We have a brand new Chinese skid steer with likely the same electrical design as your excavator. The battery is fully charged. When we turn the key, the power drops; the lights go out, and it just will not crank, although it is trying to. Do you recommend any steps to check for troubleshooting?
Could be a lot of things but according to your description it sounds an awful lot like a bad battery or ground to chassis. Batteries can have a full charge and drop to 0 volts as soon as a load is put on. I would recommend load testing the battery to rule that out then with a volt meter check your ground including the main cut off switch as that is on the negative side if the battery a bad internal connection will cause power loss to everything. Then with a volt meter on dc voltage setting check voltage going to starter solenoid when key is turned to start position.
@@86ServiceTube It turned out to be a bad battery. Thanks for the response.
@xoneeleven showed all the signs! Glad you got it figured out!
Where are you located? Could you work on my bike?
@86Service - I’m diagnosing a starting issue with my mini after a few of the wires burned in two from being to close/touching the engine. The wires come from the starter solenoid. I spliced them back together. Now the machine will turn over and over but won’t fire up. Any idea what is wrong? I found two fuses and both of those are intact. Thanks!
If the information you are giving me is accurate… the wires going to the solenoid will not effect engine firing. They simply power the starter motor. You have a spark, fuel, or compression problem. Likely not compression. So focus on spark and fuel. Spark is easy to test simply remove the spark plug leave it plugged in to cap. Ground the plug to the engine casting turn engine over with key or pull rope and watch the plug for a nice consistent spark. (Be careful nothing flammable is on engine and cylinder is not flooded with fuel or it may ignite). If you have good spark move on to fuel. If you do not have spark check the black wire coming from under engine shroud it comes from ignition coil to the key switch. That is your engine kill switch if it is not hooked up or there is a bad connection in keyswitch to that wire engine will KILL and not spark.
I have confirmed it’s not a fuel or compression and definitely a spark issues. I pulled the plug last week and didn’t get a spark. The kill switch is effective as in when I flip it, I get no power to the starter. What all controls the spark? Relay?
FYI- The Handle on one of the shock adjusting tool fits the oil plug perfectly. I use a pair of pliers to turn it.
Love vthis video . Ive learned a lot . when checking for 12 volts on the orange wires at the key switch i only get 5.5 volts . I do get 12 volts on the ref wires at the black box but only 5 volts from one of the orange wires out of the black box to the key switch. This tells me that the black box is bad . Would i be correct on this?
Yep fuel pump just like I thought it was going to be, lot’s people might not realize just because the fuel pump is making a sound don’t mean it’s pumping at full pressure, nice job 👍🏽
Yessir you are correct! However I did waste a ton of time checking injectors and electrical because I did not have a fuel pressure gauge here. But yes you are correct just because you hear it priming doesn’t mean its providing running pressure. Thanks for watching.
@@86ServiceTube I got a new fuel pump coming for my Suzuki Boulevard, the c50t is only a 805 but I love that bike, it’s my around town city bike
I have a 05 Suzuki boulevard c50t it cranks idle and you can ride it but it won’t get over 60 and you have to down shift just go up a hill, so I know it need’s a new fuel pump because it sounds like crap, that very well could be your problem especially if it is fuel injected, great vid so far gives me a little more insight on my Kawasaki Vulcan 1600 which is my main bike 👍🏽👍🏽
Thank you for the kind words sir! Wish I could pump out more videos to help people but I also work full time 12-14 hrs a day so its hard to find time to record and edit. As for your c50 I can tell you are more mechanically inclined than most people. Could be a lot of things but likely is fuel pump or restricted airflow. Hope its that cheap and easy for ya! Most of the time its not the fuel pump on EFI systems. A lot of mechanics will sell one and install just to try to speed up the diagnostics. But I have worked on everything in dealerships for 24 years and I have only replaced 3 fuel pumps on my lifetime.
@ yeah once I replace the fuel pump, valve adjustment might be next if it’s still sputtering, and yeah I’ve found out doing a TH-cam channel is more work than I thought 🤕
How does the circuitry work to stop the engine? What's being grounded to stop spark (to kill the engine... if that's indeed what kills the engine)?? Thanks.
