Scott's Soldiers Episode 67
Today is a look at the OMSS Ottawa 'annual' parking lot sale. Here a number of members and others have an opportunity to sell related items from the comfort of their vehicles and avoid yard work and assorted chores. While the scale is smaller than most venues, it's a chance to see what's out there in the local scene. Thanks to the Nepean Barley Mow for letting us do this and the OMSS Ottawa folks for organizing.

Display cases are not the most interesting subject and the cost to buy them can leave you asking where did all the money go you wanted to spend on toy soldiers!? I'm an advocate for displaying what you have and this episode was kickstarted by a conversation with Andrew Stevenson of Replica Metal Soldiers & Models about the value of cabinets. While I'm not advocating any retail outlet over anoth...

This episode is a return visit to the OMSS's 2024 annual toy soldier show, ON PARADE. The show took place at the Franklin Horner Community Centre in Etobicoke, Ontario. The show is a great place to find deals on toy soldiers, books, vehicles and other related items. I found items to add to my Canadian soldiers collection but if you see some items of interest check out Scott Dummitt as he carrie...

I'm revisiting some local shows where I found toy soldiers available. I'm a firm believer that local shows / events of this nature can be a good source of figures, militaria to compliment your toy soldier collection, book and other resources. So get out and enjoy the fine weather, visit these types of events or antique fairs, you never know what you may find. Links: - 100th Regiment of Foot His...

This episode allows me to show off my rather sparse number of Indian Army figures. Given the history and size of the Indian Army I am a bit surprised that there isn't a greater selection from the larger makers. Regardless, those that have appeared on the market are, I think, well done and diverse. For those who are looking for figures representative of the history of India and these troops, the...

In this episode I am wrestling with the terms 'rare' and 'limited edition'. While limited edition is a term used by manufacturers to market or draw attention to figures and sets, my opinion is that it means nothing if 100 or 1000 is the quantity discussed. With rare, I think I am not qualified to discern what is rare and what is not. In the absence of quantitative data, the term is speculative,...

Let's take a look at personality figures, be they military, historical, fictional or from the silver screen. If you don't have a personality figure, it will only be a matter of time. I believe they can add context, satire or a sense of whimsey. Personality figures can be the basis of some collections - think Santa Claus, Napoleon, Caesar, the British Royal family or be the eye candy to that fir...

Welcome to the first episode of 2024. Today I want to share with you a conversation with noted London toy soldier vendor Andy Morant. In our discussion Andy shares his candid thoughts on the state of the hobby. Andy i...

London Toy Soldier Show December 2nd, 2023. After an absence of several years I made it back and enjoyed every moment. Lots of great figures, a chance to catch up with fellow BMSS members including James Opie. I even managed to pick up a few sets along the way. Yes, my recommendation is to go and see for yourself, particularly if you collect figures from UK makers. It's a casual and fun experie...

Happy Hallowe'en!! This episode is a bit of a lecture. I'm starting to hear and learn more about the challenges, frustrations of what happens to our toy soldiers collection post mortem. Well, I'm going to remind you that what Benjamin Franklin s...

This topic should come as no surprise if you've followed my channel. The Canadian Expeditionary Force was Canada's military contribution to the Western Front in WWI. Both lines offer a wide variety of sets and the Turner ...

Great fun topic! Cool...a simple cleaver idea is to simply add in extra shelves between the existing shelves. You can easily get cut glass shelves and drill in some new holes and set up additional shelving. Almost all of the wood cabinets are made for displaying plates and large Royal Doulton figures so lots of room to add in an extra shelf.

I have about 30 dime store figures. I stopped buying them. All of them are loosely based on WW1 Doughboy American soldiers. They represent a certain era of miniature solders. My true interest is Britains Ldt, Queens Guard figures, found at flea markets or Antique Malls. Usual price for a single Britians figure (in somewhat Ok condition) sells about $10.oo each. These figures are difficult to find, one piece at a time, over some 25 years. What amazes me is the plastic Britains that were very abundantly available in the hobby stores throughout the 1970s, are non existent! Thank you for your Channel!

    • @scottssoldiers2375

In Canada there are a number of individuals and 'dealers' who buy and re-sell. But in Canada, you're best way to signal what you wish to sell is likely through the OMSS Facebook page posting photos. This could get you the widest possible audience without having to do international selling. There are other venues such as auction houses, eBay but you have to be prepared to pay admin fees, handle shipping, etc etc. There are pros & cons to each pathway. Check out my Ep 58 Graveyard Chat, or view some of the OMSS' TH-cam videos for more general info. As to a specific dealer (in Canada) those are for the most part in Ontario / Quebec region and are retailers who you would have to contact directly (they are listed on this site - omss.blog - currently under construction which you can view ). There is obviously a demand for 12in (1/6th) and 54mm but as always it depends on desirability / condition/ price / completeness, etc. Good luck!

I have had at least two of them. They were all "played to pieces". The big thing at 4:25 still lies around somewhere and could shoot if I could reassemble the affutage (?). The plastic shells are mostly lost, we used iron balls that had some impact on the target. The source of the iron balls are best not mentioned. And they are also gone except a few - they tended to fracture.

Thank you for introducing several volumes that I have overlooked. I have a small collection based on the British, Dominion and Indian armies of July 1914. Many are figures from my childhood. Identifying and reading about them has been a delightful sub- hobby giving me many hours of enjoyment. This would have been impossible without the works of Opie and others. In many ways, the hobby allows one to relive the excitement of receiving toy soldiers as presents. That magic feeling which still lingers of opening a large box containing the entire Guard Mounting set by W.M. Britain is still vivid and is refreshed by reference amd research. Once again, thank you.

Good topic Scott...a now long gone Toy Soldier expert once gave me very simple advice on "Rarity". "Anything can be "Rare" he indicated, a pair of your old sneakers are rare but do they have any desirability that then turns into value". Rarity does NOT equal value was the point he wanted to instill in me.
