This saw was dropped off at the farm as a parts saw with " no compression" only to find it had a bad decomp valve
Got to love the Mac saws. I have a 10-10 , however the clutch / chain brake cover is cracked. I need to find a new one so I can use it. Someone threw it out. One man’s junk is another man’s treasure. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe.
They're out there! Even a non brake cover will fit, obviously you then don't have a brake.
@ i did not know that. I will have a look for, with and without. Thank you
How old is your that kit saw? That cylinder was nasty.
I built it about three years ago and used it a lot.
Thank you for sharing this. What a great explanation/ tutorial. I really appreciate it. Stay safe Dirk
No problem, again thank you for all the comments and questions, I'm glad you enjoy the vids! Much appreciated!
Side cover adjusters are the bees knees. I like you talking about being unsupervised and building forts. Ah yes, the good old days. Thanks for sharing
You bet! Sometimes my mind just goes, probably the ADD... Squirrel!
Hey there, Any chance you could do a video on the advantages of using a ring drive , as well as how to remove the H and L red caps on carb, and what advantages does this provide. I am like a sponge and love to learn new things. Love the honesty to the video, with the little mistakes/ hiccups. In my opinion, mistakes are experiences that teach you a lesson . Stay safe , Dirk
Sure I can do that! I'll put some stuff together for you!
@ that would be great. 👍 Thank you
Yes no experience at all where is the start button
lol! I got you buddy!
Great little saws. My first saw was a MS170. Light and nimble. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe
Yes they are! Thanks Dirk!
I want one. Chain seems to be moving real slow though. I don't think I'd cut it for me
Yeah the older saws cut slower but you could always convert to a ring drive and up the tooth count!
Sometimes you get lucky. Recently picked up a ms291 for $50 that was as just a bunch of filthy parts in a box. When I finally had a look at it weeks later, it was literally a complete saw. The piston was in perfect condition, and after wiping the saw clean, found the date code was from 2020. The only problem was that the flywheel pin had sheared off, thus wasn’t firing correctly. Put her back together with a spare flywheel I had, and bam. Almost a new saw.
That's the best! I love when things happen like that. You just happened to have an old flywheel kickin around and found a home for it! Love it!!! 😎
I got a 290 laying around
Get it running!
What is the stock bar and chain for this? I got one for free and it runs solid but the bar and chain are not right for it at all. 😢
I believe stock would be .325 pitch either 16" or 18" bar.
Looking forward to watching the full video. Keep them coming please 🙏. Dirk
Next will be cutting!
Hey there, Great video. Very informative. I like your honesty about the saw, I am thinking about purchasing one, since they are the fraction of the price . Thanks for sharing
I think they are worth it! I like to build stuff anyway. There is something about all new clean stuff, like building a puzzle! Each time you learn a new trick or something you didn't know before. As far as the quality it's really impressive in terms of replacement parts for an OEM saw, other than hard parts, ie: bearings, crank, cylinder and piston, I have no complaints. Let's say you buy a kit and a few of the OEM components mentioned, I'd say you would have a fairly solid saw for moderate use. But definitely don't sell the kit short in stock form... they do work.
That’s really awesome. I am going to look into this. I like playing around with different mechanical components, as I am a mechanic myself. Thanks for the information. Dirk
I think I said it in a video but, these kits are so clean you could literally build one in your kitchen!
Looks like going farther than you wanted worked in your favor. That thing cuts.
Thanks I can't complain at all!
At 1:16 holy crap that saw has some get up.
I have only built STIHL saws. I think my next project is going to be a 359. I want to build out a Husky and get familiar with them. But full wrap-ability is a must.
Did you happen to see the videos I did on the 359 I ported? I'm really happy with how it turned out!
@ I didn’t but now I am definitely going to check it out.
@illnaturedsaws it was pretty much the first saw I used a timing wheel, I believe I went over all the numbers too. I also piped it and run a 28" bar, it pulls it pretty good
Almost 6 minutes and no mumbling. Barn cat got your tongue? Nice job bro!
Thanks! Getting a little more comfortable!
My Grandpa has 1 of those saw
From everything I'm hearing about them they are pretty good!
Yeah @@sawsonthefarm
+1 for the 180. My go-to saw for around the house and maintaining trails (where I have to carry it for miles). I use my 362 for firewood.
Good deal! I have hiking trails as well, perfect tool for the job! Thanks for checking out my channel!
that pin stripe looks awsome
lol! It kinda grew on me!