Sorry for the late reply. Good question. I would have to look at the diagram to see how it actually works. But I do know there is a single wire going from your keyswitch to the ignition coil that tells it that it can or cannot fire. The ignition coil on these engines is mounted right beside the flywheel so its picks up the pulse directly off of the flywheel to fire. The coils are bolted directly to the to engine so they are grounded. So in my eyes the single wire would either open or close a switch within the coil by sending voltage or somehow using a ground. Great question I should look into that. Very rare that I do not know the answer.
I found your answer here sir. m.th-cam.com/video/Fv6N2WVtkEw/w-d-xo.html&pp=2AGlAZACAQ%3D%3D
So essentially to test if that was working you could put your meter on continuity beep setting and check between ground and that black wire to coil. In the on position it should not beep. In the off position it should have connection to ground and beep.
Thanks, my mini excavator does similar when i got it, it will only crank with choke pulled but can push choke in immediately and it runs ok at idle and higher RPM with no load, but engine stalls when i start using the hydraulic boom like its not getting fuel or enough, seems under load it struggles, no load it runs at all rpms, but even once warmed up, it wont crank without choke, so I think I need to take carb off and clean it as it isnt getting enough fuel under load
Just an update, carb was clean as could be, I swapped the main jet from a .38 to a .43, I tried all in between and .43 seems to work the best, but the carb on my Rato 420 doesn't have any adjustments, it's a very simple carb, thinking about swapping it with a Honda GX390 carb for more control of the tuning.
At 17:38 you mentioned you’re looking for metal, but don’t you recall they swapped out the original cover plate it probably came from the previous cover plate.
Yep probably so. Good catch.
Thanks a million for the great video! I have a question, I have blown two fuses then it shuts everything down, I believe it has something to do with the light on the bucket, that runs to the switch that you pointed out on your video, my question where could the short possible be? In the light? In the switch? What can I do to solve this problem? Thanks
Any luck finding the issue?
Sorry I just saw this. If you feel that the short is in the light circuit you could check the wires on that circuit for continuity to ground while wiggling them. If the fuse is blowing there is definitely a direct short to ground or a load heavier than the fuse can handle. What model do you have and where is the fuse located?
Great info.
Great video
Where do the vent lines on top of the carb go? Do they connect? Then where do they go?
There is just a hole in the frame that the hose pushes into.
@86ServiceTube ok thank you. Why would the quad sound like it's fireing 3 or so times and then miss a time or 2 and then fire 3 times again? Could my timing be off? I keep watching your videos on the trailboss 330.
Its possible. Could be a lot of things, hard to diagnose on here. Find out if it is a fuel issue first. Take the spark plug out to see if it is black on the firing end or white that will give you a direction to chase.
Great video, wish I found it before I traced half of the wiring myself 2 weeks ago because of a blown fuse. You were testing alternator wires' output to the ground and getting 8.5VAC on each leg. Bet you a quarter they're opposite in phase, centered around ground and will give you leg-to-leg 17VAC.
Lol I try to get it out there but most of the forums block links so just have to let people find it themselves!
My chinese mini ex runs but will suddenly stop running. It will start back up after several attempts and run a bit then suddenly stop running. I thought it ran out of gas but the tank is full. Where do you recommend I start diagnosing?
I would first pull the spark plug out and see if it is white or black on the burning end. That will give you a good indicator if it is getting too little or too much fuel. If too little I would check your fuel flow to carburetor, check the float operation, check the jets and fuel passages, check to make sure choke turn engages fully and disengages fully. Its possible that your choke is partially staying on and cutting too much air after engine has warmed up making it run rich and foul plug.
They also have a low oil shut off, it's possible that it might be slightly low on oil and cutting off spark.
Hi I’m trying to replace my starter but I can’t figure out how to kill the engine
I am not sure that I understand what you mean.
You mentioned a clean carb. That's what happened to me the carb let fuel fill the cylinder when tried.to start.it .it clicked .Just mentioned it because a common problem with these units .thanks for a well explained non starting issue 👍
To drain the oil, Fumoto or Drainzit with 3/8” hose.
