How I recovered from Burnout (I needed help)
This is a video describing the huge impact Practitioner Health and Dr Helen Garr had on keeping me well and in work.
We are under immense pressure in our health service in the UK. Last month, the future of one of the very few support systems was put into jeopardy overnight. Thankfully, through strong leadership demonstrated by a number of doctors, we have managed to secure a further year of Practitioner Health for our NHS healthcare workers.
This is my personal testimony and thanks to the service.

That was a very lengthy video , But I managed to finish it . thanks & congratulations on passing PACES
Hi Dan, this was really helpful thank you. How did you split your time for the history and examination in the long consultation stations?
Really enjoyed your guidance style. Subscribed from IRL
Mate this was so damn useful thank you, your insights were great. Very realistic view of it I think. I’m a new F1 and am very unsure what I want to do so thanks for this!
Hey dan great video man, i have a question, is it okay to carry a small piece of paper with questions you want to ask during communication or history written on it? If yes Is it okay to just peep at it when doing the exam?
IDK if I was lucky, but it’s been over 9 months and I don’t crave a drop of alcohol, the key difference was that I didn’t suffer withdrawal after go’ogling and reading Steffon Barkload’s Quit Drinking Forever, not even within the first 30 days after I quit and told no one, did not need AA meetings or meds either.
I got exam in 3 weeks in Milton Keynes and just panicking so much I am now to revise any advice wht should I focus on.?
was your hernia something that you could obviously see?
Hlo i am a nurse in London Can tell me how am I become a doctor here plz
Really helpful and practical

Great feedback. In the 2nd communication scenario, was there a discussion around involving the coroner since the death happened during the procedure? Did the wife request to talk to the Dr who did the procedure and how was that addressed if so? Thanks
@@dridmedicaltutorial331 I explained very lightly that there would likely be a coroner referral and the bereavement team would be in touch, however, think the point of the communication station was to demonstrate breaking bad news rather than testing content. You are entirely right, death like that would be referred to coroner, but think in this acute consultation it's making the family aware of what happened in very simple terms and breaking the bad news. You can always explain we will talk about the next steps, refer you onto bereavement services etc. but for now, do you have anyone you can call or can I get you a cup of tea and give you some time to collect your thoughts etc. so yes, defo touch on those kind of nuances but remember what the primary objective of the station is. I cant quite recall re the treating team. I may have again alluded to it. I think there is less of a I guess structured or formalised approach to this one. I think perhaps if it came up you could say, I'd like you to take some time and I'll come back and answer any questions you have. Any questions I can't answer, I can endeavor to get in touch with the treating consultant and perhaps request they give you a call or arange to meet you. Again most of the station was repeating the messaging in very simple terms as to what had happened and then being very kind and empathetic and thinking about the immediate next steps. Aka, welfare of that person. Anyone you can call, anyone youd like me to inform (sometimes they don't want to or know how to explain it to relatives) anything I can get you and then probably good to explain your going to come.back and check on them. Does that sound reasonable? Thanks for commenting Dan
Thanks alot ❤
Thanks for sharing this honest, vulnerable experience. I can relate hard to this. For me leaving for Australia after F2 saved my medical career. Now I'm taking a year off to travel and currently doing some volunteer medicine in the Philippines. Also, you're eerily similar to me, burnt out junior doc, ex-drinker, into fitness, content creator 😂. New sub, keep it up mate.
Super helpful & congratulations!

I had laporoscopic inguinal repair with mesh 4 weeks ago and it was fine and no pain really. I was also worried about being really ill as last time i had GA was in 2006 and i was throwing up for hours after. I was given a double dose of anti emetic and felt fine and was home around 3 hours after my surgery. A little tightness and aching still but otherwise was all good.
Yeah i got so sick after GA for my appendix a few months ago. Now I gotta do this, scared of the GA fuk
@@wordsofnonwisdom tell the anesthetist you were really sick last time as I did and they told me I'd be getting the "rolls royce" treatment, and I felt fine after! Good luck!
I have to see the surgeon next week and I’m scared!

@@Walruz1000 I’m going to ask the surgeon this week how he plan on doing it. It’s the umbilical hernia.
Don't worry sweetie. It's a very common procedure and you will be okay.

