Biodiversity Net Gain: Trees and Woods with Amanda Newsome and Jim Smith
Amanda Newsome and Jim Smith at the Forestry Commission introduce the background, some reflections on the process of developing the new regulations and some of the key implications for tree care professionals.
After some months of delay, the date for mandatory Biodiversity Net Gain (or BNG) was finally announced in January 2024. The date of 12th February applies to new planning applications for most major developments. BNG will apply to further development types later in the year. Small sites will require a mandatory gain from April, whilst Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) will require mandatory gain from November. A few developments including high-speed rail and very small and householder projects are exempt from BNG regulations.
To deliver a biodiversity gain, nature must be left in a measurably better state than it was before development. Developers and their teams must identify, map and assess the condition of habitats, as a baseline, within the site footprint. They must quantify potential habitat losses and produce plans and design options accordingly. Finally, they must submit a biodiversity gain plan to demonstrate how they will create or enhance habitats to offset any losses. Ideally, habitat creation and enhancement occur on-site, but offsite arrangements are permissible too.

Webinar: Tilia in the limelight with Dr Carrie Brady & Helene Kile
มุมมอง 5985 หลายเดือนก่อน
Tilia is a genus of broad-leaved temperate forest trees consisting of around 23 species, however only three species are native to the UK, including the large-leaved lime (Tilia platyphyllos), the small-leaved lime (Tilia cordata) and their hybrid the common lime (Tilia x europaea). These Tilia species occur naturally across the UK, but due to their poor ability to colonise they are often rare o...
Webinar: Why do we lose so many trees (With Russell Miller and James Chambers)
มุมมอง 3.5K5 หลายเดือนก่อน
Is decay detection in trees being discredited by poorly executed tests and poorly interpreted results? Why do so many urban trees get felled unnecessarily? This webinar will look at how bad law, poor risk management and weak arboriculture cause premature tree loss; identifying where the law and arboriculture must improve if they are to maintain public confidence through the biodiversity and cli...

What do roots look like? Is it possible to find out in the field which tree species a root belongs to? The appearance of tree roots has barely been studied, but by increasing our knowledge and understanding, we can ensure that more trees are preserved. This book gives a unique insight into what the roots of different trees look like, exploring a hitherto little-described underground world. Root...

Webinar: Tree Decay a few questions still worth asking with Dr David Lonsdale

In 1982, David Lonsdale took on the job of leading a research project on decay in amenity trees. At the time, tree work practices were changing in response to research findings in the USA, where Alex Shigo and co-workers had developed the concept of “compartmentalisation of decay in trees” (CODIT). They had also demonstrated failures of wound paints to prevent decay. The resulting changes in tr...

I would also love to know more about the introduction of woodchip into a cavity following fire damage, what does this do for the tree, what type of woodchip to use, what problems may arise etc.

Don't need a circle or plastic wrap. Just gardeners who are not lazy idiots. Charge them for a new tree and the cost of the time for plating / removal of the old one. small hand shears are used to cut edges and around trees. Strimmer's are for stupid lazy people. I have never seen one person ever use a strimmer without killing the grass or other plants.

This quite literally identifies the disconnected nature between the AA that focuses mostly on tree science and pays lip service to the contractors carrying out the work. Contractors are purely a solution to a problem. We don't choose the problems.

'Greenwashing' from unreliable tax-payer subsidised windmills and solar panels that in time are supposed to supply our energy needs, but don't, can't and won't, to a mad scramble to plant thousands upon thousands of trees hither and thither, whilst well-meaning, is in my opinion akin to stone age religion devoid of fact, logic and reason. Many people freely pick up and run with the 'climate crisis' mantra, but in point of fact this is based only on theory and opinion in the form of dubious and largely discredited computer models. After having looked high and low, it seems to me that there absolutely NO, I repeat NO, empirical scientific evidence whatsoever to support the theory of man-made global warming/heating/boiling/ climate change - none, nada, nought, zero, zilch. As far as I can tell precisely the opposite is true. Principally due to the replenishment of CO2 lost to the oceans over millennia, plant life is thriving, and this increase should be celebrated and not feared as some deadly toxin. But please don't take my word for it folks, look for yourself. If anyone thinks otherwise and can reference empirical scientific evidence to back up their position, I say come on show us the magic. I would really love to see it.

Absolutely spot on Dr Lonsdale, on point as always! Your commentary matches exactly with my own thoughts on the species you mention which is rather validating to say the least. I waited a long time to get access to this webinar, your commentary on the rayner/Boddy article is also spot on, and this article is used to counter any mycologist talking of pathogenesis/parasitism. I am actually questioning the existence of this wall four, seems like a conglomeration of three walls as opposed to a fourth which appears to have no anatomical presence? with regards to the Meripilus, if we cant cultivate the strain on sterilised media i suggest we have a strain of semi obligate biotrophy. Indeed Stamets found 90% of Grifola frondosa strains wouldn't take on media! I believe the darker areas in your grifola infected oak are colonised and necrotic via Fistulina hepatica, ''off the top of my head'' ;)

I started planting in the brambles as well a few years ago in Spain, in the deforested mountains you can find the more moistures places where there are a mix of brambles and rose hip growing, I plant the small tree then under the thorny branches, for protection of the sun, the animals and there is a beginning of some soil building.
