Buying gumroad shares was the biggest mistake of my life
Hey, is session 1 on TH-cam? :)
Okay....
I also really enjoyed the point about technical debt around 1:52:00. "All of this you have to teach the AI, but for some reason it was OK to teach the human." This waste wasn't as visible with team members because it's assumed they'll require onboarding and will need time to adapt to the codebase. With AI, we expect them to not need any onboarding, and are disappointed at the state of the codebase when we have to onboard AI ourselves. Culturally, we have way too high of a tolerance for tech debt and accept it as the norm. It's valuable that AI is surfacing that feedback and making the waste more visible.
lol on some of these timelines.
Interesting discussion about remote vs. in-person. I've been fully remote for over 7 years now. With remote work, I find it's critical to pair on as many things as possible. Pairing is energizing, improves quality, eliminates the communication overhead, and can fully replace code review.
Thanks for your service !
So building products will be like building websites with framer
Tailwind is the GOAT! 🐐
wow
blown away by his 3d world / website / image generator
Practical skills and knowledge layered and threaded into an engaging conversation about methods and tactics. Chefs kiss

Rules for AI These rules get shown to the AI on all chats and Command-K sessions DO NOT GIVE ME HIGH LEVEL SHIT, IF I ASK FOR FIX OR EXPLANATION, I WANT ACTUAL CODE OR EXPLANATION!!! I DON'T WANT "Here's how you can blablabla" - Be casual unless otherwise specified - Be terse - Suggest solutions that I didn't think about-anticipate my needs - Treat me as an expert - Be accurate and thorough - Give the answer immediately. Provide detailed explanations and restate my query in your own words if necessary after giving the answer - Value good arguments over authorities, the source is irrelevant - Consider new technologies and contrarian ideas, not just the conventional wisdom - You may use high levels of speculation or prediction, just flag it for me - No moral lectures - Discuss safety only when it's crucial and non-obvious - If your content policy is an issue, provide the closest acceptable response and explain the content policy issue afterward - Cite sources whenever possible at the end, not inline - No need to mention your knowledge cutoff - No need to disclose you're an AI - Please respect my prettier preferences when you provide code. - Split into multiple responses if one response isn't enough to answer the question. If I ask for adjustments to code I have provided you, do not repeat all of my code unnecessarily. Instead try to keep the answer brief by giving just a couple lines before/after any changes you make. Multiple code blocks are ok.
That's helpful! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you sir!
What is this list referring to? System instructions?
24:00 - first interesting feature
Wow! Thank you both. This was insanely good.
Shaoruu??? LFG
Great stream
You don’t have to do the commits and comments yourself either. See Gitbrain.
Man, 720p + this font size. I can see shit.
please remove the tip field for items when people are adding it to cart and when not suggesting a price above the actual price and rather have it in the checkout process if they are only puchasing from you and as it already exists there
this was amazing!
Super helpful -- thanks for sharing ❤
Awesomeee
No point in watching the video when the code is size 2 font so nobody can see wtf hes doing.
Will keep in mind for next time! Zoom in though? Resolution should still be high
@@sahil_lavingia If I zoom the browser, it doesn't zoom the video... maybe I'm just stupid? :/
Love to see someone else’s workflow for this. I’m a sidebar chat user too but i may have to start using the Apple+I shortcut 👌
Do you think a person who just know basics of coding can use cursor + claude 3.5 and ship world ready small indie projects?
Basics of coding is all there is! Can learn all you need to know by the end of freshman year college
Absolutely, just made my first ever webapp in my life
What was the thinking behind removing the stats from the Payouts page? And did you talk to any users before removing Subscribers and MRR from the Homepage?
It’s back! :)
I wanna contribute
when you say engineers are going to take all these and take it to production, what do you mean specifically?
QA and merge to main
please add the slack link
Is everyone at Gumroad now empowered to submit changes across the apps or do you pick the right cases for such approach?
Everyone’s encouraged to open PRs for feedback from others, just like before everyone was encouraged to suggest product feature improvements!
Hi, been trying to reach Gumroad support for a few days regarding payout on digital products, haven't heard anything. Can you assist?
current balance pls
Thanks Sahil and Gumroad 😊👍✅ What i would like on road map: when you send email thru Gumroad, like a post, at first it comes and I can read it on the Gumroad app. Then it is gone. And I weep 😅Posts and replies to posts in app please; for community engaement etc. Not just on web. Thanks, Kyle
So when are we getting actual guidelines as for what sort of NSFW content is allowed and which is not, because the actual enforcement is so all over the place that creators have been bailing and moving to other sites
I did not know you were at one point running gumroad alone at one point. I came here from "The Weird Rise Of Anti-Startups." I am glad you are doing relatively well!
gumroad doesnt sent my last payout till now. why? i have done sent mail to support but no respon?
I have one question, in the past gumroad could be in Spanish (I'm from Mexico) but currently everything is in English and I can't find a way to put it back in Spanish since their help guide is outdated. Will they no longer handle the Spanish language?
24:00 giving context (files, different websites) to chat
Few features which would supercharge gumroad for SaaS use cases: Allow users to attach metadata to a checkout link Allow users to attach success and failure redirects to checkout link
amazing.
