Julius Sumner Miller was on PBS every afternoon - back when televisions were made of vacuum tubes :) His series is on You Tube and it's a lot of fun to watch the old experiments - that, by the way, have not changed a single bit since.

He could have pointed the iron bar at the compass needle before and after the experiment ruling out the possibility that it was already magnetised prior to the experiment.

I thought it was just the energetic strike that makes the magnet. Does the Earth's magnetism have anything to do with it, or was that just for the kids' entertainment?
The Earth's magnetism *is* a necessary part. The hammer blows simply disrupt the millions of magnetic domains in the metal in a predictable fashion. Aligning the rod with the Earth's magnetic field, (or another stronger magnet, the Earth's field is pretty weak over these length scales but the value in this trick is making a magnet when you don't already have one) is what causes them to shift, on average, into a magnetic alignment with each other (which makes the rod magnetic in turn), rather than just scattering randomly with each hit. I don't know why the small additional tilt is needed.

@@headbanger1428 Yes. Although, you would want it to be a very large magnet, and you'd have to pick a spot relative to that magnet where the field lines across the rod are very straight, or else there would be some losses in the transfer. I think you could also use two, one on each end of the rod, to get around this problem? Again, I'm concerned that I don't understand why the little bit of tilting is necessary, so maybe that would complicate things. It's worth noting that the review papers I've flicked through on the percussive magnetisation seen in this video indicate it is extraordinarily difficult to pull off in general. Whereas the normal modern method of sticking an iron bar into a powerful electromagnetic coil is extremely reproducible.
@ Very kind of you to share your knowledge and explanation once again. I first remember seeing this on the MacGyver TV series lol! I didn't learn this in grade school for some reason. Glad I now know it's called "percussive magnetisation." Very cool! I wonder if the tilt is due to the 26° of Earth's tilt? 🤔

All that knowledge and the good professor can't properly use a common claw hammer...
Sometimes it's better to use the side of the hammer. The rod is probably 3/8ths of an inch, the front of the hammer is an inch, the side provides more surface area to strike that's probably 1.5 to 2 inches in a rectangle. Makes it kind of a like mallet. Sometimes you have to use the side of the hammer, like nailing between joists, or other tight areas. There are many ways to use a claw hammer.

I'm guessing that a static charge might attract through induction. I'm just amazed to find another method outside of electricity to make a magnet.
The compass is magnetic, and the iron bar is, well, made of iron, so no matter if it's magnetized or not, the compass would pull on the iron bar. So to differentiate between a magnet+metal interaction from a magnet+magnet interaction you use repulsion.

The scientific process would have been **RESPECTED** if the iron rod had also been placed near the compass needle _BEFORE_ it was struck with the hammer !
That's exactly what occurred to me. It would have made the demonstration much more powerful.
The non magnetised bar would have been FOULED by placing it against the magnetic compass pointer.