Another awesome video!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your attitude! I'm with ya all the way!! Thanks again for taking the time for this repair.
You bet
Awesome video! Thanks for showing us how to fix the carb.
hi i got a question for you. where can i buy the same flywheel ? i need help buying one. can you place a link please. thanks great videos.
The customer picked it up off of ebay used sorry I do not have any more information than that.
@@86ServiceTube thank you brother. Appreciate your response.
I just took this project on as well. Had spark this morning when pulling cord. Lost spark when I hooked up battery. Followed your steps and it worked for me as well so thanks. What did you do for a kill once you unplugged yours? Also any chance you could send me a picture of all the fuel lines. The previous owner had all gas lines removed from tank and fuel pump.
Good deal! Glad to be able to help. I no longer have the machine but I could probably still help you with the fuel lines.
Your 3 videos walked me through and I had the same issue. Followed your video and it worked great for a week and then began leaking again. I think it may be the seal on the interior side because it was paper like material and hardened. I pulled it off today. Do you have any recommendations on which seal to get? I have a vicsec13 and the carburetor was exactly the same. I’d also like to get a second carburetor as a back up, but I am not sure what type this is specifically.. I’m a novice at this and I’m not sure what make and model to purchase. Thanks in advance
Are you able to tell where the fuel seems to be leaking from? And is it a Briggs and Stratton or Rato engine?
No spark on my Chinese excavator. It was running fine, has about 4 hours on it, and it stalled and I’m getting no spark. Please help me diagnose it
Sorry I am just seeing this. No spark can be many things. The ignition coils mount by the flywheels on these and they pick up their own signal from the flywheel. However there is a killswitch function wire from the ignition switch. Need to check that wire out first.
Mine done this and it fouled the plug. Change the plug and it should fire back up. The problem is the choke is not staying all the way open making it run rich to foul the plug. I installed a spring onto my choke that keeps it open at all time so this does not happen again. Hope this helps ya.
Do you know if there is a fuse, we went to start ours and we have nothing, no power, also all the switches for the fan, light and windshield wiper don't work
There is a fuse yes can be found under the floor pan on the front side of the engine. However I would check the main power cut off knob switch. It will be hooked to the ground side of your battery. If it fails to make a connection when in the on position your machine will receive no battery power.
I have blown that fuse because the wires from the cabin on my FF13 came off in transport and when I reconnected them I shorted out positive to ground. Turns out there is only one wire going to the cabin (powers fan, wiper and lights) and that's positive. Negative returns through the bolts that attach the cabin to the frame.
Nicd job
Outside of the gas caramelization would a quality in line filter be another preventative measure to assist? Install as soon you acquire and/or during cleaning. Good content.
I believe there is a filter at the bottom of your fuel tank. But, I believe it is a big screen filter and not very fine. But ofcourse an inline filter would be good to prevent debris into float needle!
Thank you for posting. I bought one new and I revently had issues with the engine. With less than 20 hours on it, it decided to die. Wouldn't run under load and eventually wouldn't run at all.
Thanks for watching! Have you done any investigation as to what happened? Fuel, compression, spark!
A very expensive electrical meter that doesn't work is worth nothing lol I have one also just hate to throw it away because of how much I paid for it
I feel your pain 😂
Do you know how to change out the starter
Yep pretty simple.
Bought my first Mini Excavator.at a auction (wanted something smaller to do slab work on my place then my 580C) It was sold as DOA. had gas in the crank. Pick it up for just $1000 +18% auction fee and tax. And yes there was fuel in the crank. Shot out about 2" when I pulled the oil cap Drain the crankcase. added oil and Marvin Mystery Oil. Pulled the spark plug and crank it for a min every 10 min. or so for about 20 times Drained the mix and added oil. Checked the float on the carb and found a bit of trash in the bowl. Clean the Carb, added oil. and it started right up. I added a fuel cut off valve where it is easy to get to (below the seat outside between the operators legs) Moved my throttle cable over where I have more moment on the throttle leaver from idle to full power (about 2/3 of the controller) Added a small fan with a attic fan switch in the engine room as to cut the fan on and off (on about 115, off about 95). Fan is wired to a relay through the Acc side of the key switch. Add a Hydraulic oil cooler with a thermostat (controlling the fan) mounted in the drain plug of the tank (used a cooled setting T-stat for it is at the bottom of the tank). oil cooler is wired as the cooling fan Remember you only have 9 amps (or 108 watts) of charging to work with at the most.
