Wakamarina Track - Wombles on the Wakamarina
I'm convinced I need to do this (as soon as we move to NZ!!!). Thanks for the very cool movie
Awesome video. Was fascinating to see the modern track. A bunch of friends and myself (the "Cluster Club") biked this 35 years ago when they were about to close it for bikes! Amazing to see how much it has changed since then, but just as beautiful as it was then
I haven't been on the flume in over 15 years. It's really pretty up there for sure.
Great Video looking forward to riding it n February when I’m visiting from 🇨🇦
Great vid - really appreciate the detailed coverage of the trail. Looking forward to trying this in Feb'26 for myself
Love the accent saying "Sandy Beach", But it is actually called "Sand Harbor"
Cheers Jon, I only got it wrong about 4 times. Apologies. Was a beautiful spot.
@@getoutside519 It still is a beautiful spot! I'm blessed to live about 45 minutes from it.
We used to travel by motorcycle up the original greengate track from long gully over the saddle and down the route you traveled ending up at the old Greengate hotel ruins Fantastic that people can now see the scenery through there and that the wildling pines have been removed? What you were following down the plateaus was the first route into skippers/Bullendale area I’m 70 now so unlikely I’ll take my Ebike there Thanks for sharing
For as much down you rode I think I must have rode it backwards . Started out from Spooner.
Great video :) just wondering how this compares to the Paparoa in terms of how rough the track is? Thanks ! 😊
@drTeddyJo hey there, I would say overall it maybe smoother than paparoa. The first climb has some bumps but there are some sections on dirt that are amazingly smooth. They would be similar in terms energy expenditure. If you managed the paparoa then the heaphy is absolutely achievable and enjoyable.
3:22 - That laugh 💀
Awsome video! So inspired!
That is a job well done..that is not an easy day.
Looks orsum, I'm ganna visit and do it with a mate, cheers
There is no way I could ride this
I thoroughly enjoyed this! thank you so much for sharing 😊
Dont go off the beaten track without a compass and a map in NZ
No expense spared in signage but the signage is pretty poor in delivery the message. I took a wrong turn and went down the Pike29 memorial trail carpark which left me having to call out the police to get a lift back to Punakaiki.
Luckily this is in my back yard. How far was the ride. Just stunning and you couldn't of had a nicer day. I have an ebike so just wondering what distance it is.
Lucky you living in such a lovely region. From the start of the track its about 14km to where we turned around. Because it's out and back you should be able to Guage your battery life pretty well. I would have liked an ebike on the main climb as it was tough. Thanks for watching and I hope you get a day like we had for your adventure
The ol Louis looks alot different now that the pine trees have been harvested. New gold diggings every 100m or so.
Oh the pines have gone ? That would look different. Luckily the beech trees would be untouched I guess on the upper part. Thanks fir the info.
After 5 years, you deserve a comment! Thanks for posting. I'm planning future rides and appreciating check out the trails from long distance,
Hi thanks for watching. Super happy to hear videos are helping in planning of adventures. That's the reason we do them even if we both dislike being on camera. Happy travels.
Great vid guys. Appreciate the effort you make in the production, especially both of you being mic'd up.
Thanks for this great video - it inspired me to visit Queenstown, and I did this trail last week. Awesome scenery, so glad that I did it, it's a great back-country trail. Highs - well, the scenery, the flow the sense of achievement for finishing a great ride. The lows - well, there's essentially no shade for 95% of it, and those climbs are long in full sun. Take some chain lube, all those water crossings and dusty climbs had my chain dry and crunchy by the time I got to Arrowtown. Oh, and Macetown road is a pretty disappointing trail to end to such an epic ride
Top job , we'll done. Yes i can only imagine how hot and dry it is at this time of year. I may well have edited out some moaning about macetown rd.
I did the trail back in the early 90s. It was a tough climb out of the car park, a partial ride along the trail's contour and then onto Spooner Lake and then another climb before the full on descent. In those days, there were parts of the trail that had various home made repairs where it had fallen away and it was quite tricky to navigate. I remember at one point someone had put an old iron bedframe to cross a gap. It was also the days before disc brakes and so the deep sandy descent from Spooner Lake always required constant braking. When you got to the bottom, you had to prise your fingers off the brakes handles!
Hate to ask but we’re you allow to ride that walkway on a bike?
