Frédéric Chopin: Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23, ‘The Pianist’
Frédéric Chopin, the Romantic era’s quintessential composer for the piano, is known for his unparalleled ability to evoke deep emotion and drama in his works. Among his compositions, the Ballade No. 1 in G Minor, Op. 23, is widely considered one of his finest masterpieces. Both Chopin himself and his contemporary Robert Schumann praised this work as a pinnacle of artistic achievement.
This performance is by Jiayi Chen, a pianist celebrated for her expressive performances and technical brilliance. Her interpretation of the Ballade No. 1 captures the sweeping contrasts and narrative depth that have enthralled audiences for generations.
Composed in 1831 during Chopin’s early years in Paris, this piece marked a bold new direction in piano music. Inspired by the narrative poetry of Adam Mickiewicz, Chopin crafted a musical form that tells an evocative, wordless story. While the Ballade No. 1 does not adhere to a specific programme, its emotional arc - from lyrical introspection to tempestuous outbursts - invites listeners to imagine their own tales.
The piece opens with a solemn and mysterious introduction, followed by a theme of heart-wrenching beauty that evolves into increasingly virtuosic and dramatic passages. The climax, a thrilling cascade of chords and octaves, is one of the most electrifying moments in all of classical piano. This final flourish concludes a journey of passion, struggle, and triumph, leaving a profound impression on the listener.
The Film Connection: ‘The Pianist’
The Ballade No. 1 plays a pivotal role in the acclaimed 2002 film ‘The Pianist’, directed by Roman Polanski. This Oscar-winning drama tells the true story of Władysław Szpilman, a Polish-Jewish pianist who survives the horrors of the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Warsaw. Based on Szpilman’s memoir, the film is a moving portrayal of human resilience, the power of art, and the unbreakable spirit of the human soul.
In one of the most poignant scenes of the film, Szpilman is discovered by a German officer while hiding in the ruins of Warsaw. Instead of turning him in, the officer is moved by Szpilman’s performance of Chopin’s Ballade No.1. The music’s raw emotion and beauty inspire the officer to spare the pianist’s life and even provide him with food and protection. This scene underscores the transformative and universal power of Chopin’s music, illustrating its ability to bridge divides and touch hearts even in the darkest times.
Chopin’s Ballade No. 1 is celebrated not only for its technical challenges but also for its profound emotional depth. It demands the performer balance virtuosity with lyrical expressiveness, navigating its sweeping contrasts and intricate textures with grace and precision. Jiayi Chen’s mastery of these qualities makes her an ideal interpreter of this piece.
Her performance highlights:
Narrative Depth: Chen’s sensitivity brings out the storytelling nature of the Ballade, guiding listeners through its many twists and turns.
Lyrical Beauty: Her delicate touch illuminates the haunting melodies that define the work’s quieter moments.
Dramatic Power: In the climactic passages, Chen’s dynamic control and technical brilliance make the music come alive with passion and intensity.
The Enduring Legacy of Chopin’s Ballade
The Ballade No. 1 in G Minor remains one of the most beloved works in the piano repertoire. Its timeless appeal lies in its ability to speak directly to the listener’s emotions, transcending language and cultural barriers. For both seasoned classical music enthusiasts and newcomers, this piece offers a unique and unforgettable experience.
Jiayi Chen is an accomplished pianist who began studying piano at the age of six in China. Her foundational training took place at the Xinghai Conservatory, where she learned under prominent instructors such as Ying Long and others. In 2018, she secured a scholarship to pursue her under-graduate studies at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in the UK, where she studied under Daniel Browell and Jan Loeffler.
Jiayi has been recognised in various prestigious competitions, including the Charleston International Music Competition, and her performances have earned acclaim for their technical precision and emotional depth. Additionally, she has been involved in high-profile concerts and festivals, showcasing her versatility and commitment to classical music.

The full 4-movement orchestral version of Rapsodie Espagnole is available at youtube/sn-hjDA1Y7Y This also provides the full set of Joaquín Sorella’s ‘Vision of Spain’ series of paintings. However, we recommend that you also watch the two-piano version, which is available at th-cam.com/video/yPpIWlm-zWY/w-d-xo.html
Several other composers developed the ‘Spanish Rhapsody’ concept, including Emmanuel Chabrier’s ‘Rhapsody España’, Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Spanish Rhapsody’, Franz Liszt’s ‘Rhapsodie Espagnole’ and Claude Debussy’s ‘Ibéria’. Please let me know if you would be interested in videos relating to one or more of these other compositions.
We have also made available other sublime Ravel compositions, including the following: Sonatine M 40: th-cam.com/video/2_hdQ_MFGts/w-d-xo.html Gaspard de la Nuit, M. 55, in three parts: I. The genesis of the Rapsodie Espagnole was Ravel’s ‘Pièce en forme de habanera’, a ‘Vocalise etude en forme de habanera’ for bass voice and piano, which Ravel composed in 1907. This has been featured in one of our previous videos, refer: th-cam.com/video/NEK7fycADG8/w-d-xo.html
This Méditation is one of my favourite melodies! I have also made available an arrangement for cello and piano, which can be viewed at: th-cam.com/video/3CUYQcOiIps/w-d-xo.html The Méditation is also very pleasing to listen to in the current arrangement for violin and piano. I am not sure which I like the most … Let me know which version you prefer! Both of the videos present paintings by the French artist Henri Adrien Tanoux. The other (cello with piano) video focuses solely on the most relevant painting entitled ‘Thaïs’, whilst the current video includes shorter views of three of Tanoux’s paintings, i.e., including also the paintings ‘Rêverie’ and ‘The sultan’s favourite’.
This Méditation is one of my favourite melodies! I have already made available an arrangement for violin and piano, which can be viewed at: th-cam.com/video/7N0kK7H8T7E/w-d-xo.html The Méditation is also very pleasing to listen to in the current arrangement for cello and piano. I am not sure which I like the most … Let me know which version you prefer! Both of the videos present paintings by the French artist Henri Adrien Tanoux. The other (violin with piano) version includes two additional paintings by Tanoux (i.e., three in total), whilst the current video focuses on the most relevant painting, entitled ‘Thaïs’.
Great video! I have often wondered what a Scotsman wears under his kilt. This question has been answered by looking at one of the paintings!
Show!❤️😢.
Another superb and glorious Beethoven piano sonata! Also, a wonderful presentation of Willian Turner's seascape paintings. The paintings perfectly illustrate the crashing waves and sinking ships that Beethoven's stormy sonata music suggests ...
Many thanks Matthew - I am very glad that you appreciate our efforts! As you suggest, it is very tempestuous - but also very beautiful music. Probable we shall choose a calmer Beethoven sonata for our next video! Let me know if you have any preferred compositions.

Hermosa interpretación. Muchas gracias a mi padre le encantaba! Hoy de aniversario de su partida me encontré con está grata sorpresa 🎉❤
This musical presentation transcends all languages, cultures and age groups. It's universal in its appeal and deeply moving to those who hear it, not only for the first time, but for the rest of one's life. I can't explain how a genius who lived so long ago could be blessed with such a gift. A gift to us all..........
He is transmitting a feeling, an energy that originally came from within him and now lives with us.
