Thumb forward on grip is good, but this grip (along with the pointer style grip with first finger forward) work the best if the cork grip on the rod has its greatest diameter in front, rather than in the rear. Unfortunately, many rod companies are ignoring ergonomics when designing the cork grip on fly rods, some of them are really awful, and they seem to be getting worse over the last few years. Cork is shorter, skinnier in diameter, and/or lack any significant swelling to support the palm of your hand - the result is a rod that feels heavier than it actually is, and causes hand soreness due to overclutching. Manufacturers are cheaping out even the expensive fly rods, marketing the importance of blank technology and then skimping on grip ergonomics and comfort. Some older, used fly rods are more comfortable.

This makes me sad as we are at the end of the season now :( Great video. Is that a 42nd Atomick fly on your "7 oclock rig"? Whats your preferred leader length behind a spin doctor?