Cold bluish hue of the horrible Sun Simulator. Can see it's hexagonal shape in the lens flares
sorry about your mental illness
great vid. I'll be riding this in a week!
Cool Video I lived in Queenstown they certainly weren't any trails like that awesome
That ‘hawk’ with the rabbit is actually the NZ falcon - smaller and faster than a hawk
I was going to make the same comment. We have falcons where I live. They are totally awesome.
This is such a great video of a stunning ride. Thanks for sharing! I was doing some research into the track and your footage and commentary have helped a lot. I don't think I'm skilled enough for the Grade 4 section (which I believe starts at around the 5 min mark in your video), so I was planning on doing the Skippers Pack Track or Skippers Road detour. As far as I can tell, that should rejoin the loop trail somewhere near Greengates Hut (12 min). I was wondering if you could confirm whether this is true, and whether there is any signage for the detour? Thanks so much.
Hi, yes I'm sure you can go down skippers road which is also stunning then at the bottom lookout for a turn right and climb back up the pack track a bit to the turn. Unsure if it's marked at the bottom of skippers road as I'm not a local. I would imagine it wouldn't be that hard to find if you can get trailforks map or similar. Hope that helps and you have an amazing ride out there....it is stunning and very rewarding. You'll probably sleep very well after doing it. G
Thanks so much! I'm heading out on this track tomorrow and rewatching your video in preparation. Thanks again for the great footage and commentary. 😊
Wow. This looks epic. Hard but epic
Holy sit it looks scary
Nice video. Thanks
Hi there, would it be okay to use this footage for a new safety video MSC is producing for the Paparoa Track? We filmed in autumn and winter prior to any snowfall but want to show people what it can be like in winter! This looks epic!
Hi Bevan, sure thing as long as we're not portrayed poorly. Our Canadian friends laughed when we called it snow and forecast was thoroughly checked many times before heading out. Regards gary
Is the 'trail' fairly well marked through the bush just before the Borland road end?
Hi Elliot, I can't say I looked behind us sorry when exiting the bush section. Can u get a GPS route to follow as you wouldn't want to wing it around there. Good luck and be safe...it was pretty rugged carrying a bike through there.
Nice video! I have to admit when Americans and particularly Californians build a scenic highway i.e. RT. 1 and here around Lake Tahoe we do it right and well- beauty, scenic views and the thrill of Danger altogether!!
Nice footage. :) Love the gold history stuff.
Great video! It’s on the to do list but always wondered how hard is it in a day…..mid December has the longest daylight hours so can take more time.
An oldie but a goodie - worth a second watch now that we're planning to come back here in Feb/Mar'24
Mountain bikers are losers as they never get to smell the roses.
Holy sheet mate. Those rocky switchbacks are deadly gnarly eh. 😮
Grea stuff
great video, explanation, thanks for sharing. you think adding 10mm to 130mm would be even better?? or may cause problem. i have a scalpel 2013 with 100 mm also , want to upgrade its fork. from 100 to 120 is just adding 0.78 inch, to 130 mm is 1.2 inches. 2023 scalpel has 120 mm lefty, but also has 30 mm handlebar rise. driving position in cockpit is about the same 120mm fork plus 30mm rise vs 130mm fork
This video just popped up in my YT recommendations. That's a scary ride. Has anyone ever fallen off that trail in recent times?
brakes?
Omg epic
Hi Jim I am 76 and rode the A2O last year,, loved every minute of it,,grab an Ebike and do it!!
Great footage. I take it to be a GoPro & did you have it attached to your chest.
Hey there yes you're exactly right, using a gopro10 and a stuntman chest mount. Did use a plug in microphone to cut down wind noise but lost the sound a couple times... like a true amateur.
@@getoutside519 Good one, I just did the same run 6 weeks ago with my new GoPro 9 & as you say, amateur, but at least we are trying ah. are you on messenger as I could send you my small article. Stay safe & keep cycling.
that looks great. thanks for posting all the vids. i have been binging on them. they are really inspiring me to get back into mtb post injury/s and go on a camper van based trip.
You shouldn't have done that. Banana skins take 50 million years to biodegrade 😂.
i was overcome by the desire to drink cold beer at 30:00
Wow, what a trip, and I just did it on the sofa! Thanks for showing these really remote locations, will aim to do in my next life! Stay safe.