Thanks for the vid, I have taken one of these on as a project that was mostly disassembled so it was very helpful to see yours.
What size of battery is in it? CCA?
Honestly have not looked at it.
What makes you all believe that Q12, FF12, mine QH13R have Briggs engines? I replaced the engine on my Little Beaver hole digger fitted with crappy B&S engine with HFT sold Predator. No difference among the dozen engines, most original Honda and Robin Subary I am maintaining for my business. It is most likely Honda knock off, and a good one. So you have a sticker and fancy engraved fuel cap, I don't, but I am thankful anyways.
Nice video, the audio could be a lot better but with the closed caption on I could understand. Thank you and I am interested in seeing one on the carb.
Thank you! Yes the audio will be better soon going to upgrade my camera. I have a 3 part video on the carburetor already on my channel. Thanks for watching!
How about a picture of the wiring diagram for the ignition system
I am not sure that one exists.
@@86ServiceTube A wiring diagram does exist, but it sucks if you want to know what wire goes to what pin / connection. Which is what brought me to your video: Do you have a named pinout for the Ignition Key Switch? I had to take mine apart in order to turn off the excavator because the switch would not key turn off. Taking the key switch apart, the OEM switch is really poor quality plastic, and it looks like either the ball bearings wear away the plastic (sticking the key), or the key spring bends the plastic outward, thus sticking the key in place. I want to replace it with an new 5 pin ignition switch of better quality, but I am not sure of what wire goes to which pin, since the OEM unit doesn't have designations on itself, and a different 'brand' ignition switch may be pinned differently. I'm going to look through your videos to see if you have already provided a pinout for the key switch, but if you don't have one, hope it gets warm enough to make one. Thanks. By the way, you can get the manual on their website, 'agrotkindustrial'. It's on the product page for the QH12. The diagrams are on "Section V. Electrical system diagram".
I recently experienced an ignition switch failure.....not waterproof.... i attempted to wire in a generic switch but with no luck. I found a stock replacement online but failed to take a picture of the harness plug wire orientation. Could you possibly show a picture of how the wires insert in the harness plug? Mine has 2 yellows together, 2 yellows w/ white stripe together, a white, a green w/stripe, and a black. Just a picture as its plugged in would work....Thanks in advance and thanks for the helpful videos...
Sorry I just saw this did you get it figured out?
Quick question, if this thing breaks down and I need to get it to my garage can it be winched back on to a trailer? Like will the tracks allow it to roll?
I do not believe so without a hydraulic release valve.
Thank you!I have gas running lnto my oil.so this is very helpf👍
I have a brand new mini excavator and the ignition switch locked up to where I could not turn the key so they sent me a brand new ignition switch which I put in but now it turns over but it will not start so they sent me another ignition switch which was just a nap a universal switch with a hand Ron terrible wiring diagram. It’s still turns over but there is absolutely no spark else works. I wondered if you had any insight on this.
I have the exact same issue, replaced switch but it’s like engine has no spark. If you figure out a remedy it be great to know.
I am sorry I have been away for a while. But I would check the black wire that goes to your ignition coil that is what shuts the engine off by killing spark.
I will by the mini skid steer and will probably just cover most part painted with gravel guard ... no more rust gettin to the metal then ...
thanks for making this. Very helpful. Would like to see video for fan install.
I also would like info on sourcing the fans. Thanks
The machine is very good to use, mainly because of the low price. I got machine and friend in China.
All done cleaning my carb. My linkage was a little different than yours, mine already had the cable going through the hole in the throttle and two separate cable stops before the hole and after the hole. Anyway my machine is running fine now.
Good to hear.
I am going to use that exact oil too. And it is only $12.99
You can buy Shell oil for a lot less and it’s a lot better.
Good job. China sure makes junk lol
Thanks, I will be doing this to mine.