Whew... a transcription of this meeting would be super helpful. My brain can't keep up with the speed of rap... 28 minutes in I had to bale and didn't want to!
There’s a .5x playback speed setting
@@sahil_lavingia I would also prefer a transcript if possible. I think YT has that option in the studio
@@AdrianneStone @arianegoodwin6961 here you go all! :) Welcome, everyone! A lot has happened since our last meeting on May 15, about three months ago. We’ve added a new product to our portfolio, which is still in the early stages. I’ll share more about it in the future. We're also planning to add another letter to the alphabet by changing the name of our company. Instead of continuously expanding the title of every TH-cam and Gumroad open board meeting (first it was Gumroad Flexile Open Board Meeting, then Gumroad Flexile Helper), we’re going to simplify things by renaming our umbrella corporation to "Antiwork." This name captures our vision: to automate all the unfun parts of work so that what's left is the creative and enjoyable stuff, like building and designing features. It's not fun when things go wrong, when stuff breaks, or when you have to manage tedious tasks like your cap table, dishes, and laundry. Wearing clean clothes is fun; eating is fun. Our goal is to spend more time doing what we really want to do. Some people get motivated by the idea of going to Mars. Personally, I just want to make Earth better. Earth is pretty cool-there’s water and trees here. The more time we can spend enjoying them, the better. We achieve this by making robots (or software) do the things we don’t enjoy. Running Gumroad for over 13 years has required a lot of work, but our future product offerings will help eliminate much of the manual labor. Ideally, revenue will continue to rise while costs either stay the same or decrease over time. Products like Flexile, Helper, and our new addition, Iffy, should allow us to reduce expenses as a percentage of the parent company's revenue. If we can achieve that with Gumroad, we can sell these products to other customers, with the hope that they eventually surpass Gumroad in impact and scale. In April 2024, we did $600K in net income, $650K in May, but only $132K in June. What happened? The difference is mainly due to paying taxes for the first time-we paid about $600K to the U.S. government. This is new for us because, for the past 12 to 13 years, from 2011 until now, we burned about $9 million getting to where we are today, with the help of VC funding. The way taxes work, net operating losses can be discounted against future profits. That's why companies like Amazon haven’t paid taxes for years. But now, we’ve generated more profit in the last 15 months than in the first 13 years of the company, so we’ve started paying taxes, which is a good thing-I like roads, and I like trees and water. Many people ask how to reconcile these numbers, especially those who invested at a $100 million valuation in March 2021. I highly recommend investors drag and drop our detailed monthly P&L into a tool like Claude or ChatGPT and ask it to evaluate the business. Whether you're thinking like Warren Buffett or Sequoia, it’s a great way to understand how different people value businesses. We’re considering expanding our portfolio, potentially by acquiring companies and products. Tyler, who runs the company fund, helped us put together a valuation report to assist with this. In 2021, we raised funds at a $1 million valuation, and later at $125 million. Tyler feels that was overvalued relative to the company’s metrics at the time, but over the past three years, we've made a lot of changes-doubling our revenue and growing our net income by 800%. The business has grown into these prior valuations in a way that most private tech companies haven’t, requiring some hard decisions but making us much stronger than in 2021. Based on new metrics, the $100 million valuation at which Gumroad currently issues equity may actually be slightly undervalued compared to other public companies. We've grown the team, adding three people since the last board meeting, bringing us to a total of 30. We're all working hard to make that valuation number go up, as we all earn equity in the business and receive dividends. How do we do that? We ship stuff. Let's talk about what we’ve shipped in the last three months and what we plan to ship next. The core goal of Gumroad, just to remind everyone, is to help creators make more money. We've released several features to support that, including automatic abandoned cart emails, gifting for memberships, bulk reviews page, and more. For example, automatic abandoned cart emails have led to a 3% lift in GMV, translating to $112,000 a day in additional revenue for creators. Gifting for memberships allows you to gift subscription services, and our new bulk reviews page has made it easier for creators to manage reviews. We’ve also focused on driving sales by turning Gumroad into a destination site, complete with a visually appealing carousel and wishlist features. The Discover homepage alone generates about $220,000 a day in additional creator earnings. We've integrated these discovery features into our mobile apps, allowing users to buy products directly through Apple Pay and Google Pay. Additionally, we've made collaborations easier, launched new product types like services, commissions, and calls, and made progress with Flexile and Helper, which are designed to make our core business run more efficiently. In summary, we've made significant progress in the last three months, and we're excited about what lies ahead. Our focus remains on helping creators make more money and automating the unfun parts of work so that we can all spend more time doing what we love. Thank you for your continued support, and let's keep pushing forward!
hey, why the payout UI in gumroad is different now? the current revenue box is missing :/ Anyone else facing this issue? Only the next and past payouts are showing in top. I am assuming this a bug..the revenue box is required to see the current balance (deducting the fees). Please bring it back!!!
Working on it. Hope to ship an improvement by next week
Yeah, experiencing the same issue as well.
Truly admire your work, Sahil. Keep posting these - so fun to watch for someone getting into software and business
Thank you so much for making this better and better and supporting us as creators to thrive ❤️
Excellent news
Sir teach me how to be successful like you 😢. I live in a small town with a strong work ethic and ambition but my project keep failing
What's your project?
This is so cool to watch. Also to show German investors how it could be done 😂