Did you do the 5 gear nut thing . Us folks back in the day over filled them one quart .We put a 90 pipe fitting and pointed it up to over fill . I've got a 92 setting in my garage on jack stands that hasn't been on the road since 2008 . Its a 350 club cab custom paint done by a Dodge Dealer in 92 for their dealership TV commercial . Its got 130,000 miles on it and not a scratch in the bed . I put it in truck shows for many years and one first place many times . Its got a lot of add ons on it the dealership put on it . I've hop the motor up a bit and if I turn the pump up it will peg speedo meter back to zero but will smoke like a freight train along with smoke coming off the tires but I keep the pump turn down so it won't smoke . I treated it like a Cadillac and never worked it .
Yes 5 quarts of royal purple with a 25% mix of Lucas. I keep my pump set clean! I don't see the point in smoking everywhere you drive.
What's wrong with yours?
@@sawsonthefarm Nothing I put it on jack stands to keep the wait off the springs . I stop driving because I don't want to put anymore miles on it . I drive a second gen now with a 6 speed . I always say it for retirement money if I ever need to sell it .
Is that a 2-mix engine, or conventional? It's marked on the label on brake handle.
Yes two stroke mix. 40:1
@@sawsonthefarm I mean, is it a new version ms180, with stratified engine? If it is a stratified engine, it says on the break handle label "2-mix", and air intake manifold is oval, not a circle, with two air tunnels going into carburetor - the upper tunnel delivers air and fuel to the cylinder, the lower tunnel delivers only air. That means that the engine is "stratified". Husqvarna calls that "x-torq", Stihl calls this "2-mix".
@ oh, lol! No this is the older version I got it a little over 3 years ago new. Could have been at the dealer awhile.
@@sawsonthefarm I bought mine about 4 years ago and I expected to get a conventional engine. So I prepared an adjustable (L and H adjustable) carburetor in advance, because I was going to port the saw a little. But the saw I got is stratified and the replacement adjustable carburetor does not fit. But the saw runs great anyway. I only opened the muffler a bit.
@homopit42 I didn't even know that was available 4 years ago!
I've had really good luck with the ms170's. You're right these are perfect first chainsaws
I think everyone should own at least 1 chainsaw! Or 100! Whatever... no judgment.
What handle is that!!!
It's for a 357xp, 359, cs2156, cs2159, but they are very hard to find. I just ordered one from a company in the Netherlands called wolfswinkle.
@ thanks for replying!
@@Bags609 no problem
Hey there, That truck is absolutely beautiful. Amazing video. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
Thanks! It's such a nice riding vehicle! It's goin in the barn for the winter! Gotta keep it out of the road spray!
Send it!
Started getting my parts list together!
That’s a first for me. Never seen a 290-310-390 that wasn’t blown up when I tore it apart, and I’ve rebuilt many of them haha
I was surprised myself!
@sawsonthefarm I say fix, and then trade for better non running saw and fix that.... Rinse and repeat till you have something awesome
That could work!
Hey there, Very nice video, first time seeing this brand of saw. I hope you can fix the issue with the carb. Stay safe,
Thank you! She's parked on a shelf for now but I'm sure I'll get back to it someday!
It's SO Clean
Thanks! I've got a few of the older small saws in nice shape. 009's 015's 020's
You can also use a 450/460 rancher oiler worm gear and rim drive drum! The 350's also take a clutch cover from the 550xp, for captive bar nuts, and a better bar adjustment setup.
That's all good info to know for looking up parts! Thanks!
Looks like a mighty shiny black first gen behind you .
That's a sharp eye you have there! It's my 1st year 1st gen 12 valve 1989
@sawsonthefarm 👍
I just finished up a 372 and I ended up with one cylinder bolt that was about half length on reassembly. Went with it, haven’t cut many cord yet but now you’ve got me rethinking my life decisions here haha
These are all the little things that keep me awake at night!
Wait does the 550xp full wrap not fit on 55 ranchers?
No, doesn't look like it would. The 55 and 550 are totally different style bars.
@sawsonthefarm well I'll let you know how I get it too work if it's possibly when mine comes 😅
@@AppalachianLumberjack don't get me wrong you might be able to make it happen with some mods but I don't think it's a bolt on match.

Thanks for watching my videos!
Seen it common on Chinese saws . Order stihl bolts and run it
That's the plan, and clean up the cylinder!
I got a few clones I built . The one thing I've noticed that the coils and carbs are big issues other than that they run fine
@ so far no issue with either of mine, "knock on wood"! Time will tell!
Hey there, How many cc is that saw? Beautiful countryside. Thanks for sharing Stay safe
It's just about 54cc. Thank you!
Looks clean. My husky dealer had access to full wraps on those, I grabbed one a few months ago wired for heat. Hope yours makes the trip. Definitely hack up that muffler before you compare it to your 359.
