could be Moriarty, their shared vision becoming a reality; it could be his mental/spiritual awakening to being in love....I think the light represents a spiritual awakening for them both, not just being in love but learning to accept that anything is possible and trusting other people, no longer feeling alone.