Great video! I’m considering a career in medicine but am really unsure due to the current position the NHS is in. Is this a career you would still go into if you could go back to choosing your degree, and would you recommend it to someone who is slightly hesitant? Thanks

A lot of bullying goes on in hospitals to , it can be toxic sometimes and no one cares .. Look after yourself hugs and never lose your compassion 😮
Dan, You are INCREDIBLE! Your raw, deeply emotional honesty is both gut wrenching and clearly illustrates exactly what [on the surface, is you a young, fit and successful 'Doctor' with all in your life before you. Yet, the pressure and the workload you and all Junior Doctors go through does take its toll on you all. One way or another. Like you i too have suffered decades of depression and social anxiety and yes my GP was/is incredible. But i am not a Doctor. Like You and your fellow Junior Doctors, in fact all those in the Health Care profession, you all should be 'cared for' and given support and respect and understanding at all times. Each and every one of you as Health Professional deserve total support and indeed a decent salary! Typical of this disgusting Tory Government to cut vital resources to Health Care personnel. Makes me so angry! Let us all hope Wes Streeting is a person who can turn this around. Fingers crossed. Again Dan, thank you for this deep, personal insight into Healthcare and the toll it takes on you all. You are all incredible. Your channel brings to us the truth and indeed a true insight into the real NHS. Dan from the bottom of my heart, Thank You. You are incredible. Take care always... Take care of You! Thank you.
amazing story, can't believe you have come this far. congratulations man

Loved seeing an unedited video - really cool! So many useful points, especially what you were saying about how we see the final outcome of other people's hard work and not all the early iterations. Thanks Dan!
Good story. Thanks. toronto canada
Hi Dan, I appreciate the time it takes to make such content, its not easy. Can you do a video on burnout in medicine i think its a pressing issue that most of us doctors try to avoid or we use bad coping strategies at times
Dan.. Brilliant! Absolutely fantastic!.The unedited, (un) perfect Dan. Excellent! Yes we are all guilty of trying to be a perfectionist in every thing we do. ( As I have said my OCD is an issue, my place is so (over) tidy and organised. As is so many aspects of my life. And yes we all need help from an Alan from time to time. After all what would we expect if we found ourselves in your care in the hospital? The video was simply brilliant, simply because it was You! Unedited, unfiltered, coughing and all!. A really serious subject that affects so many of us . Put into perspective! Thank you, Dan. Appreciated.
Thanks Keith, Think it was one to question my own perfectionist tendencies. Thanks a lot Keith appreciate your comments as alway and your encouragement! Dan
Very interesting
Glad you think so! hope you found it useful?

Hi Dan, I know I'm a bit late to this, but your talk resonated with me, particularly finding what in life feels "congruent". Thank you for taking the time to research the various psychs too :)
Ah amazing. Really pleased you found it useful. Are you also a medic or do you do something else? It seemed to make sense in my head but glad you also found it useful.
Sorry for the late reply! I'm currently working towrads an allied health degree here in Australia, but I've been thinking about whether I want to it take it one step further and try for medicine. I do like the idea of being a GP, but I've been trying to filter out romanticising it and watching videos like yours and Dr Nicholls to get the real picture. Unfortunately, in Aus, I found it's trickier to shadow and speak with a GP unless you're a relative or family friend @@drdanbeese

Hey there, im a doctor in Malta (europe) respect for the hard work. Its hard to find a career path sometimes. But life can offer various surprises. Even outside of medicine there is opportunity now. Alternative careers like in AI and ML.
thanks mate, appreciate the comment - What is ML?
Hi there. I wanted to ask abt the availability of paces slots in UK. Are there enough number of centres in UK or people have to be waiting for some time to get the seats? IMT trainees are preferred but what if there is some one outside the UK and wanting to attempt the paces in UK? Do such people get slots easily or not ?
I think that you'd be further down the list applying from outside the UK. I'm not an expert on this but I think probably IMT get the first choice, then UK trainees, then everyone else is the feeling I got - not sure if that is the case so do your own research but hope that helps answer your question. What is Sharkemm?