I hope so too. Yeah I'll put that other muffler on.
Hey there, Great video, Looking forward to seeing it some wood. Thanks for sharing Stay safe Dirk
Thank you! I'm excited to get it there myself. I've heard good things about these saws! Thanks for watching!!!
you should check out the muffler cover I made for my 075av it's stainless steel and has a smiley face😊
That's pretty cool! Nice job!

Get her ported up right and it should whoop on your 359..357xp /2156 are high strung saws with them crank stuffers
I was wondering if it had stuffers, the 357xp does too right?
Hey brother,,, that part number didn't pull up any full wrap handle,,?? I tried searching with spaces,, without spaces, with dash marks,,, no dice!!! Please help, I love my 359, but it really needs the full wrap

Hey, did you see my video on the Full wrap and Wolfswinkle?
Give er a farmer port job. I like what you did with that 359 last year.
That's what I was thinking! Thanks, that 359 is still goin strong!! I was planning on doing a follow up on that saw. I just got a Jonsered cs2156 which they say is the equivalent to a 357xp. Apparently the 359 is less powerful than the 357xp, so I'd like to do a comparison of the two saws cutting.
@@sawsonthefarm Beauty. I did a working man’s port (no machine work) on my 357xpg last year with timing advanced 7 degrees, and I can tell you it outcuts my 365 open loop. Had some issues with the accelerator pump in the walbro carb along the way but I robbed the zama off my 359 and it seemed to fix the problem. Looking forward to seeing you work on the Jred Cheers!
@@stickyricky9612 wow!!! Very Cool! Do you have any videos out of that thing cutting? I'd love to see it run!
No I don’t. I don’t think I’ve ever recorded myself cuttin. I’ll leave that to the TH-cam pros 😉
I hear you, I still have a hard time getting in front of the camera. Although I do have fun with it.
The problem is it's Chinese junk. Stop buying garbage and expecting quality.
Oh I wasn't expecting quality lol. That's not why people purchase them. We buy them because they are cheep. I can say at least for myself that's the allure of these kits. We have an opportunity to assemble something that we know is a crap shoot at a fraction of an OEM saw. Will it be a decent kit? I don't know. But it didn't cost me a whole lot. When I find a weak point it gives me an excuse to maybe change something else. I think expecting these kits to be something that they are not will only bring disappointment. I appreciate the comment though. I'll get it back together and hopefully it will be better than before, that's all I'm looking for!
There has been alot of chinese junk made in the years past. Now however things are comming along way. You can get some non-junk in china. I spent 90 days in china this year, 2024. My clone chainsaws are all dialed in nice and they work on a commercial level.
@metalandwood4u I've often wondered if goods we receive as imports from some countries are like the "seconds" that didn't make their standards 🤔 just saying. Are there different manufactures you are aware of or are purchasing saw components from that differ from the common sources most of us know? My understanding is companies like Farmertec , Holtzforma are just the distributors of components made by other manufacturers. I would add that I don't think all components of these repair kits are bad. Clearly anyone who has purchased and used them for their intended use has had an issue or two. That can also happen with anything we purchase from anywhere. Thank you for your comments, I'm glad to hear some good experiences with is kind of stuff. 👍🏻
@@sawsonthefarm hello. I filmed the farmertec new factory on the channel. They source from like a crank shaft factory or a crank case foundry or a carb factory but many make their own molds for plastic or buy large orders from a plastics company. For example Manny at Farmertec did not want me to film his bags of raw plastic, so i didnt, i only filmed what he wanted filmed. Farmertec if i remember was doing machining of their own aluminum but i didnt see a foundary there. They are improving the quality in that respect. These chainsaws im getting are professional grade use capable. Like my 660s maybe an ignition coil out occassionally but the recoil pull starts now dont fail and same on 381 and 372xp. So its really quite interesting.
@@metalandwood4u that's pretty cool! You've seen behind the curtain! I have a theory on some of these components, plastics for example. If I take and OEM molded part and compare it with an aftermarket side by side. They are virtually identical aside from what looks like a block out plate where a mf's logo would be. I'm talking about identical material and resin stamps. I'm thinking oem's are out sourcing some molded components and maybe have some kind of deal where the supplier is allowed to produced so many "blanks" for their own sales to another buyer? 🧐🤔 After all these are repair kits for damaged or broken saws. Just my thoughts on this and glad the option for replacements is there!!!
Interesting, I've never heard of this happening before.
Me either, I'll do a follow up video with a side by side comparison to some OEM screws under magnification. Maybe just a bad batch for Farmertec.
Man your on a roll , four vids in the last five days must be winter time .
